Skydiving, jiu-jitsu, and F1; the many interests of Cluj’s Mitch Creek

The arrival of [Mitch Creek](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/mitchell-creek/013927/) in Romania for the start of this season with U-BT Cluj-Napoca says a lot about the Australian. The 33-year-old showed up at the airport with luggage that included a parachute and helmet for one of his many interests - skydiving. In fact, the BKT EuroCup rookie considers himself many things besides a professional basketball player.

Creek says he has skydived about 350 times since doing it for the first time at age 14 as a birthday present from his mother.

“There have been a lot of really amazing places I've jumped and landed: at air shows, on beaches, in people's backyards. We jumped out of hot air balloons for people’s birthdays, out of helicopters. We’ve jumped out of war planes. We've jumped out of pretty much anything and I'm not opposed to jumping off anything,” Creek said with a thick Australian accent.

But skydiving for Creek is not what many people might imagine.

“I don't do it for the adrenaline. I don't get adrenaline out of it in any way,” he explained. “You go into the day understanding that you've learned a skill or a hobby. You’ve trained yourself to be as risk-averse as possible, just like driving a car, just like using a sharp knife to cut vegetables. You have to train these skills.”

Just like some people are scared to chop onions really fast, others are trained to do so almost as second nature. And skydiving is similar to that for Creek, who sees it as a release.

“I just escape and I'm by myself. I have no worries. I have no care for anything else in the world. It's about me, myself, and no one else in the world can do or say anything in that moment that can alter my state of self-awareness, self-love and self-respect. And I think that's why it's so calming.”

The Horsham native says the skydiving can be traced back to his life as a country kid in Victoria in southeastern Australia, taking off with his bike at 7:30 in the morning and not coming back until 17:00.

“You had this sense of freedom, and you had this sense of adventure. And that just stayed with me throughout my whole life so far,” said Creek, who moved away from home at age 16 to attend the famed Australian Institute of Sport.

“I had to mature at a much younger age, even though probably many would contemplate that I didn't mature until an older age. And maybe I'm still a kid in a lot of ways. I think the sense of adventure and curiosity never stopped.”

Creek said he balances his life as an athlete, businessman and partner and his social life and family. And that’s what makes him himself.

"All those different people are under the one person. I'm not a professional basketballer. I don't identify as a professional basketballer. I'm Mitch Creek. I'm a person. And that person has a lot of different characters because of my different personalities.”

Thanks to his ultra-curious personality, Creek gets an itch just about every six months to try something new as a hobby.

Last season while playing in Canada, he was struggling to find a place to practice boxing - one of his past urges - so he gave jiu-jitsu a try.

“It was one of the most terrifying things I've ever done. To get choked out and to be bent in places that your body's not normally meant to bend in by little tiny humans - males, females, young, old, it didn't matter who they were or what they look like - I was getting my ass kicked.”

Creek thought he was pretty capable of defending himself in terms of a confrontation. And he wanted to be able to protect his daughter, his partner and her son. But he learned otherwise quickly.

“I thought I was capable until I went into a jiu-jitsu class and I was getting submitted by a 60-year-old man who was a third of my size and weight and just basically bullied me like a child.”

Creek has already found a place in Cluj where he can continue his jiu-jitsu training.

Creek is also a passionate motorcycle rider and has even raced some in Australia. He also likes vintage American cars and has built a couple cars. He says he is currently building a 1984 Chevrolet C10.

Speaking of cars and racing, Creek is a big fan of Formula One. And that is putting it mildly.

"I don't miss a single training, practice session or qualifying or race, and I haven't for probably the last 10 years,” he said.

And Creek has made sure people around him don’t tell him the results of anything F1.

“I've had previous teammates that have spoiled it for me and I've had to warn them very carefully,” he said. “We don't talk about Formula One until you ask the question: Hey, have you seen qualifying? Did you see practice? Have you seen the sprint race? And if the answer is no, you shut the hell up. That's the last question about it.”

If he can’t watch any session or race live, he will watch it on demand within the next 24 hours - of course, not knowing what happened.

What about his next hobby itch?

It’s art. Drawing to be more specific.

“Drawing is actually one of the things that I always liked when I was young. But I obviously got out of it as an adult a bit more and now I've kind of picked it up again,” Creek said.

Basketball is an opportunity to express myself on the court. To express myself in a way that allows others to say, damn, that guy has a lot of fun and he plays the game the right way. He's not just a basketballer. There's more to him.

All this talk about skydiving, jiu-jitsu, motorcycles, Formula One and now drawing leaves one to wonder what basketball actually means to Creek.

"It's shifted over the years,” he said. “Basketball used to be an identity because I thought that's what I wanted to be. I thought that being a famous basketballer, being successful, going out and having drinks and meeting the girls and going to cool places, that's what it was all about. It couldn't have been further from the truth.

“There are times when it's a lot of fun. It is really cool to have and be in those situations. But as I've matured over the years, my life has shifted. And for me now, basketball is an opportunity to express myself on the court. To express myself in a way that allows others to say, damn, that guy has a lot of fun and he plays the game the right way. He's not just a basketballer. There's more to him. And it makes people question the narrative of what is a basketballer, what is a professional athlete.”

Creek now wants to be an inspiration to others.

“I just want people to realize that anything is achievable. Through constant effort and intent on breaking down your goals and trying to chip away at them slowly, anything is achievable. I'm proof of that. So if I can inspire the next generation just to give it a crack and to dream outlandishly large, then believe in it at all costs. It'll be worth it.”

In the mean time, Creek will be watching the F1 in between drawing, practicing jiu-jitsu and oh, yeah, playing basketball.

Lukosiunas previously spent four seasons with Zalgiris Kaunas, between 2019 and 2023, and has appeared in 65 EuroLeague games with the Lithuanian powerhouse. In London, he reunites with Coach Tautvydas Sabonis who served as Zalgiris assistant during the time Lukosiunas played there.

He began his career in the Rytas Vilnius youth system and played for several other Lithuanian clubs before joining Zalgiris in 2019. He helped Zalgiris win three national championships and four Lithuanian Cups in his time there.

Khadeen Carrington was named MVP of the game after scoring 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Roman Sorkin dominated early for Maccabi, which led 22-17 after 10 minutes and 42-35 at halftime. Carrington tied it for Jerusalem in the third quarter and some big shots by Roy Paretsky helped stretch the lead to 56-61 entering the fourth quarter. Jerusalem kept the pressure on and an Anthony Lamb triple with 2:08 remaining made it 70-81, seemingly wrapping up the win. Maccabi caught fire with the next 9 points and had the ball down 3 with 8.5 seconds remaining, but Carrington stole the ball from Jimmy Clark and made 2 free throws to ice the game.

"The guys that we brought in are buying in," Carrington said in crediting his new teammates. "We want to win championships. We don’t just want to win games, we want championships."

Reigning EuroCup MVP Jared Harper tallied 20 points and 4 assists for Jerusalem, Anthony Lamb added 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Justin Smith contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds. Roman Sorkin stood out with 22 points for Maccabi and Clark, Oshae Brissett and John DiBartolomeo scored 12 each.

Maccabi was without Uros Trifunovic, who is recovering from a sprained ankle, and Lonnie Walker, who rested because of back pain. Clifford Omoruyi was also left off the roster due to the restrictions on foreign players.

Benitez sparked the team early with 8 quick points, helping Manresa build a 21-11 lead. They maintained a 40-35 advantage at halftime, and after Joventut tied the game at 48-48, a 7-0 run gave Coach Diego Ocampo's squad a 55-48 edge heading into the final quarter. Joventut mounted a comeback, narrowing the gap to 81-79 with just 22 seconds remaining. Dani Perez split a pair of free throws, Sam Dekker missed a three-point attempt, and Perez secured the win from the foul line. Manresa will kick off its first-ever BKT EuroCup campaign with an away match against Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana on October 1.

EuroCup debutant Trey Drechsel inspiring other players with YouTube videos

[Lietkabelis Panevezys](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/lietkabelis-panevezys/lkb/) didn't just sign a versatile shooting guard this summer who can light it up from the outside. In [Trey Drechsel](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/trey-drechsel/013865/), the Lithuanian club added a player who has built up a strong following with a YouTube channel that helps shine a light on what it’s like to be a professional basketball player in Europe. 

Drechsel will be making his BKT EuroCup debut this season and the 29-year-old American is thrilled to live in a country where the people are so excited and knowledgeable about the game.

"I came here because it's a basketball country. Somewhere where basketball is like a religion. So I’m super excited about it. You can already tell everybody here actually knows basketball at a high level,” Drechsel, who played the last two seasons in Portugal, told David Hein.

Then again, it was in Portugal where Drechsel not only became a leading player with SL Benfica but also became a bit of a YouTube star. He regularly chronicled his time in the country and his channel – TreyDrechsel5 – grew from about 5,000 subscribers to more than 60,000 after his second season there. 

“I'm just really trying to provide tools and value and real insight that other athletes can apply. So not only am I sharing my journey and the cultural experiences of living overseas and what goes into being a professional, but what truly being a high-level professional looks like,” said Drechsel, who has built out his brand which he calls Atypical.

His now wife – then girlfriend – had been doing a vlog about exploring Serbia and experiencing the culture in Serbia during their time there in 2020-21, and Drechsel would appear in the episodes.

“She started a YouTube channel, and in Serbia if you talk about their country at all, your channel blows up,” Drechsel said.

Her channel was getting a lot of momentum in three months or so and he started enjoying the process of making the videos and then also having the videos to look back on.

Drechsel started his video blog before the 2021-22 season in Poland, doing so while he was back in the United States recovering from a broken hand. The videos recalled his process of coming back from that and preparing for his third season as a professional in Europe.

“I was going through a lot like just like every athlete does when they get injured,” he said. “I knew a lot of other athletes are experiencing something like this so I just wanted to start documenting this journey so that other athletes can feel less alone.”

There was another reason, too.

“I've always been a big family guy. I wanted my future kids to be able to see some of the stuff that I went through while I was playing overseas, to see that their dad was a dog overseas.”

Drechsel says he can’t really watch the really raw videos from his time back in Poland with Stal Ostrow Wielkopolski. Things got a bit better during the 2022-23 season in Germany at EWE Baskets Oldenburg, but they really took off when he got to Benfica in Portugal. In January 2024 he hired an editor from Portugal. He later added a Turkish graphic designer living in France, who Drechsel calls his "solver" in terms of logo and website design and leveling up the brand as a whole.

The third member of the team is kind of a YouTube consultant – kind of like a brand consultant. The person was living in Athens but is actually from the same area in Washington where Drechsel is from. The company, Audience Labs, supports a bunch of other creators in the space such as EuroLeague stars [Elijah Bryant](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/elijah-bryant/009846/) and [Shaq McKissic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/shaquielle-mckissic/007853/).

Drechsel’s episodes are a mix of storytelling about things he experiences on and off the court as well as assistance for other players, looking at his routines on the court and in the weight room.

He says doing the videos also benefit him in a couple of ways. The first of which is reflection on his own life.

“I film and then look at the rough cut from the last couple of days and think, 'What was I getting out of that time?' It makes me just live a lot more intentional because I have to be intentional about the stories I want to tell and the life I want to live,” he said.

Drechsel also talked about him watching the game footage helps him level up his film study.

“I watch over my games way more because I'm telling the story of each game. So I have to watch the film, see what I learned, see what I did good, see what I did bad. So I'm a big proponent of this. I think this has absolutely helped my basketball career, just in terms of thinking more retrospectively and objectively.”

When Drechsel started the vlog in Poland there were not many other athletes documenting their journeys. But he is excited about seeing more players doing so on various media channels now, such as McKissic, Bryant, [Chima Moneke](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/chima-moneke/012201/) and [Shane Larkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/shane-larkin/007200/).

After spending two seasons in Portugal, Drechsel is still trying to get a feel for how much he can film at his new team in Lithuania. Another change coming up soon is that Drechsel’s wife is expecting the couple’s first child. It’s unclear how fatherhood will change his videos and storylines.

“That's a hill that we're going to have to climb once we get there because I have no idea. I wish I knew how my son is going to change my life,” he said.

One change for sure is that Drechsel will be collaborating with the EuroCup this season through video content.

EuroCup fans will get a chance to experience what makes Drechsel’s videos so good – the vulnerability that shines through in them.

“That is one of the things I got, why my channel has been successful and why I got over it early is accepting that vulnerability and not really caring what people are going to think or say and just being open about your struggles, your good moments, your bad moments. I think that's the most relatable aspect,” he said.

The videos Drechsel said also allow him to look at things from a different perspective.

“It gives me a way to step away from basketball, a way to level myself up as a well-rounded human being…  You can take a step back from the day-to-day intensity of practices and games and big wins, big losses. It helps you float above the wave rather than getting trapped underneath the wave. And it's just so free mentally to have a creative outlet and to kind of inspire people along the way.”

Turk Telekom Ankara brought back the anchor of its frontline with center Kyle Alexander returning to the team for one more season. Alexander has shined in the BKT EuroCup last season, leading the competition in blocks with 2.2, ranking third in rebounds with 6.8 per game.

Alexander (2.08 meters, 28 years old) shined in the 2024-25 BKT EuroCup campaign, leading the competition in blocks with 2.2 per game and ranking third in rebounds with 6.8 per game.

Alexander also averaged 9.6 points as he helped the team from the Turkish capital reach the EuroCup Quarterfinals where Turk Telekom lost against Alexander's former team, eventual champion Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv.

Over the past two seasons, the only two he has competed in the EuroCup, Alexander has accumulated 263 rebounds and 69 blocks, more than any other player in the competition over that span.

Alexander arrived to the Turk Telekom a summer ago from Hapoel, where he averaged 10.6 points, a fifth-best 7.4 rebounds and a third-best 1.5 blocks in the 2023-24 EuroCup season.

The big man started his professional career with the Miami Heat in the NBA and also played for Sioux Falls of the G-League, as well as Baloncesto Fuenlabrada and Valencia Basket in Spain before joining Hapoel in the summer of 2023. He made his EuroLeague debut with Valencia in the 2022-23 season and averaged 5.7 points and 3.1 rebounds.

As a member of the Canadian national team, Alexander won a bronze medal at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

These are very different teams and either of them using their strengths properly could beat the opponent. Team 2022 has three point guards in it: Teodosic, Cummings and Needham. The biggest question would be who would guard Shorts, the superstar with the best winning record in competition history. Needham is a tough defender who could limit Shorts better than Teodosic or Cummings.

On the other hand, Team 2024 has a size advantage with two versatile forwards in Mike and Williams alongside old-school center Olaseni. Jaiteh had a career-best season in 2022 as the EuroCup MVP and his matchup against Olaseni would be critical. Cummings would have to guard either Williams or Mike, and that is where Team 2024 has a size advantage. At the same time, Team 2022 has very good finishers around the rim in Blossomgame and Jaiteh, who had a full season playing with Teodosic at Virtus.

So who wins this one? First, it depends on their star point guards' inspiration. Teodosic can be just unstoppable on a good day and is arguably the most talented pass-first playmaker in decades. Shorts is able to score and create for others, a relentless source of good decisions at point guard. Given that Team 2024 has big forwards and Shorts is a player who makes the most out of any small advantage his squad can find, I would put my money on that. What's your take?

[Aris Thessaloniki](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/aris-thessaloniki/roster/ari/) big man [Georgios Tanoulis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/georgios-tanoulis/010631/) has been ruled out long-term after suffering a serious knee injury on Wednesday night. The 23-year-old center was hurt in the fourth quarter of the friendly game against TFT Skopje. On Thursday he underwent an MRI, which revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial meniscus, and medial collateral ligament (MCL).

Tanoulis is scheduled to undergo surgery, after which he will begin his rehabilitation program. A native of Thessaloniki, Tanoulis joined [Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/roster/oly/) on a long-term deal in 2023 and has spent most of the past two seasons away on loan.
