A dominant two-way performance for the only team to win both of its games so far earned Real Madrid center Vincent Poirier the MVP honor for Game 2 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs. Danilo Andjusic posted career highs of 19 points and 26 PIR to help lead AS Monaco past host Olympiacos Piraeus 72-96 on Friday for another 1-1 series. A dominant two-way performance for the only team to win both of its games so far earned Real Madrid center Vincent Poirier the MVP honor for Game 2 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs.

Deshaun Thomas of FC Bayern Munich was Game 2's top scorer with 25 points. Vasilije Micic of Anadolu Efes Istanbul continues as the season-long scoring ace with 18.0 points on average. Real Madrid center Vincent Poirier's 10 rebounds were the most in Game 2. Georgios Papagiannis of Panathinaikos OPAP Athens is the overall leader at 8.2 per game. Nick Calathes of FC Barcelona had 8 assists in Game 2 and now leads for the season, too, with 6.1 per game. Sasha Vezenkov of Olympiacos Piraeus, Alberto Abalde of Real and Dwayne Bacon of AS Monaco each had 3 steals in Game 2. John Brown of UNICS Kazan averaged 2.8 for the season to lead all players. All-time shot-blocking king Bryant Dunston of Efes added 4 to his total in Game 2, matching the most in any playoff game since the format was launched in 2005. Papagiannis and Walter Tavares of Real share the season lead with 1.7 per game. Poirier's was the only double-double recorded in Game 2.

With AS Monaco only scoring 54 points in Gam 1 loss, Danilo Andjusic was called upon to step up on Friday night and he certainly delivered in a big Game 2 win over Olympiacos Piraeus.

AS Monaco has been forced to do without the services of sharp-shooting Danilo Andjusic for a while, as the veteran Serb headed into the playoffs series with Olympiacos Piraeus having not appeared in any Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games since February due to a leg injury.

Andjusic did return to action in the domestic league on Saturday, showing he was fit again by scoring 17 points, but Monaco head coach Sasa Obradovic was clearly concerned about the risk of rushing back the Serbian guard too soon and left him on the bench throughout Game 1.

With Monaco only scoring 54 points in that loss, however, Andjusic was called upon to step up on Friday night and he certainly delivered by coming off the bench to score a new career-high of 19 points to go with 5 rebounds in 21 minutes on the floor. The first of those points were probably the most important, as his three-pointer sparked a 0-20 run which totally changed the game in Monaco's favor.

Andjusic finished with 19 points on impressively efficient shooting: 2 of 3 two-pointers, 3 of 4 shots from three-point range and all 6 of his free throw attempts went in, all helping his performance index rating of 23 – another personal best.

That excellent performance meant that Andjusic was able to enjoy a double celebration, because Friday was also his 31st birthday. A new career high in a big playoffs win on his return from injury was definitely the icing on the cake.

Real's late-season slump forgotten after 2-0 start vs. Maccabi

After having booked a 10-point win in Game 1 of the playoffs, Real pounded Maccabi with a 29-point victory in record fashion for a 2-0 lead .

Not everyone could have imagined such a dominant Real team in the post-season after the team limped to the finish line.  Real lost eight of its last 10 regular season games to finish fourth as its record fell to 18-10.

"We know that we didn't do a great job the last month, month and a half," said Real veteran Sergio Llull, who scored a team-high 17 points in Game 2 on Friday. 

"But now it's the playoffs. I think the team did an amazing job in both games. And we have to finish the job."

Vincent Poirier was a true force in Game 2, as well, with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks for a performance index rating of 31.

"We have been through hard times, but when you play for Madrid and the playoffs are coming, all the team is focused on that and forget the past," Poirier said. "We are all dedicated to what comes next."

Real amassed a lackluster 7-9 record on the road this season, and it knows that Maccabi will not be an easy team to win in Tel Aviv, where the team went 13-3 this season.

"We know how difficult it will be \[in Tel Aviv\]," head coach Pablo Laso said. "It will take a lot of effort to stop these guys. They are very good players. There will be a great atmosphere there and it will be just as difficult as it was Wednesday and today."

Real nearly set a EuroLeague Playoffs record for points in a first half with 56 in the first 20 minutes and carried that momentum to a second win. No team has ever come back from a 0-2 deficit to win a best-of-five playoff series. Sergio Llull made 5 three-pointers for 17 points to lead the winners. Vincent Poirier picked up 16 points and 10 rebounds. And Guerschon Yabusele scored 16 points for Real, which took the rebounding battle 41-30 and drained 14 triples. No Maccabi player scored in double figures, with Keenan Evans pacing the visitors with 9 points. Maccabi was able to make just 38.5% of its two-point shot attempts.

Real head coach Pablo Laso sent out his same starting five from Game 1: Nigel Williams-Goss, Fabien Causeur, Adam Hanga, Yabusele and Walter Tavares. Maccabi play caller Avi Even made one change, with Jalen Reynolds starting inside instead of Ante Zizic alongside Scottie Wilbekin, Keenan Evans, James Nunnally and Derrick Williams. Real tried to get Tavares going right away, and he obliged with the game's first basket. Wilbekin hit from deep to get Maccabi going before Evans converted a three-point play to make it 2-6. The hosts were hot to start from the outside, with Williams-Goss draining 2 triples and Hanga another. Yabusele soon added a tough basket-and-one to put Real up 16-10. Maccabi countered with a triple from Jalen Reynolds and a four-point play from Evans for a 16-18 lead. Real's offensive fireworks continued with Yabusele scoring after three offensive rebounds on a single possession among 8 straight points for a 24-18 cushion. Sergio Llull then came off the bench and drained a trio of triples for a 35-26 Real advantage after 10 minutes.

Williams downed a three-pointer for Maccabi to start the second quarter, but was matched by Anthony Randolph from deep. Williams worked hard to keep the guests close but Poirier collected 7 points, 3 offensive rebounds, a block and an assist on Rudy Fernandez's three-pointer to make Reals margin soar to 50-33. Reynolds made a free throw that snapped a Maccabi scoring drought of more than 4 minutes, only to see Poirier extend the difference to 20 points, 54-34. Nunnally tried to give Maccabi some positivity heading into the locker room with a three-pointer as the  score was 56-37 at the break.

Real had the perfect start to the second half with the first 6 points – four of them coming from big men Tavares and Yabusele – before Hanga unleashed a hammer dunk for a 62-37 lead. Maccabi needed more than 3 minutes to finally score before 6 straight points and a triple from Wilbekin trimmed the deficit to 64-44. Yabusele collected 7 more points at the other end before Llull's triple on the third-quarter buzzer meant a 74-48 lead after 30 minutes.

Llull opened the fourth quarter with another three-pointer that Angelo Caloiaro matched for Maccabi, which was looking to finish the game on a high note. Khyri Thomas's three-pointer cut the difference to 79-55 but Real scored the next 4 points and the hosts did not slow down in the closing minutes. The last time these two teams, Real swept Maccabi 3-0 in 2015 on the way to its first EuroLeague title in 20 years. Real will look to do the same when the series resumes with Game 3 on Tuesday in Tel Aviv.

Monaco shocked a sellout crowd of 11,500 in Piraeus by turning the series around with a 72-96 dismantling of host Olympiacos on Friday for its first-ever Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs victory. Monaco's 0-20 second-quarter burst, tied for the third-longest shutout run in playoffs history, proved too much for the Reds to overcome. Mike James starred for Monaco with 23 points while Danilo Andjusic added 19 and Dwayne Bacon 17. Sasha Vezenkov led Olympiacos with 14 points. Tied 1-1 now, the series moves to the French Riviera for Game 3 next Wednesday and Game 4 on Friday, where if it defends its home court, Monaco can become the extremely rare competition debutant to reach a Final Four.

Real Madrid moved within a victory of returning to the Final Four when it overwhelmed visiting Maccabi by a resounding 95-66 in Game 2 to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five series. Real can return to the Final Four for the eighth time in 11 years if it wins Game 3 in Tel Aviv next Tuesday. Real's 56-37 halftime lead gave it the second-highest first-half scoring total in the playoffs since 2007-08, and nothing Maccabi could do thereafter was nearly enough. Real dominated so much that its team performance index rating of 126 was the sixth-highest in playoffs history. Game 2 of the 2021-22 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs continued to flip the script as another series was evened up 1-1 in Friday's first game, but the last showdown of the week left one team only a single victory away from the Final Four!

It was a real team effort, with six different players scoring, led by Yakuba Ouattara with a pair of three-pointers for his only shots and all his 6 points of the game.

Monaco's spectacular run wasn't just decisive on Friday night: it also tied the third-best in the playoffs since 2007, matching 20-0 runs by Panathinaikos Athens against Real Madrid in 2018 and by AX Armani Exchange Milan last season against FC Bayern Munich. The only better runs were 22-0, achieved by Real Madrid against Olympiacos in 2009 and Panathinaikos against Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2012.

Vassilis Spanoulis, a trailblazer whose exquisite talent and timing marked an epoch in the international game, will become the newest Euroleague Basketball Legend on Wednesday, when the team he led to new heights last decade, Olympiacos Piraeus, opens the playoffs at home.

Spanoulis, a three-time continental champion, Final Four MVP and EuroLeague All-Decade player whose eight seasons on the All-EuroLeague Team are the most by any player this century, will be honored before a sea of his adoring red-and-white fans when Olympiacos hosts AS Monaco in Game 1 of their best-of-five series at Peace and Friendship Stadium.

Spanoulis becomes the eighth player to receive Euroleague Basketball's highest distinction, after Theo Papaloukas, Juan Carlos Navarro, Ramunas Siskauskas, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Dimitris Diamantidis, Mirsad Turkcan and Felipe Reyes. The late Dusan Ivkovic, one of Spanoulis's coaches at Olympiacos, was honored as a Euroleague Basketball Legend, too.

Among his long list of EuroLeague accomplishments, Spanoulis finished his playing career as the competition's career leader in an astounding six statistical categories at the time he retired last summer: points (4,445), free throws made (1,131), fouls drawn (1,583), performance index rating (4,183), assists (1,607) and field goals made (1,403). He remains the EuroLeague's all-time scoring leader thanks to having averaged 12.4 points over a remarkable span of 15 seasons.

Spanoulis started his career in his hometown club, Larissa, and also played for Maroussi before joining Panathinaikos Athens in 2005. After a brief stint with Houston of the NBA, Spanoulis led Panathinaikos to the EuroLeague title in 2009, earning the Final Four MVP honor for the first time. Spanoulis joined Olympiacos in 2010 and played with the Reds for 11 seasons that established him as one of the great leaders in basketball history.

In his second season with Olympiacos, Spanoulis's last-second assist to long-time teammate Georgios Printezis to complete an 11-minute, 19-point comeback to stun favored CSKA Moscow in the 2012 EuroLeague Championship Game, marking the only major international basketball club title ever won on the season's very last shot. A year later, Spanoulis turned around the 2013 EuroLeague Championship Game as a scorer, downing all of his 22 points after halftime as Olympiacos erased a 17-point deficit against Real Madrid to become just the second repeat EuroLeague champion in two decades. His Final Four MVP accolades in 2012 and 2013 made him just the second player, after Toni Kukoc, to win this award three times.

Spanoulis led Olympiacos to two additional championship games, as well, in 2015 and 2017.

Spanoulis also won seven Greek League and four Greek Cup titles, led Olympiacos to the Intercontinental Cup crown in 2013, and won three medals with the Greek senior national team: gold at EuroBasket 2005, silver at the 2016 World Cup, and bronze at EuroBasket 2009.

Spanoulis is currently serving as head coach of specially selected teams of international youth stars in each qualifying event and the finals of the 2021-22 Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament.

Perhaps even more than for his numbers, Spanoulis will forever be remembered as one of the game's greatest clutch performers ever.

In crunch time of even the most important games – when every opponent and fan knew who the decider would be – Spanoulis almost always delivered. His masterful use of pick-and-rolls to score at the rim or rack up assists was matched only by his fierce marksmanship as a shooter whose side-step three-pointers were imitated across the globe.
