Baskonia outlasts Real Madrid, 76-72



In an intense game that came down to the final seconds, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz edged Real Madrid 76-72 at Buesa Arena 3 on Tuesday. Baskonia improved to 2-1 in the standings while Real dropped to 1-2.
Markus Howard paced the winners with 15 points in less than 18 minutes and Chima Moneke added 14 points for Baskonia. Dzanan Musa led all scorers with 17 points, Walter Tavares posted 14 points and 15 rebounds, Mario Hezonja had 13 points while Gabriel Deck scored 11 for in defeat.
Tavares got Real going with consecutive dunks that Osumane Ndiaye erased with a put-back basket and a fadeaway jumper. Howard soon gave Baskonia its first lead, 7-4. Musa stepped up with a three-point play and Hezonja added a fadeaway jumper in a 0-7 run that Sergio Llull capped with a layup in transition. Howard struck from downtown and Trent Forrest matched Eli Ndiaye's block with a jumper. Hezonja took over with a driving layup that Forrest erased with a fastbreak dunk. Deck sank a corner three-pointer for a 16-18 Real lead after 10 minutes.
Serge Ibaka struck from beyond the arc early in the second quarter. Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot made a jump hook that Moneke bettered with a three-pointer to even things at 21-21. After Ibaka dunked, Forrest answered with a driving layup and Khalifa Diop's put-back slam prompted Real to call timeout at 25-23. Alberto Abalde and Luwawu-Cabarrot each scored in penetration and then Moneke hit a stop-and-pop triple in transition for a 30-25 Baskonia lead. Musa rescued Real with a fastbreak layup and Deck scored in transition in a 0-6 run that gave Los Blancos a 30-31 edge. Luwawu-Cabarrot and Kamar Baldwin each nailed three-pointers, but Tavares and Deck brought the visitors within 36-35 at halftime.
Tadas Sederkeskis bettered Musa's driving layup with a three-pointer soon after the break. Hezonja sank a wide open triple that Tavares followed with an alley-oop layup for a 39-42 Real lead. Diop followed a layup with a floater in a 7-0 run that Sedekerskis capped with his second triple for a 46-42 Baskonia lead. Llull answered from beyond the arc and Musa added an off-balance three-point play to give Real a 46-48 edge. Tavares dunked again and Deck added a backdoor layup that caused Baskonia to call timeout at 46-52. Luwawu-Cabarrot stepped up with a fastbreak layup to fix the score at 48-52 after 30 minutes.
Nikos Rogkavopoulos took over with a three-point play early in the fourth quarter and soon added a floater to put Baskonia in charge, 53-52. Xavier Rathan-Mates downed a triple, Deck added a fastbreak basket and Tavares dunked again, after which the hosts stopped the game at 53-59. Forrest stepped up with a layup, Musa and Howard each struck from beyond the arc and Moneke's layup made it 61-62. Howard bettered Musa's layup with a triple and Sedekerskis's floater gave Baskonia a 66-64 lead with over 3 minutes left. Hezonja struck from beyond the arc and sank another one to erase Moneke's triple. Diop sank a five-meter jumper for a 72-70 Baskonia lead with a minute left. Llull missed and Howard hit a baseline jumper with 15.3 seconds remaining. Tavares dunked and Real fouled Moneke with 10.2 seconds left. He hit both attempts and Llull missed twice from downtown seconds before the final buzzer.
