Valencia Basket named Alex Mumbru the team's new head coach on Tuesday. The sides signed a contract through the end of the 2024-25 season. Mumbru, 43, arrives from Bilbao Basket, where he spent the last 12 seasons - nine of them as a player. He became the team's head coach after his retirement as a player and helped Bilbao win promotion to the Spanish first division in 2019. Mumbru has coached Bilbao at the top Spanish level for the last three seasons. Last season they finished in ninth place with a 16-18 record. As a player, Mumbru helped Bilbao reach the Spanish League finals in 2011, the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs in 2012 and the 7DAYS EuroCup Championship Game in 2013.

Mumbru also played for Real Madrid and Joventut Badalona and had two stints with each team. He helped Real win the Spanish League and EuroCup titles in 2007 and lifted the FIBA EuroCup trophy with Joventut in 2006. Mumbru was also successful with the Spanish national team, helping it to respective gold medals at the 2006 Basketball World Cup and EuroBasket 2009. He also won silver medals at the 2008 Olympic Games and EuroBasket 2007 and bronze at EuroBasket 2013.
