Looking for a recipe to stay in the Group B playoff race, last season's finalist found the ingredients in defense and rebounding its own misses.

 Turk Telekom knows it has to keep on winning 

Turk Telekom Ankara edged even closer to the playoffs ranks in Group B after beating Dolomiti Energia Trento 78-70. But the Turkish side knows it still has work to do.

Turk Telekom not only beat Trento for its fourth win in the last five games for a 5-9 record but it also now holds the tiebreaker over the Italian club, which dropped to 6-8. 

"It was a must win for us. You need to win all your home games to be able to qualify," Turk Telekom coach Selcuk Ernak, whose team moved to 3-4 at home this season, said. 

"Now we have won four of five and we are only thinking step by step, game by game. We have to keep on winning."

The 2023 EuroCup runner-up has home games left against 7bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys and Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse, but still must play at reigning champion Dreamland Gran Canaria and Slask Wroclaw in the last four rounds. 

### Turk Telekom's defense, offensive rebound were key

Turk Telekom did a good job defensively against Trento, holding the guests to just 70 points – 13.2 points below its average coming into the game. 

A major reason for that was limiting Andrejs Grazulis to just 3 points and keeping Kamar Baldwin under wraps at 8 points. Both of Trento’s stars came into the game averaging 14.1 points per game. 

“Except for the first quarter, I am pretty satisfied with the defense we played," the Turk Telekom coach said. "Trento is a very talented team and scores more than 80 points per game. We managed to keep them at 70 points. That was the key."

Turk Telekom also dominated the glass, winning the rebound battle 42-27 with 11 offensive rebounds to keep up its league-high average of 13.1. Trento managed just 3 boards off its own glass, 8.5 below its average. That helped Turk Telekom to a 13-6 advantage in second-chance points.

 Cluj secured postseason spot with an eye for more 

There was not much doubt about the outcome at BT-Arena on Wednesday night where U-BT Cluj-Napoca dominated on defense and rolled on offense en route to a playoff-clinching 90-74 win over the visiting Aris Midea Thessaloniki.

Cluj had built a 20-point margin in the third quarter and cruised the rest of the way against a visitor that has playoff aspirations of its own.

"Another great victory for us in the EuroCup so we are enjoying it, and we enjoy that we played a very good basketball," Cluj coach Mihai Silvasan said after the game.

"I think in the second half we showed a lot of quality basketball, especially on the defensive side."

Cluj won the middle two quarters 53-32, during which it forced 9 turnovers and held the visitors to 4-for-13 three-point shooting. That defense led to a bunch of fastbreaks and paved the way to a victory that sent the team into the playoffs – with an outlook for more.

### Cluj holds third place in Group B

"I am happy I could help the team win and we are now in a very good position," big man Emanuael Cate, who led the way with 18 points, said.

Indeed, Cluj's 10-4 records puts it alone in third place in Group B. Finishing there or in fourth place would bring home-court advantage in the eighthfinals, while second place means a jump right to the quarterfinals and a home game at that stage. Cluj now has a four-win advantage over the fifth place team but is just is a win behind second-place Dreamland Gran Canaria (11-3).

Cluj's coach does not want to get ahead of himself, however.

"We have four more games and we will take it game by game, and see in which place we finish," Silvasan said. "We have to play each game with this type of mentality, and we will be fine."

Telling numbers: Gran Canaria's ball circulation is key 

Dreamland Gran Canaria broke a three-game losing streak in Group B by topping 7bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys 84-92 on the road on Wednesday. Sharing the ball better than its opponent was arguably the biggest key to this win. 

The defending EuroCup champions finished the game with 27 assists and 11 turnovers. That means that head coach Jaka Lakovic's team dished 2.45 assists per each turnover. On the other hand, Lietkabelis struggled to circulate the ball as Gran Canaria's defense forced the hosts to a lot of one-on-one situations. The hosts ended up with more turnovers (15) than assists (13) in the game.

### Everybody was dishing for Gran Canaria 

It was a team effort, as Gran Canaria's main ballhandlers – playmakers A.J. Slaughter, Andrew Albicy and Ferran Bassas – combined for 7 assists and 8 turnovers. That means that the rest of the team compiled for 20 assists and just 3 turnovers. Nico Brussino dished 7 assists, had 0 turnovers and also finished the game with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Ethan Happ had 5 assists and 1 turnover. He averaged 1.7 assists in his first 10 games and boosted that average to 5.5 in the last two games.

### Difference in deep shooting, another key

Gran Canaria also shot the ball better from beyond the arc, which also made a difference in the game. The guests hit 12 of 29 three-pointers (41.4% 3FG) and limited Lietkabelis to just 10 of 32 three-point accuracy (31.3% 3FG). Gran Canaris deserves a lot of credit for its three-point defense, as Lietkabelis had buried 72 of 152 three-pointers (47.4% 3FG) in its previous six home games.

The guests stopped Lietkabelis shooters but had troubles against Deividas Sirvydis in the fourth quarter. Sirvydis scored 19 of his 31 points in the final 10 minutes, single-handedly giving Lietkabelis a chance to win the game. Happ, Albicy and Brussino allowed Gran Canaria to seal an important road win and help their team return to winning ways.

Cluj dismisses Aris, books playoff ticket

U-BT Cluj-Napoca protected its home floor in style and secured a spot in the playoffs with a convincing 90-74 win over the visiting Aris Midea Thessaloniki on Wednesday night. Cluj improved to 10-4 record in Group B, sweeping Aris, which dropped to 6-8 on the season. With four games to go, Cluj mathematically secured a finish among the top six teams in the group.

Cluj took control and lead for good with an 11-0 second-quarter run that opened its first double-digit lead. The visitors kept it close for the rest of the first half, but Cluj made multiple runs that saw it open a 22-point margin late in the third quarter and cruise to victory. Emanuel Cate led all scorers with 18 points, while Bryce Jones scored 10 of his 17 points in that key third quarter. Andrija Stipanovic scored 16 and DJ Seeley netted 13 for Cluj. Silvio De Sousa had 14 points for Aris, while Jonathan Stark finished with 13 in defeat.

### Cluj started fast, but Aris regrouped

Cluj scored the game's first 9 points behind a triple and 3 assists from DJ Seeley. But Aris answered through Vassilis Toliopoulos and De Sousa, to take 10-11 lead. The teams continued trading blows, with Stipanovic scoring on a three-point play and Roberts Blumbergs answering with a triple. But a long ball from Jarell Eddie and a three-point play from Cate got the hosts to a 23-22 lead after 10 minutes.

Cluj started the second quarter on fire, too, with Cate and Adam Mokoka combining for the first 7 points in an 11-0 run that Seeley capped with a jumper at 34-24. Eleftherios Bochoridis nailed a triple for Aris that helped stop the bleeding, but Seeley hit his own from long range, too, keeping Cluj's lead safe. Patrick Richard scored twice from close range, but Blumbergs knocked down another one from deep for Aris to trim the Cluj lead to 45-38 a halftime.

In the first 3 minutes of the third quarter Bryce Jones and Seeley his 2 triples each to open a 55-42 breach on the scoreboard. Roberto Gallinat and Jonathan Stark each hit a three to keep Aris in range, but only briefly because Seeley then sparked a 7-0 run that Stipanovic capped with a put-back layup. Cluj was not done, making a defensive stop after a defensive stop, and using another 7-0 spurt to extend the margin to 22 points, and 76-54 after 30 minutes.

Cate extended the lead to 24 points at the start of the fourth quarter before a 0-7 run by Aris behind Ronnie Harrell and Stark. The visitors kept fighting and Harrell and Stark combined for 7 more points to get the deficit down to 85-74, but it was too little too late for a comeback as Cluj closed it out without drama, booking a spot in the playoffs.

The long-time Group B leaders put an end to their three-game losing streak with a tight victory on the road.

 Gran Canaria bounces back to top host Lietkabelis, 84-92 

Dreamland Gran Canaria returned to winning ways in the BKT EuroCup Regular Season by downing 7bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys 84-92 on the road in Round 14 on Wednesday. Gran Canaria improved to 11-3 in the standings and could yet take back first place in Group B this week. Lietkabelis dropped to 5-9 and remains on the bubble for a playoff berth.

Ethan Happ paced the winners with 23 points on 10-for-13 two-point shooting, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Nico Brussino added 16 points while Miquel Salvo had 11 for Gran Canaria. Deividas Sirvydis led Lietkabelis with 31 points, 19 in the fourth quarter. Gediminas Orelik and Dovis Bickauskis each added 11 for the hosts.

### Gran Canaria took off early

Happ and Brussino combined for all points in a 0-7 run that gave Gran Canaria an early 2-7 lead. John Shurna joined the three-point shootout and Happ soon boosted the guests' margin to 6-13. Orelik and Gabrielius Maldunas fueled a 0-7 run that Vytenis Lipkevicius capped with a triple for a 13-13 tie. Brussino each struck from downtown, then Salvo and Pierre Pelos added layups for a 13-23 Gran Canaria lead after 10 minutes.

### Lietkabelis bounced back

Salvo buried a three-pointer to cap a 0-13 Gran Canaria run early in the second quarter. Lietkabelis had been scoreless for 6 minutes until Nikola Popovic hit a jumper. He got help from Sirvydis to bring the hosts within 20-30. Roko Prkacin and Salvo each scored down low for the visitors, then Amar Gegic boosted Gran Canaria to a 22-38 lead. Orelik stepped up for Lietkabelis, getting help from Sirvydis and Liutauras Lelevicius to bring the hosts within 38-45 at halftime.

### Gran Canaria held its ground

Brussino buried his fourth triple right after the break. Sirvydis answered with a layup and Lipkevicius struck twice from beyond the arc to bring Lietkebalis as close as 46-48. Gran Canaria found answers from downtown, as Shurna, A.J. Slaughter and Ferran Bassas hit a triple apiece to restore a 53-61 margin. Dovis Bickauskis also buried a three-pointer and Dziugas Slavinskas gave the hosts hope, 58-63, after 30 minutes.

### Down to the wire!

Sirvydis took over with 7 unanswered points to complete the hosts' comeback and give Lietkabelis a 65-63 edge early in the fourth quarter. Sylven Landesberg, Salvo and Happ provided answers on offense for Gran Canaria, but a red-hot Sirvydis single-handedly let Lietkabelis tie it again, 73-73, with over 4 minutes left. Shurna struck from downtown and Happ added a fastbreak layup in a 0-6 Gran Canaria run to break that tie. Sirvydis followed a layup with a three-pointer for a 78-79 score in the next-to-last minute. Happ scored down low and Andrew Albicy added a three-pointer that sealed the outcome, 78-85, with 1:02 left.

Turk Telekom Ankara took another step towards erasing its nightmare start to the season by knocking off Dolomiti Energia Trento 78-70 at home to close in on the playoffs ranks in Group B. Turk Telekom wasted an 11-point lead but regained control with a late 11-3 surge to grab its fourth win in the last five games for a 5-9 record. 

Yigitcan Saybir led the way with a career high 21 points, Steven Enoch collected 16 points and 13 rebounds and Tyrone Wallace chipped in 15 points. Trento saw its two-game winning streak end and fell to 6-8 in the group. Paul Biligha scored 13 points on the road but they were not enough as Andrejs Grazulis and Kamar Baldwin combined for just 11 points despite both averaging 14.1 points coming into the game. 

Turk Telekom did not start hot but led 6-0 after more than 3 minutes as Trento missed its first 4 shots and committed 3 turnovers before finally scoring. Saybir’s triple made it 9-2 and it was 13-4 after James Palmer scoresd twice. Davide Alviti answered with 7 points to push Trento ahead 17-20 after 10 minutes. The hosts evened the game 22-22 before the game went back and forth with five lead changes and two ties until Turk Telekom mounted an 8-0 run over 3 minutes for a 38-31 lead. The home side held a 38-34 advantage at the break. 

The three-pointers were falling in the first 2 minutes of the second half with both teams hitting twice from deep before Biligha score twice to help Trento tie it up 44-44. Turk Telekom got some stops defensively and Saybir scored 5 points in a 13-2 run over more than 6 minutes to see the hosts surge ahead 57-46. The score was 57-50 after 30 minutes. 

Trento had the better start to the fourth quarter with a 2-10 spurt to take the lead 59-60. That was the first of six lead changes with Turk Telekom scoring 6 straight points for a 69-64 cushion with 3 minutes to play. Wallace drained a big three-pointer and 2 free throws for a 74-67 lead with 72 seconds left. Alviti punched back with a three-pointer but fouled Okben Ulubay with 30 seconds and the Turkish forward made two free throws for a 76-70 lead to secure the win.

Wolves pulled out a dramatic 91-89 home win over the winless Cedevita to snap a six-game losing streak and improved to 5-9 in Group A, keeping playoff hopes alive. Already-eliminated Cedevita Olimpija dropped to 0-14. In a back-and-forth affair, the hosts made more plays down the stretch, with Rasheed Sulaimon's tough tie-breaking layup with 41 seconds left proving to be the game-winner. Sulaimon, playing in his first game since Round 6, made 5 of 8 three-pointers of the way to 23 points. Vaidas Kariniauskas added 15, Tre'shawn Thurman 12 and Kristupas Zemaitis 10 for the winners while Jeffery Taylor collected 13 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds. Karlo Matkovic had 21 points and 6 rebounds for Cedevita while Justin Cobbs added 15 points and DJ Stewart 12.

London came out smoking and finished strong to defeat host Hapoel  96-100 and guarantee its spot in the BKT EuroCup Playoffs for a second consecutive season. The victory lifted London to 10-4 in Group A, still behind second-place Tel Aviv (11-3), meaning both will be battling for a top-two finish and direct passage to the quarterfinals the rest of the way. Hapoel will hold the head-to-head advantage, however, having beaten London 90-98 earlier in the season. Heroes abounded for London, for whom newcomer David Nwaba led six double-figure scorers with 17 points. Conor Morgan and Luke Nelson added 15 each, Gabe Olaseni 12 and 10 rebounds, while Matthew Morgan scored 11 and Donte Grantham 10. Hapoel got 24 points from Xavier Munford, 17 from Kyle Alexander, 14 from Tomer Ginat and 13 from Dezmine wells while Bar Timor combined 15 with 12 assists.

Deividas Sirvydis of BC Lietkabelis has lit it up in the EuroCup in recent weeks.

As the regular season heads towards the final stretch, teams will be counting on their best performers to carry them as they make one last push. That applies for almost every squad across the BKT EuroCup, as the race for the playoffs, home-court advantage and a top-two finish are all on teams’ minds. 

One of those teams fighting for a playoff berth is 7bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys (5-8). The player it will be hoping can help it carry towards the postseason is [Deividas Sirvydis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/deividas-sirvydis/007029/), who has been one of the hottest – while arguably the most accurate – shooter in the entire competition in recent weeks.

### Sirvydis has been on fire for Lietkabelis

There are three players who scored more than 100 points over the last five rounds and Sirvydis is one of them. His 103 points, or 20.6 ppg., are third over that span, but what really stands out is his consistency.

Since Round 9, the 23-year-old guard has not scored fewer than 16 points in any of those games. He has, in fact, done it twice: both in Rounds 11 and 12, respectively, in a loss at Aris Midea Thessaloniki and a home win over ratiopharm Ulm.

In each of the other three games, Sirvydis has topped the 20-point mark. He scored 29 in a Round 9 loss against U-BT Cluj Napoca and had 21 apiece in games against Buducnost VOLI Podgorica and Dolomiti Energia Trento.

### Making the most of his shots

What Sirvydis has also managed to do is score a lot but with exceptional shooting percentages.

Over the last five games, the Lietkabelis guard is a fantastic 20-for-28 (71.4%) on two-pointers and 14-for-26 (53.8%) from three-point land.

With such production over the last five rounds, Sirvydis has climbed into third place in scoring for the season (17.3 ppg.), while improving his shooting accuracy to 64.8% on twos and 42.6% on threes this campaign.

His 34 field goals made are the fourth most over the last five games, but his shooting accuracy is far and beyond everybody else.

Sirvyids is the only player who has made at least 18 field goals over this five-game span, while he’s managed to shoot at above 60.0% accuracy in that time, all while making better than 50.0% of his shots from behind the arc.

Lietkabelis has a tough task on its hands when it hosts Dreamland Gran Canaria on Wednesday, so the Lithuanian team will need Sirvydis to continue playing at the same level he has been since late November. With Lietkabelis trying to register its sixth win of the season and position itself better in the playoff race, expect Sirvydis’s fingerprints to be all over this game.

The 23-year-old has been on fire on offense in recent weeks.

Here comes 2024! We start the year leading the Italian League with an 11-3 record and sitting 4-9 in our EuroCup group. It just shows how tough the EuroCup is. If you are a EuroLeague fan, you obviously know how tough that is, but I think the EuroCup has really improved this year. I think our biggest problem is that we have lost a couple of close games, and that's the big difference. Instead of being 4-9, we could be 6-7 or even 7-6, and then we would be moving up the standings a couple of spots. So I think we are not far off. I think most of our defeats have been close. We had some injuries piling up, so it just has been a difficult time, but it also speaks volumes of how tough this EuroCup group is.

Take Hapoel and Paris, for instance, scoring 100 points almost in every game. They are playing fast and very unselfish basketball. Both have given us problems, and they are posting some numbers we have never seen before at this level. They are playing great. The good news is that we play three of our next four games at home. We will probably need to win all five games to qualify, but I believe we can do it. We just made a new signing at the 'five' position in [Mfiondu Kabengele](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/reyer-bolsters-frontcourt-with-kabengele/), who's going to really help us out, and now [Max Heidegger](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/reyer-venezia-adds-scoring-punch-with-max-heidegger/) is on the way, too. It's going to be a tough task winning all five, but I think we just take one game at a time. I think it's definitely attainable, and we are playing great basketball now. We are playing really well in Italy, so now it's time to just keep fighting in the EuroCup and try to qualify to the playoffs.

This is my first EuroCup season in five years. In the meantime, I have been all over the world, so I have seen so many different styles of play. For me, I'm more experienced, but like I said before, the EuroCup has evolved every year. The EuroLeague and EuroCup have just got stronger and stronger. As you see in the EuroLeague, with all these NBA players who have come over here, and then the EuroCup, you have so much talent at this level. It has just continued and it shows the growth of basketball in Europe. It's fun to see, especially having played in the EuroCup five years ago and coming back. It's cool to see how competitive the EuroCup is.

### Holidays in Venice

Spending Christmas and New Year's Eve in Venice has been a dream for my family. It's hard not to think you are on vacation when you are living in such a beautiful, beautiful place. For us, it's amazing. My daughter has a school that she's going to start this week, which is really fun. She'll probably pick up some Italian. And then my wife and I, we are always working on our Spanish because I played in Spain, so it kind of helps in Italy because you can kind of understand some things.

During Christmas, we got to do some of the stuff that people do when they come to Venice. We have had some time here and there throughout the season and where we live, just a short little train ride over to Venice where all those gondolas are. So we did a Christmas Day gondola ride, my wife and I and our girls. They obviously don't understand how special it is, but when they are older and just seeing pictures and videos that me and my wife take, it will be a special memory that they are going to really cherish, and I'll cherish for the rest of my life.

### Meeting up with former teammates

Before Christmas, I got to see my old college teammates from both my colleges, Kevin Pangos and Alex Poythress. It's always fun seeing familiar faces and even a guy like Andrew Andrews, playing for Joventut. I grew up with him in Portland, Oregon. So just seeing some of your friends in Europe and in the same competition, it's always fun. Kevin just moved to Valencia, so I think for him it's going to be a good situation. And Spain is such a good place for him just the way they play, so I will definitely be tuned in to his games and will be excited to watch.

OK, it was not EuroCup, but did you see that dunk by our guy Rayjon Tucker? He is a beast! He is one of the best athletes I've ever seen with my own eyes, and I played in the NBA one season, played everywhere in the world. He is just an unbelievable athlete and just a great dude off the court. He is super down to earth, always having a good time, and when you are playing such a long season, it really makes it fun when you have guys that you like and you can get along with. So this group of guys, we have had our ups and downs with the season, but we are having a great time right now being together and going to work every day. But yeah, "Air Tuck" is a beast, man. No one can jump with that guy.

### The challenge ahead

Our next EuroCup game is against Besiktas. We lost by six points in Istanbul and that is one of the goals, to beat them by more points. This is what makes European basketball interesting. Some fans back home in the U.S., they don't understand why you are playing until the last buzzer even if you are up 6 or 7 points, but those things do matter when you are playing EuroLeague or EuroCup. In those type of leagues where everyone is so close in the standings, every point matters. So, the goal is 100% to try to win by more than six. You can't really worry about that as a player. You just have to play hard, and whatever happens, happens. But you have to you play every possession until the end, for sure, in Europe.

Like I said, we can only focus on the next game. One game at a time! I think we are such a dangerous team. We have such a great roster and, as you see, we are the best team in Italy right now, so we have to continue with that confidence and just know that we might be low in the standings, but we have had some tough games and it's a tough competition. We just have to continue to fight... and fight until the end!
