Promitheas Patras scored perhaps the most important victory in Round 17 of the 7DAYS EuroCup earning a three-point win over Paris Basketball to leapfrog them in the Group B standings. With both teams entering the round at 10-6, Promitheas not only moved a victory clear of their opponents, but also grabbed control of the fourth seed to position themselves for a home game in the eighthfinals.

[Anthony Cowan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/anthony-cowan/012003/) scored a career-best 38 points and put Promitheas up for good, knocking down a pull-up three to break a tie in the waning moments. While Cowan is averaging 11.5 points per game on the season overall, his outburst was not entirely surprising. His best game before the new year came against Paris and he has been one of the more efficient volume scorers in the EuroCup since the calendar turned over despite looking to defer in several of his team’s more comfortable victories over the last couple months.

The list below displays the EuroCup’s most efficient volume scorers since the start of 2023. Cowan’s Round 17 outburst has earned him a spot on this list alongside several of the players who figure to shape their team’s postseason hopes.

[Erick Green](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/erick-green/005159/) joined Buducnost VOLI Podgorica in January and hit the ground running, immediately solidifying himself as this season’s most consistent shot-maker. While he has shot the three well, it has been his 56% shooting in mid-range spots that has made him so difficult to guard.

Prometey Slobozhanske has won 10 games in a row and [D.J. Stephens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/dj-stephens/005982/)’s production offensively has had a lot to do with that. While Stephens is notorious for his otherworldly leaping ability, he’s in the middle of the best jump-shooting stretch of his career making him a unique matchup problem for opponents.

[Axel Bouteille](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/axel-bouteille/003840/) of Turk Telekom Ankara is one of the most well-established scorers in the EuroCup this season, so his presence here is unsurprising. In contrast, Brazilian forward [Bruno Caboclo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/bruno-caboclo/012096/) had little experience in Europe before joining ratiopharm Ulm just after the new year. With one of the longest wingspans in the sport at the moment, Caboclo has made the most of that, shooting a stellar 77% around the rim so far this season.

[James Palmer](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/james-palmer-jr-/011834/) and [Derek Needham](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/derek-needham/008945/) have both shot the ball well all season for their respective teams, Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse and Frutti Extra Bursaspor, while [Yogi Ferrell](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/yogi-ferrell/011281/) of Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana remains the EuroCup’s leading scorer—albeit by a narrow margin over [Sam Dekker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/sam-dekker/009672/) of the London Lions, who narrowly missed the cut here.

[Ante Tomic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/ante-tomic/002507/) and [Joel Parra](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/joel-parra/007464/) are the lone pair of teammates to crack this top 10. While one might assume there is some synergy to their performance offensively, they have played staggered stints more often than they have shared the floor this season. Joventut Badalona looks to maximize Tomic’s impact on the interior when he’s on the floor. While Parra has done much of his damage as a stretch big man this season, he also gets quite a few touches on the block when Tomic is on the bench.

With the postseason looming, it will be fascinating to see whether this group can continue to drive the success of their respective teams on the offensive end or if new stars rise in the single-elimination format.

With all 16 playoff teams already known, the last round of the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season comes down to deciding the matchups for the eighthfinals, the first of four do-or-die elimination rounds.

Round 18 seeding scenarios

While five of the final places in Group B are known, none are in Group A, which means that Round 18 will be ultimately decisive in determining the route for all teams to a title.

One of two current first-place teams, Prometey Slobozhanske in Group A or Gran Canaria in Group B, will become the No. 1 seed, thus hosting all its future games straight through to the EuroCup Final. Gran Canaria can lock up that privilege with a victory in Round 18, but having clinched first place in its group, is already guaranteed home-court advantage at least through the semifinals, should it reach that far.

First place in Group A will be decided in Round 18 between Prometey and Joventut Badalona, with the team finishing second only guaranteed home-court advantage until the quarterfinals. Among three teams in Group B that have secured home-court advantage in the eighthfinals, Turk Telekom Ankara and Hapoel Vegan Friendly Tel Aviv are battling this week over second place and an extra guaranteed home game should they win in the first elimination round. Promitheas Patras also has home-court advantage in the eighthfinals, but can finish no higher than third in Group B.

Lucas, the son of one of those Euroleague Basketball referees, Carlos Peruga, is among the 350 children a year in Spain who are diagnosed with acute myeloid or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer that attacks the immune system. Without personalized and intense immunology treatments, the disease makes victims extremely vulnerable to life-threatening infections and serious bleeding. 

The Golden Laces are a symbol of the efforts of the Spanish foundation Unoentrecienmil (1 in 100,000), which has brought the European-wide ALLtogether treatment program to Spain. ALLTogether establishes an advanced treatment protocol that aims to improve survival and quality of life for children and young adults with ALL.

 

Study groups in a total of 14 countries in Europe seek to improve on the current survival rates of 90% in children and 75% in young adults by combating under-treatment, but also refining protocols to prevent over-treatment, which brings similar risks for survival, secondary cancers and long-term side effects.

**Hello, Anthony. Congratulations on beating Paris Basketball. You had 38 points, a EuroCup season-high. How determined were you to play so well once you know that Joe Thomasson wasn't playing?** 

"First of all, it was a big one for us. Especially, we were able to get a home seed in the playoffs, which I don't think this club has done before, and it was really important for us to do that. And then obviously, I didn't know in the beginning that Joe wasn't going to play, and that obviously takes a lot from us. I know him just being just that extra person that can make plays for himself and for others. So I just tried to do a little bit extra this game and try to make sure I could get people involved, but also find my shot early on, and that's what I did."

"Coach asked me what play I wanted, and I just said 'clear it out.'"

**You buried the game-winning shot. Can you take us back to that play and the timeout that came before?** 

"Yeah, it wasn't really too much talking. Coach asked me what play I wanted, and I just said 'clear it out'... I have done that many times in my career, just being able to hit those final shots. That's where I honestly, I feel most comfortable with. A lot of people kind of shy away from those moments, but I feel very comfortable in those moments, to be able to hit that game-winning shot. So I was happy I was able to get one in our last game."

**Your role has increased during the season. Did you need an adjustment, or did it happen naturally?** 

"No, I think it definitely was an adjustment. I think at the beginning of the year, with our previous coaching staff, my role was really different. Like, it was very stagnant, in terms of how long you are going to play this game or what you were going to do in this game. And I think that in the second half of the year, I think I really started to get comfortable. And Coach put that confidence in me to have the ball in my hands, to be able to make plays that I know I can make. So yeah, I think that second half really has really helped me just being myself. It feels very natural."

**This is your first EuroCup season. How do you like to be a part of the competition and travel around Europe playing basketball?** 

"It's a great experience. It is one of my favorite experiences so far. I always go back and tell my family how excited I am to go to these cities. Obviously, being to London, being to Paris, those are two of the biggest and best cities to visit for tourists, so for me just to go over there and play there, not only play there, but also just experience their culture a little bit, it's huge for me and it's so exciting, not only for me but for my family. Me being the only professional basketball player to ever come out of my family, it's so nice for me to be able to tell them about different cities that I have been to and tell them my experience. So it's been a great experience."

**Your sister Axel, who plays college basketball, may be the next professional player in the Cowan family. Are you following each other's careers?** 

"We basically watch every one of our games. Sometimes I just got to stay up until 2 or 3 in the morning just to catch a game, and sometimes she just has to wake up really early to catch my game. So we all stay connected. We are a big basketball family, so whatever sacrifices that we got to make, we just go and always just try to watch and try to support each other." 

**How much of a mentor are you for her, how much of a role model throughout the years?** 

"I try to do my best, try to show by actions, especially when it comes to basketball. Just try to show my work ethic, show her about my mentality, little things like that. Not only my sister, but I also have little cousins that play and are also pretty good. And I just want to show them that it is possible to come out. You can play basketball. You can also play at a high level, also play for good money as well. You just got to stay focused and work hard at it every day."

**Speaking of good places to play, how do you like playing for Promitheas, with its great youth system and facilities?** 

"It's a great experience for me. I honestly didn't know too much about their youth program, but obviously now being in it, I see so much goodness coming out of it. We actually volunteer a couple of times to go to the youth facility to help the kids out and just show our faces. So like you said, it's a great program that is growing in Europe. And I'm happy to be a part of it. And definitely seeing all the kids, how many kids they actually have and how committed they are to growing that, it's definitely great to see." 

**You finish the regular season against Hapoel in Tel Aviv, in front of a great atmosphere. How much are you looking to this game, with a chance to get a better ranking in the standings?**

"It's definitely exciting for us. It is something that we want to do: to finish the regular season out strong. They beat us the first time here in Patras, so we are excited to go there, and we obviously know it's a great atmosphere there. And we don't shy away from that. We love those types of atmospheres to play in. So we are definitely excited." 

"Promitheas is a great program that is growing in Europe. And I'm happy to be a part of it."

**After last week's game, you said you were in a really good rhythm. What is the key to sustaining that rhythm and taking it to the playoffs?** 

"Just consistency every day. Do the same things you do every day. That's what I have been trying to focus on. Doing the same lift that I do every day, the same lift that I do during the week, taking the same shots that I take after practice, just keeping your body right, keeping your mentality right and keeping your confidence. I think the biggest thing is just staying confident and keep pushing forward." 

**The playoffs are around the corner. How much are you looking forward to that, considering the win-or-go-home format?** 

"It's definitely exciting. I think this might be the first playoff that Promitheas has actually been a part of, so it's definitely exciting for us in the program. And the format is bringing us back to March Madness so I am definitely looking forward to it. I think just the hungriest team will win. I feel like at this part of the season, everybody's tired. Everybody basically played everybody, so everybody knows their offense, knows how they play defense. So I think it just comes down to who's the hungriest team and who wants it the most. So I think we have to prove that to give us the best possible chance to go as far as we can."

The final round of the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season will decide the eighthfinals pairings. Although the 16 teams that will play in the next stage are known, only five teams are locked into their spots in the standings, meaning that nearly all of the Round 18 games have great meaning. Round 18 opens with three Tuesday contests and closes with seven more on Wednesday.

Visiting Promitheas is currently in fourth place and can only overtake Hapoel for third if it wins this game by a minimum of 18 points. The Lithuanian club is headed to the 7DAYS EuroCup Eightfinals for the second straight season and this time, Coach Nenad Canak's are in the running to host their first game. In the win-or-go-home format of the EuroCup knockout stages, teams need a cold-blooded go-to guy with the game on the line and Morris fits that description perfectly.

Morris pulled up for a long three over Frutti Extra Bursaspor’s Anthony Clemmons in the dying seconds of Wednesday's game to lift his team to an 88-85 win. And that shot was eerily similar to his game-winning three in Round 14 against Umana Reyer Venice.

Morris has 2 similiar game-winners this season

On both occasions, he didn't simply show up in crunch time. He was the team’s leader all night. Against Bursaspor, Morris had a quiet first half with just 4 points and 2 assists. After the visitors extended their lead to double figures early in the third quarter, he went off for 5 points and 2 assists in a 7-0 run and he never cooled down. Morris finished the game with 21 points and 7 assists for a PIR of 22.

That marked his best scoring effort since… Round 14 when he torched Reyer for a season-high 28 points on 6-for-7 shooting.

Morris has a few of the key attributes needed for a winning team. He is not only Lietkabelis's top scorer this season with 15.2 points per game, but he is a modest and humble leader.

Game News

After the game, Morris called it "a beautiful game of basketball" while praising his opponents: "It was a game between two good teams. Their record doesn’t speak to how good they are. They have really good players. They made some really tough shots."

When pushed to comment about his shooting, Morris said: "God is good. That’s all I can say."

Perhaps it's because Morris has been there before as the game-winner. Nevertheless, it was the comment of a true winner.

Morris alone will not be enough to win games in the next stages, but he is merely a key part of a deep team. He was only third on the team in minutes on Wednesday with the starting backcourt of Vytenis Lipkevicius (27:31) and Kristian Kullamae (27:24) both playing more than Morris (27:11). In all, 10 players featured for at least 10 minutes and that depth will be important.

But Morris's talent, leadership and ability to take over in big spots and willingness to shoot with the game are the line are all traits that could come in handy when the stakes are raised next month.
