The Lithuanian enjoyed an impressive season with the Greens last year
Marius Grigonis, Panathinaikos together until 2027
Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens has announced that Marius Grigonis penned a contract extension last April that will see him remain at OAKA until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Grigonis (1.98 meters, 30 years old) had a really impressive bounce-back season in 2023-24, playing all 41 games as Panathinaikos ended its 13-year wait to win its seventh Turkish Airlines EuroLeague crown. The Lithuanian swingman averaged 9.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists for the Greens.
One of the few players to be retained at Panathinaikos after a disastrous 2022-23 season, Grigonis improved his numbers in scoring and rebounding in the campaign just gone. His importance to step up in key moments, such as when he hit a game-winning three at AS Monaco, saw him become a trusted member of Ergin Ataman's rotation.
Grigonis is now heading into his third year at Panathinaikos and his seventh EuroLeague campaign in total, having played for his hometown Zalgiris Kaunas between 2018 and 2021 before spending the 2021-22 season with CSKA Moscow. He also has one year's experience in the BKT EuroCup under his belt as he played for ALBA Berlin in the 2017-18 campaign.
Now that he has committed his future to Panathinaikos, Grigonis will be hoping to add more silverware to the club's trophy room. Coach Ataman has already gone back-to-back with Anadolu Efes Istanbul, doing so in 2021 and 2022, so he'll be looking to do the same with the Greens.
