Trefl Sopot will be making its long-awaited return to the BKT EuroCup this season. Nearly every game will have some special meaning as the club tries to cement itself as a rising force in continental hoops. Here are just a few of the key dates on the team’s calendar.
Round 1: Ulm is the opponent for Sopot’s EuroCup return
When the bright lights shine down for the opening tip on September 25, Sopot will play its first EuroCup game since 2012! It’s been a well-deserved return as Coach Zan Tabak has raised the team’s profile by winning two trophies in his two seasons at the club, including the Polish League crown last season.
Opening the season in itself should be a reason for celebration and doing so at home against ratiopharm Ulm, a respected EuroCup side from a neighboring country only adds to the excitement. Round 1 will mark the start of a new chapter in club history.
Round 12: Coach Tabak and co. visit Badalona
Coach Tabak brings a wealth of experience with him, including playing the first two seasons of the EuroCup with Joventut Badalona, where he played one season under Coach Aito Garcia Reneses and was a teammate of a young Rudy Fernandez.
Tabak played professionally for three Spanish clubs and served as the head coach of five teams from Spain. The trip for Sopot to face Joventut for the first time is another historic moment for the club and it is only fitting that Tabak lead the way.
Round 15: Ponitka and Bahcesehir come for a visit
From the moment it was announced that Mateusz Ponitka had signed with Bahcesehir College Istanbul, there was some excitement in Sopot. In fact, the club even tweeted out the dates of their games against the captain of the Polish national team.
Naturally, the more exciting of the two fixtures will be the one in Poland in Round 15. It will also be Sopot’s penultimate home game in the regular season. If Sopot is going to make a run at a spot in the EuroCup Playoffs, this could be a critical contest.
