After five years of plying his trade in the 7DAYS EuroCup – with a one-year hiatus in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague – Petar Popovic of Buducnost VOLI Podgorica picked a perfect night to have his career-best performance. Buducnost's 62-68 win on the floor of Vitrus Segafredo Bologna not only preserved the team's third-place spot in Group B, but gave the Montenegrins a sweep over their hosts that could pay dividends when the final third of the regular season is over.
Popovic counted by threes until Buducnost had the win in Bologna
Popovic finished with a trio of career highs: 23 points, 5 three-pointers made and a performance index rating of 22. He single-handedly drained more shots from the arc than the entire Virtus team, which managed to make just 4 of 26 three-point attempts on its own floor. In fact, Popovic made 4 of his in the second quarter alone! His fifth one broke a 47-47 tie in the last minute of the third quarter, after which Buducnost did not trail again.

Popovic liked threes so much that even when he went to the basket he made sure to get an extra point out of it. Among his 3 two-pointers made on the night, 2 were and-ones. The first came at the end of the first quarter and the other at the beginning of the fourth. Of course, Popovic converted the three-point plays in both cases. It was a given, really, since he is 15-for-15 at the foul line this season.
Having spent the evening counting by threes, the 25-year-old guard could be proud of the fact that his team stayed in third place with an 8-4 record and won't be challenged there soon. Tuesday's win meant a sweep over Virtus (6-4) which fell to fifth behind ratiopharm Ulm (6-4). If Popovic has more triples in him, there might be nowhere to go but up for Buducnost in the final third of the season.
