Hamburg rolls past Trento 90-69

Hamburg pulled away for good in the third quarter to improve to 6-8 with its third victory in the last four games. Jaylon Brown paced Hamburg with 22 points, including 5 three-pointers, while Maik Kotsar amassed 14 points and 8 rebounds and Seth Hinrichs totalled 4 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Trento’s nightmare season continued with an 11th straight loss to fall to 1-14 despite Jordan Caroline scoring 21 points. Dominque Johnson added 11 points in the defeat.

Cameron Reynolds sank a jumper to open the scoring for the visitors, who struggled after that in the early going. Hamburg reeled off a 12-1 run with three-pointers from Robin Christen and Brown to lead 12-3. After being held more than 6 minutes without a basket, Jordan Caroline and Dominque Johnson went back-to-back from deep to pull within 12-9. Eddy Edigin scored 3 points at the other end and Hamburg led 15-10 after 10 minutes.

Johnathan Williams’s free throws were the first points of the second quarter and Johnson made it 17-14. Hamburg went on another run with Brown draining a pair of triples in a 10-2 surge to pull ahead 27-16. Brown added another three and Hamburg kept pushing with Osaro Rich contributing a three-point play and three-pointer and Caleb Homesley and Christen also hit from long range to make it 44-27. Andrea Mezzanotte countered with a three-pointer for the visitors and Caroline added 4 points. It was 48-36 at the break.

Bradford and Caroline scored to get the visitors within single digits, 49-40, in the early stages of the third quarter. Brown responded with another three-pointer and Kotsar scored three baskets to extend the lead to 58-43. The hosts did not slow down and Justus Hollatz’s three-pointer gave Hamburg a 71-52 cushion after 30 minutes.

 

Hollatz started the final frame with a layup as the lead grew to 73-52. Trento converted 6 free throws and the score was 75-58.  Hamburg kept hitting from the outside as Trevon Bluiett, Hollatz and Lukas Meisner drained three-pointers and the lead swelled to 86-60 with under 4 minutes to play. Trento did not get closer than 21 points the rest of way.

Turk Telekom Ankara recorded its first road win since mid-December by topping Lietkabelis Panevezys 75-77 at Cido Arena on Wednesday.

Turk Telekom improved to 7-8 in Group A while Lietkabelis dropped to 8-6. Both teams have already qualified for the EuroCup Playoffs. Samet Geyik led the winners with a career-high 32 points. Anthony Clemmons added 13 and Aubrey Dawkins scored 11 for Turk Telekom. Panagiotis Kalaitzakis paced Lietkabelis with 17 points and Gediminas Orelik and Djordje Gagic each scored 10 for the hosts. It all came down to the final minute, as Kalaitzakis tied the game with a three-pointer but Alex Perez's go-ahead jumper allowed the visitors to return to Ankara with a road victory. 

Clemmons got Turk Telekom going with a three-point play which Geyik followed with a jumper for a 0-5 lead. Vytenis Lipkevicius stepped up with a layup-and-one and erased Geyik's jumper with a layup. Gagic dunked, Dawkins and Orelik traded triples and Geyik followed a jumper with a jump hook to give the guests a 10-14 edge. Berk Demir scored around the basket, Geyik matched Gabrielus Maldunas's layup with a one-handed slam and Dawkins struck again from downtown, prompting the hosts to call timeout at 14-21. Kalaitzakis followed a backdoor layup with a triple, but Demir made it 19-24 after 10 minutes. 

 

Maldunas finished a third-chance Lietkabelis offense with a reverse layup and Dovydas Giedraitis added a three-point play to tie it at 25-25. Geyik kept pushing Turk Telekom, but Kristupas Zemaitis made a three-pointer off the dribble and Karolis Giedraitis also struck from beyond the arc to give Lietkabelis its first lead, 31-28. Turk Telekom kept running its offense through Geyik, who got help from Erdi Gulaslan to make it 35-39. Maldunas tried to change things with a reverse layup that brought Lietkabelis within 37-40 at halftime. 

 

Kalaitzakis buried a three-pointer right after the break. Geyik dunked again and Can Ogut struck from beyond the arc to give the visitors a 40-45 lead. Gagic stepped up with a dunk and Orelik added a floater, but Perez and Dawkins kept the visitors in charge, 44-49. Gagic scored again and Lipkevicius followed a turnaround jumper with a backdoor layup to restore a 50-49 Lietkabelis edge. Clemmons, Geyik and Dorukhan Engindeniz each buried one from downtown, after which the hosts called timeout at 52-58. Dovydas Giedraitis joined the three-point shootout and Demir answered with a tip-in to fix the score at 55-60 after 30 minutes. 

 

Clemmons scored around the basket early in the fourth quarter. Dovydas Giedraitis insisted from downtown and Zemaitis added a wild driving layup that brought Lietkabelis within 60-64. Orelik and Kalaitzakis each buried a three-pointer, giving the hosts a 66-64 lead with over 6 minutes left. Clemmons and Dawkins buried back-to-back triples off a Turk Telekom timeout and Geyik also struck from downtown to cap a 0-9 run, giving the visitors a 66-73 lead with over 3 minutes remaining. Kalaitzakis answered from beyond the arc and Gagic improved Geyik's mid-range jumper with a three-point play that gave Lietkabelis hope, 72-75, in the next-to-last minute. Kalaitzakis sank a three-pointer that tied it at 75-75 with 34.3 seconds left. Perez buried a baseline jumper with 6.3 seconds left and Kalaitzakis and Dovydas Giedraitis each missed a shot at the other end.

Round 17 came to a close on Wednesday night with five games in which Reyer advanced to the eighthfinals and Cedevita climbed in the standings.

Lietkabelis Panevezys hosts Turk Telekom Ankara on Wednesday trying to continue its home winning streak, while Turk Telekom will attempt to pick up only its second road win of the season.

Head-to-head: Lietkabelis vs. Turk Telekom

In Group A standings, Lietkabelis and Turk Telekom enter this Round 17 contest two wins apart, with Lietkabelis holding 8-5 record in fifth place while Turk Telekom is in fourth with 6-8 record.

It is a 180-degree turn of the situation after their round 8 contest, the one in which Turk Telekom pulled out a 65-60 home win. Turk Telekom was two win ahead of Lietkabelis at that point.

Since then, however, Lietkabelis has won five of its last seven games, while Turk Telekom has only two wins in that same span.

Despite very different record, the two sides had put up very similar numbers. Lietkabelis is averaging 78.7 points and 33.4 rebounds, compared to 76.4 points and 31.7 rebounds from Turk Telekom.

The side from the Turkish capital averages less than 1 assist fewer than Lietkabelis, despite ending up on the losing end in many more games over that same span.

However, a game at Cido Arena looks to be quite a challenge for Turk Telekom.

The reason is the success Lietkabelis has had on home floor, and the lack of the success Turk Telekom had away from home.

Lietkabelis enters this game on a six-game winning streak on home floor. The team has scored at least87 points in five of those games, and has won five game by 10 or more points, too.

In those game, Lietkabelis averages 87.7 points, makes an average of 12.3 triples on 43.5% accuracy, while dishing 19.8 assists. On average, Lietkabelis accumulates a PIR of exactly 100 during its winning streak.

Turk Telekom, on the other hand, averages only 71.4 points away from home, connecting on 32.8% from downtown. In addition, the team has lost six of those seven games, each by at least 9 points, and four games by at least 17 points.

Lietkabelis has plenty at stake, and needs a win that would put it on the verge of having home-court advantage in the playoff eighthfinals. Despite odds not being in its favor, Turk Telekom hopes for reversal of trends and a road victory that could do wonders for team's confidence.

Recent additions Tornike Shengelia and Daniel Hackett proved decisive for Segafredo Virtus Bologna and pushed the Italian champs to a hard-fought 70-68 victory against Gran Canaria.

Despite having played just three and two 7DAYS EuroCup games, respectively, so far with their new team, Hackett and Shengelia were the top scorers for Virtus against Group B leader Gran Canaria. What proved more important was when they provided that scoring.

When John Shurna nailed a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game at 62-60 with 3:10 remaining, Hackett and Shengelia took control and kept Virtus calm en route to a big home win. They combined for the last 8 points for their team to grab a 70-62 advantage entering the last 30 seconds that Gran Canaria could not recover from.

Hackett made a short jumper and a free throw for a 65-60 lead and Shengelia added a key three and added a couple of free throws to cap an 8-0 run that sent Gran Canaria to the ropes.

Virtus's plan when it picked up these two EuroLeague stars was that their talent and experience would help the team on its quest for EuroLeague glory and they came through in a big way on Tuesday.
