EuroLeague clubs celebrate #EducationDay!

The vital importance of learning to young and old people alike will be the theme of Round 21 in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, whose 18 clubs join all this week in celebrating the International Day of Education.

To recognize education as a human right, a civic good and a public responsibility, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24 as International Day of Education. The role of education for peace and development may seem self-evident, but millions around the world do not get full opportunities to learn. Inclusive, quality and lifelong education is an equitable answer to pervasive problems such as poverty and gender inequality, just to name a couple.

EuroLeague clubs and protagonists like Luis Scola, Kostas Sloukas and Ettore Messina will be talking all week about education, from its role in their own development to the need for learning to be central to the lives of everyone, especially children.

Some players will relate their experiences in education, and the values that they try to teach their own children, in a week-long series of videos on Euroleague Basketball digital channels and broadcasts.

Others will visit local schools and other educational organizations for underprivileged children to encourage a love of learning. Several clubs will make education a focus of their social media campaigns throughout the week, offering prizes and merchandise to boost the profile of education among their fans.

On Thursday and Friday, the International Day of Education comes alive at EuroLeague arenas around the continent as fans will be entertained during games with themed music playlists, skills challenges and promotions – all focused on the universal need for a good education to teach the kinds of values that sports like basketball also promote.

The halls of at least one EuroLeague arena will feature activities and displays meant to attract children to the specific opportunity of learning science. In a couple more, fans will also be encouraged to do their part by donating school supplies that clubs are collecting to give to children without the means to buy their own tools of learning.

It's all about the getting behind #EducationDay and learning throughout life, this week in the EuroLeague!
