Baron stepped up at his former home to help Milan grab much-needed win
Billy Baron exploded for a season-high 19 points on 5-of-10 three-point shooting as EA7 Emporio Armani Milan beat Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade 67-71 at Aleksandar Nikolic Hall on Thursday night to snap its nine-game losing streak. The 32-year-old shooting guard made several clutch shots for Milan, and he did so at the place where he used to call home.
Currently in his fourth season in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, and his first with Milan, Baron made his competition debut with Zvezda in 2o19-20. One year prior, he also represented the Serbian club in the 7DAYS EuroCup. Yet, Baron showed no interest in letting Zvezda walk away with its seventh straight win on Thursday, stepping up on several occasions to keep Milan in the driving seat.
At the end of the first quarter, having already made one three-pointer, Baron closed the first 10 minutes by scoring a triple with time expiring to put Milan ahead by 10 points, 16-26. In the following quarter, he scored a tough layup to make it 22-35 with 4:27 remaining, before once again ending the period with a big play. Baron kept one eye on the shot clock and then sent up a three-pointer, but he was fouled during the act of shooting by Zvezda center Filip Petrusev. He subsequently went 2-for-3 from the line to move up to 10 points for the game and open a 14-point advantage at the break, 29-43.
Baron made a three-pointer in the third to extend Milan's lead even further, 35-51, with 6:41 left, but it was in the final quarter of play where his influence was really felt. With 6:11 on the clock, Brandon Davies used a beautiful bounce pass to find Baron in the corner, which led to the Milan guard knocking down another triple to keep the visiting team's confidence high, 49-64.
Yet, Zvezda clawed its way back into the game and cut the gap to two points, 64-66, following a pair of made free throws by Petrusev with 1:19 remaining. The noise inside Aleksandar Nikolic Hall was deafening, but Baron kept his cool to find some space behind the three-point line and drain a triple with 59.3 seconds left, following a pass by Nicolo Melli. Baron celebrated with a 'calm down' gesture to the fans, although he admitted afterwards that he still has a lot of love for Zvezda's fans.
"I love this gym – this is one of the greatest gyms in the world, especially with this atmosphere. This is an extremely special place to play," said Baron in his post-game interview. "I love this club, so there's no hard feelings at the end [with the way he celebrated his three-pointer]. We'll move on and keep looking forward."
Baron missed Rounds 7 through 10 due to injury, and he found it hard to get going upon his return, finishing with 2 and 6 points against Cazoo Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz and Panathinaikos Athens, respectively, in Rounds 11 and 12. However, in this double-round week, he has really found his feet after scoring a combined 37 points in his last two games – 18 against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv on Tuesday night, and then 19 on Thursday at Zvezda.
Milan has finally managed to get the monkey off its back by winning for the first time since October 20, and should Baron keep up this fine scoring run when his team welcomes AS Monaco to Mediolanum Forum on December 23, it suddenly makes one of the most out-of-form teams in the EuroLeague a serious threat once again.
