The Greens defeated the reigning champion on the road
EuroLeague 25 Moments: When Panathinaikos took Virtus’s crown in 2002
The 2002 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Championship Game will forever be remembered by the three-point shot Ibrahim Kutluay made to give Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens a decisive five-point lead against reigning champion Virtus Segafredo Bologna inside the last minute.
Virtus was playing on its home floor and had the hope of becoming back-to-back champs, but Zeljko Obradovic’s Panathinaikos stepped up late to secure an eventual 83-89 victory. That was the Greens’ first EuroLeague championship in the modern era.
Hear from Ibrahim Kutluay, Darryl Middleton, Zeljko Obradovic and Fragiskos Alvertis as they reflect on that famous 2002 title success in the latest episode of the EuroLeague 25 moments series.
