Real Madrid has reached a new agreement with head coach Pablo Laso to extend his contract for two more years, until the end of the 2022-23 season, the club announced on Friday.
Real, Coach Laso together two more years
Laso, age 53, joined Real before the start of the 2011-12 season and has led the club to a new golden era. In 10 seasons with the club, Laso has led Real to six Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Fours, winning the competition in 2015 and 2018. He guided Real to two more EuroLeague Championship Games, in 2013 and 2014, losing against Olympiacos Piraeus and Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, respectively, the latter in overtime. Laso won the Aleksandar Gomelsky EuroLeague Coach of the Year award in 2015 and 2018, becoming one of its four multiple winners, along with Zeljko Obradovic, Ettore Messina and Dimitris Itoudis.
With Laso leading the team, Real has also won five Spanish League titles and six Spanish Copa del Rey crowns. They have also lifted the Spanish SuperCup trophy six times together and won the Intercontinental Cup title in 2015. Laso recently surpassed Lolo Sainz as the person who has coached the most games with Real. He has a 214-93 EuroLeague record (69.7%), all on the bench of the Spanish powerhouse. Laso also played for Real, winning the 1997 Saporta Cup title and reaching the 1996 EuroLeague Final Four. He remains the Spanish League's runaway all-time leader in assists (2,896) and steals (1,218).
