Gran Canaria regained first place in Group B by defeating Frutti Extra Bursaspor 87-81 on Wednesday to snap a two-game losing streak.
Gran Canaria beats Bursaspor 87-71 to return to first place



Gran Canaria, which qualified for the knock-out stage the day before thanks to other results, took control with an 18-5 run spanning the final two quarters. The victory raises its record to 10-4. Artem Pustovyi paced the winners with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Dylan Ennis added 16 points. Miquel Salvo scored 12 points, John Shurna chipped in 11 and Andrew Albicy contributed 10 points for the winners. Bursaspor lost its seventh straight road game to fall to 4-9 despite Derek Needham scoring 17 points. Onuralp Bitim, David Dudzinski and Andrew Andrews all tallied 16 points in the loss.

The three-pointers were falling early and often as Andrews and David Dudzinski hit for the guests before AJ Slaughter and John Shurna matched them for Gran Canaria. After Bitim’s triple made it 8-13, Shurna added another for the hosts to pull even 13-13. The teams kept striking from deep with Needham and Dudzinski draining triples for Bursaspor and Ennis made two from downtown. Dudzinski and Ennis both connected yet again and Bursaspor led 24-26 after 10 minutes.
The long ball barrage continued early in the second quarter with Miquel Salvo and John Holland each connecting from deep. Salvo took over the game for Gran Canaria with 9 straight points before Pustovyi came on and scored 4 points and put the hosts up 38-33. Bitim converted a three-point play for Bursaspor, but Pustovyi added 6 more points and a pair of Slaughter triples had Gran Canaria ahead 52-40. The score was 52-42 at halftime.
Bursaspor opened the second half with the first 5 points, including an Andrews triple. Needham followed later with a three-pointer and Dudzinski’s and-one had the visitors within 56-55. Gran Canaria buckled down in the final 3 minutes of the quarter with a 13-3 run including 5 points from Andrew Albicy to lead 71-60 after 30 minutes.
After Holland started the final frame, Albicy hit a triple and Pustovyi extended the advantage to 76-62. Needham scored 9 points as Bursaspor refused to go away with a 4-13 run to pull within 80-75 with 3 minutes left. Albicy came up with a big basket and Pustovyi made 2 free throws for an 84-77 lead with 102 seconds to play. Needham and Bitim both committed turnovers in the next two possessions and Bursaspor’s comeback hopes were done.
