Jared Butler is Belgrade-bound after signing with Crvena Zvezda

Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade bolstered its backcourt with the addition of guard Jared Butler, the club announced on Thursday. The length of the contract has not been disclosed.

Butler (1.90 meters, 25 years old) arrives from the NBA, where he played for both the Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Wizards last season.

He averaged 9.0 points and 3.7 assists over 60 games between the two teams, including 11.5 points and 4.9 assists in 28 games with Philadelphia. 

Butler was a teammate of the Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv trio of Lonnie Walker, Oshae Brissett and Jeff Dowtin in Philadelphia and scored at least 20 points three times in that period, including a 26-point effort in January 2025.

A native of Louisiana, Butler played college basketball at Baylor University, where he helped lead the Bears to the NCAA championship in 2021 as wan named Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Final Four. He began his professional career with the Utah Jazz in 2021 and played one season for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

In total, Butler appeared in 148 NBA games over four seasons with four clubs. Butler also played in the G League with the Salt Lake City Stars, Grand Rapids Gold and Capital City Go-Go.

This marks Butler’s first taste of European basketball. He joins a Crvena Zvezda squad that is 3-2 in the EuroLeague, but 2-0 since Sasa Obradovic took the reins as head coach.

Despite seeing his team fall narrowly to Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv 92-91 at Aleksandar Nikolic Hall in Belgrade, Serbia, on Wednesday night, Real Madrid head coach Sergio Scariolo’s post-game reflections underscored a mixture of pride, frustration, and resolve as his team battled fiercely but ultimately came up just short.

Early in the contest, Madrid had the game firmly under control, but a costly “disconnection” in the final 5 minutes of the second quarter allowed Maccabi to surge ahead and take the lead.

"We were controlling the game and we ended up, even for little mistakes, going to the locker room with a 9-point disadvantage,” Scariolo noted.

Despite that setback, Madrid mounted an impressive comeback in the second half, with every player contributing.

“Everybody, basically, all those 10 players who played in the second half were putting their stone to that great comeback,” the coach said with commendation. The game swung dramatically in the closing minutes, with Real Madrid having chances to seal the win.

After Facundo Campazzo put Madrid ahead with free throws with 25.7 seconds left, Lonnie Walker missed a jumper for Maccabi and Mario Hezonja, who paced Madrid with 24 points and 9 rebounds on the night, corraled the rebound. However, Hezonja wound up on the floor and his shoulder touched the endline, resulting in a violation and another chance for Maccabi.

Tamir Blatt, who, according to Sacriolo, Madrid’s defenders “should never” lose contact with, created the space for the game-winning shot. Scariolo explained, “We had the rebound in our hands, we lost it and then we made a mistake on the out of bounds... little details.”

Despite the defeat, Scariolo said that he sees clear signs of progress, stressing, “I think we are definitely getting better. But still not enough to win again on the road. Let's learn from mistakes. Let's build over the good things we have done and move on to the next game.”

Campazzo echoed his coach’s sentiments, highlighting the fluctuations in momentum throughout the game. “We had a lot of ups and downs...both teams had chances to win it,” the playmaker said, emphasizing that errors by Madrid played a part in the narrow loss. “We’ll keep working through these losses, staying more united than ever, and focusing on the next one.”

While there is a great tradition of continuity at Real Madrid, half of the 12 players who dressed for this game joined the team over the summer, as did Scariolo, though this is not his first stint with the club. Moreover, three more holdovers - Sergio Llull, Andres Feliz and Bruno Fernando - missed the game due to injury.

A two-time champion, Campazzo has had a slow start to the campaign as he adjusts to a new coach and many new teammates. This was his best individual performance of the season so far with 14 points on 3-of-5 three-point shooting plus 5 assists. He made it clear that he feels Madrid is moving in the right direction.

Asked what the team must to do to get over the hump, Campazzo answered: “Keep building, keep believing in this process... It takes time. You have to be patient... We’ll take this feeling and use it as motivation to keep improving as a team.”

No team can be happy to lose a game like this one, but with leaders like Scariolo on the bench and Campazzo at the point, Real Madrid will make sure that the details that cost them dearly will serve as valuable lessons as the team continued to grow.

### Lonnie Walker's historic 10 minutes

The second quarter was all about Walker. The shooting guard erupted for 20 points – and in doing so became just the 11th player in EuroLeague history to score that many points in a single quarter. It was also the most points ever scored by any player in the second quarter of a game and the most of any Maccabi player in any quarter.

Walker made 4 three-pointers in the period, including one at the halftime buzzer. He also drew a foul shooting a three-pointer and made all of the resulting free throws, converted a traditional three-point play, and took a steal for a slam. With Walker dominating, Maccabi outscored Madrid 40-21 in the second frame to take a 9-point lead into the break.

Hezonja came alive in the third quarter to rally Madrid to within 74-76. He scored 9 points in the period, though it was [Theo Maledon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/theo-maledon/007027/) who shined with 7 in a 0-9 run to end the third.

When Garuba tied things with the first basket of the fourth quarter, it seemed that the wind was fully in Madrid's sails. Instead, Sorkin came to the fore with a pair of baskets in an 8-1 Maccabi run. Less than a week after coughing up a late lead against Olympiacos Piraeus, Maccabi again started to fade late.

### Tamir Blatt goes from zero to hero

Blatt missed a three and then [Trey Lyles](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/trey-lyles/014117/) tied the score from the line, 89-89, with 1:05 remaining. Then Walker missed a tough shot. Maccabi played good defense on the other end and forced a miss, but Blatt was called for a foul while boxing out [Facu Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/). The Argentinian playmaker made 2 from the line to give Madrid its first lead of the second half with 25.7 seconds remaining.

Walker pulled up early on the ensuing possession and missed, but Hezonja fell out of bounds after taking the rebound, giving Maccabi new life. This time, Blatt pulled up for a deep three with 4.3 seconds to go that would prove to be the game-winner, but only after Hezonja missed a very makeable shot on the final possession.

So remember Kattash's words about effort, character and luck. Maccabi checked all three boxes.

Thrilled with the victory, Walker was quick to point out after the game that he and his team still have plenty to work on.

"I know I've got to play better. I missed a couple of free throws," Walker said in starting his post-game interview. "But the overall game effort from not just myself, but from my team, I think we capitalized and we did a good job when we bounced back from our last game where we were up by 13 with 3 minutes left. We capitalized this time, so this is growth and we've still got room for improvement, so I'm really, really happy with today."

Kattash was quick to credit Walker not just for his second quarter, but for how he handled himself in the second half, when he only scored 4 points.

"Lonnie definitely gave an exceptional \[second\] quarter," Kattash said in the post-game press conference. "In the second half, he faced an athletic, aggressive team with good defenders, obviously trying to take the ball out of his hands, but he was no less responsible for many points we made through the defense guarding him. I think players got many easier shots because of the focus on him, so we took what he could give and credit to him that he made sure to put the players in good positions."

### Roman Sorkin stands tall in the paint

One of those players in good position was Sorkin. Despite matching up at times against [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/), the EuroLeague's all-time leader in blocks, Sorkin found good shots and made them. He showed his confidence early by attacking Tavares at the basket and drawing a foul. Sorkin shot 9 for 11 on two-pointers for the game.

Another was Brissett, who also played tough defense and was the finisher on a couple of fast-break buckets.

However, to sum up a game that saw two talented teams tied after 39 minutes, Kattash had the right words in the end: "I think Tamir with an amazing three-pointer and Hezonja with an uncharacteristic miss, that is the centimeter of luck you sometimes need."

Ellis (1.90 meters, 24 years old) joins the club from ALBA Berlin, where he averaged 22.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in two Basketball Champions League games, as well as 13.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists in three German League appearances.

This season is Ellis's first in Europe, having spent the 2024-25 campaign in the G League with the Stockton Kings and Indiana Mad Ants. The American guard previously suited up for the University of Memphis (2019-21) and University of Southern California (2021-24) before going pro.

Williams-Goss, Maodo Lo and Wright arrived to the team, which added to what they had already, they turned the team into one with higher level than in previous seasons. They are playing very good basketball. It is true that last week, with the EuroLeague's double round, they lost both games but they had won the previous three. The Williams-Goss-Francisco duo is very important for them because of what they generate, both for the team and for them as an individual level. They help each other really well on defense and with these two players, they have the ability to run the floor really well. Our roster is what it is and with Juan \[Nunez\] out long term, we have fewer players. I am taking playing time into account because it is a long season but the two players that play the most are on the floor for 24 minutes on average, in all competitions. Unless I am mistaken, Toko \[Shengelia\] and Will \[Clyburn\] play 24.3 minutes on average. All EuroLeague teams have players averaging that playing time or more. So far, we are doing well in that sense but we are worried about our injuries in such a long competition as this is. Zalgiris is a solid project, basketball is the number one sport in Lithuania and since they opened Zalgirio Arena, they are finding more financial resources. It is a solid project and it is incredible to play there, with that incredible support. Like I said, it is obvious that they took a step forward, financially speaking, to good players and add new ones. It is a deep, well-built team that is doing things well. The EuroLeague is fantastic, with great playing level and many teams able to win anybody."

**Juani Marcos, Barcelona guard**

"We knew the type of team Zalgiris is. They started the season with three consecutive wins and now had back-to-back losses, but they still are an intense, physical team with great players. They have been playing really well and we have to be ready, because we know how tough our opponent is. We have important absences \[Laprovittola, Brizuela\], backcourt players that give a lot to the team due to their talent and experience. It is on me to step up on their absences, so I will try to give my best and take more responsibilities, which is something that it is good for me in order to gain confidence and see more playing time in such a long season. What has surprised me the most about the EuroLeague is its playing level. This season, any team which anywhere against any opponent, it is being a very competitive league. We go against high-level teams with high-level players and great physical, tactical and technical preparation. This is one of the highest basketball levels in the world, and the best in Europe."

Samanic, 25, joined Baskonia at the end of December 2024 and made 20 EuroLeague appearances for the club. He played in all five of Baskonia's games to start this season, averaging 7.0 points and 2.6 rebounds.

Fantasy tips, Round 6: Unlimited trades, unlimited opportunities

It is a game-changing week in the [EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge](https://euroleaguefantasy.euroleaguebasketball.net/10) for two reasons.

First, there are unlimited trades for the first time since the season started. That's right – you can trade all 10 players and your coach if that is what you need. It is a perfect opportunity for a fresh start!

Second, Round 6 marks the start of the Trophy Cup, one of our new features this season. The top 128,000 teams at the end of Round 5 automatically qualified to this competition, which features 8,000 groups of 16 teams each, facing each other in head-to-head challenges. Only the Top 2 teams in each group and the best 384 third-place teams will advance to the knockout rounds, starting in Round 21.

Before I reveal my picks for this week, let's take a look at the players [Frankie Sachs](https://x.com/MrEuroleague) suggested for Rounds 4 and 5. Donatas Motiejunas of Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade earned 0.3 credits, playing really well in Round 4 (20.9) but not so well in Round 5 (3.3). Andreas Obst of FC Bayern Munich had a fantastic week, scoring over 16.0 fantasy points in both games, earning 0.7 credits. Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot of Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz earned 0.4 credits in the double round. Dan Oturu of Hapoel IBI Tel Aviv had a really solid Round 5 with 31.9 fantasy points. Even when he lost some value in Round 4, this was a good pick. Finally, Tomas Satoransky of FC Barcelona underperformed in Round 5 and that made fantasy managers lose 0.3 credits.

So I would say it is a record of 4-1 for Frankie. Well done! That puts a lot of pressure on me. Like Frankie, I am not recommending five players under 12.0 credits. Not looking for easy wins here.

EuroLeague Fantasy tips: Round 6

### Codi Miller-McIntyre, Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade (10.7 credits)

All of a sudden, Zvezda seems to be one of hottest teams in the EuroLeague. [Codi Miller-McIntyre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/codi-miller-mcintyre/009048/) has had to do a lot with that, especially after his stellar performance against Real Madrid with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and a PIR of 22. He is playing against his previous team, too, which always helps.

### Nate Reuvers, Valencia Basket (8.4 credits)

Valencia faces Milan, which is still without injured Josh Nebo and Zach LeDay. It could be a good opportunity for a good rebounder like [Nate Reuvers](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nathan-reuvers/012738/), who has been Valencia's X-factor until now. In Round 5, Reuvers collected his first double-double, getting 10 points and 10 rebounds against Monaco. A rock-solid player in good momentum.

### Tamir Blatt, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv (8.4 credits)

Maccabi hosts Real Madrid on Wednesday, and I can't stress enough how important it is to have at least one player from that game to get three captain options. [Tamir Blatt](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tamir-blatt/011193/) has had some solid games until now, getting a PIR of 20 in Round 3 against Hapoel and a PIR of 15 in Round 4 against Barca. A great, affordable option at guard.

### Isaac Bonga, Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade (9.7 credits)

You don't need to be James Naismith to predict an up-and-down, run-and-gun game between Partizan and Paris. That is the type of game in which [Isaac Bonga](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/isaac-bonga/006760/) fits perfectly. Bonga averaged a PIR of 15.0 in the opening three games and did not have the best double-round week, so he should be ready to deliver.

### Hamidou Diallo, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (11.6 credits)

It has been a rough week for Baskonia, which lost Markus Howard and Trent Forrest to injuries and is also without Rodions Kurucs, while it was without Luka Samanic this past weekend due to the flu. All things considered, [Hamidou Diallo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/hamidou-diallo/014086/) is a perfect fit for a physical game against Zvezda, averaging a PIR of 17.4 this season.

Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv held on for a thrilling 92-91 victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday at Aleksandar Nikolic Hall in Belgrade, Serbia, behind a game-winning three-pointer by Tamir Blatt with 4.3 seconds left. Mario Hezonja had a last-second shot to win it for Madrid, but missed.

Lonnie Walker, who set a club record with 20 points in the second quarter, finished with a career-high 27 for Maccabi, which improved to 2-4 with the victory. Roman Sorkin posted 21 points and 6 rebounds, Oshae Brissett scored 18 and Blatt totaled 12 points and 9 assists.

Hezonja paced Madrid with 24 points and 9 rebounds. Trey Lyles added 16 points, Facu Campazzo had 14 with 5 assists and Usman Garuba scored 12. The result left Madrid winless on the road this season and 3-3 overall.

ASVEL (1-4) will be desperate to banish a three-game losing run as it welcomes in-form Dubai (3-2). Fresh from stunning double round week victories over Fenerbahce and Barcelona, Dubai will look for more inside dominance from big men Mfiondu Kabengele and Filip Petrusev, who combined for 33 points and 21 rebounds in the win against Barca, so home team center Mbaye Ndiaye will need to deliver another solid performance after recording 11 points and 7 boards in last week's loss against Virtus. That game also confirmed that ASVEL has found a new offensive leader in the form of Glynn Watson (13.6 ppg.), who will try to outscore Dubai dynamo Dwayne Bacon (14.4 ppg.).

### [Hapoel IBI Tel Aviv vs. AS Monaco (20:05 CEST)](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2025-26/hapoel-ibi-tel-aviv-as-monaco/E2025/55/)

Co-leader Hapoel (4-1) will attempt to maintain that status with a visit from one of the chasing pack, Monaco (3-2). Hapoel was perfect on the road last week as big man Dan Oturu continued his strong form (14.2 ppg.,  6.0 rpg.), and he now faces a battle with Monaco center Daniel Theis, who has scored in double digits in every game this season. Matthew Strazel’s three-point shooting (53.3%) will be a threat to Hapoel’s defense, but Antonio Blakeney has been even more effective from deep (61.5%) and home team coach Dimitris Itoudis can boast the most productive offense in the league (93.8 ppg.) as he heads into his first coaching duel with Vassilis Spanoulis.

Two of the 10 teams currently tied for third place go into battle as Barcelona (3-2) welcomes Zalgiris (3-2). Both are seeking a return to winning ways, with Zalgiris losing twice in the two-round week. Barca also suffered a setback last time out with a loss at Dubai, and will hope key scorer Kevin Punter and Will Clyburn can return to form after respectively being held to 2 and 7 points in that game. Zalgiris struggled for an inside presence in its Round 5 home loss to Milan, making only 16 two-point shots at 44.4%. That was partly compensated by the three-point shooting of Arnas Butkevicius (6-of-7), and the Lithuanian team will also hope to continue the offensive rebounding, which yielded 17 second chances last time out.

Two teams struggling for consistency meet in Italy, where Milan (2-3) welcomes Valencia (2-3). The Spanish team was happy to welcome back rising star Jean Montero in last week’s loss at Monaco, when Nate Reuvers maintained his strong form with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Montero’s return will further boost a Valencia offense that already leads the league in assists with 21.2 per game, led by Omari Moore (5.0 apg.), but Milan boasts the competition’s stingiest defense with just 77.2 points allowed per game so will fancy its chances of slowing the visitors down. Offensively, Milan enjoyed a breakout game from EuroLeague rookie Quinn Ellis with 15 points to overcome Zalgiris last time out, so the Englishman will attempt to maintain those standards.

Former Baskonia star Codi Miller-McIntyre again showed his talent to lead the Zvezda in every department by combining 18 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists in last week’s impressive win over Real, and Chima Moneke will also look to continue his outstanding season (14.4 ppg., 7.0 rpg.) to pile more misery on his old team. His battle with Tadas Sedekerskis (9.0 ppg., 6.2 rpg.) will be crucial to the outcome.

The Istanbul derby will be staged on the European side of the city as Efes (2-3) welcomes Fenerbahce (2-3) to the Basketball Development Center. Efes will have to find solutions in the paint after big men Ercan Osmani and Georgios Papagiannis joined Vincent Poirier on the injury list, which could mean a debut for summer signing Brice Dessert. Fenerbahce’s offensive options have been significantly improved by the return to fitness of Scottie Wilbekin, who drained 4 triples in last week’s win over Bayern. He will take part in a shootout with Efes leader Shane Larkin, who has made 10 of his 16 three-point attempts in the last three games. Fener also possesses a deep threat in the frontcourt, with last week’s win featuring 5 triples from Finnish forward Mikael Jantunen.

Panathinaikos (4-1) will go in hunt of a fourth straight win with a tough trip to Virtus (3-2). The reigning league MVP is coming off a rare bad game, netting just 4 points in last week's win at Efes, when veteran Kostas Sloukas showed he can still control the offense by dishing 12 assists without a single turnover. The Greens will hope for another heavy scoring night from Cedi Osman after he poured in 29 points against Efes, while Virtus needs a strong performance in the paint from Saliou Niang (8.4 ppg., 5.8 rpg.).

Sasha Vezenkov and Nikola Milutinov both scored 23 points in last week’s dramatic comeback win over Maccabi, so minimizing their physical dominance will be a major challenge for the hosts. Kamar Baldwin is establishing himself as the leader of Bayern’s offense with averages of 11 points and 5 assists in the last two games and he’ll need to be better than ever on Friday.
