In the pre-dawn hours of Monday, February 6, a terrifying earthquake struck Turkiye and Syria, killing and injuring tens of thousands of people and leaving many more homeless.

While our thoughts are with all those affected by the earthquake and its heart-rending consequences, Euroleague Basketball would like to encourage everyone to help them by cooperating with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and OXFAM.

Before all this week's Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 7DAYS EuroCup games, a moment of silence will be held to honor the earthquake victims. Euroleague Basketball also decided to postpone the One Team Games celebration planned for this week in all EuroLeague and EuroCup arenas out of respect for those affected by the tragedy.

7bet-Lietkabelis has reasons to dream big this season. And Jamel Morris is one of the big reasons.

The Lithuanian club is headed to the 7DAYS EuroCup Eightfinals for the second straight season and this time, Coach Nenad Canak's are in the running to host their first game. In the win-or-go-home format of the EuroCup knockout stages, teams need a cold-blooded go-to guy with the game on the line and Morris fits that description perfectly.

Morris pulled up for a long three over Frutti Extra Bursaspor’s Anthony Clemmons in the dying seconds of Wednesday's game to lift his team to an 88-85 win. And that shot was eerily similar to his game-winning three in Round 14 against Umana Reyer Venice.

Morris has 2 similiar game-winners this season

On both occasions, he didn't simply show up in crunch time. He was the team’s leader all night. Against Bursaspor, Morris had a quiet first half with just 4 points and 2 assists. After the visitors extended their lead to double figures early in the third quarter, he went off for 5 points and 2 assists in a 7-0 run and he never cooled down. Morris finished the game with 21 points and 7 assists for a PIR of 22.

That marked his best scoring effort since… Round 14 when he torched Reyer for a season-high 28 points on 6-for-7 shooting.

Morris has a few of the key attributes needed for a winning team. He is not only Lietkabelis's top scorer this season with 15.2 points per game, but he is a modest and humble leader.

Game News

After the game, Morris called it "a beautiful game of basketball" while praising his opponents: "It was a game between two good teams. Their record doesn’t speak to how good they are. They have really good players. They made some really tough shots."

When pushed to comment about his shooting, Morris said: "God is good. That’s all I can say."

Perhaps it's because Morris has been there before as the game-winner. Nevertheless, it was the comment of a true winner.

Morris alone will not be enough to win games in the next stages, but he is merely a key part of a deep team. He was only third on the team in minutes on Wednesday with the starting backcourt of Vytenis Lipkevicius (27:31) and Kristian Kullamae (27:24) both playing more than Morris (27:11). In all, 10 players featured for at least 10 minutes and that depth will be important.

But Morris's talent, leadership and ability to take over in big spots and willingness to shoot with the game are the line are all traits that could come in handy when the stakes are raised next month.

With the goal of helping children and young adults with a rare form of leukemia, Euroleague Basketball referees in all Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 7DAYS EuroCup games this week will wear Golden Laces, the color of pediatric cancer, to focus attention on efforts being made throughout the continent to improve treatment and outcomes for young victims of the disease. 

Lucas, the son of one of those Euroleague Basketball referees, Carlos Peruga, is among the 350 children a year in Spain who are diagnosed with acute myeloid or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer that attacks the immune system. Without personalized and intense immunology treatments, the disease makes victims extremely vulnerable to life-threatening infections and serious bleeding. 

The Golden Laces are a symbol of the efforts of the Spanish foundation Unoentrecienmil (1 in 100,000), which has brought the European-wide ALLtogether treatment program to Spain. ALLTogether establishes an advanced treatment protocol that aims to improve survival and quality of life for children and young adults with ALL.

 

Study groups in a total of 14 countries in Europe seek to improve on the current survival rates of 90% in children and 75% in young adults by combating under-treatment, but also refining protocols to prevent over-treatment, which brings similar risks for survival, secondary cancers and long-term side effects.

With a new single-game 7DAYS EuroCup scoring record for this decade and a game-winning three-pointer that helped his team clinch home-court advantage in the upcoming eighthfinals, Anthony Cowan of Promitheas Patras earned his second consecutive MVP of the Round honor this week. His performance index rating of 38 was the EuroCup's best in Round 17. Cowan poured in 38 points in a crucial 84-81 victory over visiting Paris Basketball, marking the EuroCup's highest individual scoring total in five years, since Scottie Wilbekin scored 42 for Darussafaka in Game 2 of the 2018 semifinals against FC Bayern Munich. Cowan made 6 of 8 three-pointers and 10 of 10 free throws to go with 6 assists in less than 30 minutes on the floor. His scoring total and free throws made were both club records.

Second in line this week was [Yoeli Childs](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/yoeli-childs/012013/) of Veolia Towers Hamburg, whose PIR of 36 led his team to a playoff-clinching 89-87 win over Dolomiti Energia Trento, 89-87. Childs scored 18 points, pulled a career-high 20 rebounds and dished 4 assists. His 11 offensive boards were the most in a EuroCup game in 20 years. His Hamburg teammate [Anthony Polite](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/anthony-polite/011937/) followed with a PIR of 28, which two more players on losing sides in Round 17 – [Erick Green](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/erick-green/005159/) of Buducnost VOLI Podgorica and [Matteo Spagnolo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/matteo-spagnolo/008173/) of Dolomiti Energia Trento – also matched.

[Anthony Cowan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/anthony-cowan/012003/) of Promitheas Patras led all scorers this week with an overall season-high 38 points. This was also a new record for Patras in the 7DAYS EuroCup. [Yogi Ferrell](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/yogi-ferrell/011281/) of already-eliminated Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana leads all scorers with his 19.1 points per game. [Yoeli Childs](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/yoeli-childs/012013/) of Veolia Hamburg Towers was a giant under the glass with 20 rebounds, tying for the third-best mark ever in the competition, just behind Lazaros Papdopoulos's 22 in 2004-05 and Alen Omic's 21 earlier this season in Round 4. Childs ripped 11 offensive rebounds, the most in the EuroCup in 20 years. Buducnost VOLI Podgorica [Alpha Kaba](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/alpha-kaba/007855/) still leads all rebounders for this season with 10.9 rebounds per game. [Ferran Bassas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/ferran-bassas/001607/) of Gran Canaria was the only player this week to reach the double figures in assists, with 10. [J'Covan Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/j-covan-brown/011991/) of Hapoel Vegan Friendly Tel Aviv remains the best passer overall with an average of 6.8 assists. [Josh Hawley](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/joshua-hawley/012024/) of ratiopharm Ulm made a round-high 5 steals. Slask Wroclaw's [Jeremiah Martin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/jeremiah-martin/011899/) leads all players in this category with 2.5 steals per game. There was only one double-double this week, the one by Childs, thanks to his 18 points and 20 rebounds.

Trades are now open for Round 18. Remember, three trades are allowed before each round until the end of the regular season, and you can also trade your head coach.

The first games in Round 18, Hapoel vs. Promitheas and Frutti Extra Bursaspor vs. Germani Brescia, are scheduled to tip off on Tuesday, March 28 at 19:00 CET, and thus marks the next round's deadline.

Slask misfired heavily after the break, going 0 of 10 from beyond the arc 

Shooting meltdown put Slask to the sword against Hapoel

Hapoel Vegan Friendly Tel Aviv never seemed to hit top gear in its 76-87 win at Slask Wroclaw and the visitors were able to cruise through the contest as the Polish side fell apart in the closing stages, having battled hard for 35 minutes or so to stay in the game.

Slask looked capable of pulling off what would have been only its second EuroCup win of the season in 17 games, as it shot 7 of 14 from three-point range in the first half with Jakub Niziol nailing 3 of those efforts. However, the home side misfired heavily after the break, going 0 of 10 from beyond the arc while they also finished the match with 13 turnovers.

"In the first half, we played like a team and passed the ball," Slask head coach Ertugrul Erdogan commented. "But when you don’t play together you’re in trouble. We’re not a great team but when we play together we are a dangerous team,"

Hapoel ended on 7-of-17 shooting from three-point range, having racked up 22 assists to Slask’s 16. The visitors also had 3 turnovers fewer than the Polish team, making the most of their deeper roster to come out on top.

Having already secured a top-four finish in Group B and hence home-court advantage in the eighthfinals before it brushed Slask aside, Hapoel now has a chance to finish as the group’s runners-up – much to the delight of its head coach Danny Franco.

Promitheas led 81-71 with over 2 minutes left before Paris used a 0-10 run to tie the game. That's when Anthony Cowan took matters into his own hands, running the game clock down before burying the go-ahead three-pointer with 4.3 seconds left. He rounded out a near-perfect performance: Cowan finished the game with EuroCup season-high and Promitheas record 38 points. Joe Young had scored 34 points against Gran Canaria in Round 2 this season.

Paris buried 6 of 26 three-point shots in Patras. Its shooting percentage (23.1% 3FG) was its third lowest this season: Paris shot under 20% on the road against Hapoel Vegan Friendly Jerusalem (16.3%) and at home against Promitheas (18.% 3FG). Promitheas sank 10 of 21 three-pointers (47.6% 3FG), and Cowan went 6 of 8 from downtown. Promitheas made 20 of 53 three-pointers in its two wins against Paris this season while limiting its opponents to 12-of-58 shooting from downtown.

U-BT Cluj-Napoca produced a hard-fought comeback and turned the game around in the last quarter, but Prometey Slobozhanske defended well and conceded just 4 points in the last 6 minutes to secure an 87-96 win. Yet, Prometey was anything but solid in defense overall, as it allowed Cluj to score 87 points.

The key to coming out victorious from Wednesday’s game was the visitors' dominance in offensive rebounds, beating Cluj 13-17 in that category to produce 23 second-chance points. Heading into Wednesday’s clash, Prometey boasted an average of 12.8 offensive rebounds per game - the second-best mark in the 7DAYS EuroCup. As Cluj head coach Mihai Silvasan pointed out in the post-match press conference, his players were aware that Prometey could cause them trouble with their offensive boards, but they struggled to stop them.

"We allowed \[Prometey to grab\] 17 offensive rebounds and that’s not what we wanted," Silvasan stressed. "We prepared for this game knowing that this team scores lots of points – they are top in the EuroCup in terms of points scored per game. So offensive rebounds and transitions are their weapons and we couldn’t stop at least one of these weapons."

Indeed, eight Prometey players grabbed at least 1 offensive rebound each, with Ondrej Balvin grabbing 5 boards – his second-best mark this season. He was followed by DJ Kennedy, who added 3. Meanwhile, 6 of their 17 offensive rebounds came in the last quarter, when Prometey needed them the most in their bid to seal their 10th straight victory.

For the season, the 26-year-old American is averaging 10.6 points in 17 games. But the 7DAYS EuroCup debutant continued the strange rhythm of good games in odd-numbered rounds followed by subpar showings in even-numbered ones.

Ellenson scored just 6 points in Round 16 against U-BT Cluj-Napoca, and he averaged just 4.6 points in Rounds 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. All told, he averaged 7.0 points in the eight even-numbered games thus far.

On the other hand, six of Ellenson’s seven top-scoring games came in odd-numbered rounds. He has now tallied at least 12 points in each of the last five games and for the nine odd-numbered games Ellenson averaged 13.8 points.

Eric, a 2018 EuroCup champion with Darussafaka Istanbul, came off the bench and played just 13:15 minutes, but it was enough to dominate the paint. He made 6-of-7 two-point shots in scoring 13 points and pulled down 5 rebounds. In his time on the floor, Eric had a +17 in +/- column, by far the highest of any player in this game.

Joventut Badalona kept alive its chances to win Group A with a 74-80 win at Umana Reyer Venice behind the play of its point guard Andres Feliz. The 25-year old finished the game with 13 points, tied his career high with 7 assists, and was tied for a team-high with 7 rebounds. It is not the first time this season Feliz came close to a triple-double, but it was the first time he scored in double figures while posting at least 7 assists and rebounds apiece. And he did all that in 23 minutes and 15 seconds on the floor.
