Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana took an important step forward in the standings by downing Virtius Segafredo Arena 74-86 on the road on Wednesday. 

Pullen leads Cedevita to big win in Bologna, 74-86

The result left both teams with 8-7 records in Group B. While Cedevita won its fifth straight game, Virtus registered its third home loss of the season. Jacob Pullen led the winners with 20 points, Jaka Blazic added 18, Edo Muric scored 14 and Yogi Ferrell and Zoran Dragic each had 11 for Cedevita. Toko Shengelia led Virtus with 14 points in his debut. Mam Jaiteh and Kyle Weems each added 11 for the hosts. Jaiteh collected 13 rebounds for a double-double.

Meisner fuels Hamburg to 92-86 triumph over Slask

Hamburg nearly wasted a 21-point third-quarter lead but held on to improve to 6-8 in Group A. Lukas Meisner led the way with career-highs of 23 points, 5 three-pointers, 12 rebounds and 3 steals for Hamburg, which hit a club-record 17 triples. Justus Hollatz tallied 14 points and 6 assists, Zach Brown scored 13, Maik Kotsar had 12 points and Robin Christen finished with 11. Slask fell to 3-11 despite Travis Trice’s 29 points - 21 of them coming in the second half - and 10 assists. Aleksander Dziewa collected 21 points and Kerem Kanter contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

Dziewa scored the first points of the game from the foul line for the visitors and Hollatz got Hamburg’s first basket on a layup. Travis Trice followed with a three-pointer for Slask and Kanter had a three-point play but Maxi DiLeo, Hollatz and Brown all drained triples and Hamburg was up 13-11. Slask kept close and was leading 17-19 after Lukasz Kolenda’s three-pointer. Hamburg absolutely dominated the rebound situation with 9 offensive rebounds in the first quarter, including 2 which led to triples from Meisner and Brown for a 23-19 lead after 10 minutes.

 

Slask had problems scoring early in the second quarter and Hamburg started pulling away with Caleb Homesley hitting from deep and Kotsar converting 4 free throws for a 32-19 lead. Kodi Justice finally hit a three-pointer to snap a 4-minute scoreless drought. Meisner answered from deep and DiLeo free throws increased the lead to 37-22. Slask could not get enough stops to get into the game and another Homesley three-pointer pushed the margin to 42-26. Hamburg’s offense dried up for more than 2 minutes and Slask pulled within 42-30. The hosts woke up again just in time from the outside with Brown hitting one three-pointer and Meisner making two more triples. The margin was 51-33 at the break.

Seth Hinrichs opened the second half with a three-pointer as the home side’s lead grew to 21 points. Slask put together some stops and Dziewa scored 6 points and Trice and Jakub Karolak both knocked down triples in a 2-16 run to trim the deficit to 56-49. A Kanter three-pointer got the visitors as close as 60-54 and the score was 64-58 after 30 minutes.

 

Hamburg found the start to the fourth that it needed with Christen sandwiching three-pointers around a Meisner dunk and the advantage was 72-58. Trice would not let Slask go down without a fight with two three-pointers to get back within 76-70. Christen hit another three-pointer and Meisner’s dunk made it 81-70, but the guests continued to fight; Kanter and Dziewa converted three-point plays to trim the margin to 81-78. Hollatz came up with a three-pointer only to be matched by Trice to make it 86-83. Hamburg executed better down the stretch with DiLeo converting a layup and after Dziewa’s missed three-pointer, Meisner delivered a dagger triple for a 91-83 advantage with 24 seconds to play.

Valencia Basket rallied from double-digit leads in each half to finally hold off visiting Umana Reyer Venice by 86-80 and solidify its second place in Group B. Valencia improved to 11-4, tied on victories with first-place Gran Canaria, while Reyer fell to 7-7 and sixth place despite leading for most of the game.

Klemen Prepelic led Valencia with 19 points and Jasiel Rivero added 15. Jaime Pradilla and Martin Hermannsson, who hit key late three-pointers, had 11 each. And Valencia captain Bojan Dubljevic was everywhere at the end, finishing with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Reyer's Jordan Theodore saw his career highs of 25 points and 28 performance index rating spoiled with the ending. Michael Bramos followed him with 14 points, while Mitchell Watt had 12 and Austin Day 10.

A pair of triples by Bramos had Reyer ahead 2-6 until Xabi Lopez-Arostegui matched him from deep to make it 5-6. Otherwise, both defenses dominated early. Theodore combined free throws, a dish to Watt for a dunk and 2 driving layups to suddenly push Reyer ahead 7-14. Dublejvic's hook shot got Valencia unstuck but Jordan scored and Bramos hit from deep again to force the hosts to take a timeout at 9-19. Julyan Stone joined Bramos with another triple as the visitors finished the first quarter up 11-22.

Prepelic's triple started the new quarter but Daye's 5 straight points gave Reyer a high lead of 14-27. Louis Labeyrie and Jaime Pradilla calmed Valencia with inside baskets before Jordan Morgan restored Reyer's double-digit lead. Prepelic struck again from deep and assisted Dubljevic on another triple to get the hosts within 24-31. When Pradilla added a dunk, the visitors needed a timeout. Pradilla sandwiched a pair of inside baskets around another by Reyer's Martynas Echodas to make it 30-33. Theodore returned to steal and score before hitting from downtown at 30-38. Prepelic traded baskets with Bramos and Watt to keep Valencia within 37-42 at the half.

Pradilla and Theodore got the second half scoring started before Dubjevic's put-back and free throw got Valencia as close as 42-44. Reyer's Victor Sanders drilled from the corner and fed Watt for a slam. Theodore and Watt soon scored in transition as the lead returned to double-digits, 43-53. Rivero and Lopez-Arostegui started Valencia back again and Hermannsson soon joined the effort with a triple at 53-55. Theodore answered him but Lopez-Arostegui did the same for the hosts. Stefano Tonut, Rivero, Watt and Hermannsson all traded buckets while Mike Tobey of Valencia equalled Daye's free throws at 62-64. Tobey then tipped in a missed triple on the buzzer to leave a 64-64 tie after 30 minutes. 

Tobey's triple to open the fourth quarter gave Valencia its first lead all night, but Daye matched him at 67-67. Tonut's second-chance drive-and-one restored Reyer's lead, but Rivero's put-back kept Valencia within a point. Tonut scored at 69-72 with under 7 minutes left as back-to-back blocks by Watt frustrated Valencia. So did a second-chance triple by Bramos at 70-75, but then Guillem Ferrando hit a near-identical shot for Valencia. Only a free throw from Prepelic fell in the next 2 minutes, leaving a 74-75 scoreboard. Echodas's technical foul let Prepelic tie 75-75 with less than 3 minutes left. Hermannsson was left alone to drill a triple for Valencia but Theodore answered in kind at 78-78. When Theodore missed his next try, Watt rebounded and scored, but Hermannsson blasted again from the corner at 81-80 with 1:27 left. Dubljevic added a layup with 13 seconds left that was good enough to guarantee the victory once Theodore missed at the other end, leaving the victory in Valencia.

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica clinched its place in the knock-out round by downing Promitheas Patras 90-77 in Group B on Wednesday. 

Buducnost beats Promitheas, 90-77, storms into knock-out rounds 

Buducnost improved to 9-6 in the standings while Promitheas dropped to 4-11. Petar Popovic led six Buducnost scorers in double figures with 15 points. Vladimir Micov added 12, D.J. Seeley and Willie Reed each scored 11 and Justin Cobbs and Zoran Nikolic had 10 apiece for Buducnost. Jerai Grant led Promitheas with 23 points, Trevis Simpson added 13 and Mihajlo Andric 11.

Simpson got Promitheas going with a baseline jumper. Zoran Nikolic followed a jump hook with a layup for a 4-2 Buducnost lead. Ray sank a jumper and Grant added a tip-in to give the visitors a 4-6 lead. Popovic stepped up for Buducnost and Cobbs added a floater, but Ray and Grant kept Promitheas in charge, 10-12. Popovic struck from beyond the arc, then Jagodic-Kuridza hit a jump hook, igniting an 11-0 run in which Seeley followed a three-pointer with a jumper that made it a double-digit game, 24-14. Andric tried to change things for the visitors but Reed's alley-oop layup restored a 26-16 Buducnost lead after 10 minutes.

 

Simpson struck from downtown early in the second quarter. Micov followed a jump hook with a backdoor layup for a 30-19 Buducnost lead. Grant answered with a layup and matched Seeley's jumper with a fastbreak dunk. Andric soon added a three-pointer and a driving basket that got Promitheas within 32-28. Kendrick Perry hit a floater and Jagodic-Kuridza scored down low to give Buducnost fresh air at 36-28. After Grant dunked again, Seeley and Abdul Gaddy traded baskets and Micov kept the hosts in control, 40-32. Cobbs sandwiched a pair of jumpers around a driving layup. Ray scored in penetration and Simpson buried a triple to bring Promitheas within 46-39 at halftime.

Seeley swished a jumper immediately after the break and Reed scored in the low post for a 50-39 Buducnost lead. Grant dunked again and followed Agravanis's fastbreak layup with a close basket. Ray took over with a two-handed put-back slam and Simpson struck from beyond the arc to tie the game, 50-50, after an 0-11 run. Reed nailed a close jumper and Popovic added a driving layup that restored a 54-50 Buducnost lead. Grant stepped up with a three-point play but Reed followed an off-balance basket with a wild step-back triple. Simpson and Popovic traded jumpers and Perry dunked off a steal for a 63-55 Buducnost lead. Popovic boosted the lead to 67-57 after 30 minutes.

 

Micov improved on Georgios Tanoulis's put-back layup with a bomb from downtown. Nikolaos Rogkavopoulos found his first points, but Perry and Zoran Nikolic extended the lead to 76-61. Rogkavopoulos struck from downtown, Edin Atic answered with a backdoor layup and Zoran Nikolic added a second-chance layup for an 80-64 advantage. Edin Atic bettered Grant's slam with a bomb from downtown and Perry soon added a jumper that sealed the outcome, 85-66, with over 3 minutes left. Promitheas never gave up but Buducnost had cruised to a well-deserved win.
