Kyle Weems, Virtus: 'It's been a crazy, crazy ride'

I have been waiting for this moment for a long time. For a looong time. My EuroCup blog has been going on for a long time, since my first son was born. And I remember I talked about it in one of our first blogs, so it's just crazy to see it kind of come full circle. I was disappointed that year as Strasbourg dropped out of the EuroLeague down to the EuroCup in the last year of that style of competition. I thought we had a real chance. We were up by 8 points against Galatasaray and we only ended up winning that game, that first leg, by 4. So we knew going to their place in front of a sold-out Abdi Ipecki Arena, it was going to be very difficult. To lose that game was very disappointing, but I knew one day hopefully I would be able to come back to this competition and be able to compete at a high level. I felt like I did that in Tofas, but obviously, we didn't make the Top 16. And then I came here to Virtus with a big club, big roster, with a lot of good names and great quality in the roster. The pandemic happened, and then obviously last year we brought back that same roster, plus a couple more pieces, but then lost after being up 1-0 against Kazan.

But this year we had a better finish and finally went all the way. We are EuroCup champions. I am really, really grateful and very humbled. I'm just glad that I was able to stick to it and keep going. And the feeling is great. I have to say I am especially happy for our fans. I'm not sure if I have told you, but I have told a lot of reporters in the past: Virtus fans have a special place in my heart. When I lost my father to lung cancer a couple of years ago, they were super supportive - signs, messages on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook. They flooded my inbox, no matter how they could do it, and the support and the cheers are something that I can never pay them back. Playing in front of them, wearing a Virtus jersey, I always want to play to the best of my ability, play to the best of my energy, enthusiasm, because they are truly great fans.

They really love the game. They love Virtus and the city of Bologna. So I just try to reciprocate that and give them the same energy that they give us. And I think yesterday it was a huge factor for us in some key moments in the game. Bursaspor is a great team. There were a couple of times they fought back within 9. Then they fought back within 5, 6, 7, and each time we made a big play, the crowd was crazy and enormous. Belinelli hit a three to go up 11 and Milos hit another three to go up 14 at different points of the game. They deserved that and they were great. I'm glad that we were able to give them that type of game in front of a packed house.

Of course, we celebrated a lot in the locker room. It was great, honestly, and the reason why I feel like it was great is for guys that a lot of people might think I'm crazy. But it was great for guys like Michele Ruzzier, Marco Ceron, who come to practice every single day and they don't get a lot of action in time in the game, but each and every day they come and they are ready and prepared. The same with Nico Mannion, who has had a tough year. They practice hard and play hard whenever they come into the game. Their attitude is great. I have the utmost respect for those guys.

And then on the flip side, you've got guys like Ekpe Udoh, who has been at the top level in Europe and also in the NBA. Him going down with a season-ending injury was really tough for our team, but a lot of people also forget how tough it is for him as an individual. It hurt me to see him go down because I know the type of player and person he is, but whenever he came back from rehabbing in the States, his energy and his enthusiasm and his leadership have been felt every single day. And I'm just so happy that he and Awudu Abass, who also had a season-ending injury, were able to feel that energy, feel that passion, because they were important, even though they physically couldn't be out there with us, their talks, their leadership, the way that they communicate with us and communicate with the coaching staff, it was very, very pivotal in the way that we kind of turned our season around in mid-March.

We were one of the favorites since the start of the season and ended up going all the way. It is great, strictly because the city was expecting it, the club was expecting it. Our coaching staff was kind of expecting it, too, but you got to put it all together. You have to have a little bit of luck. You have to have good health - and when I say good health, I mean good health at the right time. You can't be healthy all year and then deal with injuries at the wrong time. You've got to be healthy at the right time. I think we all continued to buy into what Coach Sergio was selling and that was share the ball, be physical, play good defense and play for one another, be selfless. And I felt like we did that. It's good to kind of overcome that pressure, if you want to call it pressure, because a lot of people in this competition, especially in the do-or-die games, they failed, so I'm just happy that we were able to come out on top.

It's been a crazy, crazy ride. And now, I am going back to the EuroLeague. I have always felt like, in a sense, that I have kind of belonged, but I know that God has his own way of working things out. And also I believe in the basketball gods. I know I might sound crazy, but the basketball gods reward you in a weird and mysterious way when you put the work in and you just keep going and keep going, hitting the nail on the head. That's what I have been trying to do these last few years, ever since I left Strasbourg - and it's a blessing.

But it's not about me. I'm excited about the future of our club because they deserve to be there, in the EuroLeague. They have wanted to be there since I have been here. Now that we finally kind of punched that ticket and made it official, I'm really excited for them and I'm excited for our coaching staff and our teammates for all the hard work that has been put in.

Days after Virtus Segafredo Bologna lifted the 7DAYS EuroCup trophy, Kyle Weems touches base to remember the experience and also look ahead to the future. A future in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

Virtus won its first-ever 7DAYS EuroCup title, but it wasn't easy. Despite Virtus leading almost all the way, Frutti Extra Bursaspor got within 64-59 early in the fourth quarter. In the final 7 minutes, however, Birtus outhustled its opponent, led by EuroCup MVP Mam Jaiteh and Kyle Weems.

Once Bursaspor made it a five-point game, Virtus head coach Sergio Scariolo called timeout and one of the key plays of the game took place. Marco Belinelli missed from downtown, Kevin Hervey grabbed a long rebound and shot the ball straight away, but missed. Belinelli gave Virtus a third chance to score and Hervey downed a critical jumper. After an offensive rebound allowed Jaiteh to score around the basket, Shengelia soon added a big basket off the baseline for a 70-60 Virtus lead. 

As always in the second part of the season, Bursaspor fought until the end, staying within 76-67 with 3 minutes left. Metin Turen missed a wide-open three-point shot, Jaiteh grabbed the rebound and soon got the ball back from Milos Teodosic to throw it down. Virtus needed stops in key moments and Weems provided them with a couple of critical blocks on Andrew Andrews. The second one, a wild chase-down block off the glass, allowed Teodosic to score at the other end and seal the outcome, 80-67. In fact, neither team scored after that, so the outcome was completely sealed.

Jaiteh, Weems made the difference

Jaiteh finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Weems had 13 points, 4 rebounds and a career-high 4 blocks, which also tied for the second-most ever in the finals. Until now, Weems had 29 blocks in 79 EuroCup career games, but just like Jaiteh, he stepped up at the right time.        

"We had some ups and downs in the game, but we always respected them and we knew that until the clock stopped, we couldn't relax," Jaiteh said. "So we're very proud. Very happy. I have no words; I'm just truly happy. I hope this feeling lasts forever."

Trento, Forray agree on new deal

Dolomiti Energia Trento and captain [Toto Forray](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/toto-forray/006382/) will continue together for a couple more seasons as they agreed to extend their relationship until the end of the 2023-24 season. Forray (1.87 meters, 26 years old) arrived to Trento in February of 2011 and has played there since. He has defended the Trento jersey in six 7DAYS EuroCup editions since 2015, with a total 95 games, averaging 7.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals. "It makes me happy that I can continue to defend this club and this jersey" Forray said. "I feel like I am from Trento. I am proud to have stayed here for so long and this is fantastic news for both me and my family."

A strong start and an even better finish paved the way for Virtus Segafredo Bologna to claim the 2021-22 7DAYS EuroCup crown and earn the right to be in the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. 

Telling numbers: Virtus started and finished strong 

Virtus used an outstanding first quarter to take a double-digit lead, 25-12, and never trailed after that. Virtus made 5 of 10 two-pointers (50%) and 3 of 5 three-pointers (60%) in the opening 10 minutes while holding Bursaspor to much lower percentages (33.3% 2FG, 28.6% 3FG). Virtus also outrebounded its opponent 11-5, including 5 offensive boards, and collected 5 steals. Bursaspor finished the first quarter with 7 turnovers and no steals. All that led to a remarkable difference in the teams' numbers; Virtus had a PIR of 37 after one quarter and Bursaspor only had a PIR of 1. 

Marko Belinelli made the difference with 7 unanswered points late in the first quarter. Bursaspor did not leave the game and rallied to within 64-59 early in the fourth quarter. In the end, Virtus's hustle and deeper bench paid off. The visitors finished the game with 13 bench points - 10 from John Holland and a triple by Omer Utku Al. Three Virtus bench players - Jakarr Sampson, Belinelli and Kevin Hervey - combined for 27 points. 

The difference in turnovers was not that great, but what they did with them was. Bursaspor finished the game with 14 turnovers and Virtus with 10. However, Bursaspor only had 2 steals and Virtus had 8. The home team turned Bursaspor's 14 turnovers into 24 points and the visitors cashed in only 7 points from Virtus's turnovers. Nine different players combined for 22 Virtus assists led by Alessandro Pajola with 6. No Bursaspor player had more than 3 assists and the team compiled just 11. 

Virtus outrebounded Bursaspor by 44-30, including 17 offensive rebounds. The hosts scored 17 second-chance points, which were 11 more than Bursaspor. The visitors only grabbed 56.4% of the rebounds under their own rim. On the other side of the floor, Virtus pulled down 77.1% of all boards under its basket.

Teodosic was the man of the moment from right after tip-off, when he fired in his first shot of the night from three-point distance, until Virtus had wrapped its arms around the trophy with an 80-67 victory over visiting Frutti Extra Bursaspor of Turkey.

Teodosic would score 8 of his floor-high 21 points in that first quarter, which Virtus won 25-12, a margin that ended up mirroring the final score. Bursaspor matched the hosts through the final three quarters but could not overcome the hot start of Virtus. Teodosic made sure of that with 8 more points in the third quarter, including a pair of three-pointers in less than a minute that ran the difference to a high of 58-43. When Bursaspor drew within 75-67 with 3 minutes left to play, Teodosic returned to the court to dish his third and last assist and make his fourth two-pointer in as many tries, which proved to be the game's final basket.

The 35-year-old former Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion and MVP will now have a chance to return to Europe's premier club competition for the first time since 2017. It will be the first time Virtus plays in the EuroLeague since 2008.

"Last year when we lost the semifinal, that hurt us. And this season, in the beginning, we were struggling with COVID and a lot of injuries. I believe this is the first game in the season that we have everyone healthy," Teodosic said after the victory. "So, we really improved during the season and in the crucial moments of the season we started playing really as a team, defensively and offensively. That Danny \[Hackett\] and Toko \[Shengelia\] came to the team also helped us a lot. So, I am really proud of the last two-and-a-half or three years here. We were improving every year. I believe this is the result of the improvement of the last three years since I came, and I hope that we are going to keep improving."

The EuroCup Finals MVP honor is another in a long list of accolades for Teodosic, most of them in the EuroLeague, where he was a six-time All-EuroLeague selection and named to that competition's All-Decade Team for 2010 to 2020. With Virtus, he has been the EuroCup Regular Season MVP in each of the last two seasons, and in both cases was a member of the All-EuroCup First Team. Last season, he led Virtus to its first Italian League title in 20 years.

The three-year quest for glory of Virtus Segafredo Bologna ended in the ultimate triumph on Wednesday with the leader of that quest, veteran point guard Milos Teodosic, voted by attending media as the MVP of the 7DAYS EuroCup Final before an adoring home crowd in Basket City.

Virtus became the first Italian team to ever win the competition, lifted its sixth continental trophy and earned the right to play in the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. Virtus finished the season on a seven-game winning streak. Milos Teodosic led the winners with 21 points to earn EuroCup Finals MVP honors. Kyle Weems and Mam Jaiteh each scored 13, Marco Belinelli had 12 and Jakarr Sampson 11 for Virtus. Jaiteh, the EuroCup MVP, added 10 rebounds and Weems blocked 4 shots. David Dudzinski paced Bursaspor with 14 points, Onuralp Bitim scored 12 and Derek Needham and Kevarrius Hayes each had 11 for the visitors.

### Teodosic time!

There is a reason Milos Teodosic is a former EuroLeague champion, a EuroLeague MVP and a EuroCup Regular Season MVP. He comes up big when his team needs him. He buries back-to-back three-pointers to make it 58-43 with 3 minutes to go in the third quarter. He leads all scorers with 19 points. No Bursaspor player has even half as many points. 

### Pattern continues into the third quarter

The main pattern of the first half continued into the third quarter as Virtus asserted its dominance early, despite the best efforts of Kevarrius Hayes, and matched its biggest lead of the game. 50-35, with a Toko Shengelia basket in the paint. And then Bursaspor fought back with 8 straight points, half of which came from Derek Needham. Before the last 2 points, Needham free throws, Virtus called timeout to regroup. Will it work?

### There’s no quit in Bursaspor

Facing a double-digit deficit, Bursaspor has continued to show the grit and spirit that saw it win three consecutive road games to reach the final. ### Teodosic gets ankle treatment

Milos Teodosic came out on first with a triple for his team’s first points. He added 5 more points and an assist to Kyle Weems for a triple that made it 14-7 midway through the opening quarter. However, he also took an early spill and came up limping. Though Teodosic played through it, As soon as he was taken off at the 3:06 mark of the first quarter, he went behind his team’s bench to get his ankle examined and taped up by the team’s medical staff.

### Bursaspor faces early foul trouble

Bursaspor faced its first crisis of the game in less than 3 minutes, despite leading 5-7. The visitors were called for 5 fouls in the first 2:46 of game time, meaning that Virtus was already in the bonus. Derek Needham and Kevarrius Hayes were each responsible for 2 of them and Coach Dusan Alimpijevic has little choice other than to sit them. John Holland came in for the former and Metin Turen for the latter.

### The Bursaspor fans are making noise, too

While the Bursaspor fans are clearly outnumbered, they are singing at the top of their voices too and are certain to be heard all night long. They are situated in the corner of the arena not far from the team's bench, so the players will feel their support throughout the game, too.

### A blackout in the stands!

The Virtus fans are planning a blackout in the stands tonight. That is to say, the fans are all coming in black shirts to support the team, which is affectionately known as The Black V, due to the large black V in the club's logo. You can already see that fans decked in black filling the arena and we can start to get a feeling for the electric atmosphere expected when the opening tip goes up at this sold-out arena. Among the fans to cheer on Virtus is the club's women's team, which was greatly warmly by the fans.

The Bursaspor social media team came in for a closeup of the EuroCup trophy. As you can see, the players are ignoring it for now and shooting, but the fact that it is in the background is true for all 24 players tonight. Every one of them dreams to lift it at the end of the game, but only half of them will get that chance.

### Bursaspor players get their shots in

First on, first off. Derek Needham finished his pre-game shooting routine and left the court without stopping by the EuroCup trophy, which is on display on a podium at center court. Needham sets the tone for his team in many ways, including fine sportsmanship. Before heading back to the locker room, Needham thanks the Virtus ballboys who were rebounding for him.  A classy gesture from a classy player. 

### Virtus is in the building!

By the time you read these lines, players from both teams are warming up. Derek Needham was the first Bursaspor player on the floor to get his shots in and Amedao Tessitori had the honors for Virtus. The home team was all business on its way into the building, as seen from the footage below.

Virtus combines championship experience as a club – two EuroLeague titles, three more European trophies and 24 Italian league and cup titles – with experience up and down the roster. It all starts with the veteran Milos Teodosic, the straw who stirs the drink at Virtus and was joined in midseason by another former EuroLeague champion in Daniel Hackett and the only previous EuroCup winner on either team, Tornike Shengalia. Add in established stars like Marco Belinelli and Kyle Weems, those coming into their primes like Mam Jaiteh and Isaia Cordinier, and young bucks like Alessandro Pajola, Kevin Hervey and Nico Mannion, and the reigning World Cup champion head coach, Sergio Scariolo, has plenty of weapons to choose from.

By contrast, Bursaspor is as unexpected as a finalist can be. The club is all of eight years old and has spent just the last three in Turkey's first division. Its sole trophy was Turkey's second-division title and its only player with any continental final experience, John Holland, lost last season's EuroCup title series while playing for UNICS Kazan. The entire roster except for forwards Metin Turen and the injured Birkan Batuk is new since last season, in the middle of which Coach Dusan Alimpijevic arrived. Bursaspor rallied behind guards Derrick Needham and Andrew Andrews, forwards Holland and Onuralp Bitim, and big men Turen, Dave Dudzinski and Kevarrius Hayes to reach the playoffs and knock off three higher-seeded teams on the road.

Two earlier meetings between them offer some clues going into this game. In the season opener, Hervey led seven double-digit Virtus scorers with 18 points in a strong 83-101 road win in Bursa. Virtus won their rematch in early March, too, but this one was closer, 98-94, despite being in Bologna. Jaiteh put up 23 points that night while Teodosic dished 13 assists, but the re-born Andrews exploded for 37 points for Bursaspor.

Twenty teams started the 2021-22 7DAYS EuroCup season last November and Virtus Segafredo Bologna was the last one standing! Virtus defeated Frutti Extra Bursaspor 80-67 at home in Basket City to become the newest EuroCup champion and a new addition to the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season.

### The 7DAYS EuroCup Final is around the corner!

We are minutes away from tip-off here at Virtus Segafredo Bologna! The two finalists followed different paths, full of adversity, to get here. Virtus lost two players, Ekpe Udoh and Awudu Abass, before the season even started. A series of injuries slowed the team down, but Coach Sergio Scariolo's team got healthy and the right time and added two elite players, Toko Shengelia and Daniel Hackett, right before the transfer deadline.

Frutti Extra Bursaspor lost four players - three departures and an injury to Tolga Gecim, and only added one player, John Holland, who has proven to be the perfect fit. He has been the team's vocal leader and given Bursaspor a spark, allowing him to reach the EuroCup Finals for the second consecutive season. It is not something you see often. In fact, only one player, Edu Hernandez-Sonseca, played consecutive EuroCup Finals before Holland. Coach Dusan Alimpijevic had to redistribute the team's roles, giving Andrew Andrews and Onuralp Bitim more responsibility. Both players responded effectively and Bursaspor became the road warrior in these playoffs.

 

Don't miss the pre-game show because Virtus fans are preparing something special: a giant poster will drop from the top of the stands to salute the team in one of the most important games in club history. It is the first sellout crowd ever in this arena and around 250 Bursaspor fans are expected to support their team, too.

### Like father, like son 

Virtus Segafredo Bologna has a generational opportunity to win the 7DAYS EuroCup title. And speaking of generations, two of its players have the chance to follow their fathers' footsteps and win a continental title if Virtus beats visiting Frutti Extra Bursaspor on Wednesday night. 

Amar Aligebovic is in his second season with Virtus. His father, Teo Alibegovic, had a long basketball career that took him to the United States, Italy, Germany, Spain and Greece. He led ALBA Berlin to the 1994-95 Korac title, the first trophy for any German team in European competitions. Alibegovic averaged 22.7 points and 5.6 rebounds in 16 games that season and led ALBA to the trophy in the second leg of the two-way finals. After an 87-87 tie against Olimpia Milan in the first game, Alibegovic had 34 points on 11-for-14 two-point and 3-for-3 three-point shooting plus 11 rebounds to lead ALBA past Milan 85-79 in the finale to win the title. 

"He always tries to mentor me and, of course, he doesn't put any pressure on me. He always keeps it real: if I didn't play good, he tells me. But if I did, he also tells me. He is always able to look at the situation like he was a third party," Amar Alibegovic said about his father. "Having my dad always close to me and him practically playing the same position I do, it really helped me a lot. He taught me a lot of things that I know now, and I definitely wouldn't be here without his teaching."

Alibegovic is not the only Virtus player with a successful father in European competitions. Nico Mannion definitely belongs to that group. 

Mannion's father is Pace Mannion, who played professional basketball for the better part of two decades before retiring in 2002. Mannion spent most of his career in Italy and played for Pallacanestro Cantu for four seasons, scoring 3,011 points in 139 Italian League games (21.7 ppg.). He helped Cantu win the 1990-91 Korac Cup title by playing a stellar role in the two-way finals against Real Madrid. Mannion scored 33 points while hitting 6 of 10 three-pointers to lead Cantu to a 77-79 road victory in the first leg. At home in Cantu, Mannion did even better, firing in 8 of 11 three-pointers for 35 points in his team's 95-93 overtime second-leg victory for the title. 

Nicolo Mannion and Amar Alibegovic are now ready to become second-generation continental winners. After all, basketball is in their genes. 

### Basket City awaits a champion!

The day has finally arrived! Virtus Segafredo Bologna and Frutti Extra Bursaspor are meeting each other in the 7DAYS EuroCup Final on Wednesday evening, and you can feel the excitement in Basket City. Virtus can become Italy's first EuroCup champion and thereby earn its return to the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague for the first time since 2008. The game is already sold out.

Meanwhile, Bursaspor team manager Cem Civan confirms that there will be 20 giant screens in different areas in Bursa for fans of tonight's visiting team to watch the game together. Bursaspor has become a phenomenon in its home city and among Turkish basketball fans in general. Back in 2016, Bursaspor was in the Turkish third division and didn't reach the first until 2019. But in just two years, Bursaspor has made it to the 7DAYS EuroCup Final and the Turkish League playoffs. Civan can also make history in his own way: if Bursaspor wins, he would be the first team manager to win the EuroCup with different teams, as he helped Galatasaray Istanbul lift the trophy in 2016.

Back to Virtus, everything seems to be in place before the big game. Mam Jaiteh was all smiles after being named the competition's MVP on Monday, and the general vibe among his teammates was really positive. Virtus has also clinched first place in the Italian League regular season for the first time in 21 years. Since mid-March, the club has won 15 of its last 16 official games.

It is also a comeback of sorts for the "Vu Nere" – the club's nickname due to the black V in its logo. When current owner Massimo Zanetti arrived to the team in 2016, Virtus was in the Italian second division. Six years later, the team is the reigning Italian League champion and sits one win away from lifting the EuroCup trophy.

### Bursaspor is ready, too!

The stage is set for the 7DAYS EuroCup Final after Frutti Extra Bursaspor practiced on Tuesday evening, 24 hours before tipoff. The visitors came with an entourage of sponsors, executives and Turkish media, which gives you a feeling of how important this game is not just for the club, but for Turkish basketball. They all took a family picture along with the players and club's staff at center court to remember the historical moment.

Of course, everyone keeps talking about Bursaspor's new nickname, The Pitbulls, which helped the team play with the right mentality. John Holland put the words out there in what already has become an iconic halftime interview during the quarterfinals, and the whole team followed.

We talked to Dave Dudzinski, who was all smiles after practice. He has some reasons to be happy. Dudzinski played a major role in Bursaspor's amazing run, and he recently re-signed his contract for two more years. He confirms that the buzz about "The Pitbulls" is real and Bursaspor wants to show it in the final.

"We talk about it, and it is something we identify with. For sure, John \[Holland\] is kind of the microphone of the team. He is saying what the mood of the team is right now," he told us. "We really feel like underdogs, pitbulls. We are ready to fight against anyone in every moment."

Bursaspor knows that a whole city will be pushing for them, and its sellout crowds in recent home games prove it.

"It's insane," Dudzinski said. "The energy that we have in the city right now is really something special. It is something that maybe a lot of players never get to experience in their careers. I am really thankful to the fans in Bursa and the city of Bursa. We are trying to get this one for them. There will be big screens in the city showing the game, and there will be a lot of people there. We hope we can put on a show for them."

### Virtus is prepped for the battle!

Virtus Segafredo Bologna was the first team to practice the day before the EuroCup Final. Several players – Kyle Weems, Daniel Hackett and especially Toko Shengelia – stayed on the court longer to put up some extra shots up before the big game against Frutti Extra Bursaspor on Wednesday night.

Shengelia has a golden chance to win a second EuroCup title 12 years after his first one with Valencia Basket in 2010. No player has gone so long between titles. Simas Jasaitis is the longest until now, eight years between winning with Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius in 2005 and Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar in 2013.

Incidentally, that final between Lokomotiv and Bilbao Basket in 2013 was the last single-game final in EuroCup history until this one. The format returns after nine years. There were two-way series to the title from 2014 to 2016, then best-of-three finals to decide a champion from 2017 to 2021.

During the media availability for Virtus, when asked about his All-EuroCup First Team guard and team leader Milos Teodosic, head coach Sergio Scariolo had a funny comment.

"If I could think that Milos wouldn't be ready, I better not go to the game!" he laughed. "Milos will be ready, and we know the opponent will try to do their best, legally of course, to slow him down... but he is used to it."

### Bologna welcomes another European final!

The game 20 teams dreamed of playing in will tip off at 20:30 CET on Wednesday with Virtus Segafredo Bologna and Frutti Extra Bursaspor battling for glory. Bologna has already witnessed Virtus reaching the peak of European basketball, but also the biggest disappointment a team can have at the highest level.

Bologna was home to the 1966 EuroLeague Championship Game. The semifinals and finals were played in a Final Four format in Bologna and Milan. Simmenthal Olimpia Milan played both of its games in Bologna, including a 77-72 victory over Slavia Prague 77-72 in the championship game.

More than 35 years later, another EuroLeague final was played in Bologna, this time in a best-of-five playoff format. Virtus, then known as Kinder Bologna, faced Tau Ceramica Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. After the teams split the first four games, Bologna was the site for Game 5 and saw Virtus prevail 82-74. Antoine Rigaudeau led the way with 18 points and Manu Ginobili and Marko Jaric each added 16 to get the party started in Bologna.

A year later, the 2002 EuroLeague Final Four took place in Bologna. Kinder and Panathinaikos Athens survived their respective semifinal showdowns and Virtus fans were eager to celebrate back-to-back EuroLeague titles, but the Greens rallied from a 14-point deficit to register an 83-89 win and claim the EuroLeague crown. Ibrahim Kutluay led Panathinaikos with 22 points and Dejan Bodiroga added 21 and earned the 2002 Final Four MVP honor.
