Round 4 of the BKT EuroCup was highlighted by a reckoning at the top of both Groups A and B as the herd of teams undefeated was thinned to only three. 


The impacts of starters - and reserves - so far this season

In Group A, Paris Basketball defeated the previously unbeaten London Lions in an overtime shootout that saw one of the largest contrasts in starter and bench production in recent history. While London’s starters outscored Paris's 81 to 55, Paris’s bench closed the gap outscoring London’s reserves 51-21 to earn a narrow victory. 

Those gaps in production have been the norm for these teams so far this season. As the graph above suggests, Paris’s starters have only played 50 more minutes than their bench to this point while London has played its starters over 70% of the time - comfortably the highest rate in the EuroCup even without having key contributor Sam Dekker active for two of their four games. Few teams in recent history have played their starters over 68% of the time, but London has set that course while looking like one of the better teams in Group A. 

In contrast, Paris’s reserves have outscored their opponents' second-stringers by 118 - a truly remarkable number that tells the story of their 4-0 start.

In Group B, Dreamland Gran Canaria took control of the top spot in the standings with a win over Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse. Splitting their minutes almost right down the middle between their starters and their reserves, Gran Canaria has been this season’s outlier, leveraging its depth more than any other team to get its repeat bid off to a fast start. The starters have played a EuroCup-low 49% of the team's minutes so far this season - not far below the 54% pace they set during their run to the EuroCup championship last season.

Among other superlatives, this season’s only other undefeated team, Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv, has watched its starters outscore those of its opponents by a league-best 73 points in only three games. While it is still very early, the contrast between when and how successfully this year’s top teams are rotating their subs has been an interesting footnote. What kind of impact those tendencies ultimately have on the standings and what kind of adjustments these teams make as the year wears on are worth monitoring.

In an interesting turn of events, Canak was let go by a fellow Group A side Turk Telekom Ankara earlier this week ahead of Round 4, but now finds himself back on the bench of Lietkabelis, where he took over as head coach in 2018 and held that position until this past summer when he went to Turk Telekom.

Lietkabelis opened this campaign with a 1-3 record under Stelmahers, and lost on its home floor against Dolomiti Energia Trento on Wednesday. Lietkabelis also holds a fifth-best 4-2 record in the Lithuanian League.

Now, the team will continue the season with Canak in charge, and in less than three weeks time, Lietkabelis will hosts Turk Telekom.

Canak, the 47-year-old tactician, guided Lietkabelis to 19 wins and 15 wins in the past two EuroCup regular seasons, including a 10-8 record last season, but Lietkabelis fell in the eighthfinals both times.

Before his time with Lietkabelis, Canak previously also coached MKK Spartak Subotica and Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade in the 2017-18 campaign, both of his native Serbia.

Many American players in Europe struggle with the cultural differences when they first arrive. Hassani Gravett had no such problems since he spent a part of his childhood there.

European upbringing helps Slask's lion-hearted Gravett adapt

[Hassani Gravett](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/hassani-gravett/012699/) is not the usual American player in the European game. The Slask Wroclaw guard and BKT EuroCup rookie already knew about how things were on the continent from having lived two years in Italy and some summers in Germany growing up.

"Some of my favorite memories I had growing up for some years of my childhood in Europe would have to be simple things, like having a lot of independence as a child," Gravett recalled. "My mom would leave early for work, and I remember having a change jar that I would get some Euros and go to the local bakery and choose some of - still to this day - the best pastries for breakfast before school. 

"Also things like going snowboarding and ice skating in the winter. I don't like cold weather, but I did like the activities that came along with the snow."

Gravett's mother served in the US Air Force and he moved around a lot growing up. He was born in Alabama but also lived in Washington state, Virginia, Georgia and Florida as well. 

"I think that because I had the opportunity to live in Europe with my mom, obviously the biggest challenge I faced was the language barrier. However, I would say that this shaped me into the person I am today, one who is able to adapt to any environment I am placed in," Gravett said. 

"Maybe I did not become fluent in other languages, per se, but I am able to pick up on certain words and cultural customs pretty easily, which allows me to create relationships in these communities as a foreigner."

Having spent time in Europe, Gravett also took a liking to European football, or soccer.

"It's funny because growing up as a child I played all sports, but it's crazy because my parents believe that I was originally the best at playing soccer," he says. "I was very successful as a child and always had a true knack for just playing the game so naturally. However, I never shared the same love for the game the way I did basketball so in middle school I decided to drop playing soccer."

Gravett said his favorite team was always Real Madrid and his favorite player was Marcelo.

"Of course, I liked Ronaldo as well, but I always respected Marcelo's speed and liked his hair," he said. 

Just like Marcelo, Gravett is also known for his impressive mane of hair – which when he wears out looks like a bit of a lion – the animal he also bares as a tattoo.

"The lion tattoo was my first tattoo I ever received. It was without a doubt always going to be my first tattoo. My favorite animal is a lion. My favorite movie as a kid was Lion King," said Gravett, who uses the name "Lionchild" on Instagram. 

"And to be honest when I have my hair fully grown and out it looks similar to a lion mane. So I've always looked at myself as Simba who had to grow into being Mufasa."

### Hoard kept leading Hapoel 

Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv remains undefeated in Group A after [it downed Veolia Towers Hamburg 72-111](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2023-24/veolia-towers-hamburg-hapoel-shlomo-tel-aviv/U2023/34/) in Round 4. Once again, Jaylen Hoard stepped up with a near-perfect performance. He finished the game with 18 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 4 fouls drawn, amassing a PIR of 26 in just 22 minutes on the floor. Hoard only missed from the foul line, hitting his 6 two-pointers and his only shot from beyond the arc. He has been rock solid until now, getting a PIR of 23 or higher in each of his three appearances. In other words, he has been one of the best players, if not the best, in the EuroCup this season.

Hoard finished the game with 18 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 4 fouls drawn, amassing a PIR of 26 in just 22 minutes on the floor.

Statistically speaking it is not easy to see a player have a perfect performance, but that is what Bandja Sy did by [leading Paris Basketball to a 102-108 double-overtime road victory against the London Lions](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2023-24/london-lions-paris-basketball/U2023/35/). Sy had 11 points, hitting his 4 shots inside the arc and his only attempt from downtown, in addition to adding 6 rebounds, 3 steals and block for a PIR of 21. He had no missed shots, picked up no fouls and had no turnovers in almost 24 minutes on the floor, which is a remarkable feat in modern basketball. Above all, Sy allowed Paris to keep its unbeaten record intact in Group A.

Sy had 11 points, hitting his 4 shots inside the arc and his only attempt from downtown, adding 6 rebounds, 3 steals and block for a PIR of 21.

### Biligha helped Trento break curse

Dolimiti Energia Trento was on a 24-game road losing streak in the competition, but that streak came to an end with [a last-second victory against 7bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys, 92-93](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2023-24/7bet-lietkabelis-panevezys-dolomiti-energia-trento/U2023/37/). Starting center Paul Biligha is a big reason why the Italian side came out on top. He was very effective down low, getting 13 points on 6 of 10 two-pointers, while he also added 3 rebounds, 2 steals, a season-high 4 blocks and 3 fouls drawn for a PIR of 17. Quinn Ellis got all the attention, hitting the game-winning floater in the very last second of the game, but Trento could not have broken its EuroCup road curse without Biligha's efforts under both baskets.

### Pelos delivered against former team

Adjusting to a new team is not easy, especially if your new squad is the reigning champion. Pierre Pelos joined Dreamland Gran Canaria last summer and on Wednesday night [he played against his former team, Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2023-24/dreamland-gran-canaria-mincidelice-jl-bourg-en-bresse/U2023/36/), for the first time since leaving. Pelos had a impressive game, coming off the bench to get 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting. What’s more, he amassed 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block for a PIR of 21 in just 17 minutes. Gran Canaria made a lot of frontcourt changes in the offseason, but Pelos, Ben Lammers and Ethan Happ are proving that the Spanish side is once again one of the teams to beat this season.

### Delgado shined in losing effort

Besiktas Emlakjet Istanbul registered its first loss in shocking fashion. Despite leading 80-87 with 23.3 seconds left on the road at Wolves Vilnius, the Turkish side [ended up falling to defeat, 90-88](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2023-24/wolves-vilnius-besiktas-emlakjet-istanbul/U2023/32/). Center Angel Delgado had a strong performance in the losing effort, hitting 8-of-8 two-pointers on his way to a personal-best 18 points. He grabbed 6 rebounds, dished 3 assists, had 1 block and drew 9 fouls to amass a season-high PIR of 29. Despite his team's loss, Delgado proved he is arguably one of the best centers in the competition, having helped Besiktas record a 3-1 record in Group A.

### Prepelic's promising return

Klemen Prepelic is back in his native Slovenia to wear Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana's jersey for at least two months. He could not help his team get a victory on his EuroCup return, however, as [Cedevita registered an 83-90 home loss against Prometey Slobozhanske](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2023-24/cedevita-olimpija-ljubljana-prometey-slobozhanske/U2023/31/). Prepelic had a very promising performance, finishing the game with a 16-point, 11-assist double-double. It was his first EuroCup double-double in his 83th game in the competition. Prepelic drew 12 fouls, a new EuroCup season high, a club record and just 2 away from matching the competition's all-time record. Prepelic had a PIR of 20.

Klemen Prepelic finished the game against Prometey Slobozhanske with a double-double of 16 points and 11 assists. It was his first EuroCup double-double in his 83th game in the competition.

Thurman finished with a game-high 31 points, of which 6 came in the final 10 seconds of the contest. En route to those 31 points, he went 8-of-9 on two-pointers and 4-of-6 from three-point range, while he made 3 of his 6 free throws. The Wolves forward also grabbed 7 rebounds, dished 1 assist, recorded 1 steal and drew 7 fouls en route to his round-leading 37 PIR. This was just the third EuroCup game for both Thurman and Wolves.

The second-highest PIR came from ratiopharm Ulm playmaker [Georginho de Paula](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/georginho-de-paula-/012703/), who had a 36 PIR in his team’s 78-91 win at Turk Telekom Ankara. The Brazilian finished with a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double, in addition to having 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 3 fouls drawn. In third place is [Marco Spissu](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/marco-spissu/004381/), who amassed a 31 PIR after recording 24 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists in Umana Reyer Venice’s 79-64 win against Joventut Badalona. Turk Telekom Ankara has named Selcuk Ernak as its new head coach, with the 53-year-old [replacing Nenad Canak](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/turk-telekom-bk-parts-ways-with-nenad-canak/). Three seasons after last appearing in the competition, Coach Ernak takes charge of last season’s EuroCup runner-up.

Ernak ended a five-year spell in charge of fellow Turkish side Darussafaka over the summer, having previously led the team in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and the BKT EuroCup. He oversaw Darussafaka’s return to the EuroLeague in the 2018-19 season before guiding the team in the EuroCup in the 2019-20 campaign. Darussafaka went a league-worst 5-25 in the EuroLeague regular season and 5-5 in the EuroCup regular season, then 3-3 in the Top 16.

Canak, who was dismissed as Turk Telekom boss on Tuesday, oversaw a 1-2 record in this season’s EuroCup and a 2-2 mark in the Turkish League. On Wednesday night, interim head coach Can Akin saw Turk Telekom fall 78-91 at home to ratiopharm Ulm, as the team fell to 1-3 in the EuroCup. Coach Ernak is now tasked with trying to turn around Turk Telekom's European campaign as it hopes to once again reach the latter stages of the EuroCup.

It looked like the all too familiar script of Dolomiti Energia Trento losing a road game in the BTK EuroCup would remain unchanged after the Italian side threw away an 11-point lead [against 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys in a rip-roaring Group B contest](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/trento-stuns-liekabelis-92-93-thanks-to-last-gasp-ellis-floater/) on Wednesday night.

Having led 70-81 midway through the fourth quarter and then 81-91 halfway through the fourth quarter, Trento allowed the home side to turn the game on its head with an 11-0 run. With only 4 seconds left on the clock, 20-year-old playmaker Ellis Quinn dribbled his way into the paint and unleashed a sweet floater, which kissed the rim and went in, throwing the away team into raptures.

### Trento ends its long wait for a road win

It means Trento won its first road game after 24 successive defeats, leaving Slask Wroclaw as the solitary holder of the unwanted record, as the two teams were tied prior to the clash in Lithuania.

Ellis, who won player of the game honors after recording a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, was in seventh heaven after steering his team to a much-needed win.

"It was a play drawn up to get a three or going downhill. I went downhill, got to my right, just threw it up and it went in, so I'm happy with it,” Ellis said in a flash courtside interview after the final buzzer.

"We shared the ball very well, we ran well in transition and we found the open man every time, so this is why we had such a high-scoring game with many assists. We like to share the ball a lot.

"It was a big win for us just to get that zero off the board, to finally get a win. Now we'll push to next week and try to get a streak in the EuroCup, which would be really good.”

### Losing in one area, winning in another

Lietkabelis fired on all cylinders on offense early on, draining 5 of its opening 7 three-pointers, while it also dominated the boards in the first half (21-13). However, Trento thrived on a balanced offensive effort as six of its players ended in double figures in scoring, having shot 13-of-32 from three-point range. 

The home side, which sank 11-of-19, grabbed a staggering 45 boards (12 offensive) against 26 collected by the visitors, but Trento dished out 25 team assists which epitomized its free-flowing offense for the lion’s share of the game.

It was ground to a halt in the last few minutes as Lietkabelis found another gear before Ellis forced the final twist.

“I am really happy for the people who work at this club and this win has been a long time coming,” Trento’s head coach Paolo Galbiati told the post-game press conference. “We got lucky in the end after struggling on offense in the last few minutes of the game.”
