Ulm escapes for season sweep of Trento 

ratiopharm Ulm solidified its chances of reaching the playoffs by holding on for a hard-fought 83-85 victory at Dolomiti Energia Trento and completing the season sweep of their Group B series. Ulm could never really put the hosts away and even just barely escaped a miraculous Trento win to improve to 7-3 with three wins in the last four games. L.J. Figueroa led Ulm with 20 points, Trevion Williams collected 15 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists and Karim Jallow chipped in 10 points for the German side. Trento has now dropped three of its last four games for a 4-6 record. Kamar Baldwin paced six players in double figures with 18 points and 6 assists and Andrejs Grazulis added 15 points and 6 rebounds.

The game was close for the first 4 minutes, with Trento up 8-6. Ulm made the first run with the next 13 points, including three-pointers from Georginho De Paula and Jallow, to lead 8-19. Mattia Udom hit a three-pointer to snap a nearly 3 minute scoreless drought for Trento and Ulm was held to 2 free throws in the final 3 minutes of the quarter, but still led 13-21 when it finished. Williams scored the first 5 points of the second quarter as Ulm’s advantage grew to 13-26. Trento needed more than 2 minutes to finally score but then tallied the next 7 points make it 20-26. A Tobias Jensen three-pointer made it 20-31 for the road team, but Prentiss Hubb drained back-to-back triples and it was 26-33. After Baldwin hit for 8 points, Trento went into the break down just 42-43. 

Saliou Niang opened the scoring in the second half by putting the hosts ahead 44-43. Baldwin added a three-pointer and the 19-year-old Niang moved to 10 points – 10 more than his career total – and the hosts led 51-45. Ulm’s offense finally heated back up with the next seven points as Jallow’s three-point play made it 51-52. It went back and forth with 3 lead changes and 2 ties in the final 6 minutes and the score was even, 63-63, after 30 minutes. 

The game remained neck-and-neck with Grazulis scoring 5 points and Ulm teenager Pacome Dadiet picking up 4 points for a 68-69 lead with 6 minutes to go. Dakota Mathias added a triple for the guests, who moved ahead 68-74. Ulm managed a couple of defensive stops and Thomas Klepeisz’s long three-pointer extended the cushion to 70-79 with 3 minutes to play. Grazulis answered with 5 straight points and a free throw by Hubb trimmed it to 76-79. Figueroa’s tip-in was matched by a quick Baldwin score before Williams converted 2 free throws with 40 seconds left to leave Ulm up 78-83. Udom put back a miss and after Mathias converted just 1 of 2 free throws, Baldwin hit a corner triple to make it 83-84 with 3.9 seconds to go. With 3.0 seconds left, Mathias made the first free throw but intentionally missed the second. Trento grabbed the rebound and Baldwin banked in a long three-pointer but it was just after the buzzer – missing a chance for the game-winning miracle shot.

Unbeaten Gran Canaria cruises past Aris, 93-65

Dreamland Gran Canaria kept its perfect record intact, with no-doubt-about-it 93-65 win over the visiting Aris Midea Thessaloniki on Wednesday night. Gran Canaria improved to a 10-0 record, keeping a two-game lead atop of the Group B standings, while Aris dropped to 3-7.

With Aris playing zone defense from the get-go, Gran Canaria hit 6 three-pointers in the first quarter to open a double-digit lead, then never allowed Aris to get closer than 9 points the rest of the way. The hosts blew the game wide open in the third quarter, and cruised to another win. Roko Prkacin paced the winners with 13 points and 8 rebounds. A.J. Slaughter, Miquel Salvo and Ben Lammers scored 11 apiece, while Sylven Landesberg finished with 10 points. Vassilis Toliopoulos scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half for Aris, and Silvio De Sousa was the other visitor in double figures with 10 points in defeat.

Aris started with zone defense, but Slaughter nailed back-to-back triples to get things started. Toliopoulos and De Sousa got Aris going and made it 11-13. Slaughter hit his third three-pointer and started a 14-0 run capped by back-to-back threes from Andrew Albicy and Salvo to make it 25-13. The hosts took a 12-point margin into the second quarter, where Toliopoulos scored 8 points to keep the hosts from running away with it. Prkacin made moves inside that kept Gran Canaria up 41-30 before Toliopoulos and Nicolas Brussino traded tree-pointers. Gran Canaria held a 49-38 advantage at the break.

The hosts used a three from Pierre Pelos and a three-point play from Brussino to extend the margin to 57-41 early in the third. Gran Canaria's defense was forcing turnovers and controlling the defensive boards, as Prkacin and Lammers extended the difference to 65-45. The quarter finished with Gran Canaria holding a firm 72-50 margin and the defending champs were well on their way to another win. The pace and scoring both slowed down as Gran Canaria was closing out the game, but the lead got as big as 91-61 before the final buzzer.

The defending champions continue to ride roughshod over Group B with another blowout win.

Joventut Badalona grabs impressive road win at Beşiktaş Basketbol, 81-85

Joventut Badalona secured its second win in a row by downing Besiktas Emlakjet Istanbul 81-85 at BJK Emlakjet Sports & Event Hall in Round 10 of the 2023-24 BKT EuroCup Regular Season on Wednesday evening. As a result of this triumph, Joventut improved to a 5-5 record in Group A, while Besiktas dropped to 6-4.

Andres Feliz led the way for Joventut with a team-high 21 points, with Andrew Andrews and Pep Busquets adding 11 points apiece. Tyler Cook had 10 points, too. For Besiktas, Jonah Mathews exploded for a game-high 28 points, hitting 6 three-pointers, but it came in a defeat. Derek Needham was the only other Besiktas player to hit double figures, netting 22 points.

### Not much to separate the teams at first

In what was a well-fought first quarter, it became a back-and-forth affair. Joventut managed to take an early 5-point lead thanks to 5 straight points from Busquets, 4-9, but Mathews started to find his groove to ensure Besiktas trailed by just 1 point, 14-15, after the opening 10 minutes.

### Joventut responded after a Besiktas push

Besiktas took the lead for the second time in the game when Mathews knocked down a three, 17-15, to open the second quarter. Just like in the first quarter, neither side backed down and that resulted in the scoreline swinging from one team to the other. However, with 2:50 remaining, Joventut set a game-high lead, 27-34, after going on a 0-10 run. Besiktas ended up pulling it close, 33-34, but 3 free throws by Pau Ribas with 1 second left meant it was a 33-37 ballgame at halftime.

### The battle continued in the third

Despite some heroics from both Mathews for Besiktas and Feliz for Joventut, there was nothing to separate the two teams, 44-44, with 6:47 to go. Feliz then began to get some help from Andrews, 51-54, before the Dominican Republic international made it 51-56. Kerem Konan and Berk Ugurlu cut it to 55-58, but a dunk by Cook and then two successive 1-of-2 trips to the line ensured Joventut led by 7 points, 55-62, after 30 minutes.

### Joventut saw the win over the line

Cook started the fourth quarter in a similar manner to how he finished the third: by scoring a dunk, which set the biggest lead of the game, 55-64. Kenny Chery, who had a quiet point up until this point, then emerged with back-to-back threes to make it an 11-point game, 60-71, with 7:44 to go. But, Besiktas kept fighting back through Needham, Egehan Arna and Mathews, before Matthew Mitchell cut it to a 2-point contest, 75-77, with 2:37 remaining. Down the stretch, Andrews and Feliz stepped up to the plate, making it 75-81, but Mathews gave Besiktas hope, 78-81, with a triple to move to 28 points. With 20 seconds to go, Ribas showed his experience from the line by going 2-for-2, before Needham’s three made it 81-83. But Ribas once again stayed focused by knocking down 2 free throws as Joventut came away with an 81-85 win.

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica bounced back from a blowout loss last week to start the second half of the BKT EuroCup Regular Season with an 81-83 road victory over 7bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys. New acquisition Yogi Ferrell hit 2 three-pointers and 4 free throws in the final 95 seconds as Buducnost improved to 4-6 in Group B after having lost five of its last six games, including a 27-point defeat in Round 9 at first-place Dreamland Gran Canaria. Marvin Jones led the winners with 16 points and Ferrell had 14 points. Lietkabelis dropped to 4-6 with a second straight loss after having won three in a row. Gediminas Orelik and Deividas Sirvydas both scored 21 points and Vytenis Lipkevicius added 16 points in the defeat. 

Sirvydis opened the scoring with a three-pointer for the hosts and Buducnost needed more than 2 minutes before finally scoring on McKinley Wright’s free throws. It was 7-2 before the guests finally hit their first basket through Vladimir Mihailovic. Lipkevicius added a triple of his own and Lietkabelis was up 12-6. Buducnost went on a 0-6 run over more than 2 minutes to even the game 12-12. Buducnost twice more tied the game before a Martynas Varnas triple helped Lietkabelis lead 21-18 after 10 minutes.  After Lietkabelis scored the first points of the second quarter, Andrija Slavkovic hit 4 points in a 0-6 spurt to give Buducnost its first lead 23-24. Three lead changes were followed by a Sirvydas triple and the home side led 30-26. Nearly 4 minutes of scoreless defense got Buducnost level and it was 32-35 after Jones scored. The guests led 37-39 at the break.

Lietkabelis kept Buducnost off the board for the first 3 minutes of the second half and moved ahead 43-39. Buducnost would not let the hosts pull away, however, as Brandon Paul hit 2 three-pointers in a 2-11 surge to lead 45-50. A Mihailovic triple and Jones floater extended the cushion to 52-59 and Buducnost was up 54-61 after 30 minutes.  The advantage swelled to 54-63 after Ferrell’s score to start the final frame. However, Orelik knocked down 2 three-pointers and Lietkabelis pulled within 61-66. Sirvydis did not let his team go down without a fight, putting back an offensive rebound and hitting a layup to make it 66-68 with 3 minutes to play. A triple by Varnas pulled the hosts within 71-72 with 113 seconds left. Ferrell countered with 2 three-pointers and Buducnost was up 71-78 with 36 seconds remaining. Lietkabelis was not done, as Orelik and Sirvydis downed three-pointers on either side of 2 free throws by Ferrell, and suddenly it was 78-80. Ferrell added 2more foul shots with 18 seconds, however, and those proved good enough for the win.

It took the help of a new roster addition, but Buducnost found success away from home for the first time this season.

Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv made another step closer toward returning to the BKT EuroCup Playoffs by downing Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana 80-95 on Wednesday. Hapoel lifted its record to 7-2 and retained third place in Group A, while Cedevita remained winless at 0-10.

Hapoel led for most of the night until Cedevita made a third-quarter run behind Jaka Blazic and Karlo Matkovic to take a 54-53 lead. But Hapoel answered with a 0-7 run, opened a double-digit lead before the end of the third quarter and cruised to victory. Jaylen Hoard led five double-digit Hapoel scorers with 17 points. Braian Angola scored 15, Idan Zalmanson 13, Xavier Munford 12 and Bar Timor 11, while J'Covan Brown added 8 points and 9 assists. For Cedevita, Blazic finished with 21 points and 8 rebounds.  Matkovic had 19 point and 5 blocks. D.J. Stewart collected 14 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds, while Gregor Glas finished with 11 points in defeat.

The game had at fast pace from the start, with Matkovic dunking on a fastbreak and delivering a block to help the hosts to a 9-6 lead. Angola responded, nailing a triple before Hoard strung together 7 points to open an 11-18 lead for the visitors. Cedevita finished the quarter with a triple from Stewart and a three-point play from Glas to pull within 17-18. Timor took it to the rim twice early in the second quarter, and after another triple from Stewart, Idan Zalmanson scored twice to open a 22-28 Hapoel advantage. The hosts countered with 6 consecutive points, including another three-point play from Glas, but triples from John Holland and Munford filled a 2-12 run capped by Tomer Ginat's fastbreak basket to make it 30-40. Blazic stopped the bleeding with a tough corner triple. He and Matkovic combined for 8 more points in the final 2 minutes of the quarter to cut the difference to 41-45 at the break.

Hapoel scored on its first four trips of the third quarter to double the margin, but Matkovic scored 7 points, and then a fastbreak layup from Blazic got Cedevita in front 54-53. Angola answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, and Hapoel kept running in transition at any opportunity. Fastbreak baskets from Brown and Hoard restored a 54-60 advantage. Hapoel did not stop there, but put together another 0-7 run capped by another Angola triple that made it 57-69. The visitors took a 10-point margin into the final quarter, and a fastreak basket by Angola made it 59-72 after just 81 seconds. A quick 5 points from Zalmanson, including a three-point play, opened a 62-77 advantage, and Hapoel never let the hosts into the game again even though Blazic, Luka Scuka and Glas each hit a three-pointer for the hosts. Hapoel was scoring with ease through Brown, Hoard and Timor, extending the margin to 70-86 before closing out the game.

Hapoel kept is strong start in Group A going with another road win on Wednesday.

Paris Basketball grabbed its seventh road win in Group A by overwhelming Wolves Wilnius 79-110 in the Lithuanian capital on Wednesday. Paris improved to 9-1 in the standings while Wolves dropped to 4-5.

T.J. Shorts and Nadir Hifi led the winners with 24 points apiece. Shorts added 11 assists for a double-double, picking up just 1 turnover. Leon Kratzer added 12 points for Paris, which had five others players with at least 8 points. Adas Juskevicius led Wolves with 15 points. Regimantas Miniotas added 10 for the hosts.

### Paris built double-digit lead 

Miniotas got Wolves going with a triple, getting help from Djordje Gagic and Juskevicius to build a 11-5 lead. Hifi and Collin Malcolm stepped up for Paris, Mikael Jantunen buried a three-pointer and Shorts's floater put the guests back ahead, 13-14. Shorts struck twice from downtown, Kratzer added a tip-in and Tyson Ward's coast-to-coast layup boosted Paris's lead to 13-24 after 10 minutes.

Shorts capped a 0-17 Paris run with a driving layup. Gagic and Kratzer exchanged dunks, then Bandja Sy's corner triple made it a 18-point game, 15-33. Shorts kept pacing Paris and Hifi buried a couple of three-pointers to break the game open, 19-44. Hifi struck from beyond the arc and added a jumper, boosting his team's lead to 26-51. Arnas Berucka and Vaidas Karinauskas brought Wolves closer, 35-58, at halftime. 

### Shorts stopped Wolves' comeback

Kratzer took over with an alley-oop slam and Malcolm added a fastbreak layup to boost the guests' margin to 35-62. Tre'Shawn Thurman and Gagic quickly answered to give Wolves hope at 46-64, after an 11-2 run. Shorts followed a floater with a jumper, getting help from Hifi to restore a 50-74 Paris margin. Kratzer dunked again and an unstoppable Shorts kept Paris way out of trouble, 58-81, after 30 minutes.

Paris opted to slow down its offense early in the fourth quarter, trying to run the game clock down, but kept finding good scoring option, finding Kratzer down low. Hifi sealed the outcome with his fifth three-pointer, 67-91, as even when Wolves kept trying until the final buzzer, Paris had cruised to yet another well-deserved road win.

Turk Telekom B.K. finally ended its seven-game losing streak in the EuroCup by beating U-BT Cluj-Napoca, and this win could spark a miraculous surge towards the playoffs.

Not much has gone to plan for Turk Telekom Ankara in the BKT EuroCup this season. However, [Tuesday evening’s 95-84 win over U-BT Cluj-Napoca](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/turk-telekom-basketbol-gets-back-on-the-right-track-against-ubt-cluj-napoca-95-84/) in Round 10 could end up being a positive step in the right direction.

After seven straight defeats, dating back to Round 2, Turk Telekom at last knows what it is like to win again in the EuroCup. Just over seven months since losing the EuroCup Final to Dreamland Gran Canaria, seeing Turk Telekom with a 2-8 record is still a shock, but perhaps we are about to see a miracle in the EuroCup.

After all, defeating Cluj has not been an easy task for any team this season. Coming into Tuesday evening’s game, the Romanian side had an impressive 7-2 record and has largely had the type of campaign that many expected from Turk Telekom.

After sinking to the foot of the Group A standings, Turk Telekom aim to snap a seven-game losing streak with a visit from high-flying Cluj, who are coming-off a remarkable 120-111 overtime victory versus Lietkabelis, which featured 20 points on 6-of-8 three-point shooting from Jarrell Eddie.

### A first half of the season to forget

Why is that, you may ask? Despite Turk Telekom’s EuroCup runner-up roster getting torn apart, and Erdem Can leaving as head coach, the club’s front office made several moves that put the team in position to replicate last year’s success.

Just look at this: Jalen Adams, who has not played since Round 7, dropped down to the EuroCup after making a positive impact with Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague last season; James Palmer moved to Turk Telekom after a stellar debut EuroCup campaign with Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse; Tyrone Wallace joined the club following an equally impressive first EuroCup campaign with Paris Basketball; and Steven Enoch followed Adams’s path by leaving a EuroLeague club in favor for one in the EuroCup.

But, nine games in to the 2023-24 EuroCup season, Turk Telekom was 1-8 and it looked like the wheels had well and truly fallen off. Add in the fact that Nenad Canak, the man charged with leading this project, was sacked as head coach after Round 3 – when Turk Telekom was 1-2 – and it paints a miserable picture.

### Good times ahead?

There is reason to be optimistic, though. Selcuk Ernak ended up being named as Coach Canak’s replacement ahead of Round 5 and went winless in his first five games in charge, but Tuesday night showed that the players are in his corner.

James Palmer and Tyrone Wallace combined for 39 points, 9 rebounds, 12 assists and 5 steals as Turk Telekom Ankara beat U-BT Cluj-Napoca 95-84 in Round 10 of the 2023-24 BKT EuroCup Regular Season.

There were a couple of positive interactions between the 53-year-old tactician and Turkish duo Okben Ulubay and Ismail Cem Ulusoy late in the game, while Palmer erupted for a season-high 24 points, Wallace had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals in an all-round performance, and Enoch added 14 points, too.

“In the first half, we gave up 48 points. We had a good offensive rhythm and we scored 53,” said Coach Ernak in the post-game flash interview. “In the second half, we only allowed 36 points. This is how you win in the EuroCup. You cannot survive only with offense, so I want to thank the players that they could accomplish this, even with a short roster.”

The important thing for Turk Telekom and Coach Ernak is to ensure that the good times continue, with the Turkish side facing the only team it had beaten prior to Tuesday night, Buducnost VOLI Podgorica, on the road in Round 11.

“We are going through tough days as a club,” Ernak added in the post-game press conference. “We are playing with only three foreign players, but I can’t express how much I respect my players’ hustle today and their positive attitude as a team.”

There are still nine games left in the EuroCup Regular Season and with Turk Telekom just a couple of games back of Dolomiti Energia Trento in sixth, albeit with Wednesday’s fixtures still to take place, it is not far-fetched to think that this squad could create a miracle.

First up, though, is Buducnost. If Turk Telekom wins that game and gets some momentum going, we could be looking at a very dangerous side come playoff time. But, before any of that, Turk Telekom needs to prove that Tuesday evening was not a one-off.

The London Lions kept up their positive momentum in the EuroCup by winning their fifth straight game in the competition on Tuesday night, defeating Reyer Venezia 91-95 in Italy.

It hasn’t taken the London Lions too long to be feared in the BKT EuroCup. If last season was a chance for experiments, this campaign has seen the English side show a resilience that often comes after one thing: winning.

Well, Petar Bozic’s squad definitely know how it feels to win. On Tuesday night, London went to Italy and beat an impressive Umana Reyer Venice side 91-95, despite facing adversity on the night.

The Lions search for a a fifth straight success after blasting over a century of points at Wolves, where 5 triples from Conor Morgan earned him an MVP award, whilst Reyer are also in form and are armed with Marco Spissu, who has recorded a PIR of at least 18 in five consecutive games.

### A historic run for the London Lions

That triumph meant that London has now won five straight games in the EuroCup for the first time in its history and it also improved its road record to a perfect 6-0, with an 8-2 mark overall.

Star forward Sam Dekker played in his second game since returning from injury in Venice, yet his night ended prematurely after being ejected. The 2022-23 All-EuroCup Second Team selection was called for a technical foul midway through the third quarter as he debated a call, having been hit with an unsportsmanlike foul at the halfway point of the opening quarter. He finished with 7 points and exited the game with London leading by just 3 points, 61-64.

Fortunately for Dekker and Coach Bozic, London is no longer a one-man show. Gabe Olaseni had his third double-double of the season, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Matt Morgan once again showed why he is one of the most dangerous guards in the competition with an impressive 19 points.

What’s more, Conor Morgan hit double figures in points for the eighth game in the last nine, netting 11 against Reyer, and Tarik Phillip chipped in with 10 points off the bench, although it could have been more if he had improved on his 3-of-10 night from the free-throw line.

### A captain’s performance

Another player who showed up in key moments was Jordan Taylor, who had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. The veteran point guard especially came to the fore in the fourth quarter, starting with an assist for a Josh Sharma layup to open the final act, 72-74. Later, his off-balanced layup set a 74-82 score.

Then, with Reyer making a late comeback, even cutting the gap to 88-90 with 1:08 minutes remaining, Taylor appeared with a three-pointer to give London breathing room, 88-93. He almost became the villain after fouling Rayjon Tucker on a three-point shot, which was his fifth foul and saw him watch the remaining 16 seconds from the sidelines, but the Reyer star could only go 1-of-3, before London saw the game over the line, 91-95.

### Good news and bad news

One of the more positive parts of the night was the opportunity given to youngster Kareem Queeley, as he played his most minutes in the EuroCup this season (14:33) and came up with a crucial three-point play that made it 74-80 at a point when Reyer was mounting a comeback. Those were his only points of the night, but playing in that type of atmosphere is likely to do wonders for the 22-year-old’s confidence.

The bad news, however, is that Donte Grantham ended up having to be helped to the sidelines early in the fourth quarter after picking up an injury. The EuroCup rookie has impressed in his debut campaign with London, particularly when Dekker was out with an injury of his own, so Lions fans will be crossing their fingers that it ends up being nothing serious.

So, on a night of highs and lows for London, Coach Bozic’s men showed once again that they have the wind in their sails. Next up for the Lions, they play host to the 1-9 Veolia Towers Hamburg at Copper Box Arena. Another win would see London take another big step towards securing a playoff berth, as the club’s dream of reaching the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague becomes a greater possibility with each passing victory.
