ratiopharm Ulm cruised past U-BT Cluj-Napoca with a 91-71 win to clinch home-court advantage in Round 16 of the 7DAYS EuroCup. The hosts secured their sixth victory at the Ratiopharm Arena this season to finish third in Group A with an 11-7 record. Ulm was clinical from three-point land, draining a whopping 19 triples and dominating throughout the duel to thrash the visitors.
Ulm equaled both its all-time high on three-pointers as well as this season’s highest mark for any team in the competition. In fact, Ulm came into this game holding this season’s record of three-pointers made after going 19-for-36 (52.8%) in its 110-98 home win against Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse in Round 8 back in December.
"I want to congratulate Ulm for this victory,” Cluj head coach Mihai Silvasan told the press conference after the game. "They truly deserved it. They played good basketball, they moved the ball well and they had 19 threes made, which is a lot for a basketball game here in Europe."
All but two of the 10 Ulm players who featured in the game scored at least 1 point in the first quarter and everyone who stepped on the court on Wednesday night managed to get their names on the scoresheet before the break. More impressively, seven players nailed at least one triple as Ulm went 19-for-42 (45.2%) from behind the arc despite averaging 36.4% on three-pointers heading into this clash.
Brandon Paul, Yago dos Santos and Thomas Klepeisz sank 4 triples each. They were Ulm’s top scorers on the night with 16, 14 and 12 points, respectively. Bruno Caboclo opened the scoring from behind the arc in the first quarter, Robin Christen went 3-for-4 (75.0%) and Fedor Zugic nailed two to lead Ulm to a well-earned victory.
