After a season in which Joventut Badalona's 7DAYS EuroCup run was stopped cold in the first elimination round, the Catalan club has regrouped and brought in a few new faces to try to be better prepared for the latter stages this time. Always a candidate to go all the way in the competition, Joventut will have to go all in from the get-go in another tough season.

### BACKCOURT

Joventut's backcourt will be led by one of the most experienced players in the EuroCup, [Pau Ribas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/pau-ribas/jug/). With him, several other faces return including [Pep Busquets](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/pep-busquets/006771/), [Andres Feliz](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/andres-feliz/011247/), [Albert Ventura](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/albert-ventura/001611/) and [Guillem Vives](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/guillem-vives/002361/), making it a deep and experienced group at guard that should run the team smoothly. Joining them will be EuroCup debutant [Kyle Guy](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/joventut-adds-shooting-ace-guy/), a sharpshooter coming directly from the United States with NBA experience under his belt. On the wings, the team has one of the hottest young talents in Europe, [Joel Parra](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/joel-parra/007464/), coming off his break-through season, teaming up with [Yannick Kraag](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/yannick-kraag/010161/), another youngster who will work to get more and more playing time.

### FRONTCOURT

In the paint, things are also well-defined for Joventut as superstar [Ante Tomic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/ante-tomic/002507/) and the club extended their relationship this summer for three more seasons. Tomic will be flanked by [Simon Birgander](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/simon-birgander/009682/), a homegrown talent who continues to grow his game from season to season. Two new additions will complete Joventut's roster for the 2022-23 season - [William Howard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/william-howard/002534/), who arrives from ASVEL with two EuroLeague seasons under his belt, and [Henry Ellenson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/joventut-signs-forward-ellenson/), a big man who has made waves in the Spanish League and is now set to make his EuroCup debut.

### PLAYER TO WATCH

[Andres Feliz](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/andres-feliz/011247/) has all the signs of becoming the latest Joventut-homegrown player who becomes a renowned pro. He made a name for himself at CB Prat, the club's affiliated team, and then went on to the pro level joining Joventut just last season. In his debut year in the EuroCup, Feliz averaged 5.3 points on 42.3% three-point shooting and 2.3 assists in 16 games and he helped Joventut reach the Spanish League semifinals. This will be an important year in Feliz's career as he will have to establish himself as a player who belongs at this level. True to his name, he had a happy summer with a [three-year extension](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/joventut-re-signs-playmaker-feliz/) with Joventut and now he will hope to have the same level of happiness in the season that is about to begin.

### OUTLOOK

Joventut is always a title contender in the EuroCup. Last season it had it all going for it until [ratiopharm Ulm](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/ratiopharm-ulm/roster/ulm/) ambushed the team in the single-game eighthfinals. [Coach Carles Duran](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/joventut-badalona/jov/duran-carles/?season=U2022) will surely remember that and will try to find the right chemistry from the start, even if a lot of that should already be in place having kept most of the group from last season. The key for Joventut will be to peak at the right time of the season and keep its cool when the money time comes. Having two of its first three games on the road, it will be a good test right out of the gate to see where the team stands in a season that could bring very good things to *Penya*.

As Reyer embarks on its fifth EuroCup campaign - and fourth in a row, [Coach Walter De Raffaele](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/umana-reyer-venice/vnc/de-raffaele-walter/) takes a largely rebuilt squad and aims to at least match the club’s best result to date – a quarterfinals appearance in 2020.

### BACKCOURT

Reyer has a deep and talented backcourt with many players who boast significant EuroLeague experience. [Jayson Granger](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/jayson-granger/003024/) will play in the EuroCup for the first time since the 2010-11 season and in that time, he has suited up for four teams over eight seasons in the EuroLeague. He has also overcome serious injuries and brings a hunger alongside his leadership and playmaking skills that could be critical for Reyer. [Andrea De Nicolao](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/andrea-de-nicolao/000968/) has been with the club since 2017 and serves as a classic playmaker off the bench. Combo-guard [Marco Spissu](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/marco-spissu/004381/) was second in the EuroLeague in three-point accuracy last season (52.9%) with UNICS Kazan and his versatility is another weapon Coach De Raffaele can make use of in matchups. Scoring machine [Allerik Freeman](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/allerik-freeman/010389/) averaged 19.6 points in nine EuroCup games last season before a mid-season move to CSKA Moscow and should resume assaulting EuroCup baskets from Round 1. [Riccardo Moraschini](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/riccardo-moraschini/000726/) was the club’s first signing in the offseason. The shooting guard spent the last three seasons in the EuroLeague with EA7 Emporio Armani Milan and will be a threat from deep for his new team. Small forward [Michael Bramos](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/michael-bramos/002906/) begins his eighth season in Venice and at age 35, still provides outstanding defense and shooting from the wings. [Jordan Parks](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/reyer-brings-in-forward-parks/), who will debut in the competition, balances Bramos at the ‘3’ spot.

### FRONTCOURT

Vocal leader [Jeff Brooks ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/jeff-brooks/004117/)returns for a second season with Reyer. He did not disappoint as the starting power forward last season and can be counted on to make a big impact again. He will share minutes with stretch-4 [Derek Willis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/derek-willis/009664/), who has made 48.4% of his threes in two previous EuroCup seasons. [Matteo Chillo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/reyer-adds-frontcourt-depth-with-chillo/), one of the few players on the roster without previous EuroCup experience, will also be in the mix at power forward. Together, Brooks, Willis and Chillo ensure that Reyer will always have the ability to crash the boards and open space on offense thanks to its power forwards. [Mitchell Watt](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/mitchell-watt/006332/) begins his sixth campaign with Reyer and has been among the best centers in the EuroCup in recent years. Watt will not have to carry as much weight inside thanks to two exciting signings. [Amedeo Tessitori](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/amedeo-tessitori/003759/) helped Virtus Segafredo Bologna win the EuroCup last season and may have a bigger role with Reyer. [Yankuba Sima](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/reyer-completes-roster-with-center-sima/?pageTitle=Homepage&historyUrl=/eurocup/), who arrives from the Spanish League, could be a difference-maker on the glass.

### PLAYER TO WATCH

[Yankuba Sima](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/reyer-completes-roster-with-center-sima/?pageTitle=Homepage&historyUrl=/eurocup/) is one of the few additions to Reyer this season who is untested at this level. However, the 26-year-old spent the past four seasons with BAXI Manresa in the Spanish League and always contributed on the glass. Last season he had eight games in which he collected at least 5 rebounds in less than 20 minutes and he averaged at least 9.1 rebounds prorated over 40 minutes n each of his seasons with Manresa. Rebounding is a skill that generally translates well from league to league and that bodes well for Sima and Reyer. Although he may not be a big-time scorer, Sima knows how to use his 2.11-meter frame in the paint and could emerge as a force inside for Reyer this season.

### OUTLOOK

Although question marks often surround teams that sign nine new players in one summer, Reyer is a different case. The new-look roster is full of a healthy mix of hungry veterans with high-level experience. The new faces include a reigning and another former EuroCup champion as well as four players who were in the EuroLeague last season. It may take time for Coach De Raffaele to get them all on the same page, but these are players willing to sacrifice numbers for success and the combination of depth and skill level will make Reyer a dangerous opponent all season long.

This will be a historic season for Umana Reyer Venice as it marks 150 years since its founding.

Komagum lands in London to make EuroCup debut

7DAYS EuroCup newcomer London Lions keeps building a new roster to compete in the 2022-23 season, and the new piece added to the puzzle was power forward Jonathan Komagum, the club announced on Wednesday evening. Komagum (2.06 meters, 23 years old) arrives directly from the NCAA. Last season, he played in Sacramento State University averaging 5.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 27 games.

Komagum started his career in 2016 at Southwark Pride in England, and then crossed the pond to play college ball. He was in Williston State College from 2018 to 2020, and after that he moved to University of Toledo and then Sacramento. He is also a member of the Ugandan national team.

The team found its chemistry and gained momentum in the second half of the season as [Coach Jurica Golemac](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/cedevita-olimpija-ljubljana/lju/golemac-jurica/) led his charges to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual runner-up [Frutti Extra Bursaspor](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/frutti-extra-bursaspor/roster/bbu/). Now, Cedevita has regrouped and will look to go a step further.

### BACKCOURT

Cedevita has kept a couple of its most important players in the backcourt: [Yogi Ferrell](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/yogi-ferrell/011281/) and [Zoran Dragic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/zoran-dragic/003514/). The duo combined for 26.0 points per game in the EuroCup last season and they remain a pillar for the new-look team. Three more guards arrived this summer: [Josh Adams](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/josh-adams/007872/), an electric point guard with EuroCup experience; [Lovro Gnjidic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/lovro-gnjidic/007641/), a young Croatian talent with a bright future; and [Marko Jeremic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/marko-jeremic/010551/), another veteran with EuroCup experience. [Edo Muric](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/edo-muric/003515/) also returns at forward for his fifth season with the team coming off one of his best seasons last year.

Cedevita's frontcourt has also been revamped for the new campaign. The biggest arrival may be EuroCup champ, [Amar Alibegovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/amar-alibegovic/004469/), who averaged 5.3 points and 2.4 boards with Virtus Segafredo Bologna last season and was a teammate of Adams's there the season before. Power forward [Jan Kosi](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/cedevita-signs-big-man-kosi/) arrived to make his debut in the EuroCup and he will be joined by [Karlo Matkovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/news/cedevita-adds-matkovic-to-the-mix/), who returns from being on loan for three seasons eager to make an impact now that he's back with the big club. These new faces will be greeted by some familiar ones, starting with center [Alen Omic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/alen-omic/004222/), who extended his contract this summer, [Marko Radovanovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/marko-radovanovic/005615/) and youngsters [Blaz Habot ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/blaz-habot/011299/)and [Sasa Ciani](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/sasa-ciani/011067/) to round out a roster that will be a perfect mixture of experience and youth.

### PLAYER TO WATCH

[Josh Adams](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/josh-adams/007872/) returns to the EuroCup and is expected to have a prominent role with Cedevita. Adams has been a go-to scorer at nearly all of his previous stops and has EuroCup experience; he played for Unicaja Malaga in 2019-20 and Virtus Bologna in 2020-21. Adams comes off a season in Australia with Tasmania JJ where he averaged 17.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 34 games. Now, he returns to Europe and the EuroCup with a team that was on the rise last season. Adams will have to share the ball with Ferrell and Dragic, but if this trio manages to find a way to help each other on the floor, Cedevita will be a force to be reckoned with.

### OUTLOOK

Cedevita's Group A is bursting with quality teams and unknown foes. The Slovenian team's campaign will start against the team that knocked it out last season, [Frutti Extra Bursaspor](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/frutti-extra-bursaspor/roster/bbu/), and from there it will face classic clubs [Joventut Badalona](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/joventut-badalona/roster/jov/), [ratiopharm Ulm](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/ratiopharm-ulm/roster/ulm/) and [Umana Reyer Venice](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/umana-reyer-venice/roster/vnc/) as well as teams that have yet to reveal their potential in the EuroCup such as [Prometey Slobozhanske](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/prometey-slobozhanske/roster/pmt/) and [U-BT Cluj-Napoca](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/u-bt-cluj-napoca/roster/clu/). More than half the roster from last season stayed together, so it will be Coach Golemac's job to make sure that the new faces find their chemistry quickly so that Cedevita can pick it up where it left off last season.

Ariel (1.92 meters, 27 years old) arrives from Hapoel Jerusalem with which he averaged 6.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game in the Israeli league last season. He brings EuroCup experience to the club, having appeared in 32 games over four seasons with Jerusalem and Maccabi Rishon Lezion. Ariel has also played for Hapoel Holon and Maccabi Ashdod in his career.

Hapoel adds veteran swingman Ariel

Some 70 referees – including four new referees – and 17 referee coaches attended the clinic. The annual preseason meeting is the ultimate primer for the referees in preparation for the 2022-23 season.

 

Over four action-packed days, the referees underwent preseason physicals and engaged in workshops, discussions and video reviews dealing with rules and the nuances of officiating games at the highest levels.

 

"This meeting follows our meetings with the head coaches from both of our competitions where we discussed how the game is evolving, and where we need to work in the coming season to ensure we can deliver the officiating that the clubs and fans deserve,” Richard Stokes, Euroleague Basketball’s Director of Officiating said.

 

Among the guest lecturers brought in to assist the referees in their preseason preparations were sports psychologist Mar Rovira, who led a mental skills development group; former EuroLeague head coach Neven Spahija, who lead an on-court session with players and discussed in-game communication; Gregory Rakas from Hawk-Eye regarding the replay system and Gianluca Mazzoncini on physical conditioning. The ABA League's president of the referees' commission Sasa Maricic and the commissioner for delegating referees Srdan Dozai, and the director of referees for Spain’s ACB, Jose Antonio Martin Bertran, were also in attendance.

 

"It also was great to have Neven Spahija with us to share his thoughts and observations and this can only improve our knowledge and understanding of what is expected of us," Stokes added. "We have another challenging season on the horizon with the best clubs in Europe across the EuroLeague and EuroCup and we must be ready to meet that challenge."

There were sessions and video reviews on many topics, including unsportsmanlike fouls, traveling calls, off-ball movement, post play, mechanics and new rules for the 2022-23 season, with former referee Todd Warnick on hand to lead several discussions.

 

"We think as fellow directors of referees, that all points of view from different competitions are important. We wanted to go to the clinic to experience it because we have some of our referees also in the Euroleague," Bertran said. "It was interesting to see that we coincided on many approaches.

 

"I think this kind of event is positive for everyone to learn, especially on a methodology level. Richard Stokes has been leading the referees’ department in the EuroLeague for some years now and he is close and transparent. I know him well and we have a good relationship. Being here has been useful to me to apply some things in the Spanish League. I want to thank the Euroleague for extending an invitation to us."

 

Sunday, the final day of the clinic, included sessions on the court at Arena Stozice, home of 7DAYS EuroCup side Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana. When the curtain closed on the weekend, the Euroleague Basketball Officials returned home better prepared to preside over what promises to be another exciting season in both the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and the EuroCup.

### Ulm snatches teenage talent Nunez

ratiopharm Ulm has long been a team where young players get the playing time they need to flourish. Will Clyburn, Daniel Theis, Killian Hayes and Robin Benzing are just some of the players who used their time at Ulm as a springboard to stardom and the latest name on that list could be Juan Nunez. The 18-year-old, who made his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut and was the MVP of the U20 European Championship last month, is now with Spain’s senior national team. He will get the keys to the Ulm attack this season and could have a young Ulm side making noise.

 

### Joventut makes long-term plans with Suurorg

Joventut Badalona not only sees itself as a EuroCup contender this season, but is constantly working on its future too. The signing of Estonian guard Kasper Suurorg to a four-year deal is proof of the latter. Though Suurorg may not even play for the club this season, which he is expected to begin with Joventut’s affiliated squad CB Prat, building a bank of young talents gives the team many options. Andres Feliz joined the club in February 2021 and after half a season with Prat, he was a rotation player with Joventut last season.  Could we see Suurorg with the big club before this season ends?

 

### Hamburg puts finishing touches on roster with Clark

Veolia Hamburg Towers ensured it will have a full roster for training camp (aside from Germany national team player Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann) after it signed small forward Marvin Clark and promptly declared him the final signing of the off-season. Coach Raoul Korner has an almost-entirely new-look squad at his disposal and a lengthy preseason is important for the players and coaching staff to build chemistry. Clark, who is entering his fourth pro season, has a do-it-all, team-first mentality and getting him on the floor now with his new teammates is a good sign for the new edition of the Towers.

The signings slowed down as teams began preseason training last week, but the moves that were made can teach us something about the teams involved.

The week in EuroCup signings

There is always a lot going on at this time of the year as players and coaches get to know each other and their new surroundings around sometimes grueling schedules that can include fitness workouts, two-a-days and learning new systems. Two of the first teams to get the ball rolling were last season’s runner-up, Frutti Extra Bursaspor, and quarterfinalist Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana.

"We are willing and motivated as is usually the case in the first week, but we'll try it to stay the same in the second and third ones,” Lakovic updated reporters. “We will be missing six players \[due to national team games\] that are important to our roster. A handful of teams from the 7DAYS EuroCup have hit the ground running with the start of preseason practices and training camps this week. 

Training camp begins for several teams

Playing in Group A, Bursaspor is set to face several of this season's top contenders during the regular season. Here are some of its most intriguing games to watch this season.

### Round 1: Tip-off test

The luck of the draw wanted Bursaspor to open its season at Stozice Arena, a place where it achieved one of its most thrilling wins last season. In the 2021-22 quarterfinals, Bursaspor escaped Stozice with an 83-85 win, but not before instant replay determined that Cedevita's Jacob Pullen's game-winning three-pointer came right after the buzzer. The atmosphere in the Slovenian capital should be rocking for this opening-week game and it will be a great test for Coach Dusan Alimpijevic and his men to see where they are at the start of the season.

### Round 2: First home game

Last season, Bursaspor went on a magical run to the EuroCup Finals. But it did it all on the road. Each of the three elimination games the team won, and the championship game it lost, were played away from Tofas Spor Salonu. After opening this season on the road, Bursaspor finally gets to play at home in Round 2 and the opponent is the best team from the regular season one year ago – Joventut Badalona. It should be a celebration of basketball in Bursa.

### Round 6: A Bourg-en-Bresse trip

Last season in Round 6, Bursaspor suffered its worst defeat since first entering the EuroCup when it visited Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse. The 95-65 drubbing gave Bourg a big confidence boost, while Bursaspor was left reeling. Even though the two teams eventually reversed their fortunes, with Bourg missing the playoffs and Bursaspor going on a Cinderella run, it will be interesting to see what this game in Bourg will bring for both teams.

### Round 16: Can Bitim repeat his heroics?

Bursaspor swept Umana Reyer Venice in the two games these teams played against each other last season. In the second of those two games, Bursaspor's 80-66 win, Onuralp Bitim collected 25 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists in 38 minutes on the floor. From there, he built on that performance and was one of the team's key players during its run to the EuroCup Championship Game. Reyer has stacked its roster ahead of this season and this Round 16 match could have huge playoff implications.

Frutti Extra Bursaspor overcame departures and injuries to stay competitive. Andrew Andrews and Onuralp Bitim had to do a lot with it.

All eyes this season will be on last year's 7DAYS EuroCup finalist, Frutti Extra Bursaspor, a team that went on a magical playoff run that was marked by its fearless approach and underdog mentality.
