The next faceoff: 2025 vs. 2011. Two incredible squads. One spot in the next round.
Let the debate begin – and may the best team win!
2025
- Jared Harper, Jerusalem
- Jean Montero, Valencia
- Jaleen Smith, Bahcesehir
- Jonathan Motley, Hapoel Tel Aviv
- Mfiondu Kabengele, Umana Reyer
2011
- Dontaye Draper, Cedevita
- Terrell Lyday, UNICS Kazan
- Devin Smith, Benetton Treviso
- Tariq Kirksay, Sevilla
- Maciej Lampe, UNICS Kazan
Both the 2025 and 2011 teams are full of players on the rise. Three players from last season's All-EuroCup First Team (Montero, Motley and Kabengele) will play in the EuroLeague this season and two from the 2011 side (Lyday and Smith) played in the EuroLeague the next year. Moreover, the other two 2025 players have EuroLeague experience and two more 2011 players would be in the EuroLeague within two seasons.
Let’s analyze the strengths and weaknesses of these teams from different eras. Team 2025 has phenomenal backcourt speed between Harper and Montero, though it does not excel in perimeter defense. There is good size and rebounding ability in the Motley- Kabengele frontcourt, too. Their 2011 counterparts are a slightly older and more experienced team, with lots of defensive toughness plus Lampe as a stretch shooter to create space. However, outside of Lyday, there is no real go-to scorer on the team.
So who would win? I think the game would be a test of tempos and the faster 2025 could push the pace, the better its chances. With Motley and Kabengele, Team 2025 could at least hold their own on the glass if not downright control the boards and that would make the difference. I consulted with two AI systems for their opinions and both leaned towards Team 2025. In one, Motley had 24 points and 8 boards as the game’s MVP and in the other, Harper scored 24 and Motley added 18 and 9. So now that we settled how I think, what do you think?
