Round 17: Fantasy Challenge recommendations

Dec 30, 2019 by Euroleague.net Print

Round 16 had a lot of interesting results and many great individual performances that allowed EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge users to get high scores: Giorgos Mazis of Greece was this round's winner with 277.9 points. There were as many as four road warriors. Valencia Basket needed overtime to top Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul. Valencia started with a 0-5 record and is 7-4 after that. Billy Baron and Lorenzo Brown helped Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade beat Zenit St Petersburg. Zalgiris Kaunas broke a nine-game losing streak with a brilliant, no-doubt-about-it road victory against FC Bayern Munich. And Real Madrid played near-perfect basketball to defeat Panathinaikos OPAP Athens in the Greek capital. FC Barcelona defeated Olympiacos Piraeus and Anadolu Efes Istanbul thrashed Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv, joining Real in a three-way tie atop the standings. LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne stayed strong at home, defeating Khimki Moscow Region, CSKA Moscow downed AX Armani Exchange Milan in Kaliningrad, Russia, and ALBA Berlin bounced back with a big win against KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The regular season's halfway mark arrives after the first Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games of 2020. Round 17 brings rematches of EuroLeague Championship Games – CSKA vs. Panathinaikos and Olympiacos vs. Fenerbahce – and of 7DAYS EuroCup Finals – Valencia vs. ALBA – as well as one of the most historical matchups in European basketball history, Zalgiris vs. Maccabi. Here are some suggestions for Round 17 of EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge based on recent performances:

Bojan Dubljevic, Valencia Basket (2.74 million) – Right in the prime of his career and setting new career-highs every week, Dubljevic earned the Round 16 MVP honor with a PIR of 42 in Valencia's win. He went on to be co-MVP of the Spanish League this weekend with a PIR of 29. Dubljevic is very productive in limited playing time, a must-have player right now.

Billy Baron, Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade (1.64 million) – Baron was just unstoppable against Zenit, scoring 26 of his team's 65 points while missing just 2 shots. In the last five games, Baron has averaged 16.6 points on 18-for-32 three-point shooting. When a shooter is hot, you have to keep feeding him, and I am sure Zvezda will keep running its offense through Lorenzo Brown.

Daniel Hackett, CSKA Moscow (900,000) – If you need a cheap addition to your Fantasy Challenge team, Hackett could be your man after his outstanding performance against Milan: 28 points, 6-for-9 three-point shooting, 4 rebounds and 4 assists for a PIR of 27. It may be a momentum-shifter for him, as CSKA plays a very important home game against high-scoring Panathinaikos.

Landry Nnoko, ALBA Berlin (1.69 million) – He was a key fantasy player at the beginning of the season but faded a little bit. Landry has bounced back recently, averaging 9.8 rebounds and a PIR of 17.5 in the last four games based on a couple of double-doubles. ALBA returns to Valencia for the first time since losing the EuroCup Finals last season, so the extra motivation will be there, too.

David Lighty, LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne (1.70 million) – ASVEL keeps rolling, partly because Lighty has been unstoppable lately. In the last four games, Lighty has averaged 17.3 points and a PIR of 20.5. He got a PIR of 16 or higher in each of those games, showing great consistency. ASVEL will need Lighty's best to stop Real Madrid in a highly-anticipated showdown.
