Fenerbahce overcomes Paris, 83-87, to strengthen grip on second place

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul held off Paris Basketball, 83-87, in a thrilling Monday night makeup game originally scheduled for Round 17. Fenerbahce is now in second place with an 18-9 record, with Paris tied for fourth at 16-11.
The hosts flew into a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter and were up 45-37 at the break. Fenerbahce recovered to go ahead in the third quarter and held on during the tight closing stages. Marko Guduric paced the winners with 16 points, with Nigel Hayes-Davis and Tarik Biberovic scoring 14, while Wade Baldwin paired 11 points with 8 assists. TJ Shorts again inspired Paris with 22 points and 8 assists, with Nadir Hifi scoring 15 and Tyson Ward netting 14.

Shorts opened the scoring from midrange and Ward added a driving layup. Kevarrius Hayes slammed an alley-oop and Shorts netted a three-point play for a 9-1 lead, before Hayes-Davis made Fenerbahce’s first buckets with a floater and a triple. Hifi and Yakuba Ouattara kept Paris moving, 14-6, but triples from Biberovic and Sertac Sanli followed by Biberovic’s layup tied it, 16-16. Mikael Jantunen’s triple and Maodo Lo’s reverse layup restored Paris’s lead, and Ward’s three-pointer followed by Shorts’ jumper delivered a 26-16 edge after 10 minutes.
Nicolo Melli’s tip-in to start the second quarter snapped a 10-0 run, but Shorts and Jantunen preserved a healthy home lead. Bandja Sy exploded a transition alley-oop for a 32-18 lead, but Bonzie Colson hit back with 5 straight points. Leo Cavaliere and Lo’s three maintained a double-digit lead, which Khem Birch narrowed with a layup-and-one. Dyshawn Pierre’s triple pulled it back to 41-35, but Shorts netted twice inside to give his team a 45-37 interval lead.
Guduric owned the early stages of the third, scoring three baskets to pull it back to 47-45. Ward hit from deep and Shorts added another inside basket, but Hayes-Davis and Pierre struck from long-range to give Fener its first lead, 52-53. Biberovic added a tough three and Birch capped a 0-14 run from the foul line for a 52-61 lead, as Paris went scoreless for nearly five minutes before Hayes made an alley-oop layup. Shorts added a three-point play and Sy scored in transition, making it 60-63 with ten minutes left.
Hayes from close range and Ward from deep forced a lead change early in the fourth, but Sanli tied it up with a putback, 65-65. Ward’s fourth triple of the night was answered by Biberovic from deep, before Baldwin’s dunk was followed by Biberovic’s corner three for a 71-76 lead with three minutes left. Baldwin added a jumper to complete a 0-9 run, but Hifi’s three gave Paris hope, 75-78. Hayes-Davis free throws were followed by another Hifi triple, before Baldwin and Shorts traded inside blows to make it 80-82. Guduric added a three-point play with 12 seconds left, and another Hifi triple wasn’t enough to save Paris.
