Bourg's title credentials were evident in win over Prometey

The fairytale story of Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse in this year's 7DAYS EuroCup saw another chapter written on Tuesday night, as the French team recorded a 92-85 overtime win against Prometey Slobozhanske at Ekinox to advance to 6-1 and remain atop the Group A standings.

It was by no means an easy win for Bourg and head coach Frederic Fauthoux's players, with Prometey making the team fight hard in a largely back-and-forth affair. Yet, Bourg showed a doggedness and a determination to grind out the result and grab the win – two qualities that will be key as it goes in search of glory in the EuroCup.

James Palmer had his third game in a row with at least 20 points, finishing with 23 after recording the same number in a road win at Joventut Badalona in Round 6. He has really come to the fore for Bourg in the last three games, and his performance on Tuesday night was vital in his team coming away with the win.

Another positive for Coach Fauthoux was the way in which Hugo Benitez and Frantz Massenat responded after a pair of so-so displays last week. In the case of Benitez, he played almost the same number of minutes between Rounds 6 and 7 – 21:19 and 22:17 minutes, respectively – but his output was far better against Prometey, finishing with a record-high 16 points, as well as 4 assists and 2 steals. In Badalona, the 21-year-old had 7 points, 2 assists and 1 steal.

Massenat, meanwhile, saw his minutes jump from 14:17 in Round 6 to 32:53 in Round 7; he could have played even more, but he fouled out with two minutes to go in overtime. The veteran guard scored his highest number of points this season with 17 and played an integral role in Tuesday's victory, scoring at important points of the game to help swing the momentum in Bourg's favor.

It was an off night for Jordan Floyd and Isiaha Mike, who scored 0 and 8 points, respectively, in more limited minutes than they are accustomed to. However, with other players on the team stepping up when needed, Bourg stayed on track with another important victory.

What's more, after suffering its first defeat of the season at home to Frutti Extra Bursaspor in Round 5, Bourg and Coach Fauthoux will be pleased to have got back to winning ways at Ekinox.

"This team is fantastic. It is a great victory, they never dropped their heads. It's a very good victory, a very good day for me," admitted Coach Fauthoux on what was his 50th birthday.

Ahead of a trip to face ratiopharm Ulm next week, Bourg can feel confident knowing that it has shown an assuredness and togetherness in its play – qualities that only the best teams tend to have. We are just seven rounds into the season, and there's still some way to go before the playoffs, but Bourg is refusing to go away in this year's EuroCup.
