## Thursday, January 22

### Anadolu Efes Istanbul vs. Olympiacos Piraeus (18:30 CET)

The action tips off with Efes (6-17) aiming to avoid an eighth straight loss as it welcomes in-form Olympiacos (14-8). Injury-hit Efes will continue to miss Jordan Loyd and Vincent Poirier, while Nikola Milutinov will be absent for the visitor after sustaining a head injury during Tuesday’s win over Maccabi – a triumph that took the Reds to three straight victories. Milutinov’s absence should see an increase in playing time for ex-Efes center Tyrique Jones, who made his Olympiacos debut earlier this week with 6 points in 7 minutes. The Turkish team pulled off a shock win in Piraeus in Round 4 behind 20 points from long-range shooting forward Cole Swider, and desperately needs someone to similarly step up and stop the rot on Thursday night.

### Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv vs. Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens (20:05 CET)

Maccabi (9-14) will look to boost its playoffs ambitions by overcoming Panathinaikos (14-9) in Tel Aviv. The home team is sweating on the fitness of Lonnie Walker, while captain John DiBartolomeo is definitely missing. Leading scorer Kendrick Nunn’s ongoing absence didn’t prevent Panathinaikos from comfortably overcoming Baskonia earlier this week, when summer signing Vassilis Toliopoulos marked his long-awaited return from injury by pouring in 21 points with 5 three-pointers. Maccabi also welcomed back a long-term injury absentee earlier this week, with Jeff Dowtin providing 15 points in the narrow loss at Olympiacos. The host will look for Roman Sorkin to set the tone by dominating his inside battle with Juancho Hernangomez, who has made multiple triples in three of the last four games.

### EA7 Emporio Armani Milan vs. Zalgiris Kaunas (20:30 CET)

Inconsistent Milan (11-12) will look to bounce back to winning ways and climb closer to the top ten by overcoming direct rival Zalgiris (13-10). Dynamic guard Leandro Bolmaro is a game-time decision for the host, which needs a major defensive improvement after allowing 106 points to lose in Madrid on Tuesday. Zalgiris arrives with plenty of confidence after taking an emphatic road win from ASVEL on Tuesday, when big man Moses Wright again demonstrated his inside power with 18 points and 7 rebounds. It’s truly a must-win matchup for Milan, which would love to also claim head-to-head advantage by taking its second win of the campaign over Zalgiris – Marko Guduric led the way with 14 points and 7 rebounds when the Italian team triumphed in Kaunas in Round 5.

### FC Bayern Munich vs. Valencia Basket (20:30 CET)

Valencia (15-8) will look to strengthen its top four challenge by completing perfect week with a win at Bayern (8-15). The host will hope to welcome back key guards Stefan Jovic and Andreas Obst after they missed Tuesday’s home loss to Partizan, which saw the German team desperately struggle offensively. There are no such problems for Valencia, which has a fully available roster and delivered a solid all-round performance to down Paris two days ago. Kam Taylor poured in a career-high 28 points in that game, while Neal Sako will hope to cause more carnage in the paint after grabbing 7 offensive boards. Bayern needs to match his physicality through fast-improving Wenyen Gabriel, who has recorded consecutive double-digit scoring nights for the first time this season.

### Real Madrid vs. AS Monaco (20:45 CET)

A big battle between two of the four teams tied for third place will see Real (15-8) seek another home win against Monaco (15-8). Los Blancos improved its record in Madrid to 11-1 by comfortably downing Milan on Tuesday, while Monaco will need to find fresh reserves of energy after a home overtime loss to Crvena Zvezda the same night. Real’s size and strength – epitomised by Walter Tavares – is reflected in league-leading stats in blocks (4.1 per game) and defensive rebounds (25.9), so visiting star Nikola Mirotic faces a major challenge in the paint against his former team. Monaco won an exciting meeting in December, 100-95, behind 22 points from Elie Okobo, and managed to snare 17 offensive rebounds on that occasion, so Real will look to recover its usual toughness as it targets the double prize of victory plus head-to-head advantage.

### Paris Basketball vs. Dubai Basketball (21:00 CET)

Paris (7-15) needs to boost its fading playoffs ambitions by overcoming direct rival Dubai (10-13). New signing Bruno Caboclo could make his debut to reinforce Dubai’s interior, while Dzanan Musa will continue his comeback after marking his first appearance since Round 3 with 5 points in Tuesday’s narrow loss at Barcelona. The battle for backcourt dominance will feature two players coming off great performances despite defeat: Paris playmaker Justin Robinson had 14 points and 9 assists at Valencia, while Dubai’s McKinley Wright drained 29 points on 11-of-15 field goal shooting in Barcelona – Wright’s 24 points were key to Dubai’s thrilling 90-89 win over Paris in November. The host will expect an immediate bounce back from Nadir Hifi, who only scored 8 points earlier this week.

## Friday, January 23

### Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul vs. Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (18:45 CET)

High-flying Fenerbahce (15-7) is looking to strengthen its position in the top four as it welcomes road strugglers Baskonia (8-15). The reigning champ will hope to welcome back Wade Baldwin and Brandon Boston after they missed Wednesday’s win at Virtus, while Baskonia is expected to be without long-range shooting threats Markus Howard and Markquis Nowell. Fener’s midweek victory – its sixth in seven games – came courtesy of a career night from Talen Horton-Tucker, netting 28 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting. But the hosts will continue to base its gameplan on the league’s stingiest defense, allowing just 79.8 points per game. That could spell a long night for Baskonia, which never really competed in a comprehensive loss at Panathinaikos on Tuesday despite Kobi Simmons maintaining his upturn in form with a third straight double-digit scoring night.

### Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade vs. Hapoel IBI Tel Aviv (20:30 CET)

Partizan (7-16) will attempt to continue its resurgence by upsetting league leader Hapoel (16-6) in a game taking place in Munich. The absence of Duane Washington, Shake Milton and Vanja Marinkovic did not prevent Partizan from grabbing a defensively-dominant victory at Bayern on Tuesday, and staying in the same city could help the Serbian team deliver a similarly strong performance to snap Hapoel’s three-game winning run. The visitor showed it can also rely on smothering defense by holding Efes to 66 points earlier this week, helped by Dan Oturu powering the paint with 8 points and 10 boards. Oturu will look to dominate Partizan’s recent signing Tonye Jekiri, who also grabbed 8 rebounds earlier this week, and this could well become a gruelling, physical encounter.

### Virtus Bologna vs. Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade (20:30 CET)

Crvena Zvezda (13-10) is targeting a second road win of the week as it travels for a key matchup with direct rival Virtus (11-12). The Serbian team will need to dig deep into its energy supplies after a hard-earned overtime win in Monaco on Tuesday, dominated by a big double-double from Ebuka Izundu (22 points, 12 boards). Zvezda also dished 29 assists in that win – orchestrated by 11 from Codi Miller-McIntyre – and will need similarly slick ball movement to unsettle a Virtus team which is coming off a narrow loss to Fenerbahce despite 35 points from Carsen Edwards. Head-to-head advantage is looming prominently over this contest, with Virtus needing a win of 2 points or more in regulation, after Zvezda edged the Round 17 matchup, 90-89, behind 20 points from the ever-dangerous Jordan Nwora.

### LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne vs. FC Barcelona (20:45 CET)

Lowly ASVEL (6-17) will attempt to climb away from the foot of the standings by upsetting Barcelona (15-8). The host will hope scoring star Glynn Watson can return from injury, while new signing Braian Angolo is set for his debut. Barca arrives with a sense of relief after escaping a tough test from Dubai on Tuesday thanks to a game-winner from red-hot Dario Brizuela, whose 25 points took his scoring average to 16.4 points over the last seven games. ASVEL has lost four straight but can look for inspiration from ex-Barca playmaker Thomas Heurtel, who netted a season-high 21 points in Tuesday’s defeat against Zalgiris. Barca ranks second in the league in steals (7.5 per game), with Kevin Punter in top ball-hawk form after grabbing 4 steals earlier this week.

Kasim had the following lineup: Sasha Vezenkov of Olympiacos Piraeus as team captain, then Zalgiris Kaunas duo of Sylvain Francisco and Moses Wright, Valencia Basket's Kameron Taylor and Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul's Talen Horton Tucker as his other starters. Seban Lee of Anadolu Efes Istanbul was his sixth man. The problem was that [Carsen Edwards](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/carsen-edwards/011987/) had the same idea.

The Virtus guard poured in 15 points in the first quarter and had 19 by halftime as the hosts built a 47-40 lead. But everything flipped after the break. Fenerbahce dialed up its championship-level defense, holding Virtus to just 33 second-half points and escaping with an 80-85 win.

It was only Virtus’s third home loss of the season at Virtus Arena, where it has looked nearly unbeatable. Horton-Tucker’s career-high 28 points – including a personal-best 4 made three-pointers – proved just enough to fend off Edwards, who finished with 35 points, one shy of his own career high.

“He had a great performance,” Horton-Tucker said of Edwards. “They’re a good team, well coached. They played hard the whole game and gave us a great test. At this point of the season, we’re just trying to scrap out wins.”

In his rookie EuroLeague season, the 25-year-old guard has become a phenomenon for the ease with which he gets downhill. Few players can match his strength or physicality attacking the rim. And if Horton-Tucker continues to grow as a perimeter threat – he has scored in double figures in nine straight games and is averaging 14.8 points per game – it’s hard to see how defenses can contain him.

Case in point: With the shot clock winding down late, Horton-Tucker calmly stepped left and buried a triple over [Saliou Niang](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/saliou-niang/012687/) with 23 seconds remaining, a sequence sure to haunt opposing coaches.

There’s more to his impact than scoring. Horton-Tucker’s basketball IQ allows him to punish help defense, regularly kicking out to open shooters when his drives draw multiple defenders. With Baldwin unavailable to organize the offense, Horton-Tucker’s aggressiveness in Bologna helped Fenerbahce control the tempo.

“Everybody’s helping him,” coach Saras Jasikevicius told EuroLeague TV. “We’re a team. I’m helping, the veteran players are helping him. It’s a process. Obviously, he’s doing really well. The best thing about him is there’s still so much room for improvement.”

Without Baldwin, Bonzie Colson, Brandon Boston Jr., new signing Chris Silva, Scottie Wilbekin and Arturs Zagars, it would have been easy for Fenerbahce to fold, especially after trailing by seven at halftime. Instead, the defending champions showed their resolve, starting on the defensive end.

Virtus went seven minutes and eight seconds without a field goal to open the third quarter and managed just 13 points in the period.

“It’s a great character win for our guys,” Jasikevicius said. “We’re extremely shorthanded, and a lot was going against us. Holding them to 33 points in the second half is a completely different picture than the first. When you play this type of defense, you’re going to make some shots.”

Scoreless at halftime, the 24-year-old erupted for 15 points after the break, including 10 in the fourth quarter, while also making his presence felt defensively.

“I was mad at myself, honestly,” Biberovic said. “I couldn’t deal with it, so I put all my anger into the second half. I started on defense and then the shots came. That was the story.”

Angola has been a well‑travelled and adaptable presence in Europe since leaving the G League in 2019, building a résumé that includes time with Oostende in Belgium, Partizan Belgrade in Serbia, Ironi Nes Ziona and Hapoel in Israel, AEK Athens in Greece, Gran Canaria in Spain and Turk Telekom, Galatasaray Istanbul and Pinar Karsiyaka in Turkiye.

Now, by joining ASVEL, Angola will play in the EuroLeague for the first time. He adds depth, shot‑creation and valuable experience on the wings for the French powerhouse, which recently lost star guard Nando De Colo, when he made a midseason move to Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul.

A shootout between Virtus Bologna’s Carsen Edwards and Fenerbahce’s Talen Horton-Tucker ended with the reigning champions grinding out an 80-85 win Wednesday night in Bologna. Edwards poured in 35 points in defeat – one shy of his career high – but Horton-Tucker’s career-best 28 proved decisive for a shorthanded Fenerbahce. Virtus led 47-40 at halftime, but Fenerbahce clamped down defensively in the third quarter, outscoring the hosts 13-25 to take a 60-65 lead into the fourth, where the teams scored 20 points apiece.

Playing without six rotation players, including starting point guard Wade Baldwin, Fenerbahce leaned heavily on Horton-Tucker, who also knocked down a career-high 4 three-pointers. Tarik Biberovic added all 15 of his points after halftime, while Nando De Colo chipped in 12. Edwards led all scorers with 35 for Virtus, with Derick Alston Jr. and Matt Morgan contributing 14 points each. The win lifted Fenerbahce to 15–7 on the season, while Virtus fell to 11–12, suffering just its third home loss of the campaign.

Olympiacos grabbed its sixth victory in seven games by defeating Maccabi 100-93 at Peace and Friendship Stadium on Tuesday evening. Sasha Vezenkov netted 15 first-quarter points, with the hosts taking a 27-24 lead after 10 minutes. Olympiacos went on a 20-0 run in the second quarter, with Evan Fournier bagging 12 points for a 58-34 advantage at halftime.

Maccabi fought back in the second half and trimmed the deficit to single digits in the fourth quarter, but Olympiacos was in control until the final whistle, hitting the 100-mark for the second game in a row. Having recorded its seventh straight victory against Maccabi, Olympiacos improved its record to 14-8. The visitors suffered their fourth consecutive loss on the road, dropping to 9-14.

Vezenkov led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field. Nikola Milutinov paired his 13 points with 9 rebounds and Fournier registered 12 points and 9 assists. Roman Sorkin paced Maccabi with 21 points and Jeff Dowtin netted 15 – of which 14 were scored in the second half.

After a hard-fought, physical showdown that came down to the final minute, Hapoel remained atop the standings by downing Anadolu Efes Istanbul 71-66 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Hapoel improved to 16-6 with its third consecutive victory. Meanwhile, Efes lost its seventh in a row and dropped to 6-17.  

Chris Jones led the winners with 16 points, Ish Wainright added 13 and Elijah Bryant scored 12 for Hapoel. Saben Lee netted 20 points for Efes, which led 35-45 early in the second half. PJ Dozier added 15 and Ercan Osmani had 10 for the visitors. With the game tied at 62-62, Chris Jones followed a fastbreak layup with a critical three-pointer that gave Hapoel a 67-63 lead with 24.4 seconds left. Jones added a pair of free throws to seal the outcome down the stretch.

Crvena Zvezda took down the hottest team in the EuroLeague by beating Monaco 96-100 in overtime, as Jordan Nwora – who was 0-for-4 from deep through four quarters – hit two three-pointers to start the extra session (92-96) before Nikola Kalinic put the icing on the cake with a fastbreak layup (93-100). On Sasa Obradovic’s first return to Monaco since being appointed Crvena Zvezda head coach in October, he was able to exact some revenge against his former employer. Donatas Motiejunas, on loan at Crvena Zvezda from Monaco, finished with 9 points.

The star man for the Serbian side, however, was Ebuka Izundu. In 21 minutes, the EuroLeague rookie posted the first double-double of his career with 22 points and 12 rebounds, good for a PIR of 36 – all of which are career highs. Nwora added 18 points in the victory, Semi Ojeleye poured in 16, Codi Miller-McIntyre paired 8 points with 11 assists, and Chima Moneke had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Monaco was led by the 19 points of Alpha Diallo, followed by Mike James with 14, Elie Okobo and Jaron Blossomgame with 13 apiece, and Nikola Mirotic with 10.

A couple of monster runs early in each half put Zalgiris out of sight as the Lithuanian side improved to 13-10 while ASVEL dropped to 6-17 after a fourth successive loss. Zalgiris opened the game with a 2-17 streak before the French team responded with a 12-0 run of their own, slashing the deficit to 41-45 at halftime. 

Driven by the unstoppable big man Moses Wright, Zalgiris romped to a 2-18 streak in the third quarter to take an unassailable 55-75 lead ahead of the final 10 minutes. Zalgiris hit top gear and coasted to 59-86 in the closing stages as ASVEL had no reply for the visiting team’s free-flowing offense garnished by a flurry of fast break.

Frenchman Sylvain Francisco paced the visitors with 20 points and 6 boards while Wright chipped in with 18 and 6. Azoulas Tubelis added 14 points as Zalgiris sank 25-of-35 from inside (71.4 percent). At the other end, Thomas Heurtel stood out for ASVEL with a game-high 21 points and 6 assists and Edwin Jackson scored 13.

Panathinaikos comfortably disposed of Baskonia on Tuesday at Telekom Center Athens. The 93-74 win moves the hosts to 14-9 for the season, while Baskonia slides to 8-15 as its two-game winning streak comes to an end. The Greens opened up a double-digit lead at the end of the opening quarter and never really looked back, swarming Baskonia on defense and punishing the visitors on the other end with confident shooting.

In the most compelling narrative of the night, Vassilis Toliopoulis led the way for Ergin Ataman’s men, adding 5 assists to his 21-point scoring performance. The breakout performance was particularly impressive, given his 1.5 point season average. Kostas Sloukas added 15 points for the winners, Richaun Holmes scored 12 and Alexandros Samodurov netted a career-high 11. Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot paced Baskonia with 17 points.

Cameron Payne led the winners with 16 points and 3 steals and Sterling Brown added 11 points for Partizan. Wenyen Gabriel paced Bayern with 13 points, Justinian Jessup scored 12 and Neno Dimitrijevic 10 for the hosts, who were without last-minute scratch Andreas Obst. It all came down to the final 4 minutes, in which Isaac Bonga and Tonye Jekiri stepped up to give Partizan a 58-67 lead already in the final minute. Bayern kept fighting but Partizan left Munich with the road victory.

Valencia got back to winning ways by overpowering Paris 98-84 at Roig Arena. The home team burst into an early double-digit advantage behind an electric Kam Taylor, and led by as many as 14 before Paris rallied to narrow the margin, 50-42, at halftime. A strong start to the third quarter looked like giving Valencia a comfortable win, and although Paris pulled it back to a single digit deficit inside the last few minutes there was never a serious threat of a comeback.

Taylor was outstanding throughout on his way to a career-high 28 points, while Neal Sako provided 12 points and 9 rebounds, and Jean Montero orchestrated the offense with 9 points and 8 assists. Paris was paced by 14 points and 9 assists from Justin Robinson, while Jeremy Morgan added 12. The win keeps Valencia near the top of the standings at 15-8, while Paris remains in the bottom half with a 7-15 record.

Barcelona blew a 12-point fourth quarter lead, but beat Dubai 91-89 at home thanks to Dario Brizuela’s game winner with 2.3 seconds to play. The Spanish side led 79-67 going into the final period but fell behind only to win it on Brizuela’s heroics. 

The win gives Barcelona a 15-8 record. including a 9-3 mark at home. Brizuela finished with 25 points and 4 assists while Kevin Punter had 20 points. Dubai has struggled all season to win away from home in falling to 10-13 overall and 2-10 on the road. McKinley Wright scored a career-high 29 points to go with 5 assists while Mfiondu Kabengele had 13 points.

Lyles scored a game-high 17 points and Mario Hezonja netted 13, with David Kramer bagging a career-high 12. "Maccabi is in good momentum. Offensively, they are one of the best teams in the EuroLeague. Defensively, they use a lot of tricks that often confuse the opponent and sometimes even themselves. So our players need to stay committed to the game plan. Offensively, they play in an unusual way, with a lot of short rolls: the centers stay on the perimeter, the power forwards move inside. \[Tamir\] Blatt’s playmaking is always important. Overall, they are a very distinctive and very dangerous team, especially given the good momentum they have with the way they play."

Valencia Basket play-caller Pedro Martinez made club history on Tuesday night, overtaking Miki Vukovic as the coach with the most games in charge of the Taronjas – and he marked the occasion in style with an important and convincing win over Paris Basketball, 98-84.

The Spanish side’s outstanding season had been in danger of stuttering after suffering consecutive defeats against AS Monaco and Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, so there was a fair degree of pressure on Martinez and his men as they prepared to face a dangerous Paris team which ranked second in the league in scoring.

Any nerves were settled very early on, though, as Valencia raced into a 15-2 lead in the opening three minutes and 20 seconds, propelled by a trio of players whose dominance would continue throughout the game: [Kam Taylor](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kameron-taylor/011217/) netted 6 of those early points, [Neal Sako](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/neal-sako/010545/) added 4, and [Jean Montero](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jean-montero/010042/) complemented 4 assists with a three-pointer that forced visiting coach Francesco Tabellini into a very early timeout.

The fast start set the tone for the rest of the game, which saw Valencia lead from start to finish and spend most of the game sitting pretty on a series of double-digit advantages. Paris never seriously threatened to get back into the game, even after the hosts lost a lot of their earlier rhythm in a fragmented second half mostly marked by free throws.

Taylor continued to shine as he finished with a career-high 28 points on 8-of-13 field goal shooting plus a perfect 10-of-10 from the foul line, ensuring that the outcome was effectively decided long before the final buzzer.

The home team’s intense defense also played a big part in that, too, especially with Paris sharpshooter [Nadir Hifi](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nadir-hifi/012640/) – the league’s leading scorer – restricted to a rare quiet night as he netted just 8 points, going 0-of-4 from beyond the three-point line.

Martinez underlined that all-round effort after the game, telling EuroLeague TV: “We played good defense for more time than not, and we played with good rhythm and good defense against Nadir \[Hifi\], who is one of the best players in Europe.”

The veteran coach, who is in his second spell with Valencia after returning to the East Coast club at the start of last season, received a commemorative framed jersey before the game, honoring his 232 games in charge of the team.

That tally takes him to the top of the club’s all-time list ahead of Vukovic, who coached Valencia between 1995 and 2000, winning the 1998 Spanish Cup and helping to establish the team as a serious player on the European stage.

In his usual understated manner, though, Martinez did not want to dwell for too long on his personal achievement as he said: “I’m very happy for this \[coaching record\] because surpassing a legend like Miki is an honor for me and I’m very happy to be coaching this club. But we need to live in the present, not the past or the future, and the present is another game on Thursday.”

That same message has obviously been drummed into Martinez’s players, because star performer Taylor also insisted his attention was turning immediately to Thursday’s trip to FC Bayern Munich, commenting: “We definitely needed this one and I’m proud of the way the guys came out and finished the game off.

“I’ll be happy for a couple of hours, but we’ve got another game in a couple of days against Munich, so the focus is on that.”

For the visitors it was another tough loss to take, leaving the French team six wins adrift of the playoff places with few signs of a sudden surge up the standings.

And Coach Tabellini was making no excuses, admitting the better team won as he said: “We have another game in 48 hours and we will get back, stick together, and play better basketball.

“Our opponents were outstanding. They had a tremendous performance from the beginning, and we were not able to match the level of intensity they showed from the first minute.”

Struggling to match Valencia’s intensity has been a recurring problem for teams across Europe this season, and much of the credit for that must go to Martinez’s coaching. On this occasion, whether he wants them or not, the headlines belong to him.
