Hamburg narrowly avoids historic collapse for first victory

Veolia Towers Hamburg narrowly avoided a would-be historic collapse in beating Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana 83-86 to claim its first victory of the season after nearly blowing a 28-point lead. In a battle of winless teams at the bottom of Group A, Hamburg was leading 42-70 late in the third quarter but Cedevita trimmed the deficit to one point in the waning seconds. The biggest comeback in BKT EuroCup history was 24 points on multiple occasions.
Aljami Durham led the way with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for Hamburg, which improved to 1-6. Mark Hughes added 16 points - including 4 free throws in the closing seconds, Lukas Meisner scored 14 points and Aleksander Dziewa had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Cedevita is still looking for its first win at 0-7 despite Jaka Blazic scoring 24 points and Klemen Prepelic hitting for 23 points.
Both teams were slow to score in the early going with VJ King’s layup the first basket for 1-2 after nearly 2 minutes. The game went back and forth until Hamburg picked up 6 straight points for a 6-10 lead. Cedevita evened the game 12-12 and three more ties were followed by a Gregor Glas triple to push the hosts ahead 22-19 after 10 minutes.
Seth Hinrichs hit a three-pointer and helped Hamburg reclaim the lead 23-24. Cedevita went back ahead and was up 27-24 but then watched Meisner score 7 points in a 0-9 Hamburg run for a 27-33 advantage. Meisner added a second three-pointer and 2 free throws and Hughes chipped in a big dunk and triple as Hamburg was up 32-43. Cedevita pulled within 36-43 at intermission.

Nico Brauner came out of the break on fire with 3 three-pointers within 69 seconds and Hamburg went ahead 38-52. Cedevita just could not score at all and the guests got three-pointers from Durham in a 4-18 run over a 6-minute stretch for a 42-70 lead. Cedevita finally got some scoring with three baskets in 42 seconds to get within 48-70. The score was 49-74 after 30 minutes.
Cedevita started inspired in the fourth quarter with the first 16 points - three-pointers coming from Blazic and Glas - to trail 65-74. Durham’s jumper in the lane was Hamburg’s first points after more than 5 minutes. That did not stop the Cedevita surge with DJ Stewart’s 2 free throws making it 69-76 with 4 minutes to go. Blazic made it just a 2-point game with a three-pointer with 2 minutes remaining. Durham managed to convert a three-point play to slow down the hosts and Dziewa hit a big hook shot for a 74-81 cushion with 76 seconds remaining. Blazic drained another triple and it was again just 2 points, 79-81, with 37 ticks to go. Durham only split free throws and Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottmermann missed 2 foul shots as it remained a one-possession game. Prepelic could only make 1 free throw before Hughes twice drained two foul shots in the final 9.2 seconds to ice the game - with Prepelic hitting a three-pointer in between to make it 83-84.
