The Serbian team stretched its best-ever start to the EuroLeague Regular Season to three straight wins with a vintage performance in Istanbul
Rampant Zvezda brushes aside Fenerbahce, 57-76
Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade staged a major upset in Round 3 with an impressive 57-76 road win over Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul as Joel Bolomboy stood out with 18 points and 11 boards.
Nemanja Nedovic added 17 points for Zvezda and Mike Daum, who joined Zvezda during the off-season from Fenerbahce’s archrival Anadolu Efes Istanbul, enjoyed a memorable return to the Turkish capital with 14 points and 5 boards.
At the other end, Nigel Hayes-Davis paced Fenerbahce with a game-high 20 points to go with 8 boards, but the versatile forward was starved of support from his teammates as Devon Hall was the only other home player to register double figures, scoring 10 points.
Zvezda, which led throughout the lop-sided contest, made a flying start and raced into a 0-7 lead, which soared to 10-26 late in the first quarter as the visitors sank a barrage of deep threes from all over while stifling the home team with ironclad defense at the other end.
A rout was firmly on the cards when Zvezda pulled away to 12-31 early in the second, but Fenerbahce then enjoyed a rare good spell as it conjured a 10-0 run to slash the deficit. The hosts had beefed up their defense and were able to close the gap to 31-38 at halftime, largely thanks to Hayes-Davis who had 15 points on the interval, having scored 10 of his team’s opening 12 points.

A comeback looked likely when Fenerbahce closed to 41-45 early in the third quarter, but Daum then stepped up for Zvezda with some clutch baskets and the Serbian team pulled away to 42-54 ahead of the final 10 minutes, as Bolomboy continued to dominate at both ends of the floor.
Fenerbahce endured a torrid night plagued by poor shooting from all over in the wake of aggressive Zvezda defense. It was hardly surprising that the visiting team raced clear to 51-67 before Fenerbahce’s key player Wade Baldwin scored his first and only 3 points of the game late in the fourth quarter.
The unstoppable Nedovic put the icing on the cake for Zvezda in the closing stages, draining a pair of successive shots from downtown as some of the home fans left the gym in a hurry before the final buzzer while Zvezda’s players danced with delight.
