Last season, ratiopharm Ulm (7-5) and Frutti Extra Bursaspor (6-6) went through similar paths, bringing out their best basketball at the right time to provide some upsets in the 7DAYS EuroCup playoffs. Back in Round 4, Ulm edged Bursaspor 86-90 behind 17 points from Yago Dos Santos. Thomas Klepiesz added 15 while Sagaba Konate had 11 for Ulm, which buried 12-of-28 three-pointers (42.9% 3FG), dishing 22 assists and limiting turnovers to just 11. Onuralp Bitim led Bursaspor with 19 points. David Dudzinski added 16 while Zach Auguste had 15. Dos Santos and Klepeisz combined for 4-of-4 free throws in the final 5 seconds to win it down the stretch. Bursaspor (99) had a higher team PIR than Ulm (95) but it was not enough to win the game.

It was Ulm's first win against Bursaspor, too. Last season, Bursaspor downed Ulm twice in Regular Season action. It prevailed at home, 68-66, behind 20 points each from Allerik Freeman and Derek Needham. Bursaspor also beat Ulm on the road, 72-86, with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks from Kevarrius Hayes. Bursaspor clinched a playoffs spot with this win. 

Both teams went on to play the underdog role in the 2022 playoffs. Ulm defeated the top-seeded team, Joventut Badalona, 73-79, in the eighthfinals. Bursaspor became the ultimate road warrior, winning three games against Partizan NIS Belgrade, Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana and MoraBanc Andorra to reach the championship game. Both teams lost against the same opponent, Virtus Segafredo Bologna, which downed Ulm 83-77 in the quarterfinals and beat Bursaspor 80-67 in the championship game to claim its first EuroCup title. 

Fast forward to 2023, both teams are in a good position to reach the playoffs. Ulm features some of the most exciting young talents in the competition. Juan Nunez is confirming his great potential, averaging 6.4 points and 4.6 assists. Fedor Zugic, age 18, is also a Rising Star candidate while Dos Santos, age 23, is surprising experts and fans alike, averaging 12.4 points and 5.6 assists.

Bitim, age 23, has taken a step forwards this season to lead Bursaspor, averaging 17.5 points, 4.0 assists and a PIR of 17.4. Bitim, Needham and Dudzinski know what it takes to lead a team to the Championship Game, and hopes to use that extra experience to get a second win in Ulm in as many years. 

Both teams play aggressive, attractive, fun-to-watch basketball, and you can tell their young coaches have to do a lot with it. Anton Gavel, age 38, has managed to make the most of its young guards, finding a balance with more experienced players like Brandon Paul, Bruno Caboclo and Karim Jallow. Dusan Alimpijevic, age 36, was the 2021-22 EuroCup Coach of the Year and makes his team play with great focus, going point to point, possession by possession. 

Ulm arrives to this game after four wins in its last five EuroCup games, with Dos Santos leading the way. On the other hand, Bursaspor lost three of its last four games in the competition, allowing 95.0 points on average. It is a critical game not just in the battle to reach the playoffs in Group A, but also to get the home-court advantage in the eighthfinals. Expect an intense showdown at Ratiopharm Arena.

Joventut Badalona has brought [Vladimir Brodziansky](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/vladimir-brodziansky/010458/) back to Palau Olimpic de Badalona on a deal until the end of the season, half a year after he decided to leave the club. Brodziansky (2.11 meters, 28 years old) joins from Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, where he played in 5 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games this season, averaging 2.2 points and 1.4 rebounds in just under 10 minutes on the court. This will be his third season in the 7DAYS EuroCup with Joventut.

Brescia sent a message from the bottom of Group A

Three victories bridging the new year gave way to consecutive losses as [Germani Brescia fell to eighth place in advance of taking a 500-kilometer bus ride to face one of Group A's three leaders, Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/mincidelice-jl-bourg-en-bresse-germani-brescia/U2022/123/), on Tuesday.

The visitors had already lost to Bourg at home, so their prospects looked anything but rosy, as veteran forward [Kenny Gabriel](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/kenny-gabriel/005881/) explained:

"We had nothing to lose. We just wanted to come out and play strong for 40 minutes. If we win, we win, and if we lose, we lose."

Nothing to win mean everything to gain, though, and after pushing all the right buttons throughout the game, Brescia went home with a 66-74 victory, its third on the road this season, and new life in the playoffs race. 

The win coincided with U-BT Cluj-Napoca losing on Tuesday, giving Brescia more breathing room from the bottom of the standings. But the real takeaway was how the visitors handled Bourg, which has ridden high in Group A all season.

Mainly, Brescia did it with defense, obliterating Bourg on the boards with a 29-39 advantage, which included 4-10 on the offensive glass. Gabriel and [Christian Burns](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/christian-burns/005692/) had 7 rebounds each, but five of their teammates had at least 3 each.

Likewise, Brescia's defense held Bourg to 13-for-29 two-point shooting (44.8%) and 9-for-25 from downtown (36.0%), which taken together, was the hosts' second-worst field goal rate (40.7%) of the season. Bourg also shot themselves itself in the foot by making just 13 of 21 free throws (61.9%), their absolute worst of the campaign, while Brescia was a perfect 14-for-14 from the foul line, matching the highest perfect total in the EuroCup this season. As a result, Bourg's 66 points were its lowest total of the season and the first time it scored under 80 since November 1. 

Bourg fans, who kept up the faith all night, will be having nightmares about one corner of their home court. With Brescia up just 39-40 at the half, Gabriel went to that corner for 2 strikes right after the break, reestablishing the of Bourg always getting close but never taking the lead. Indeed, Bourg's last lead came on its first shot of the second quarter and changed back to Brescia's favor on the next shot made.

Still, Bourg retained a puncher's chance until [Aleksej Nikolic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/aleksej-nikolic/003703/) appeared in the same corner, got a brilliant cross-court pass from [Amadeo Della Valle](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/amedeo-della-valle/005884/), and made Brescia's final three-pointer of 10 with 35 seconds left to ice the outcome.

"I'm proud of my players. I'm a players’ coach," Brescia boss Alessandro Magro would say after the win. "I want to be demanding to them, but I trust them. Everybody, even in the bad moments. The key was to stay together and work. And tonight, we got a little joy for doing that."

The rest of us got a EuroLeague-like race in Group A. 

After Wednesday, when Joventut Badalona and Prometey Slobozhanske break their first-place tie, just two victories will separate the loser from eighth place with five games left to play. 

With a mix of veteran savvy from Gabriel, the floor-general duo of Nikolic and Della Valle, plus rebounding prowess despite no players taller than 2.06 meters, Brescia showed how it could be the team that takes advantage of a tight Group A.

Despite only rejoining 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys on January 16, Gediminas Orelik has already hit the ground running in this season's 7DAYS EuroCup. On Tuesday evening, Orelik played a key role as Lietkabelis grabbed an important road win at U-BT Cluj-Napoca, opening a two-game gap between the final playoff place and the bottom two.

Lietkabelis secured a 75-77 victory against Cluj, and for the second game in a row, Orelik finished with at least 20 points. After scoring 27 in a 92-88 win over one of the EuroCup's hottest teams, Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse, the 32-year-old followed that up with 20 points against Cluj.

Orelik made his second Lietkabelis debut on January 18 on the road at ratiopharm Ulm, just two days after sealing his return to the club, and he finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Yet, one week later, his performance against Bourg caused many to sit up and take note.

Since Orelik made his return to Lietkabelis, the team has gone 2-1, having lost to Ulm before beating Bourg and Cluj. But, it is telling that Orelik's increase in scoring has resulted in two crucial wins, as Lietkabelis improved to a 6-7 record.

Perhaps most importantly, though, Tuesday's win over Cluj meant that Lietkabelis is one step closer towards securing its place in the playoffs, with Cluj having dropped to 4-9 following its defeat.

7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys completed a regular-season sweep of U-BT Cluj-Napoca on Tuesday evening, winning 75-77 on the road at BTarena. As a result of this victory, Lietkabelis improved to 6-7 and Cluj dropped to 4-9, meaning there is now a two-game gap between eighth and ninth in Group A.

 

Gediminas Orelik led the way for Lietkabelis with 20 points, as he followed on from his 27-point performance in Round 12. Kristian Kullamae scored 13 points, including a free throw in the final second of the game, and Vytenis Lipkevicius added 12. For Cluj, Nemanja Gordic and Leonardo Meindl finished with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

The first quarter saw the momentum swing between the teams in the opening five minutes, but a 9-0 run by Cluj saw it open a 6-point lead, 14-8, with 4:11 remaining. Lietkabelis remained calm and chipped into the deficit, but an Emanuel Cate dunk made it a 6-point game once again, 19-13. After that, though, Lietkabelis went on a 6-0 run to close the quarter and tie the game at 19-19.

 

It was a similar story in the second quarter of play, as Cluj made a better start and was able to open a game-high 7-point advantage, 28-21, after the first three minutes. Lietkabelis responded, but Cluj twice reopened that same lead, 30-23 and 32-25. Then, Orelik scored 5 straight points to provide a spark for the visitors, 32-30. Lietkabelis levelled the score, 34-34 and 36-36, before Kullamae gave the Lithuanian team its first lead of the quarter with 36 seconds left. Gordic hit back with a triple, but Kullamae closed the first half with a triple of his own to ensure his side went into the break ahead, 39-41.

Lietkabelis went 1-for-12 from three-point territory in the first half, with Kullamae's late make in the second quarter being its only made three, yet the visitors saw 5 triples fall in the third quarter. This time, it was Lietkabelis that impressed early in the quarter, but Cluj tied it up at 48-48 with just under seven minutes to go. From there, though, Lietkabelis began to take control again. To close the quarter, Orelik continued his impressive night by scoring a sidestep three-pointer to make it a 10-point game, 54-64.

 

The scoring dried up somewhat in the fourth, and Cluj was unable to capitalize. In the opening 3:30, the hosts were only able to outscore Lietkabelis 6-4 to make it a 8-point ball game, 60-68. From there, however, Cluj went on a 5-0 run, before Kullamae and Lipkevicius hit a triple each to restore Lietkabelis's advantage, 65-74. In the final 1:51, though, Cluj scored 10 points to Lietkabelis's 2 as it got to within 1 point, 75-76. However, the win was sealed from the line for Lietkabelis, as Kullamae converted a free throw, 75-77.

Turk Telekom's record improved to 9-4 to become the third team from Group B, after Gran Canaria and Paris Basketball, to punch a playoff ticket. Axel Bouteille led the way with 18 points and 6 rebounds and Tony Taylor scored 14. Conor Morgan collected 17 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists for Slask.

Brescia also claimed the tiebreaker between the two after Bourg won their first meeting by just 2 points. Kenny Gabriel nailed 4 three-pointers for 19 points to lead Brescia and Amadeo Della Valle added 16,. Jordan Floyd was Bourg's sole double-digit scorer with 12 points.

For the hosts, Yoeli Childs had another double-double performance of 26 points plus 10 rebounds.

Game Center: Turk Telekom, Promitheas march into playoffs

 Rebounds key Turk Telekom's playoff-clinching win 

Turk Telekom did not have one of its finest games of the season, but got the job done against last-placed Slask Wroclaw. In a 76-63 win, key for Turk Telekom was the rebounding against a resilient visiting team.

Slask was not going away behind Conor Morgan who scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, but Turk Telekom did win the rebounding battle that propelled it to a victory. Small forward Berk Demir led that effort with a career-high 7 boards, while Nate Sistina and Axel Bouteille had 6 each.

The hosts not only outrebounded Slask 45-32, but also had a 15-7 advantage on the offensive glass. It was particularly telling considering Slask missed a total of 35 field goals in the game, but managed only 7 offensive rebounds.

With a control of the boards Turk Telekom managed to overcome its below-par offensive performance, and register a win that secured its place in the playoffs.

Last week, in Round 12, Veolia Towers Hamburg took a solid home win by matching its historic scoring record in the 7DAYS EuroCup. It was a [64-100](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/stats/db/U2022/120/#boxscore) solid decision at Slask Wroclaw that broke a four-game losing streak. It was the third time ever that Hamburg scored 100 points in the EuroCup, the two previous being during the 2021-22 season against Lietkabelis Panevezys in Round 4 of the regular season ([96-100](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/stats/db/U2021/33/#boxscore)) and Round 7 also of the regular season against Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar ([100-82](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/stats/db/U2021/62/#boxscore)). 

The German team did not score 100 points again during 2022, so 2023 started on a good note in Poland. In Round 13, Promitheas Patras visited the German city and it was clear from the start that it was going to be a high-scoring affair all over again.
