 Buducnost rolls in Hamburg, 59-87 

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica avenged an opening-game loss and moved up in the Group B standings by downing undermanned host Veolia Hamburg Towers 59-87 on Wednesday. Buducnost lifted its record to 6-4 while Hamburg fell into danger at 3-6, just one win into the playoffs zone.

Erick Green, in his EuroCup return, led Buducnost with 22 points. Aleksa Ilic posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Alpha Kaba had 10 and 9, respectively. Hamburg, which was missing four players who average a combined 39.8 points, got 18 from Marvin Clark plus 17 and 12 rebounds from Lukas Meisner. Buducnosts 29-46 advantage on the boards was decisive.

Kaba downed 6 points as Buducnost went up 2-8 but Meisner scored inside and out to tie 8-8. Ilic and Green helped Buducnost pull away 11-16 . Ilic blasted a putback as the visitors led 13-20 after 10 minutes. Green's triple early in the second quarter was answered by James Woodard and Meisner as Hamburg stayed within 21-26. Kaba, Cameron Reynolds and Tre Bell-Haynes, from deep, pushed the difference to double-digits, 25-35. Len Schoormann and Clark's long-range shooting kept it from getting worse, but Green restored a 33-43 halftime lead for Buducnost. 

J.J. O'Brien lengthened the difference to 33-47 before Meisner and Petar Popovic traded triples. Bell-Haynes and Reynolds, from long distance, made it a runaway already at 38-57 midway through the third quarter. Clark and Woodard did what they could to lower the difference to 49-65 after 30 minutes. The Hamburg duo kept trying but they were outgunned by Green and Ilic as the lead climbed to 54-74, leaving the outcome no longer in any doubt.

Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse took the lead in the first quarter of its game against U-BT Cluj-Napoca and then led the rest of the way, going on to win 79-88 at BTarena on Wednesday evening. Bourg improved to 7-3 with the victory, giving it a one-game lead at the top of the Group A standings in the 7DAYS EuroCup, while Cluj dropped to 3-7.

Jordan Floyd scored a team-high 16 points for Bourg, who also had Isiaha Mike and James Palmer contribute 12 points apiece. Frantz Massenat had 11 points, too. For Cluj, Patrick Richard finished with a game-high 20 points in the loss. The hosts also saw Leonardo Meindl, Andrija Stipanovic and Nemanja Gordic get into double figures with 17, 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Although Cluj got out to an early lead, Bourg stayed calm and soon turned things around in the latter stages of the first quarter, opening an 11-12 advantage late in the period. From there, Bourg never let its lead slip. Despite some impressive play by Cluj trio Patrick Richard, Leonardo Meindl and Emanuel Cate, who combined for 28 of Cluj's 35 points in the first half, Bourg was able to lead 35-38 at the break after having six players score 4 points or more, as Jordan Floyd led the way with 11. Cluj did all that it could to eat into that deficit, but Bourg was able to keep the hosts at arm's length, outscoring them 18-20 in the third quarter to enter the fourth quarter up 53-58. It was a similar story in the fourth, too, as the likes of Mike, Palmer and Massenat took over en route to a comfortable 79-88 victory.

Bourg extends lead at top of Group A with win at Cluj, 79-88

Frutti Extra Bursaspor got the new calendar year off to a great start with its best-ever offensive performance in the 7DAYS EuroCup, as it thrashed the visiting Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana 111-93 at Tofas Spor Salonu on Wednesday night. Bursaspor did not only set its single-game record in scoring, but it also made a record 18 three-pointers and tied its highest-ever mark with 28 assists.

Bursaspor never trailed in this game and led by more at least 13 points during the entire second half as it coasted to a comfortable win, which improved it to 6-4 record in Group A, while Cedevita remains in the last place with a 2-8 record. Onuralp Bitim scored 20 points and dished 6 assists to lead the hosts on the way to victory. Anthony Clemmons had 19 points, while David Dudzinski and Enes Taskiran scored 18 apiece. Also in double figures for points were Derek Needham with 13 and Yigitcan Saybir with 11. For the visitors, Yogi Ferrell had 23 points and 7 assists. Josh Adams finished with 20 points, with Amar Alibegovic adding 17, Edu Muric chipping in 15 and Alen Omic scoring 10.

Bursaspor came out on fire, with Clemmons, Bitim and Dudzinski all coming to the fore. Dudzinski had a dunk and a pair of triples to open a 15-4 lead early on. Two triples from Clemmons and one from Omer Utku Al opened a 26-10 advantage after just 7 minutes, and the lead was as big as 18 points before Alibegovic closed the first quarter with a triple to make it 30-15. Taskirin's added to Brusaspor's three-point tally early in the second, but Muric nailed one of his own before Ferrell hit 3 consecutive three-pointers to get the visitors within 38-31. A third three from Muric cut it to 40-34, but the hosts put together a 10-1 run to take a 56-41 lead into halftime.

The hosts needed just 2 minutes and 15 seconds at the start of the third quarter to put together a 10-2 spurt, capped by another triple from Dudzinski, making it a 22-point margin. Saybir's layup opened a 75-52 lead before Adams and Muric fueled a 2-10 run for the visitors. Bursaspor entered the fourth quarter up 80-64, but the visitors refused to go away, with Ferrell nailing one from long range and Omic scoring inside keeping their slim hopes alive. However, a jumper and a triple from Clemmons helped restore a 20-point lead, 95-75, midway through the fourth quarter. Bursaspor then closed it out, setting three club records in the process.

Prometey Slobozhanske rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys 72-80 at Cido Arena in Round 10 on Wednesday evening. Prometey improved to 6-4 in the standings and is now on a three-game winning streak. It also swept its season series against Lietkabekis, which dropped to 4-6 in the standings. Despite a slow start, Prometey trailed 24-12 after 10 minutes but ended up sealing the outcome before the final 2 minutes.

Caleb Agada led the winners with 19 points and 9 assists. Gian Clavell also added 19 points, while D.J. Stephens had 14 and Ondrej Balvin got 10. Jamel Mottis scored a team-high 15 points for Lietkabelis. For the hosts, Gyrogy Goloman added 13, Jamal Morris scored 12 and Vytenis Lipkevicius contributed 10. Goloman also had 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Morris and Goloman fueled a 9-0 run that allowed Lietkabelis to get an early 13-4 lead. Lipkevicius, Grantas Vasiliauskas and Mantas Rubstavicius each struck from downtown to boost the hosts' lead to 24-12 after 10 minutes. Stephens followed a triple with a wild alley-oop slam to give Prometey hope at 24-19. Morris hit a jumper, getting help from Lipkevicius and an unstoppable Goloman to restore a 34-25 Lietkabelis lead. Clavell and Stephens brought the guests as close as 34-33 at halftime.

Balvin capped a 0-15 run with a dunk that gave Prometey a 34-39 lead right after the break. Clavell buried a three-pointer and Stephens scored off a spin move to make the hosts call timeout at 38-46. Lietkabelis found a go-to guy in Lipkevicius, who brought his team within 45-48. James Dickey and Clavell kept Prometey ahead, 51-55, after 30 minutes. Stefan Peno banked in a close shot to make Lietkabelis regain a 62-61 lead with 6 minutes left. Clavell and Balvin each finished a three-point play in crunch time, then Dickey scored down low for a 69-75 score in the penultimate minute of the game, which was enough to seal the outcome.

With the return of 7DAYS EuroCup action in 2023, one player will surely try to replicate his form at the end of 2022 when he steps backs on the hardwood for Round 10.

Prometey Slobozhanske center [Ondrej Balvin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/ondrej-balvin/002644/), a 30-year old veteran of six EuroCup seasons, has been arguably the competition's hottest EuroCup player over the last three rounds.

Since Round 7, only one player has scored more than Balvin, who netted a total of 57 points for an average of 19.0 per game.

It is by far the best stretch of his 64-game EuroCup career. Balvin has either matched or beat his previous high of 16 points in each of those last three games, including a personal-best 23 and 18 points in wins over U-BT Cluj-Napoca and Umana Reyer Venice, respectively..

He has done all that scoring with remarkable accuracy, too.

Balvin has made an unbelievable 20 of 21 two-point shots and 2 of 2 three-pointers since Round 7, including runs of 15 consecutive two-pointers and 17 field goals without a miss beginning late in the first quarter of Round 7 game against Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse and extending until early in the second quarter of the Round 9 game against Reyer. 

What made his performance even more striking was that Balvin had averaged just 3.7 points while shooting 40.9% on two-pointers in the first six rounds of the season. But during this career-best stretch, more than Balvin's scoring has improved.

He has also averaged 7.3 rebounds, more than doubling his 3.5 per game until this point, and made more steals (4) in the last three rounds than in the previous six (3).

It all helped Balvin post an average PIR of 27.7 since Round 7. Only his teammate D.J. Kennedy has been better, with 29.3 per game, while third-placed Same Dekker of London Lions is well behind with 21.3 over the last three rounds.

Balvin hopes to continue his December form in the new calendar year, which Prometey (5-4) opens with a visit to 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys (4-5) in Group A on Wednesday.

With the return of the 7DAYS EuroCup this week, one game that certainly catches the eye is a meeting between two 5-4 teams, Umana Reyer Venice and ratiopharm Ulm, [at Palasport Taliercio on Wednesday night](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/umana-reyer-venice-ratiopharm-ulm/U2022/94/) (20:00 CET).

Ulm got the better of Reyer in Round 1, winning 81-80 at ratiopharm arena, with 19-year-old Fedor Zugic scoring 18 points and having a PIR of 22. The result came as a bit of a surprise, given the way in which the two teams had gone about their business in the offseason: Ulm placed its faith in a number of unproven youngsters, whereas Reyer prioritized EuroCup experience.

Yet, heading into the 10th round of the season, both Reyer and Ulm have the same record and share second spot in Group A. What's more, should Joventut Badalona and Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse both lose on the road at Germani Brescia and U-BT Cluj-Napoca, respectively, the winner of Wednesday's game between Reyer and Ulm would take a share of first place.

Although both teams have evolved since their Round 1 matchup, which was the closest game in the opening set of fixtures, they come into this contest after experiencing contrasting form prior to the two-week break in the EuroCup calendar. Reyer lost back-to-back games, having previously going on a five-game winning streak, whereas Ulm won two games in succession to enter the festive period on a high.

Interestingly, Reyer has a 3-2 record at home while Ulm boasts a 3-2 record on the road, which should result in both sets of players feeling confident in Venice. That said, in the five-game history between these two in the EuroCup, each game has been won by the home team, giving Reyer – in theory – the edge.

One player who will be particularly eager to shine on Wednesday night is Venice forward Derek Willis, who played for Ulm in the 2019-20 season. In Round 1 against his former team, he finished with 9 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 turnovers, so he will be eager to put things right this time around.

Aside from Willis, Ulm will also have to find a way to deal with the likes of backcourt duo Marco Spissu and Allerik Freeman, as well as Mitchell Watt in the paint. Perhaps worryingly for Ulm head coach Anton Gavel, Venice has a number of players who can come off the bench and make things happen, too, including Jayson Granger, Michael Bramos and Jeff Brooks.

Ulm, meanwhile, has seen its young players, like Yago Dos Santos (23 years old), Juan Nunez (18) and Karim Jallow (25), all show noticeable improvements as the season has progressed. However, since the arrival of 31-year-old guard Brandon Paul ahead of Round 8, it has had a cool head coming off the bench. In his two games since joining Ulm, both of which were wins, Paul has averaged 12.0 points. These four, in addition to fellow 31-year-old Robin Christen, will play key roles for the visitors.

It is hard to separate the two teams heading into their meeting on Wednesday, but it is worth bearing in mind that a tiebreaker could be won if Ulm does the double over Reyer, something that could come into play later in the season. Paris Basketball picked up right where it left off before the holiday break with a dominant 96-77 home victory over Turk Telekom Ankara on Tuesday - thanks to a balanced and efficient offense. Paris scored a season-high 96 points while dishing out a season-best 21 assists in beating Turk Telekom in Group B for a 7-3 mark. That performance came after Will Weaver’s team notched a season-best 93 points and 20 assists in beating London Lions 80-93 on December 21.

"It was a good win, a team win. We wanted to come in here and protect our home court and I think we did that. We showed what we can be capable of,” said Tyrone Wallace, who scored 16 points as one of seven players in double figures scoring.

Coach Weaver stressed that the balance on offense came from his team’s commitment to defense: "I am really proud of our identity defensively, just continuing to grow. When we commit ourselves to that side of the floor we end up with seven players in double digits,” said the coach, who watched his team reverse an 11-point deficit after the first quarter to lead by nine points at halftime.

Coming into the game of teams battling atop Group B, Turk Telekom had been ranked fourth in scoring at 85.9 points a game. Paris held the Turkish side 8.9 points below its average and even the 56.8% on two-pointers that Turk Telekom shot was below the team’s 60.2% average. And Paris stifled Turk Telekom’s long-range shooting as well - down from 39.9% coming into the game to just 25.0% in the French capital.

Turk Telekom came into the game having just played two nights earlier and beating Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion Anadolu Efes Istanbul 85-70 in the Turkish League. But Coach Erdem Can’s team was leading Group C with a 7-2 mark - having won seven of its last eight games since falling to Paris in Ankara in Round 1.

“They were on a roll, they are a good team. We got them at their place so we knew they would be here ready to play. We just needed to go out and match the energy and come out with the W,” Wallace said.

Weaver said he would not be surprised if Paris and Turk Telekom meet somewhere later in the post-season.

“Certainly we will celebrate this win tonight but I don’t think that’s the last time we will see these guys. That’s a very good team,” Weaver said.

But Paris Basketball showed once again that it is a very good team as well.
