Coach Can, Turk Telekom: 'It is an important win'

### Turk Telekom Ankara head coach Erdem Can:

"First of all, it is great winning on the road, because we know London Lions has a good roster and a very good coaching staff. They know what they are doing. It was important that they had a great home crowd over here. Plus, in advance, I would like to thank the Turkish population over here. They were at the gym and supporting us great. Again, I said right after the game that the days we have been through as Turkiye, after this earthquake, were tough, so whatever we do by representing our country, any success is going to be a great honor for us because we want to honor the people that we lost, that is the first thing. I think we at least secured the third position, but we still have a game against Buducnost next week. We have to win that and secure the second spot, and then we will see, we will go from there."

### London Lions head coach Ryan Schmidt:

"It is tough to lose a game like that. I thought our guys really battled, but I give credit to Turk Telekom, I think they are a really good team, they are where they are in the standings for a reason: a lot of talent, very well-coached, getting it done in both sides of the ball. I think we did a lot of good things to get ourselves a chance. I think there were two moments, specifically, one in each half, in which the game could have gone out of handle a little bit but I think we resolved it really well. We challenged our wings and our guard to be better when it comes to rebounding the basketball but obviously, the stats sheet says that they had 18, and I think they got more than that, offensive rebounds. It is going to be tough to win any ball game when you are giving up 18 offensive rebounds. We gave them 11 points at the free-throw line, which is tough. I told those guys in the locker room it is a tough loss, but I think there are a lot of good things that we can take from that game, competing with a team like that down to the wire is something we can kind of carry forward and hopefully, continue to play good basketball. But at the same time, we need to clean those little things as we get closer and closer to playoff time."

### Turk Telekom Ankara forward Axel Bouteille:

"I think I missed some shots in the first half, at the start of the game. In the second half, I started making shots, helping the team, helping defensively. I am happy that we were here in a good atmosphere and a good crowd, it was nice for our team. We just have to take care of the last game now, think about this one and then be ready for the playoffs, because we know the format this year and everything. We just need to win this game and be ready for the playoffs."

Turk Telekom Ankara survived a tough test in Group B by downing London Lions 84-89 at Copperbox Arena in the British capital on Wednesday.

Turk Telekom Ankara survived a tough test in Group B by downing London Lions 84-89 at Copperbox Arena in the British capital on Wednesday. Turk Telekom improved to 12-5 and remained in the race to finish second in Group B. London dropped to 7-10 and is locked into seventh place already, set to face either Prometey Slobozhanske or Joventut Badalona in the EuroCup Eighthfinals.

Axel Bouteille paced the winners with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Tyrique Jones added 16 points and 9 rebounds, Micheal Eric scored 13 points and Erkan Yilmaz 11 for Turk Telekom. Sam Dekker led London with 25 points, but left the game with an ankle injury in the final seconds. Miye Oni added 21 points, Tomislav Zubcic had 14 and Luke Nelson got 11 for London, in what was likely its final EuroCup home game of the 2022-23 season.

Yilmaz and Bouteille stepped up early to give Turk Telekom a 7-10 lead. Yilmaz struck from downtown and Eric followed back-to-back jump hooks with a put-back layup to boost the lead to 12-19. Nate Sestina hit a triple and Tony Taylor added a jumper to make it a double-digit game, 14-24, late in the first quarter. 

Nelson struck twice from beyond the arc and got help from Vojtech Hruban and Dekker to get London within 26-28. Jerian Grant and Bouteille rescued Turk Telekom and Jones's close basket gave his team a 30-36 lead. Yilmaz followed a put-back dunk with a layup and then Eric scored again for a 38-44 Turk Telekom lead at halftime.

Zubcic struck twice from downtown, added a jump hook and fed Oni for a corner triple that completed London's comeback, 49-48. Jones stopped the show with a huge alley-oop dunk-and-foul that Dekker matched with a triple. Grant and Eric each scored around the basket. Bouteille downed two bombs from beyond the arc and added a layup to boost his team's lead to 62-70 after 30 minutes. 

Bouteille fired in his third triple early in the fourth quarter and soon added a floater that restored a double-digit Turk Telekom lead, 66-76, with 6 minutes left. The hosts were not done, however, as Dekker and Oni got London within 79-81 with over 2 minutes left. Bouteille sank a mid-range jumper, Jones added a fastbreak slam and Grant sealed the outcome from the foul line.

Coach Franco, Hapoel: 'We want to keep on dreaming'

"I want to thank Slask for their hospitality and the opportunity for a very nice visit to the city of Wroclaw. We came here to a game that was important to us in our effort to stay as close to the top of the group as possible. Slask played very well today but we tightened our defense in the second half. It helped us make a run and build a lead that we were able to protect and increase until the end. We are having a great second round \[of the regular season\] in the EuroCup, our results are great and we are very happy with that. We’ll keep on going as much as we can and keep on dreaming as long as we can."

### Slask Wroclaw head coach Ertugrul Erdogan:

"Congratulations to Hapoel Tel Aviv, I think they have one of the best rosters in the EuroCup. We did a pretty good job, especially in the third quarter, but should really analyze the fourth quarter. In the first half, we shot 7 of 14 from three-point range and that was down to the shot selection, which means we played like a team and passed the ball. In the second half, 0 out of 10 and we ended up with 13 turnovers, which means that when you don’t play together you’re in trouble. We’re not a great team but when we play together we are a dangerous team. I cannot complain about the effort though, these guys fight. We should learn something from the defeat and accept that the Polish League is our reality right now."

Palmer came to the rescue, but his effort didn’t prevent Ulm from finishing the first period leading 24-27.

Pierre Pelos and Maxime Courby nailed back-to-back triples that capped the rally, 30-27, early in the second, but Ulm reacted quickly thanks to Hawley and Jallow, who combined for 10 points in 3 minutes to return a 34-37 margin for the visitors. Despite Caboclo having to head the bench with 3 fouls, Ulm didn’t stop. Paul and Nunez drilled one three each to make it a double-digit margin, 35-45. Even though Bourg stopped the game to try to regroup, the visitors exploited Bourg’s turnovers and missed shots to extend the margin even more, 35-54, at halftime.

The home team didn’t want to let the game end so early and came out strong to start a 6-0 run that forced Ulm to call a timeout after only 80 seconds. The break didn’t stop Bourg’s momentum, though, as Hugo Benitez showed up from deep and Kokila drew an unsportsmanlike foul that reduced the distance to single-digits, 49-58, midway through the third quarter. The rally didn’t go further, however, as Ulm found some offensive production from Nunez and Caboclo to cool it down, 52-65. Caboclo’s fourth foul ignited Bourg, which went for a 7-0 run behind a three-point play by Courby and a three by Frantz Massenat to enter the last stanza down 59-65.

Axel Julian made it even tighter, 62-67, with 8 minutes remaining. Ulm decided to return Caboclo to the court and he immediately produced a triple and grabbed a rebound that gave the confidence back to the visitors. Nunez followed with a three-point play and Hawley finished a fastbreak with a dunk to make it a double-digit lead again, 62-75. Bourg had not said its last word yet, as Palmer took the reins on offense for Bourg, and Mike converted twice from the line to establish a 70-77 score entering crunch time. Jordan Floyd made it 74-80 with an acrobatic layup, then stole a ball, but his three-point attempt went in and out and he committed an unsportsmanlike foul that put the game to bed.

Prometey Slobozhanske extended its winning streak to 10 games with an 87-96 victory over U-BT Cluj-Napoca at Bt-Arena on Wednesday. The visitors led for the majority of the game, but Cluj bounced back and even grabbed a narrow lead in the last quarter, only for Prometey to respond with a 10-0 run that helped it secure the win. The Group A leaders improved to 13-4 and the already-eliminated Cluj dropped to 5-12.

Caleb Agada led the winning side with 21 points in addition to 5 rebounds and 8 drawn fouls to his name for a PIR of 25. Another four Prometey players registered double-digits in scoring: DJ Kennedy scored 15, Gian Clavell and DJ Stephens added 12 each and Denis Lukashov 11. Emanuel Cate scored 17 points for Cluj, with Andrija Stipanovic and Nemanja Gordic finishing the game with 14 and 12, respectively.

Prometey got off to a strong start, as Denys Lukashov sank 2 triples, with Agada and Stephens scoring 2 free throws apiece to give the visitors an early 0-10 lead. Cluj head coach Mihai Silvasan was forced to call a timeout, but Kennedy extended Prometey’s run to 0-13 following the short break. After being held scoreless for 3 and a half minutes, Cluj netted its first points through Leonardo Meindl, who nailed a three-pointer, 3-13. Jalen Jones detonated a dunk in transition, with Meindl scoring a second triple and Andrija Stipanovic netting 4 points to reduce the deficit to 16-19. Yet, Cluj struggled on defense and trailed 22-28 after 10 minutes.

What followed was a one-man-show from Clavell, who scored 11 points in the second quarter to help his team maintain its lead. Cate took his tally to 11 points too, but Prometey was extraordinary in attack and secured a 46-51 lead heading into halftime.

Meindl scored his third three-pointer of the night to help Cluj stay close after the break, 49-51, but Kennedy, Stephens and Agada responded to push the advantage back to double digits, 53-63. That’s when Stipanovic came to the fore, scoring 8 back-to-back points to give Cluj a chance to stay in the game, as the hosts reduced the deficit to just 70-72 at the end of the third quarter.

Stefan Bircevic scored from behind the arc to complete Cluj’s comeback, 73-72, seconds into the fourth quarter and Nemanja Gordic sank a pair of three-pointers to help the hosts maintain the lead, 81-78. Kennedy and Ivan Tkachenko came off the bench to provide the visitors a much-needed boost, with the former netting 2 free-throws and the latter nailing one from downtown to inspire Prometey to a 5-0 run. The visitors extended their run to 10-0 for an 83-91 lead to practically put the game to bed with less than 2 minutes to go, as Cluj managed to score just 4 points in the last 6 minutes.

Lietkebelis's 21 turnovers were 8 more than visiting Bursaspor had committed. It's tough to overcome such a number unless many other things go one’s way. And for Lietkebelis, they did.

With a little over 1 minute remaining, Kristian Kullamae of 7bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys tried to force a pass into the high post. Frutti Extra Busraspor's Yigitan Saybir reacted to deflect the pass and it led to a Zach Auguste score and an 83-84 lead for the visitors.

That was the 21st turnover of the night for Lietkabelis, which was 8 more than visiting Bursaspor had committed. It's tough to overcome such a number unless many other things go one’s way. And for Lietkebelis, they did.

Bursaspor scored only 24 points off those turnovers, while the home team took in 17 points from turnovers. Another advantage Lietkabelis had was on the glass; it outrebounded Bursaspor 34-21. Eight of the 10 players who saw playing time for Lietkabelis grabbed at least 2 rebounds, led by Nikola Popovic with 6.

More than anything else, Lietkabelis simply shot the lights out. It made 69.0% of its two-pointers (20 of 29), 40.9% of its threes (9 of 22) and 84.0% of free throws (21 of 25). All 10 Lietkabelis players made a basket.

That combination of depth, aggressiveness on the boards and excellent shooting made the difference on what was a nightmarish night in terms of ballhandling for Lietkabelis.
