Promitheas Patras used a first-quarter run and never look back on the way to a 76-89  road win at Dolomiti Energia Trento in the Group B opener for both teams.  


Trento led 13-9 before Promitheas scored the last 11 points of the first quarter, pushed the lead to 29-42 at halftime and kept control the rest of the way. Trevis Simpson led the winners with 22 points on near-perfect shooting. Joe Young followed with 20 and Arnoldas Kulboka combined 18 points with 11 rebounds for the winners. Trento got 14 points from Diego Flaccadori and 13 each from Luca Conti and Dew Crawford.

Trento ran transition well to a 13-9 start but the Promitheas trio of Simpson, Young and Kulboka took over from there for an 11-0 run to finish the first quarter ahead 13-20. Promitheas kept it going to 15-24 before Trento reeled it back a bit, but soon Simpson's shooting provided the first double-digit difference. Flaccadori tried to trim it but Promitheas still led 29-43 at the half. Scoring surged after halftime as Trento pulled within 38-47 but the run-and-gun pace was fine with the visitors, whose scoring trio maintained a 43-56 advantage. George Conditt and Simpson supplied the biggest lead yet at 45-62. Simpson added a four-point play 49-66 but despite Luca Conti answering, Vassilis Mouratos beat the third-quarter buzzer to keep Promitheas up 55-69. Trento kept scoring behind Conti and Crawford but couldn't stop the visitors as Mouratos and Young kept them ahead 68-81 midway through the quarter. Flaccadori cut it to 74-85 before Young and Simpson connected on another triple that put the difference out of reach.

Promitheas trio leads road win in Trento

Prometey Slobozhanske took advantage of aggressive and uptempo play and the resulting easy points to grab its historic first-ever win in the 7DAYS EuroCup.

Prometey beat 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys 82-71 thanks to 24 fastbreak points to just 2 for Lietkabelis. That was a mix of punishing turnovers and getting out in transition after long rebounds. Prometey swiped 14 steals among 18 Lietkabelis turnovers, but the hosts’ only had an 18-16 advantage on points off turnovers.

The other big difference in the boxscore came at the foul stripe where Prometey made 19 of 21 free throws (90.5%) and Lietkabelis converted just 13 of 19 for (68.4%).

Easy points carried Prometey to historic win

Prometey Slobozhanske made history in the opening round of the 7DAYS EuroCup season by defeating 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys for its first victory in the competition.

Gian Clavell led the way with 20 points as the Ukrainian side won 82-71 in the Group A game played in the club’s relocated home of Riga, Latvia. Caleb Agada added 16 points, 7 assists and 4 steals for Prometey while Zeljko Sakic paced Lietkabelis with 14 points.

After Prometey scored the first 4 points, Lietkabelis went on a 2-11 run. Prometey regained its focus and took initial control with a 13-2 surge spanning the first two quarters to lead 26-17. The Ukrainian side kept its aggressiveness and was leading 43-31 at halftime. Lietkabelis trimmed the gap to 50-49 but trailed 59-53 after 30 minutes. Prometey needed less than 2 minutes to get the advantage back to 12 points, 67-55. Lietkabelis twice was able to pull within 8 - the last time with just more than 5 minutes to play. But Prometey would not give up down the stretch.

"I think we played an excellent first half, especially offensively. We moved the ball well and found good solutions. Therefore, it was clear to us that Buducnost would increase the intensity, especially in defense. In the second half, it was a much more defensive game, very physical. Paris Basket never gave up in a game in which it trailed 12-0 after 7 minutes and 45-20 midway throughout the second quarter. The young visitors persevered and rallied for a valuable road win in the team’s first-ever 7DAYS EuroCup appearance.

Paris head coach Will Weaver looked pretty happy in the post-game press conference: “I’m a rookie here, I’m still learning,” he joked while waiting for questions from the journalists instead of giving his opening comments to the media. It was his first game in the competition, and so it was for his team, but that lack of experience was not a factor in the end.

“I’m proud of the resilience my players showed, especially competing against a team that is as well-coached and well-built as Turk Telekom,” Weaver said to start the press conference.

That concept, resilience, was also used by Kyle Allman, Paris’s top-scorer with 22 points, when questioned about what led his team to the victory.

“I think my teammates did a good job getting me the ball and we were resilient as we were in the first half,” he stressed.

Allman took charge in second half for Paris

Paris lived a nightmare in the first 7 minutes, missing every shot and turning the ball over 4 times. Turk Telekom took advantage to lead 21-10 at the end of the first quarter and raise the margin to double-digits, 45-20, after 15 minutes. But Paris was not willing to surrender

“We came back, we were down by 15 points, and we came back and pushed to get some stops and trusted each other,” Allman said.

Despite that bad early offensive display, Paris managed to find the right buttons to push and put on an unstoppable offensive performance thereafter. Being down 12-0 after the first 7 minutes, it’s quite remarkable that Paris reached 90 points to win in the end.

”I think that starting scoring 10 points in the first quarter, being scoreless for the first 7 minutes of the game, and from that point forward we made 90, that only comes if you have a very resilient group and a group that plays for each other,” Weaver concluded.

Resilience boosted Paris in its EuroCup debut

It was a historic night for Hapoel Tel Aviv as the team made its 7DAYS EuroCup debut. Its opponent, London Lions, also appeared in the competition for the first time. You could feel the excitement in the stands and the sold-out crowd and their great support played a big role in Hapoel's first EuroCup win. 

 

Hapoel defeated London 76-59 in front of over 3,000 fans at Shlomo Group Arena who were already jumping up and down long before tip-off. London struggled early and Hapoel used the fans' energy to go on a 12-1 opening run. 

"First of all, it was a great atmosphere throughout the game, our fans really gave us a boost and helped us out to climb that mountain of London. I am really happy for the win and excited for the club," Hapoel head coach Danny Franco said after the game. 

 

Circumstances helped Hapoel a little bit, as London lost star forward Sam Deker to a sprained ankle midway through the first quarter. Head coach Ryan Schmidt had to modify the game plan and shots were not falling in. Hapoel, pushed by its incredible crowd, relied on J'Covan Brown to make the difference early in the game. Brown struck three times from beyond the arc in his team's opening run and kept going through the game. 

At the end of the game, Brown led his team in scoring (19), assists (6) and PIR (20) and did not turn the ball over even once. In fact, Hapoel did a terrific job at taking care of the ball, getting 17 assists and just 6 turnovers. 

 

"I just wanted to be aggressive. This is my first EuroCup and I have to set the tone night in and night out. I know what it is about with me. I know what it is about for the organization and my teammates, and I am just ready," Brown said right after the game. "I'm here, some nights it's going to be my night, some nights it's not going to be, but most of the time, I am going to make sure I'm there."

Brown helps Hapoel to historic win

Coach Franco was extremely happy after the game but also wanted to be cautious, as the EuroCup season has just started and this win doesn't change the fact that Hapoel has to get used to a new level of competition. 

 

"There were a lot of expectations, a lot of concerns before the game but winning in the amazing atmosphere we had here tonight is something we dreamed of, " he said. "It is the first step of a very long journey and I am happy to start it on the right foot."

 

With that kind of fan support, Hapoel should be a very tough opponent in Tel Aviv. Before that, the team is set to test its strength on the road in Round 2 against Paris Basketball and Round 3 against Turk Telekom Ankara.
