Round 10 co-MVPs: Theo Maledon, ASVEL and TJ Shorts, Paris
A pair of French teams registered impressive victories in Round 10, each led by their respective point guards, Theo Maledon and TJ Shorts, who have shared MVP of the Round honors thanks to their respective 36 PIR.
Maledon’s impressive sophomore season in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague continued with the LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne guard's dominant display in a 77-74 win against Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade. Maledon finished with 26 points, the second-highest total of his career, after going 4 for 4 on two-pointers, 3 for 5 on three-pointers and 9 for 10 from the free-throw line, while he also had 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and drew 10 fouls. This is the second time that Maledon has been the MVP of the Round after achieving this feat in Round 4 of this current season, when he also had a 36 PIR.
This time, Maledon shares this honor with Shorts, who led Paris Basketball to a resounding 87-103 road win at FC Barcelona. Shorts had 24 points, making 6-of-10 two-point shots, knocking down his only three-point attempt and sinking 9-of-11 free throws. Shorts also dished 9 assists, had 3 steals, pulled down 1 rebound and drew 11 fouls. This is also a second MVP award for Shorts, who previously earned this honor in Round 5.
The next best PIR, 29, belonged to Trevion Williams of ALBA Berlin. In a 115-88 road loss at FC Bayern Munich, Williams had 18 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Bayern's Nick Weiler-Babb and Olympiacos Piraeus’s Sasha Vezenkov both recorded a 28 PIR, rounding out this round's list of best performers. Weiler-Babb had 12 points on perfect shooting, in addition to grabbing 3 rebounds, dishing a career-high 11 assists, making 2 steals, and not committing a turnover. Vezenkov posted 21 points in a 91-94 triumph at Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, and he also amassed 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 6 drawn fouls.
Individual highs: Nick Weiler-Babb, Bayern, 11 assists
ASVEL’s Maledon outscored all players in Round 10 with his 26 points. Bayern’s Carsen Edwards is the EuroLeague’s leading scorer with 21.0 points per game.
Real Madrid center Walter Tavares pulled down a round-high 13 rebounds. Tavares is atop the charts in rebounds with 7.9 boards per night.
Bayern’s Weiler-Babb dished 11 assists in Round 10, the most of any player. Maccabi playmaker Tamir Blatt is the top assist provider in the EuroLeague with 8.7 dimes per contest.
Darius Thompson of Anadolu Efes Istanbul had 5 steals in Round 10, more than anyone else. AS Monaco’s Mike James and FC Barcelona’s Kevin Punter are tied for the most steals this season with 1.6 per game.
Andre Roberson, in just his second game for ASVEL, had a round-high 4 blocks. Anadolu Efes Istanbul’s Vincent Poirier and Real Madrid’s Tavares are the season leaders in blocks with 1.6 per contest.
Weiler-Babb (12 points, 11 assists), ASVEL’s Joffrey Lauvergne (13 points, 10 rebounds), Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz’s Donta Hall (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul’s Nigel Hayes-Davis (18 points, 11 rebounds) all recorded a double-double in Round 10.
