The list of high-level European prospects who have come to ratiopharm Ulm and taken major steps forward continues to grow. With names like Killian Hayes, Juan Nunez, Pacome Dadiet, and most recently Ben Saraf and Noa Essengue, the German club’s reputation for developing young talent was simply too strong for Diego Garavaglia to ignore.

Diego Garavaglia: 'Ulm’s history brought me here'

The Italian guard, who came through the youth ranks of [EA7 Emporio Armani Milan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ea7-emporio-armani-milan/mil/), had already achieved success at both club and national team level. So when it was time to take the next step, Ulm stood out for more than just basketball reasons.

"I looked at a couple of Italian clubs that really wanted me. They were known for giving young players real minutes, not just putting them on the bench. But what made me choose Ulm was just their history,” said Garavaglia, who also had the option of playing college basketball in the United States. “There’s good money there \[in the US\], but Ulm felt like the right place for me."

A big part of his decision came down to trust in Ulm head coach Ty Harrelson, sporting director Thorsten Leibenath, and the overall management team.

“I like how they think about a young player developing over the course of a season – having the ball in his hands, being allowed to make mistakes, turn the ball over. It’s part of the process,” he said. “In Italy, that doesn’t happen as much. Young players are usually expected to just play defense. It’s a different approach.”

Garavaglia also noted that Ulm’s philosophy extends beyond just the court.

"They see young players as professionals off the court, too. I’m excited to live the whole season like a pro – traveling a lot, playing in tough arenas, and getting better every day. I’m playing with a top-level team in Germany and in the EuroCup, so it’s going to be intense. It’s also my first year outside Italy, living on my own. It’s going to help me grow in every way.”

He recalled a conversation with Leibenath during last season’s German League Playoffs that helped seal the move.

“He told me, ‘If you come here, you’re not going to live with other players. You’re going to live alone because we see you as a professional. That means being responsible and taking care of yourself on and off the court.’ I really liked that. It made me feel like they believed in me.”

Living alone, of course, comes with new challenges – like cooking for yourself. Garavaglia came prepared, bringing a serious taste of home with him: 20 kilograms of pasta, five bottles of olive oil, and three bricks of Parmesan cheese.

“I brought it all from home, just to be safe,” he said with a smile.

At a preseason fan event, someone from the club tipped him off about an Italian market near his apartment, and he’s eager to check it out. But he’s also counting on his parents to bring reinforcements when they come to visit.

Garavaglia already has experience on big stages. This past spring, he helped [U18 EA7 Emporio Armani Milan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/ngt/teams/u18-ea7-emporio-armani-milan/jmi/) reach the [Championship Game of the 2024-25 Adidas Next Generation EuroLeague](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/ngt/news/jtf424-next-gen-dubai-report-final-milan-zalgiris/), where it lost to U18 Zalgiris Kaunas in Abu Dhabi.

“We had already beaten Zalgiris twice that season, so I really thought we were going to win. But they had something extra in that final,” said Garavaglia, who finished with 13 points and 7 assists in 37 minutes during the 89–81 loss.

That game still lingers in his mind, not just because of the result but because it was his final game with Milan.

“Every time I think about that game, I feel like we could have won. It was my last one with Milan, and that makes it harder. We deserved to win that competition for how we played. I’m really sad it ended like that.”

Despite that disappointment, Garavaglia left Milan with a full trophy cabinet. He won the Italian U15 title, as well as the U20 Next Gen Cup and U19 Italian League championship in 2024 and 2025. On the international stage, he helped Italy win silver at the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2023, silver at the FIBA U17 World Cup 2024, and bronze at the FIBA U18 EuroBasket 2025, where he was also named to the All-Star Five.

One of the games Garavaglia is especially looking forward to this season is December 4 against [Dolomiti Energia Trento](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/dolomiti-energia-trento/trn/) in the EuroCup. Not only will he be facing an Italian team, but Trento’s roster includes two young Italian players he knows well – [Theo Airhienbuwa](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/theo-airhienbuwa/012289/) (born in 2006) and especially [Patrick Hassan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/patrick-hassan/012242/), a fellow 2007-born talent.

“They were one of the teams that wanted me back in Italy. They’re a great place for young players. I know Patrick really well – we’ve played together for Italy the last three summers and won three medals together,” he said. “I hope he plays. Every time I’ve played against him with our clubs, I’ve won. I want to keep that going. No reason to change a winning formula,” he joked.

So far, Garavaglia is clearly enjoying his time in Ulm and is confident he made the right move.

“I feel good here. I’m growing, I’m learning, and I’m playing in a high-level environment. Ulm is the perfect place for me right now.”

Nikolic is a familiar face to the club’s fans, having represented Buducnost for many years and contributed to numerous successes. After three years away, he is returning to the blue and white ranks, ready to strengthen the team with his quality and experience.

The 29-year-old center joins after last playing for SC Derby, where he posted 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 block per game across 29 ABA League appearances.

Coming off a run to the EuroCup Eighthfinals last season, Buducnost is aiming to go further this time around. The performance in London was a promising first step.

Andrej Zakelj’s side set the tone early, holding the Lions to just 12 and 13 points respectively in the opening two quarters. Buducnost stayed aggressive throughout, forcing 15 turnovers and converting them into 17 points, many coming in transition.

“As we continued to raise the intensity on defense, I don’t think it’s a coincidence – that’s when we started to separate,” Sulaimon added.

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica opened its 2025-26 EuroCup season with a comfortable 59-86 victory at the London Lions on Thursday night. The visitors dominated from the off at Copper Box Arena and led from start to finish, which allowed them to celebrate their first win of the campaign.

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica opened its 2025-26 BKT EuroCup season with a comfortable 59-86 victory at the London Lions on Thursday night. The visitors dominated from the off at Copper Box Arena and led from start to finish, which allowed them to celebrate their first win of the campaign.

Nikola Tanaskovic bagged a team-high 13 points, with Skylar Mays, Axel Bouteille and Rasheed Sulaimon netting 12 each. Kameron McGusty paced London with 13 points, 9 of which were scored in the fourth quarter.

Buducnost opened the game with a 0-6 run, with all three scores coming from inside the arc. It took London 4 minutes to get its first bucket, with Joel Scott netting a corner triple. But the visitors dictated the tempo through their defense, with seven players getting on the scoresheet to secure a 12-20 cushion after 10 minutes.

Mays hit the ground running in the second quarter, drilling two triples and a couple of jumpers to open a 15-34 lead. Then, Fletcher Magee scored his first 5 points of the game and Dordije Jovanovic connected from deep as Buducnost maintained a 25-46 advantage at halftime.

Tarik Phillip scored the first bucket of the second half, but back-to-back triples from Bouteille restored a 30-52 lead. Aaryn Rai netted twice from beyond the arc before finding Deane Williams, who nailed one of his own, slightly cutting the deficit to 39-58. Yet, the guests ended the third quarter with a 2-8 run, taking a 25-point lead (41-66) into the fourth.

The game turned into an exchange of blows in the opening stages of the closing quarter, with a red-hot McGusty bagging 9 straight points before a Sulaimon triple made it 53-74 for the visitors. London tried to find the energy for a final comeback push, but Buducnost’s defense remained tight until the final buzzer, sealing the outcome in the English capital.

But beyond the numbers, Rubit’s poise and physical presence stood out. Facing a rugged Besiktas frontcourt featuring Ante Zizic and Ismael Kamagate, Rubit used quick footwork, smart positioning, and the kind of composure that only comes with experience. He drew fouls, found angles, and kept the offense steady down the stretch. In short, he looked like the leader Lietkabelis needed – and the player many wondered if they’d see again.

Rubit’s journey hasn’t been without setbacks. After launching his European career in Germany with Walter Tigers Tubingen, ratiopharm Ulm, and Brose Bamberg, he climbed the ranks to reach EuroLeague prominence with Olympiacos Piraeus, Zalgiris Kaunas, and FC Bayern Munich. At his peak in Munich during the 2022–23 season, he was named EuroLeague MVP of the Month for January, only to suffer a serious Achilles injury shortly after.

His move to Kuwait last season led many to believe his time at the top level in Europe might be over. But Rubit saw things differently. Signing with Lietkabelis this summer, he made his EuroCup return after an eight-year absence and immediately showed he still belongs.

This victory not only ended a long wait but also marked Panionios’s return to the competition for the first time since 2014.

The last time Panionios won a EuroCup game was on December 11, 2013, when it triumphed 77-67 over Besiktas. Since then, the Greek club had been absent from the competition, but their return was nothing short of memorable.

"It’s a historic game for a historic club. Coming back to the EuroCup with Panionios after 11 years is incredibly exciting. And to start this journey with a win makes it even more special," said Panionios head coach Luka Pavicevic after the game. "We’ve been working hard to build a new team, and it was important to begin this chapter with a victory."

"We knew how much it meant to Panionios to return to the EuroCup after all these years. We wanted to make it count. We gave everything."

Lountzis, 27, was instrumental in the win, not only with his scoring but also as the team’s most experienced player in European competition. He is the only current Panionios player with prior EuroCup experience, having averaged 6.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists over 10 games with Promitheas Patras during the 2020-21 season. Lountzis has also appeared in 52 EuroLeague games with Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens and Olympiacos Piraeus.

Five Panionios players finished the game in double figures, but it was [Jaylen Hands](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/jaylen-hands/013914/) who stole the show. With the score tied at 86 in the final 34 seconds, Hands nailed two crucial three-pointers – his first two of the game after a 1-of-13 shooting performance – sealing the win with a game-winning shot with 6.4 seconds left.

"Jaylen hit some massive shots, and that made all the difference," Lountzis said. "It was a great team effort, but those clutch shots were huge."

Despite his earlier shooting struggles, Hands remained confident. "It took a lot of energy, focus, and those two big shots from Jaylen to win this one," said Coach Pavicevic. "But this win is so important for Panionios, especially at this moment in time."

For Panionios, the victory represents not only a successful return to the EuroCup but also a hopeful start to what it hopes will be a promising new era in European competition.

Despite holding a comfortable 15-point lead at halftime, [Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/cedevita-olimpija-ljubljana/lju/)’s head coach Zvezdan Mitrovic remained focused on one key objective: “To stop their transition – that’s our main goal today,” he told TV cameras when asked about his second-half strategy.

Mitrovic knew how dangerous BAXI Manresa could be if allowed to push the pace and run quick offenses. That mantra was repeated before, during, and after the game.

His patience paid off, as Cedevita executed their game plan perfectly in Round 1 of the new BKT EuroCup campaign, [securing a 76-69 victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/cedevita-olimpija-gets-past-manresa-76-69/). The home team forced 22 turnovers and limited Manresa to just 10 fast-break points, while converting 26-of-29 free throws – compared to Manresa’s 9 of 16 from the line.

“I think it’s a very important victory, especially against Manresa and for our first game,” Mitrovic said with satisfaction. “I’m pretty happy about it.”

Cedevita’s success came from disrupting Manresa’s ball movement, minimizing easy baskets, and controlling the tempo with a deliberate, slower pace. An early 11-0 run helped establish a 42-27 halftime lead.

“Our defense, especially in the first half, was the deciding factor today,” Mitrovic explained. “We stopped their transition game. The second half wasn’t as easy, but we maintained our advantage throughout and absolutely deserved this win.”

Cedevita pushed the lead to 21 points early in the second half at 48-27, nearly putting the game out of reach. However, Manresa refused to fold and fought back, cutting the deficit to just five points, 71-66, entering the final minute.

“Definitely, it was a bit ugly in the second half,” [Thomas Kennedy](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/thomas-kennedy/013973/) admitted after the game. “But what’s important is that we controlled their pace. They’re a very high-tempo team, and from the jump ball, we were able to dictate the pace. They found a bit more rhythm in the second half, but a win is a win. It’s important to get that first one.”

The experienced [Kenan Sipahi](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/kenan-sipahi/005275/), still fresh from winning a silver medal with Turkiye at the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket, chipped in with 11 points, including a pair of clutch three-pointers which ultimately forced the hard-fighting Cluj into submission.

Just as importantly, Bahcesehir’s bench netted almost a half of the team’s points tally, with the visitors thoroughly dominating the paint as they racked up 34 rebounds. A staggering 17 of them came on the offensive end, giving the Turkish team a massive advantage in the paint as Cluj only collected 25 boards and a mere 6 on offense.

Bahcesehir’s head coach Marko Barac felt this team’s performance left something to be desired, but he had no complaints about a sterling effort which helped the Turkish outfit come out on top.

“This team still has a lot of room to improve and I am sure we will grow,” Barac said in a postgame interview. “It’s a completely new roster and much like everybody else, we had a couple of injuries during the preseason. 

"The most important thing for me as a coach, however, is to find a way to win even when we’re not playing our A game. Our team’s character made the difference because Cluj are known to be an aggressive team and playing in this kind of atmosphere is never easy.”

Flynn was at the heart of the success as he mixed delightful layups with sound mid-range shooting and a pair of telling efforts from downtown, adding 4 assists for good measure. The 26-year-old American, who joined Bahcesehir during the off-season after five years in the NBA, was appreciative of the good work his teammates had put in.

“It feels great to win in a tough environment and it’s a great start for our team,” he said. “It was a big team effort as every player came in, guys came off the bench and contributed and you never know with our team who’s going to step up to the plate. I think it will be like that throughout the season.”

The defeat left a bitter taste for Cluj head coach Mihai Silvasan, who conceded that his team got punished ruthlessly for being second best in the paint, as well as for poor offense in crunch time.

“We were closing the game for three quarters but in the end we committed some sloppy turnovers and missed some easy shots,” Sivasan said. “We also gave away 17 offensive rebounds to them and it killed us. Obviously we don’t like it, but we need to move forward and focus on the upcoming games.”

The visitors also benefited from an avalanche of offensive boards in a thrilling contest

Lietkabelis began its EuroCup season on a high note, claiming a home win over Besiktas 85-79 at Kalnapilio Arena. After missing out on the playoffs last year, the Lithuanian team made a strong statement to begin the new season. Lietkabelis had multiple players step up as Augustine Rubit finished with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, Kristian Kullamae scored 17 points and also added 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Paulius Danusevicius chipped in 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Besiktas was led by Jonah Matthews with 15 points, while Devon Dotson added 14 points and Anthony Brown contributed 12 points.

Flynn poured a game-high 24 points for Bahcesehir and racked up 7 boards, while Hunter Hale added 16 points for the Turkish team which shot an impressive 13 of 26 from three-point range. Ismet Akpinar netted 13 points for the visiting team and Kenan Sipahi added 11, including a clutch three-pointer which put his outfit in a commanding position in the fourth quarter. At the other end, Fatts Russel led Cluj on 21 points. Iverson Molinar netted 20, Dusan Miletic amassed 17 and 7 boards while Mitch Creek posted 18 points for the home team, but the support cast was almost invisible as Bahcesehir prevailed thanks to a deep roster.

Jaylen Hands buried two three-pointers in the final 34 seconds, including the game-winning triple with 6.4 seconds to go. The hosts improved to 1-0 while the visitors start their debut campaign with a defeat. An 11-0 opening run allowed Cedevita to build a solid double-digit lead at halftime, 42-27, that went above 20 points in the second half. A late rally by Manresa cut the deficit to 5 points in the last period, but a three by Aleksej Nikolic with 27 seconds left secured the home win. Nikolic paced the winners with 17 points and 6 assists, Thomas Kennedy posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards, and Nikos Chougkaz added 10 and 9. Alex Reyes led Manresa with 16 points, Louis Olinde had 11, while Grant Golden and Hugo Benitez contributed 10 apiece for the losing side.
