Promitheas Patras picked up an important win against Buducnost VOLI Podgorica, an 81-72 triumph that edged it closer to the playoffs. Promitheas knocked down 11 triples on 44% three-point shooting and was efficient inside with 58.1% accuracy. However, it was the home team's defense that made the difference.

"We had good offense from defense", Promitheas Patras head coach Ioannis Christopoulos stated after the game.

The hosts forced 16 turnovers and held Buducnost to just 40.9% two-point shooting. The visitors did grab a massive 17 rebounds, compared to just 5 from Promitheas, but that did not make a difference in this contest.

It all resulted in Promitheas holding the opposition to 72 or fewer points for the third time in the last five games, all victories.

Lietkabelis Panevezys held off Mindicelice JL Bourg en Bresse to grab a 92-88 home win in Round 12. It matched a season-worst mark with 21 turnovers but still managed to win. What happened? 

Above all, Lietkabelis relied on its free throw accuracy to make the difference in the game. Lietkebalis finished the game 26-for-28 on free throws (92.9%). Those 26 free throws made is a new season-high and close to the club's best mark in the 7DAYS EuroCup. It previously made 28-of-33 free throws in a 93-78 home win against Partizan Belgrade on March 8, 2022.

Lietkabelis outrebounded Bourg 39-25 and managed to box out at an elite level and that was critical, too. It finished the game with 24 defensive rebounds and allowed Bourg to grab just 5 offensive boards. That means Lietkabelis pulled down 82.8% of all rebounds under its rim. Things were different at the other side of the floor: Lietkabelis had 15 offensive boards against Bourg's 20 defensive rebounds. The guests only grabbed 57.1% of all rebounds under their own basket.

ratiopharm Ulm bested Germani Brescia 72-85 on the road in Round 12 and in doing so earned the head-to-head tiebreak advantage between them. Superior three-point shooting made the difference.

Ulm finished the game shooting 16-of-34 on three-pointers (47.1%). Brandon Paul and Robin Christen each buried 4 three-pointers apiece. Christen keeps shooting the ball from downtown; he is 30-of-60 (50.0% 3FG) this season. Karim Jallow, Joshua Hawley and Yago Dos Santos also buried multiple three-pointers. On the other hand, Ulm was limited to just 6-of-21 shooting from downtown (28.6%).

Ulm made 7-of-9 three-pointers in the fourth quarter, allowing Coach Anton Gavel's team to take the road victory and the tiebreaker. 

The visitors were more efficient at sharing the ball, and that was the second key to their win. Ulm finished the game with 22 assists and just 11 turnovers. On the other hand, Brescia had more turnovers (16) than assists (14). Ulm's main ballhandlers, Dos Santos and Juan Nunez, combined for 14 assists and just 4 turnovers.

Arnoldas Kulboka shined again and Promitheas got back to winning ways after hitting 11 three-pointers in dismissing visiting Buducnost 81-72. Both teams now hold 7-5 records in Group B, but Promitheas holds the tiebreak advantage because Buducnost won their first game in overtime. In this one, the hosts took the lead for good early in the second quarter and Kulboka was hot the entire game, finishing with 30 points on 5-for-8 three-point shooting. Erick Green paced Buducnost with 16 points.

The win was overshadowed by Paris forward Juhann Begarin suffering an ankle injury in the third quarter. Trento lost its fourth straight game to fall to 2-10 - extending its road losing streak to 21 games dating back to November 2020.

Game Center: Paris advances; Prometey, Hamburg, Ulm win on the road

Veolia Towers Hamburg enjoyed a memorable 100-64 road win at Slask Wroclaw in Group B after thoroughly dominating every department of the game. Notably on the boards, Hamburg denied the home side a single offensive rebound in the opening three quarters.

Hamburg finished the one-sided clash with a whopping 40 rebounds - 10 of them offensive, while Slask managed 26 and all of their 5 offensive boards came in the last quarter when the game was already over as a contest.

Wroclaw head coach Anrej Urlep succinctly summed up his team’s lack of bite: "Hamburg played a great game. After a series of losses ,they showed how you have to compete for your club. On the other side we played a very poor game, completely without energy, especially in the second and third quarter."

Hamburg’s quick and efficient transition was epitomized by an impressive 30 assists, while Wroclaw only had 11. The visitors also shot 30-of-48 from inside the arc (62.5%) and 10-of-24 from three-point range (41.7%), while Slask was 20-of-40 for two points (50%) and a mere 4-of-15 from beyond the arc (26.7%).

Expectably, visiting head coach Benka Barloschky was delighted.

"Obviously very happy with the win, we were able to take care of the ball and that was a big problem the last game," he said. "Today we controlled that in a very good way, we rebounded the ball in a very good way and those were the two aspects that we wanted to do well in."

Hamburg overpowered Slask at both ends

Joventut Badalona moved into a three-way tie at the top of Group A with a 96-91 win over Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana on Wednesday night. With this victory, Joventut improved its record to 8-4, while Cedevita dropped to 2-10.

 

Joel Parra scored a team-high 23 points for Joventut, who had Simon Birgander add 18, Guillem Vives contribute 15 and Kyle Guy finish with 14. For Cedevita, Yogi Ferrell had a game-high 25 points, while Josh Adams scored 15. The visitors had four other players get into double figures: Edo Muric (13), Rok Radovic (12), Alen Omic (11) and Amar Alibegovic (10).

Cedevita began the game on fire, opening a 0-7 lead after three minutes of play, but Vives went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to help Joventut get back into the game three minutes later, 12-12. Yet, Radovic and Ferrell combined for five points to reestablish the visitors' advantage, 12-17, which they managed to hold onto for the remainder of the quarter, 19-21.

 

Vives gave Joventut a boost early in the second as he connected for his fourth triple of the night to nudge the hosts in front, 22-21. Alibegovic immediately hit back, but then Joventut found a way to remain in control, despite comeback attempts by Cedevita. As the first half drew to a close, Henry Ellenson saw a three-pointer fall to put Joventut seven points ahead, 46-39. It seemed as though the hosts were going to go into the break with that lead intact, 48-41, but a buzzer-beating Marko Jeremic triple gave Cedevita reason to be optimistic, 48-44.

The third quarter was a little slow to get going, but Cedevita managed to chip into the deficit and eventually flipped the script, 54-55, with 6:53 on the clock. However, that provided a response from Joventut, who regained its seven-point advantage two and a half minutes later, 64-57, before extending it thanks to a pair of made free throws by Guy, 66-57. Again, Joventut had a comfortable lead in the final seconds of the quarter, 70-63, but this time Adams scored a buzzer-beating shot from just inside the arc to reduce the gap to five points entering the last stanza.

 

Ferrell provided the assists for both of Jeremic and Adams's buzzer-beating shots, and he scored Cedevita's first 8 points to make the hosts sweat, 76-73. Adams and Omic kept putting points on the board after that, and it was Adams who scored a floater to make it 78-80 with 6:10 remaining. Cedevita's lead swelled to six points after a layup by Omic, 79-85, one minute later, but a 13-0 run by Joventut saw it regain control, 92-85, en route to 96-91 victory.

"We are happy. First of all, congratulations to our players. We are happy that we could win here and also take the head-to-head comparison. I think that in the second half, we stepped up defensively, had a couple of deflections, destroyed a couple of their plays. And offensively, we were hitting shots. We were moving the ball a little bit better and tried to play a little faster. Everybody contributed, and everybody had a plus in the plus-minus section, so we are happy about it.

"Congratulations to our players. We are extremely happy that we got this W here and also the head-to-head comparison. In the first half, we started kind of sloppy defensively and were not able to create any stops. In the second half, we got better. I think we were more aggressive trying to get through the screens and destroyed a couple of plays with deflections. And also, we found the way to move the ball and create shots for our shooters, and we were knocking them down. You need to hit shots if you want to be able to win an away game. So yes, we are extremely happy about this win. We have to continue and get ready for our domestic league."

"After the last games, obviously, we worked on our defensive impact and focused on our level of consistency, trying to protect the paint, trying to be able to help a player that was one-on-one, and I think we did a good job during the first half, for sure. But checking the stats for the entire game, we were able to protect our rim. For sure, we need to get better on defensive rebounds even if until now, we were one of the best teams. But players like Caboclo, who usually averages 3.6 \[offensive rebounds\], it is very tough to compete against this, especially if you are in rotation. 

"I think that the key of the game tonight was that Dos Santos played so aggressive, attacking one-on-one, and was really able to activate their shooters. They are the second-best team in the EuroCup for three-pointers made. And the key, especially in the fourth quarter, was that one because they were able to arrive and take shots. We did quite a good job in defensive transition, but against their drive and kick, Dos Santos was able to find and activate their shooters in the best way possible. They had 47% with 16 three-pointers made. In the fourth quarter, they hit 7 three-pointers. Obviously, it was tough. On the other side, the point was that their physicality really put us in trouble. Our side-to-side game was struggling against their way to disarm the screens, and that produced too many turnovers to be able to compete against a team like that."

Odiase got Brescia going with back-to-back jump hooks and then Gabriel followed a jumper with a three-pointer, prompting Ulm to call timeout at 11-3. Dos Santos, Joshua Hawley and Jallow each struck from downtown to give Ulm its first lead, 14-15. Della Valle and David Cournooh fueled a 10-0 run that Odiase capped with an alley-oop slam for a 24-15 Brescia lead early in the second quarter. Della Valle and Gabriel soon allowed the hosts to make it a double-digit game, 36-24. Juan Nunez, Caboclio and Christen got Ulm within 39-36 at halftime.

Della Valle kept pushing Brescia after the break, restoring a 45-38 lead. Nunez, Jallow and Christen each buried a three-pointer and then Dos Santos led Ulm to regain a 52-53 lead. Dos Santos got help from Hawley to make it 52-58, but Tomasso Laquintana buried a midcourt prayer to fix the score at 55-58 after 30 minutes. Christen insisted from beyond the arc, Paul added back-to-back triples and Jallow also struck from downtown to give Ulm a double-digit lead, 60-71, with under 6 minutes left. Odiase brought Brescia within 67-74 in the next-to-last minute. Paul put Ulm's victory on ice with a three-pointer.

Jeremiah Martin led Wroclaw with 17 points, Lukasz Kolenda scored 15 and Conor Morgan added 13, but the supporting cast contributed with preciously little for a disjointed home side. Hamburg improved to a 4-8 record and stayed eighth in Group B, while Wroclaw remained rooted to the bottom of the 10-team group at 1-11.

Having scraped an 87-83 home win in the reverse fixture, Hamburg was expected to be given a run for its money in Poland, especially in view of the fact that it had lost seven of its subsequent eight games.

It looked like Slask would make Hamburg work hard for a sweep as the hosts only trailed 20-21 at the end of the first quarter, but it got brushed aside by the German outfit, which dominated the game in every department.

After keeping the deficit down to 25-32 early in the second, Slask got steamrolled as Hamburg moved up two gears and extended its lead to 50-34 at halftime. But more importantly, Hamburg dominated the boards 22-9 in the opening two quarters, having grabbed 7 offensive rebounds while Wroclaw had none.

The third quarter produced more one-way traffic as Hamburg raced to a 79-43 lead with the home side looking completely devoid of ideas and energy, having still collected a grand total of 0 offensive rebounds by the end of the third quarter.

Wroclaw trimmed the deficit to under 30 points on several occasions in the fourth quarter, but Hamburg was in no mood to take its foot off the pedal and a strong finish saw the visitors win by their joint-biggest lead of the night.
