Shurna and Pustovyi shine

Gran Canaria outplayed Bursaspor in just about every facet of the game in the first three quarters. After 30 minutes of play, the visitors had a 20-point lead and for good reason. Gran Canaria made 20 of 30 two-point shots and 7 of 13 threes. It had 17 assists and committed just 6 turnovers in the first 30 minutes while picking up 10 steals.

Three quarters of dominance

The hosts, on the other hand, had 12 turnovers and just 3 steals after three quarters, while shooting 48.3% on two-pointers. Klepeisz has started the last two games for Ulm, both victories that needed extra sessions, and for the season he is averaging 9.5 points per game. The 30-year old has knocked down at least one three-pointer in each of the four games and has been an important contributor on the glass for Ulm with 4.8 rebounds.

Over the last three games, Klepeisz has been heavily involved in playmaking and dished 14 assists after not having a single helper in the season opener.

Ray, on the other hand, leads Promitheas in scoring with 13.3 points per game. He posted double-digits in scoring in each of his four games. Ray was especially productive in the last two games, collecting 16 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists in the loss against Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse and 14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists in the victory over Frutti Extra Bursaspor last week.

Like Klepeisz, who did not have a single assist in the season opener, Ray did not hit a three-pointer or grab a rebound in Round 1. Since then, he is shooting 7 for 16 from three-point range and has pulled down 20 rebounds in three games.

It is interesting that the two men have identical three-point shooting numbers, each going 7 for 18 so far. The two also have the same number of steals and have been contributing almost equally on the glass. As the first scoring option for the team, Ray is taking far more two-point shots than Klepeisz, while the Ulm guard is averaging more assists.

Now, the two players will be on the opposite sides, hoping their all-around contributions will help their respective teams build on their recent successes to tally another win in EuroCup action.

Gran Canaria led from start to finish in beating Frutti Extra Bursaspor 74-85 on Wednesday night. It is Gran Canaria's fourth consecutive win, which improved the team's record to 4-1 atop of Group B, while Bursaspor dropped to 2-3 on the season.

The visitors took control from the get-go and then used two big third-quarter runs to open a 20-point advantage. Bursaspor attempted a late rally, but never got closer than 9 points. John Shurna and Artem Pustovyi scored 20 apiece for Gran Canaria. Pustovyi also had 7 rebounds. Dylan Ennis netted 15, while A.J. Slaughter had 13 points and 6 assists. Allerik Freeman scored 17 points for the hosts, David Dudzinski collected 16 points and 7 rebounds, Andrew Andrews tallied 10 points and 8 assists and Kevarrius Hayes also scored 10 in a losing effort.

Ilimane Diop opened the game with a triple and a dunk. Derek Needham and Dylan Ennis traded triples before Dudzinski and Chris Kramer traded baskets multiple times. Kramer's driving layup, a long jumper from Slaughter and a floater from Ennis made it 11-22 as Gran Canaria's offense was clicking from the start. Andrews knocked down a pair of three-pointers late in the first quarter to help cut it to 19-26 after 10 minutes.

Shurna and Pustovyi combined to score the first 6 points of the second quarter for a 13-point lead. Allerik Freeman and Anthony Brown hit back-to-back jumpers for the hosts and Brown's transition triple made it 28-35. But Shurna got hot, nailing back-to-back three-pointers to restore a double-digit lead, 32-43. Metin Turen and Andrews helped the hosts cut it to 38-45 at halftime.

Bursaspor got within 43-45 at the start of the third after a put-back dunk from Hayes and a corner triple from Needham, but the visitors had another answer. Diop and Shurna hit mid-range jumpers before Slaughter and Shurna made back-to-back triples to help open a 47-57 lead. Gran Canaria followed that up by finishing the quarter with 12 unanswered points, a run fueled with a long-range dagger from Slaughter and capped by Pustovyi's 6 consecutive points to lead 49-69 at the end of the third quarter.

A basket from Miquel Salvo opened the fourth quarter. Dudzinski snapped a 0-14 run with a dunk and then had a put-back layup. A triple from Freeman made it 58-76 before 2 threes from Dudzinski got Bursaspor to 66-78 with 4:07 to go. An alley-oop dunk from Hayes and a layup from Freeman trimmed the deficit to single digits, 70-79 with 2:55 to go. But that's as close as Bursaspor got as Gran Canaria stopped the bleeding and closed the game out.

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica blasted Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana 91-60 in a battle between old rivals in the Montenegrin capital on Wednesday. Buducnost improved to 4-1 in the standings while Cedevita dropped to 2-3. Justin Cobbs led the winners with a career-high 33 points, Jacob Wiley added 15, Petar Popovic 13 and D.J. Seeley 10 for Buducnost. Melvin Ejim paced Cedevita with 14 points while Edo Muric added 10. Cobbs was unstoppable in the first half and Vladimir Micov buried a triple that made it a double-digit game, 39-29, near halftime. Cobbs buried 3 consecutive three-pointers and Seeley also struck from beyond the arc to break the game open, 61-43, and Buducnost controlled the game until the final buzzer.

Cobbs got Buducnost going with a three-point play before Jacob Pullen and Zach Auguste gave Cedevita a 3-4 lead. Popovic hit a baseline jumper and fed Zoran Nikolic for a dunk, but Auguste scored again and Muric added a layup-plus-foul for a 7-9 Cedevita edge. Popovic scored in penetration and Cobbs added a floater for an 11-9 Buducnost lead. Seeley and Cobbs stepped up for the hosts, but Ejim allowed the guests to regain the lead, 15-16. Filip Barovic hit a jump hook and Cobbs added a fastbreak layup for a 19-16 Buducnost lead after 10 minutes.



Popovic took over with a driving layup and Marko Jagodic-Kuridza added a close basket for a 23-16 Buducnost lead. Ziga Dimec and Luka Scuka ignited a 0-7 run that Marko Radovanovic capped with a triple for a 23-23 tie. Cobbs rescued Buducnost with 4 quick points and Popovic added a wild layup-plus-foul to put the hosts in charge, 30-27. Wiley dunked and a red-hot Popovic buried a jumper to make it 34-27. After Radovanovic and Marko Jagodic-Kuridza traded layups, Micov struck from beyond the arc to make it a double-digit game, 39-29. Micov buried his second three-pointer immediately after the break. Auguste and Jaka Blazic stepped up with dunks, but Cobbs and Popovic kept Buducnost way ahead, 49-37. Pullen and Muric each struck from beyond the arc, however, a red-hot Cobbs downed three consecutive shots from downtown to break the game open, 58-43. Seeley nailed a deep three-pointer, prompting Cedevita to call a much-needed timeout at 61-43. Micov soon added a put-back layup that Pullen erased with a floater to make it 63-45 after 30 minutes.

Cedevita needed a quick comeback to keep its options open, but Wiley opened the fourth quarter with a big dunk. Barovic added a jump hook and Suad Sehovic soon made it a 24-point lead. Seeley sank another three-pointer as Buducnost started to run the game clock down by using longer possessions. Cedevita kept trying but Buducnost had cruised to a well-deserved win.
