As part of the new collaboration between Euroleague Basketball and Fundacion Baloncesto Colegial, the draw for the final phase of the schools competition in the Barcelona area was held at Euroleague Basketball headquarters on Wednesday.
Captains and sports representatives for each of the 16 teams from the Barcelona area present in the draw attended the event. The draw decided the pairings for the quarterfinals in the categories for male and female teams and also the bracket for which winners face each other all the way to the finals.
The FBC enjoys the support of Euroleague Basketball in a five-year partnership as part of the EuroLeague Academy brand, under which school tournaments and other grassroots programs are developed. Now in its 12th edition, the Copa Colegial is a competition that aims to increase the importance and presence of basketball among students. It offers young people the unique experience of representing their schools on the court and bonding through basketball with fellow students throughout the country.
In the newest edition, the Copa Colegial – or, collegiate cup – will be played by 200 schools across nine of Spain's biggest cities – Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Zaragoza, Valencia, Vitoria, Malaga, A Coruña and Valladolid – including all five that have teams in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.
“The Copa Colegial is another great example of how inclusion in sports helps people,” said Abigail Martin, Euroleague Basketball’s Director of Corporate Social Responsibility and Development Projects. “The list of benefits that come from participating in sports is endless, from physical fitness to building character and friendships that last a lifetime, so it is all the more important to include the most people at the earliest ages in basketball teams, which is exactly what the Fundacion Baloncesto Colegial is accomplishing with all the schools involved.”
