Hamburg Towers is the only newcomer to the 7DAYS EuroCup for the 2021-22 campaign. This is another step forward for a young club that was still competing in the German second division in 2019. Hamburg comes off its best season, which led to the German powerhouse's spot in the EuroCup and it will aim to make the most of this opportunity. The club was founded in February 2013 when former EuroCup star Pascal Roller and entrepreneur Wolfgang Sahm announced a plan to bring back professional basketball to Hamburg for the first time in over a decade. Hamburg started in the German second division, playing its first game against Giessen 46ers on September 29, 2014. It finished eighth that season with a 15-15 record and reached the playoffs, but lost against s.Oliver Baskets Wuerzburg in the quarterfinals. Hamburg remained in the German second division for the next four seasons and developed a strong youth structure. Everything clicked in 2018-19. With former player Marvin Willoughby as the team's sports director, Hamburg put together a competitive roster led by Beau Beech and Jannik Freese. It ranked fourth at the end of the regular season with a 19-11 record and defeated Rostock Seawolves, Niners Chemnitz and Nuernberg Falcons to win the German second division title and promotion to the country's elite. Hamburg had a rough German League debut, ranking last with a 3-17 record. However, the German League expanded to 18 teams for the 2020-21 season, and that allowed Hamburg to keep its place in the top flight. Last season the club brought in Pedro Calles, one of the best young coaches in Europe, and found the right chemistry with Maik-Kalev Kotsar, Kameron Taylor, T.J. Shorts and Jordan Swing. It all seemed to click as Hamburg beat ALBA Berlin and Brose Baskets twice, split victories with FC Bayern Munich and qualified to the playoffs after finishing the regular season ranked seventh overall with a 21-13 record. ALBA stood in its way to success, sweeping Hamburg in the best-of-five quarterfinals. Hamburg now makes its debut in European competition, taking its ambitious project to a new level. Expect Hamburg to continue growing, as it has taken the right steps to do so.
