This time it's 2018 vs. 2021. Two incredible squads. One spot in the next round.
Let the debate begin – and may the best team win!
2018
- Quino Colom, UNICS Kazan
- Scottie Wilbekin, Darussafaka
- Amedeo Della Valle, Reggio Emilia
- Ryan Broekhoff, Lokomotiv
- Devin Booker, Bayern
2021
- Milos Teodosic, Virtus
- Jamar Smith, UNICS
- Isaia Cordinier, Nanterre
- Mathias Lessort, Monaco
- Willie Reed, Buducnost
What I love about this one is that each team has the antidote to the opponent’s strengths. Let’s break them down. Team 2018 is the ultimate shooting team. Wilbekin not only averaged 3.5 triples per game, but he did it at 42.8%. And that’s with defenses focusing on him! What about when they have to worry about Broekhoff (50.6% 3FG) sniping from the corner. Booker brings athleticism to the paint and Della Valle compliments Wilbekin's scoring, while Colom distributes the ball. The team is quick and full of great shooters.
Their counterparts from 2021 are bigger, stronger and better at defense. Reed and Lessort can protect the rim and dominate the glass. Cordinier is a lockdown defender. Teodosic is the master passer and together with Smith – one of the great shooters in EuroCup history, they can stretch the floor.
So is it the power and defense of 2021 or the speed and shooting of 2018? I think over 40 minutes, Team 2021 would wear down their opponents. Only if Wilbekin and co. managed to truly shoot the lights out would their team stand a chance, as Broekhoff would struggle in the paint against either Lessort or Reed. By the way, the AI models I used were split on this! One had Wilbekin carrying 2018 to victory with 26 points and 6 assists – making 6 threes, including the dagger in the last minute. Another had Teodosic going for 17 and 8, Reed posting a double-double and Lessort blocking Wilbekin in the final minute to seal it. Now it’s your turn to decide!
