Shorter guards are enjoying a renaissance among the top tier of European basketball teams, and one of the two undefeated teams in the BKT EuroCup is being led by perhaps the next one to take the game by storm – Darius McGhee from Cosea JL Bourg-en-Bresse.

Shorter guards are enjoying a renaissance among the top tier of European basketball teams, and one of the two undefeated teams in the BKT EuroCup is being led by perhaps the next one to take the game by storm – [Darius McGhee](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/mcghee-darius/013859/) from [Cosea JL Bourg-en-Bresse](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/cosea-jl-bourg-en-bresse/bou/).

The American playmaker has helped the French team to a perfect 4-0 record in Group B of the EuroCup. And the main reason, he says, Bourg is succeeding is its balance. 

“We’re just super balanced. We’re connected, and we enjoy playing the game together. We enjoy all five people flying around on defense and executing things the right way and getting stops,” the 26-year-old told David Hein. 

"We really enjoy offensively playing the right way, sharing the ball. We enjoy when somebody else scores the ball as opposed to guys just focusing on scoring. It makes it fun, it makes it easy to play with, and it breeds confidence in one another.” 

McGhee leads Frederic Fauthoux’s side in scoring (18.0 PPG), assists (4.8 APG), steals (1.8 SPG) and PIR (18.2) all while shooting 63% on two-pointers and 46% on three-pointers. 

And McGhee’s growing comfort level with his new team can be seen by the fact that his assist-to-turnover numbers went from 10-to-9 in the first two games to 9-to-2 in the last two contests. 

“I would say an underrated thing about my game is manipulating coverages, using my strengths to understand how to keep pressure on defenses and putting them in a tough spot,” said McGhee, who is spending his second season in Europe.

McGhee arrived in Bourg from German side Telekom Baskets Bonn. And it shouldn’t be a surprise that he chose that club, since Bonn recently was home to two short guards – [Parker Jackson-Cartwright](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/parker-jackson-cartwright/011939/) and [TJ Shorts](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tj-shorts/012608/). Both were crowned MVP of the German League –  Jackson-Cartwright in 2022 and Shorts in 2023 –  while Shorts helped Bonn take first place in the regular season and win the Basketball Champions League in 2023. 

“My agent and others I trust spoke very highly of Bonn, \[they\] said it was a great opportunity. After meeting on Zoom and having conversations, I felt it was the right spot. The history behind Bonn and their small guards sealed it,” said McGhee, who stands 1.76 meters. “You always want to be in a position with a history of success.”

It took until college for McGhee to realize his fate as a shorter guard was sealed.

“As a kid, I was a Tracy McGrady fan. He’s like 6’8" (2.03 meters). For whatever reason, I thought I’d be 6'8" too. My parents would just laugh. I was always athletic and could jump, so I didn’t see size as a disadvantage. But in college, when everyone’s huge, that’s when it hit me. So I focused on making the game easier for myself, being efficient, not wasting energy,” said McGhee, who grew up in the town of Roxboro with about 8,000 residents. 

After two years of public high school in the North Carolina town, McGhee attended the all-boys boarding school Blue Ridge School. The campus runs from the ridgeline of the Blue Ridge Mountains down to the valley. And McGhee was even on the mountain biking team there. 

“It was very academic, a lot of discipline and structure. It narrowed my focus in basketball and accelerated the growing-up process for a teenager,” McGhee said. 

One of McGhee’s teammates in high school was [Aamir Simms](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/aamir-simms/011928/), who played three years in the EuroCup with Paris Basketball and Umana Reyer Venice and helped the school win a North Carolina state title. And [Mamadi Diakite](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mamadi-diakite/014027/) from Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz also attended Blue Ridge shortly before McGhee.

After finishing Blue Ridge, McGhee ended up attending nearby Liberty University, where he had a wildly successful career. He was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year three times – 2021 to 2023. He became the university’s leading all-time scorer, and on the same night also became the fourth Division I men's player to score 500 three-pointers in his career, along with Antoine Davis, [Fletcher Magee](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/fletcher-magee/012630/) and [Travis Bader](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/travis-bader/005689/). 

And the 162 three-pointers McGhee made during his senior season tied Stephen Curry’s NCAA single-season record set in 2008. 

“I’m a basketball fan before a player, so to be mentioned with Steph Curry, it’s something you can’t even fathom. I just appreciate the process. I think about how much my teammates sacrificed to make that happen – guys setting hard screens, taking hits. I’m always appreciative of that and proud to be in that conversation,” McGhee said.

That shooting ability allowed for McGhee to put up some pretty big numbers. He scored 48 points in a game during his junior year and had 43 points in a game during his senior season. Then last season he drained 10 three-pointers as he scored 44 points in a game for Bonn. Two games later he dropped 40 points with 12 three-pointers. And McGhee poured in 37 points in a BCL game last season as well. 

McGhee really hasn’t gone off like that yet this season with Bourg. He did knock down 6 three-pointers in scoring 22 points in the first EuroCup game against Dolomiti Energia Trento. But that is his season high in points. In fact, his top scoring output in the French League thus far is 13 points. 

“I’m just a very competitive guy. I never really care about how much I score or about scoring explosions. I’m so focused on the quality of the possession,” he explained. 

“That’s literally all my focus – each and every possession. Did we get the shot we wanted? Did we execute how we said we were going to execute? That’s what’s in my mind every single possession. It doesn’t matter if I take the shot or somebody else does. So that’s kind of how I judge it. If there are explosions, there are explosions. If not, that’s fine. I judge it based on the quality that we had as a whole, and if that leads us to success.”

And that is all that matters for Europe’s next big-name small guard.

He also grabbed 13 rebounds, dished 3 assists, recorded 2 blocks, and drew 5 fouls, adding up to a career-high PIR of 31.

[Chris Ledlum](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/christopher-ledlum/013968/) of ratiopharm ulm came close with a PIR of 30 in his team’s heartbreaking 99-102 loss to Besiktas GAIN Istanbul. Ledlum posted 25 points on 5-of-11 two-pointers, 3-of-5 three-pointers, and 6-of-9 free throws, along with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, and 7 fouls drawn.

[Karel Guzman](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/karel-guzman/011797/), also of Cluj, recorded a PIR of 29 in the same game against Reyer, contributing 17 points (2-of-3 two-pointers, 3-of-5 three-pointers, 4-of-5 free throws), 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 7 fouls drawn.

Rounding out the top performers were [Kameron McGusty](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/kameron-mcgusty/014111/) of the London Lions and [Retin Obasohan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/retin-obasohan/011938/) of BAXI Manresa. McGusty posted a PIR of 28, while Obasohan recorded a PIR of 26. McGusty contributed 20 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, and 6 drawn fouls in London’s narrow 67-68 victory over NINERS Chemnitz. Chris Ledlum of Ulm led the round in scoring with 25 points against Besiktas. Fatts Russell of Cluj continues to lead the competition overall with an average of 24.2 points per game.

Dusan Miletic of Cluj pulled down 13 rebounds in Round 4. Zacharie Perrin of Veolia Towers Hamburg remains the overall leader with an average of 10.8 rebounds per game.

Four players recorded 7 assists each this week: Lefteris Bochoridis of Aris, RJ Cole of Reyer, Rasheed Sulaimon of Buducnost VOLI Podgorica, and Arnas Velicka of Neptunas Klaipeda. Velicka leads the season overall with 8.2 assists per game.

Chris Horton of Reyer collected 6 steals in his game against Cluj, sharing the season-high mark with Dogus Ozdemiroglu of Turk Telekom Ankara. Velicka also leads in steals with 2.8 per game.

Jordan Parks of Reyer registered 3 blocks, the most in Round 4. Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu of Manresa remains the season leader in blocks at 1.8 per game.

Four players recorded double-doubles in Round 4: Reyer’s Chris Horton (13 points, 11 rebounds), Neptunas’s Martynas Pacevicius (10 points, 11 rebounds), and Cluj duo Dusan Miletic (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Karel Guzman (17 points, 10 rebounds).

Turk Telekom continues to turn the corner with convincing win over Trento

“Man, I love basketball. Period,” exclaimed [Jordan Usher](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/jordan-usher/013265/) on Wednesday night. “There’s nothing I love more than playing with good guys and good coaches. There’s nothing else I’d rather do in the world than play good basketball.”

The American forward’s enthusiasm was easy to understand. “I’m just happy our team is starting to turn it around,” Usher said. “We had a tough start to our season. Now it’s three wins in a row, and I’m hoping we can keep it going.”

Dolomiti Energia Trento-Turk Telekom Ankara | Round 4 Highlights | 2025-26 EuroCup

After opening its EuroCup campaign with losses to ratiopharm Ulm and Cosea JL Bourg-en-Bresse, Turk Telekom needed a quick reset. A narrow win over Buducnost VOLI Podgorica last week restored some confidence, and Erdem Can's side built on that momentum at the BTS Arena on Wednesday night.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing early on. Massimo Cancellieri’s Trento side opened the game on a 9–0 run, forcing Turk Telekom to regroup. It took the visitors nearly three minutes to score their first basket, but once they did, the offense began to click. By halftime, Turk Telekom had flipped the script and built a double-digit lead, eventually cruising to a 20-point win.

Usher’s all-around play stood out, but Turk Telekom's return to form can’t be attributed solely to him. [Michael Devoe](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/michael-jaden-devoe/013922/) led the way with 14 points, but they shared the offensive load brilliantly to get the job done as [Kyle Allman](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/kyle-allman/011924/), [Jaleen Smith](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/jaleen-smith/011192/) and [Kris Bankston](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/kris-bankston/012760/) also reached double figures. Turk Telekom dominated the rebounding battle and finished with more assists than Trento, an indicator of its improving chemistry on offense.

“We started without our principles,” admitted Coach Can. “We rushed in the first quarter and weren’t aggressive defensively, but we changed that. The key for us was our defensive aggressiveness. We responded in a great way. At the end of the day, I congratulate our team.”

For Trento, it was another frustrating night. After falling to the London Lions last week, it struggled again to find consistency, dropping to 1–3. Still, Cancellieri saw positives in his team’s performance.

“I can judge what we did for three and a half quarters,” the Italian coach said. “There was some solid basketball against a very good team that handles the ball well and puts pressure on you. This is another lesson, honestly. On one side, the glass is half-full; on the other, it’s half-empty. For me, it’s a step forward, not a step back.”

Despite the optimism, Trento will look to regroup on the road next Tuesday against Panionios Athens. Turk Telekom, meanwhile, will aim to extend its winning streak when it travels to London to face the Lions on Wednesday, October 29.

[Nike Sibande](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/nike-sibande/013889/)’s layup with 36 seconds remaining had given [NINERS Chemnitz](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/niners-chemnitz/nin/) a 67–64 lead, seemingly wrapping up a comeback win after trailing 38–50 midway through the third quarter. The German side had stormed back into contention thanks to a gritty fourth-quarter push.

[Kevin Yebo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/kevin-yebo/013368/)’s presence inside, a three-pointer from [Yordan Minchev](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/yordan-minchev/007423/) and another from [Ty Brewer](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/ty-brewer/013894/) powered a 12–2 run that swung the game in Chemnitz’s favor in the closing minutes. Capitalizing on London’s late-game mistakes – including two missed free throws and a blown dunk – the hosts took a 65–62 lead entering the final stretch.

Momentum was fully on Chemnitz’s side, but the Lions weren’t done yet.

Then came the game’s turning point.

[Corey Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/corey-davis-jr-/013890/) drove hard to the rim and got the shot off, but collided with [Deane Williams](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/deane-williams/014098/) on the landing, which resulted in him being whistled for an offensive foul. Since the call came after the shot, London was awarded free throws. Williams, who had been scoreless and hadn’t been to the line all game, calmly sank both shots with four seconds left to put the Lions ahead.

It marked London’s first road win of the 2025–26 BKT EuroCup season.

“Yeah, it was a thrilling win that went down to the wire,” said London head coach Tautvydas Sabonis. “Both teams competed very hard today. The last play went our way – we challenged, the ball was out, we got the offensive foul, and, you know, two free throws, and the game went our way.”

Fittingly, London’s win was clinched at the free-throw line, a place where the Lions have struggled. Entering Round 4, they were last in the EuroCup in free-throw percentage, hitting just 57.7% (30 of 52). Against Chemnitz, London improved to 65% (13 of 20). Not great, but enough.

Coach Sabonis's side also made strides on the defensive end. After giving up 86 and 99 points in its first two games, London has since held Trento to 71 and Chemnitz to just 67, despite nearly squandering a double-digit lead in the second half.

“I don’t want to become the Santa Claus team,” Sabonis joked. “We gave a lot of gifts, but my guys showed resilience. They fought back. We left them at 67 points at their home, where they’re normally an 87-point team. That shows our character on defense, and that’s how we win. That’s the way to compete – through defense. I’m very happy for my guys.”

Bourg thus reclaimed the bragging rights over Lietkabelis, as it now leads 4-3 in the overall meetings between the two sides, neither of which has been able to grind out a road win against the other.

The early stages of the game did not suggest that Bourg would run riot as Lietkabelis stood its ground in the first quarter, which finished with the teams tied 15-15 in the wake of a physical battle with defenses dominating.

However, Bourg pulled away in the second as [Antony Labanca](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/antony-labanca/005266/) caught fire and scored 15 of his game-high 18 points in the first half, nailing 5-of-6 three-pointers to engineer a 47-31 lead for the home team at the interval.

There was only going to be one outcome from there on, as player of the game [Yvann Mbaya](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/yvann-mbaya/013901/) toyed with his opponents to finish on 12 points and 5 boards, with [Darius McGhee](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/mcghee-darius/013859/) matching the big man’s scoring tally. [Assemian Moulare](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/assemian-moulare/010546/) added 13 points and garnished his sound all-round performance with a spectacular fourth quarter slam-dunk, when he left his marker for dead at the halfway line and then ripped through the paint to bend the rim with a vicious one-hander.

[Will McDowell-White](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/will-mcdowell-white/008062/) chipped in with 11 points to underline a smooth team effort, as Bourg sank an impressive 16 three-pointers from 30 attempts and racked up 35 boards. The hosts also dished out 21 assists against just 7 turnovers, having also managed 9 steals to leave Lietkabelis trailing in its wake.

“We stayed together and that’s it,” a delighted Mbaya said in his post-game comments. “When we do that, we are able to beat any team. When the fans are like that we can defeat just about anyone and we want to keep up the good work.”

Lietkabelis, which dropped to 1-3, always had a mountain to climb and among the four players who finished in double digits, [Augustine Rubit](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/augustine-rubit/006477/) stood out with 16 points. That, however, was not enough to keep Bourg at bay as the visitors managed a mere 8 of 23 from downtown and completed a mere 10 assists against 15 turnovers, a testament to Bourg’s ironclad defense and relentless hustle.

The home team’s head coach Frederic Fauthoux was also purring with delight after seeing his team rip Lietkabelis apart. “It’s a good win, we played very good defense,” he said “We excelled in our transition game and I am very happy for the victory but now we have to continue like this. Up next is Besiktas GAIN Istanbul on the road and they are probably the group favorites, perhaps the competition’s favorites.”

There is little doubt that Fauthoux will drum into his players’ heads that they need to keep their feet firmly on the ground as the Group B leader locks horns with second-placed Besiktas in what promises to be an enthralling top-of-the-table clash in Round 5.

But the next two rounds didn’t go as planned. After conceding over 100 points in a home loss to Dolomiti Energia Trento, Buducnost then managed just 72 points in a defeat away to Turk Telekom Ankara.

Desperate for a morale boost, Andrej Zakelj’s squad found an opportunity to reset against a struggling [Panionios Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/panionios-athens/nio/) – and they did just that, putting in a strong all-around performance to secure a 91–63 home win on Wednesday evening and even their record at 2–2.

“This win was more than necessary,” said head coach Andrej Zakelj in his post-game flash interview. “This is the most important thing. I think during most of the game, the energy was there, and the focus was there \[too\]. I’m satisfied with the approach, as it’s not easy to play under pressure.”

Buducnost came out sharp on both ends of the floor, building a 28–13 lead after the first quarter while shooting 11 for 18 from the field. The hosts set the tone early and caught fire from three-point range, finishing the first half at a red-hot 63.6% (7 for 11) from deep.

[Rasheed Sulaimon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/rasheed-sulaimon/011150/) led the way with a well-rounded first half: 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists. Defensively, Buducnost pressured Panionios into rushed perimeter shots, holding the Greek side to just 4-for-17 shooting from beyond the arc.

“The problem from the first minute was that we knew Buducnost play really tough, and we couldn’t react,” admitted Panionios head coach Chris Chougkaz after the game. “We couldn’t play the same way.”

Buducnost continued its dominance after the break, holding Panionios to just 10 points in the third quarter. [Axel Bouteille](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/axel-bouteille/003840/) led all scorers with 16 points in under 19 minutes of play, followed by [Fletcher Magee](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/fletcher-magee/012630/) with 15 and Sulaimon with 13.

“I think we played consistently on both sides – offense and defense – throughout the whole game,” said Bouteille post-game. “We started well, and we tried to keep that momentum going the whole way. That’s why we had the big lead at the end.”

Buducnost also set season highs in both rebounds (42) and assists (24). More importantly, every player who stepped on the court contributed with focus and energy, maintaining a much-needed level of consistency throughout.

“The picture we gave today was good,” Bouteille added. “Intensity, focus – everybody was on the same page on both sides of the court.”

Having snapped a two-game skid, Buducnost will now look to record back-to-back victories for the first time this season. The Montenegrin side heads to Lithuania next week to face Lietkabelis Panevezys, a team it has beaten in three of their last four meetings.

And if it can maintain the same consistency shown against Panionios, Buducnost may well come away with a second road win in the 2025–26 EuroCup campaign.

The matchup held extra weight, with both teams entering the night unbeaten. Their previous meeting in Istanbul had determined a quarterfinal spot in last season’s EuroCup. This time, Bahcesehir once again rose to the occasion.

Reflecting on the performance, head coach Marko Barac emphasized his team’s intensity and commitment: “It was a difficult game against a quality opponent. But except for the second quarter, I’ve got to say we played pretty good defense, and that fighting spirit was the reason for today’s win.”

“They're a great team. We respect them like any other opponent,” Williams said post-game. “We did some really good things; we’ve got some things to learn as well. But most importantly, we got the win.”

Both teams came out fast, attacking the paint and trading early baskets. Bahcesehir, however, maintained composure and found ways to sustain momentum. Its offensive versatility stood out, creating multiple scoring options and rhythm in half-court sets.

Depth also proved decisive. Bahcesehir's bench contributed 22 points, and scoring remained balanced throughout. [Tyler Cavanaugh](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/tyler-cavanaugh/009601/) led the team with 16 points, while [Caleb Homesley](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/caleb-homesley/011251/) added 15, the two combining for six three-pointers as Bahcesehir shot 30.8% from long range. “In the second quarter, there was a certain drop in concentration and energy,” Coach Barac admitted. “We let their best shooters receive the ball and take those shots. But outside of that, everything was pretty good. In the future, our shooting percentages will be even better.”

Cedevita matched Bahcesehir’s early pace, finding easy looks inside and scoring efficiently at the rim in the opening minutes. However, their struggles from beyond the arc limited offensive options, as the Slovenian side finished just 29.6% from three-point range.

[Aleksej Nikolic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/aleksej-nikolic/003703/) led Cedevita with 14 points, 4 assists, and a PIR of 16. Coach Zvezdan Mitrovic praised his team’s resilience despite the loss: “Congrats to my team who fought the whole 40 minutes. The result doesn’t matter – we didn’t give up. OK, in the end we lost some simple balls and finished more than 10 points behind, like all game. The better team won.”

In Round 5, Bahcesehir will look to extend its unbeaten run on the road against BAXI Manresa, while Cedevita will aim to bounce back at home against Neptunas Klaipeda.

It was a statement night for Molinar, who is in his first BKT EuroCup season and just the third Panamanian-born player in competition history. With Cluj’s star playmaker [Fatts Russell](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/daron-russell/013943/) having fouled out in the final minutes of regulation, Molinar stepped up when it mattered most – first to tie the game at the end of the fourth quarter, and then to win it in overtime.

Cluj looked to be in trouble late in regulation. After Russell fouled out in the penultimate minute, Reyer capitalized as [Kyle Wiltjer](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/kyle-wiltjer/008052/) and [Carl Wheatle](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/carl-wheatle/013305/) both hit shots from deep to erase Cluj’s lead and put the visitors ahead, 87-89.

But Molinar answered. He drew a foul and knocked down two free throws to tie the game at 89-89, sending the home crowd into a frenzy as the game headed to overtime.

In the extra period, both teams traded blows. With just 7.9 seconds remaining, [RJ Cole](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/rj-cole/013929/) put Reyer back in front, 101-102, with an off-balanced basket. Cluj called timeout and once again turned to Molinar.

The 24-year-old delivered. He drew another foul and calmly hit both free throws, giving Cluj the final 103–102 edge. Reyer had no time left to respond.

Molinar’s performance was historic. He joins [Ruben Douglas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/ruben-douglas/jju/) and [Ruben Garces](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/ruben-garces/jjq/) as the only Panamanian-born players in EuroCup history. Douglas famously led Dynamo Moscow to the 2006 title and hit the championship-winning shot for Fortitudo Bologna in the 2005 Italian League Finals. Garces, a teammate of Douglas at Valencia in 2007-08, helped the team reach the EuroCup Quarterfinals.

And yes – Iverson Molinar is named after NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson. After starring at Mississippi State alongside [DJ Stewart](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/dj-stewart/012700/) (now with Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana, Cluj’s next opponent), Molinar played in the G League, Mexico and Israel before arriving at Cluj for his EuroCup debut.

“Both teams could have won it,” Cluj’s head coach Mihai Silvasan said after the game. “We definitely missed Daron Russell in the end when he fouled out – he’s one of our main creators. But we stuck together, made some plays, and Iverson Molinar hit free throws twice in really important moments. We managed to take the win.”

Before Molinar reunites with Stewart, Cluj will aim for its third win of the season when it visits Veolia Towers Hamburg on Tuesday, October 28.

Aleksej Nikolic, Cedevita Olimpija: 'Consistency is what brings results'

One of the driving forces behind Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana’s perfect start in Group A has been [Aleksej Nikolic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/aleksej-nikolic/003703/). 

His team has racked up three straight wins ahead of a Round 4 showdown with fellow unbeaten side Bahcesehir College Istanbul. The game also serves as a rematch of last season’s BKT EuroCup quarterfinals. In his second season with Cedevita, Nikolic is averaging 18.0 points, shooting 47.1% from deep and 94.7% from the line, with 3.7 assists per game for a PIR of 18.3. 

In this interview with Euroleague.net's Javier Gancedo, he discusses the team’s momentum, DJ Stewart’s impact, three generations of Daneus in the club, and a certain celebrity fan — Luka Doncic — who still keeps tabs on his former team.

**Hello again, Aleksej. First, congratulations on a great start to the season. Let's talk about the game against Aris. What allowed you to play so well right away?**

"Defense! We believe in our defense. Coach is emphasizing that defense as the base of our game plan. And from defense, offense kind of flows in or let's say opens up as a consequence of good defenses. And that's how we approach every game. That's our mentality. We finished the game against Aris with a 16-2 scoring run and that is the perfect example, the perfect picture of what we want to do. We always try to impose our energy on the court. We believe we have a young, energetic team. In a way, we are using our strengths and taking advantage of it."

**Cedevita Olimpija has bounced back in the last couple of years. As a player who has been around for a while, what has Cedevita Olimpija changed to become competitive again?**

 

"I believe consistency is what brings results. I think I was mentioning that even last year, and I really strongly believe in that. It helps that we kept the coach for sure. It helps that it's four of us, but at least four of us stayed and the rest of the team was changed. But let's say a good mix of newcomers, and having players that already have experience with the coach and his system is for sure helpful to keep working in the way the coach wants and keep growing one practice and one game at a time. Again, I am coming back to the word 'consistency'. And we have to keep doing that."

 

**The club kept a core of local talents and foreign players who come and go. DJ Stewart is now the exception in his third year with Cedevita Olimpija. He is also playing really well. How important is DJ to this team?**

 

"He is almost like a domestic player, like you said. But him as a foreigner, to stay at Olimpija for the third year now, is great because he can be that bridge between the newcomers, foreigners and the whole club. So he's showing how comfortable he is here, and leading by example. That helps the newcomers to feel more comfortable, too. You can tell that DJ is his third year and that he is also enjoying his time in Ljubljana, of course. If you stay three years, there must be something good going on, right? He is playing really well and I believe he still can show us even more."

**How cool is it that you had three generations of Daneus in the club? Ivo Daneu was the first Slovenian basketball superstar, his son Jaka Daneu played a EuroLeague Final Four with Olimpija and Jaka's son Ziga Daneu is now one of your teammates.** 

 

"I don't want to say it is normal, but you know, we are a basketball nation. We love this sport and I think these kinds of things are beautiful to see them happening. You can also tell that basketball is a real passion in our country and then you can see that through generations of players. And the same goes for brothers. We have a lot of brothers that played in the national team and probably also in Olimpija. Like I said, it's pretty cool to see that basketball is kind of passed on in the family."

 

**Speaking of basketball families, yours is remarkable, too. Your Dad played basketball and your brother Mitja is still active after a long career. How competitive is everyone in your family?**

 

"We usually joke about it. It was kind of my destiny to play basketball. My father was a player, then became a coach, my brother also plays and has a big passion for basketball. And throughout all these years from the beginning of my career until now, I felt great support from all of them. I learned something from each of my family members and it is what keeps me going. Of course, we were always competitive when we would play games or something. Everybody tried to beat everyone, but I think even those moments made me and made us the family that we are today."

 

**Your brother is still playing and he is a bit older than you, too. Is it in the plans to play together at some point?**

 

"He is in a different, let's say, time zone of his career. I'm in a different one now but if it happens, we would be very happy, obviously. But we are not really too worried about it. Both of us are just trying to enjoy what we do, what we love the most, and that is just playing basketball."

**I have to ask you about Luka Doncic. You have played with him on the Slovenian national team for many years and he started his career with Olimpija. Knowing that he is a basketball freak, do you think he pays attention to the EuroCup and what Cedevita Olimpija is doing?**

 

"For sure, he follows. I won't say he's totally engaged, which is normal. He has his own rhythm, and it is different time zone. The NBA calendar is so packed that I think it's very difficult for him to be so engaged, but I believe he follows some of the games. And like you said, being a kid that played in Olimpija, I'm sure he is happy to see our good results."

 

**Up next, it is a clash between undefeated teams, as Cedevita visits Bahcesehir. How much are you looking forward to this? This is arguably the best fame you can see in the EuroCup right now...**

 

"Both teams are undefeated and want to extend their winning streak. It is also a rematch of last year's quarterfinals. We play in Istanbul, so the environment will be the same. But it's a new season, new beginnings for both clubs, in a way. But for sure, we are all looking forward to each game and won't treat it any different than others. We will prepare in the same way and be ready to play."

**You are still young, but have a lot of experience in many different countries. How does all that translate on the court? Is this the best moment of your career?**

 

"A lot of people ask me this question and I say 'yes, this is how I feel physically'. But I feel like most importantly, it's how I feel mentally. I try to really prepare for each game, to be focused each day, to try to improve and then consequently do that to help the team in any way possible. Most of all, I want to be really simple-minded. I'm really trying to enjoy every moment on the court. I love playing basketball, and everything that comes with the practices and the games, I let it all in and really take the best out of every situation that happens.

 

**Ljubljana is a basketball city and fans are always there at Stozice Arena in big games. What will it take to have a great season and to go to the higher stages of the competition? What's going to be important from now on after starting so well?**

 

"Well, I keep coming back to that word, but it's really something I truly believe in. It's consistency, to treat every day as an opportunity to get better, individually and as a team. We have players that are really hungry, really motivated to prove themselves and improve. We all have the same goal: if we make each other make, we make the team better. That's what we believe can help us grow a lot, and really to come each day ready to practice and then ready to play. If we do that, we will look at everything else as a consequence of this work. As far as fans, when they recognize that we fight, that we enjoy playing together on the court, that's when they love the team the most, no matter what's going on the court. And for that, let's say there's a kind of trade: we have the right approach to every game and fight. And in exchange, we know we will get their support."

Despite occasional struggles on the boards and on defense in the first half, the team kept its composure and secured an important win against Cedevita. Bahcesehir received solid contributions from its bench, with the team’s deep roster proving to be the key. Trevion Williams finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds, Tyler Cavanaugh added 16 points, and Caleb Homesley contributed 15 points and 6 assists. Malachi Flynn also chipped in with 12 points and 5 assists. Kameron McGusty answered with a tough basket to cut the deficit to one, and after an offensive foul was called on Corey Davis, Deane Williams hit two clutch free throws with four seconds left to secure the win. It marked London’s first road victory of the season and its second straight overall, improving to 2–2, while Chemnitz dropped to 1–3 with its second consecutive loss. McGusty led the Lions with 20 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds for a PIR of 28, followed by Joel Scott with 14 points. Kevin Yebo paced Chemnitz with 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Mike Sibande added 11 points and Ty Brewer chipped in 10 in the losing effort.

Augustine Rubit scored 16 points and Kristian Kullamae chipped in with 11 for the visitors. It was a see-saw battle early on and although Bourg dominated the offensive boards, Lietkabelis was able to hold its own thanks to Rubit who scored 6 points in the first quarter with the teams tied 15-15 after the opening 10 minutes. Bourg gained the upper hand in the second and romped into a 43-26 lead in the latter stages, as the home side hit a flurry of three-pointers. Labanca was red-hot from downtown and Bourg closed out the first half with a 47-31 advantage. Bourg kept up the good work in the third quarter and carved out a whopping 67-44 lead ahead of the final 10 minutes, keeping Lietkabelis well at bay thanks to ironclad defense. Bourg kept its foot on the gas in the fourth and closed out the contest comfortably to stay in pole position and keep its winning streak intact.

Turk Telekom fought off a stubborn Trento team at the BTS Arena on Wednesday night in a back-and-forth contest that finished 60-80. The Italian team came flying out of the gates, exploding into a 9-0 lead. The dominance didn’t last long, however; Turk Telekom eventually found the basket after 3 minutes and began to flow. The visitors fought back and the teams swapped leads for a while, before Erdem Can’s men turned it around, finishing the half with a double-digit advantage. Trento fought to stay in the clash, but ultimately the road team tightened its grip on the contest as it developed. Jordan Usher played a huge role in the 20-point victory, recording a stat line of 13 points, 7 boards and 3 assists. Michael Devoe led the way in scoring with 13, but they shared the offensive loads brilliantly to get the job done.  The result moves Turk Telekom to 2-2 for the season, while the Trento’s inconsistent season continues as it falls to 1-3.

Donatas Tarolis scored 20 points to pace seven Neptunas scorers in double figures with Rihards Lomazs scoring 16 points, Martynas Pacevicius collecting a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds and Arnas Velicka tallying 12 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Hamburg dropped to 0-4 as the only winless team left despite LJ Thorpe scoring 22 points with 4 rebounds and 4 assists and Eric Reed contributing 17 points.

Besiktas GAIN Istanbul claimed a 99-101 road win in Germany on Anthony Brown's buzzer-beater to end ratiopharm ulm’s unbeaten start to the season. The home team controlled much of the game, but Besiktas mounted a 14-point comeback in the final quarter, sparked by 3 crucial triples from Conor Morgan. 

Anthony Brown led Besiktas with 19 points and 4 assists, while Conor Morgan added 15 points. Ismael Kamagate also made his presence felt with 13 points and 8 rebounds. For ulm, Chris Ledlum delivered a big performance with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, Tobias Jensen contributed 14 points and 9 rebounds, and Christian Sengfelder also scored 14 points.

BAXI Manresa celebrated a 79-86 road win at Aris Thessaloniki Betsson and improved to 3-1 while the Greek side dropped to 2-2. Retin Obasohan paced the visitors on 20 points and Alfonso Plummer added 18, Agustin Ubal chipped in 13 points. Steve Enoch netted 19 for Aris.

Having pulled away to a 3-12 lead after Aris failed to score a field goal in the opening 5:26 minutes, Manresa carved out an 18-27 advantage at the end of the first quarter on the back of 9 points (3 of 3 from downtown) by Plummer. Aris then beefed up its defense and led for the first time, 36-34, midway through the second quarter but Manresa edged ahead 43-44 at halftime thanks to 9 offensive boards.<br>
It was a see-saw third quarter as Aris nosed ahead 51-48 and the lead changed hands several times again before Manresa forged a 64-66 advantage ahead of the final 10 minutes. A 2-13 run early in the fourth allowed the Spanish team to extend its lead to 66-79 and although Aris slashed the deficit to 77-83 in the home stretch, Manresa was able to close out the contest.

Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem made light work of Slask Wroclaw on Tuesday for an 86-69 victory at Ranko Zeravica Sports Hall in Belgrade, Serbia. Though Slask made a bright start, the hosts fought back and asserted their dominance by the end of the first quarter. 

Turnovers, missed free-throws and poor shot decisions haunted the visitors, while Jerusalem put on a highly professional performance, holding onto a sizeable lead for the majority of the contest and staving off a late run from the Polish team. Defense was the key for Yonatan Alon’s men, as they held Slask to under 70 on the night. 

Jared Harper played the starring role, recording a stat line of 20 points, and 4 assists. Khadeen Carrington, Anthony Lamb and Dmytro Skapintsev also reached double figures in scoring. Kadre Gray and Jakub Niziol scored 15 points apiece to lead Slask. With the victory, Jerusalem bounced back from consecutive defeats and the result moves both teams to 2-2 in their EuroCup campaigns.
