There are not many EuroLeague teams that can boast one MVP on their roster, but [AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/mco/) will be able to count on two – Mike James and new addition [Nikola Mirotic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nikola-mirotic/000796/) – in the 2025-26 season.

Together with club president Alekszej Fedoricsev, general manager Oleksiy Yefimov, guard Matthew Strazel and forward Alpha Diallo, Mirotic was present for Monaco’s season-opening press conference at the Casino de Monte-Carlo and made it clear that he has joined the Monégasque team with one goal in mind.

“It's a pleasure to be here wearing this jersey,” Mirotic said. “First of all, because this team has ambition and big goals. When you see an organization building something special, you want to be part of it. At 34, I want to win. I hope to be the missing piece the team needs to win the title.

“We have two Euroleague MVPs on the team, but we're missing the most important thing: the EuroLeague trophy. That's why I'm here. I've worked for this, and sometimes it takes time to keep believing. You have to be in the right place at the right time, and Monaco could be that place. Just making it to the Final Four is a huge accomplishment that's difficult to achieve every year.”

Mirotic has reached the Final Four on six occasions (2011, 2013, 2014 with Real Madrid; 2022, 2023 and 2024 with FC Barcelona) but he is yet to lift the biggest prize of them all. Together with Mike James and co., he’ll be hoping that he can make history by bringing a first-ever EuroLeague championship to Monaco.

Sylvain Francisco led Zalgiris with 15 points, while Moses Wright contributed 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. On the Lions' side, Jonathan Williams topped the scoring with 17 points, and Kameron McGusty added 15. The Lions are set to return to the BKT EuroCup in the upcoming 2025–26 season. Zalgiris maintained control for most of the game, though the Lions narrowed the gap to 64–63 late in the fourth quarter. Deividas Sirvydis and Edgaras Ulanovas secured the win from the free-throw line.

Following the game, Zalgiris head coach Tomas Masiulis expressed gratitude to the Lithuanian fans who filled the stands, especially given it was an away game. “The atmosphere was amazing – we felt like we were at home. It was a real pleasure to play in front of such a large crowd,” said Masiulis. “There’s still a lot of work to be done before we reach our ideal form, but the most important thing is to keep progressing every day.”

The Italian guard spoke openly about his reasons for joining Baskonia, including the opportunity to reunite with head coach [Paolo Galbiati](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz/bas/galbiati-paolo/), whom he previously worked with during the 2021–22 season at Vanoli Cremona.

"Of course, knowing that Paolo would be the coach was a big plus for me," Spagnolo said. "But honestly, I had no doubts even before he was signed. I’ve always heard great things about Baskonia, and having worked with Paolo before only made the decision easier."

Spagnolo also shared a light-hearted anecdote about his arrival in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

"The first thing that happened when I went to the supermarket was that some kids asked me for a picture," he laughed. "From that moment, I realized how passionate the fans are here and how much the city loves basketball. Even though I’ve only been here a few days, I already feel like I’m working well with the team and the coach."

After averaging 8.5 points and 3.6 assists over 52 EuroLeague games with ALBA Berlin in the past two seasons, Spagnolo is now back in Spain – where his journey began with Real Madrid’s youth system – and is ready for a new chapter with Baskonia.

"I’m really happy to be here," he said. "I’ve been working hard because I want to win a lot of games and bring joy to the fans in Vitoria. I’ve always seen this as a place where people work the right way, and it feels like the perfect next step in my career."

Spagnolo described himself as a versatile player ready to contribute in multiple ways.

"I’ll play point guard or shooting guard – whatever the team needs. I can help in transition, in the pick-and-roll, attacking the rim, rebounding... I want to bring a lot of energy and do whatever it takes to help this team win."

Baskonia will tip off its EuroLeague season at home against Olympiacos Piraeus on September 30.

### A proven winner joins the squad

Clyburn arrives with a team-first mentality and a wealth of experience. He understands that individual stats take a backseat when playing for a top-tier club – a lesson he learned during his time at CSKA Moscow, where he played alongside stars like Milos Teodosic and Nando De Colo. Clyburn excelled in his role, stepping up when it mattered most and earning Final Four MVP honors in 2019 while leading CSKA to the EuroLeague title.

“I wouldn’t call myself a vocal leader. I’m more of a guy who leads by example,” Clyburn said in a recent interview with the club. “I’m a player who wants to win. I’m willing to sacrifice whatever it takes, and hopefully we can do the same thing here. I’m not coming in to take over—I just want to add to the team and help everybody out.”

### Chemistry that counts

Clyburn’s familiarity with Shengelia is another major asset. The two were teammates at CSKA for nearly three seasons and reunited at Virtus Bologna during the 2024–25 campaign. Together, they’ve reached the Final Four and lifted domestic trophies – including the Italian League title just a few months ago. Their bond off the court made Clyburn’s decision to join Barca even easier.

“Toko brings leadership and mental toughness to any team, before we even talk about basketball,” Clyburn said. “He’s a light in any situation. Honestly, he might be even better off the court. Our families are close—my kids talk about his kids, his kids talk about mine. It’s a strong connection.”

For now, Barca and Clyburn are embracing the underdog role, aiming to win enough games to silence the doubters. Clyburn is focused on contributing through his experience, energy, and skill set – ready to make his 10th consecutive EuroLeague season one to remember.

“I’m new here, but I’m bringing my energy, my spirit, and of course, my game. That’s what I’m known for… so get ready,” he said.

What going to Milan’s media day showed me…

Going to a media day is always exciting, particularly when it involves going to a club as historic and prestigious as [EA7 Emporio Armani Milan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ea7-emporio-armani-milan/mil/).

While this summer saw the high-profile departure of Nikola Mirotic, who joined AS Monaco after his contract expired, Milan has made six signings as it looks to return to the EuroLeague Playoffs for the first time since 2022 – and all six were present as they got their photos taken, engaged in interviews and took part in social media activities.

One thing that immediately stood out to me during the media day was the affection that [Zach LeDay](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/zach-leday/008987/) has from everyone at Milan – from his teammates to the coaching staff and other club employees. The 31-year-old was a leader for the Little Red Shoes on the floor last season, and Milan’s media day made it very evident that he is one of the leading voices in the locker room too, together with club captains [Giampaolo Ricci](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/giampaolo-ricci/001518/) and [Shavon Shields](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/shavon-shields/007831/).

If LeDay brings leadership, second-year guard [Armoni Brooks](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/armoni-brooks/013384/) brings humor. All throughout the first session, Brooks had a smile on his face and was a bundle of energy, which had a positive effect on his teammates. After a strong end to last season, the American shooting guard is primed for a strong Year 2.

Sticking in the backcourt, [Quinn Ellis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/quinn-ellis/012593/) – who [I interviewed for the EuroCup website](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/quinn-ellis-aquila-basket-trento-im-going-out-with-no-fear/) in December 2023 – was beaming from ear to ear as he took part in his first EuroLeague media day, having joined Milan this summer from EuroCup side Dolomiti Energia Trento. He admitted to me that he is excited about carving out a role in Milan’s rotation this season and that he’s enjoying his daily battles against [Lorenzo Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/lorenzo-brown/009622/) – another new signing – in practice.

Speaking of Brown, I came away so impressed with him. The 35-year-old point guard is coming off a year in which he loved living in Athens but struggled for regular game time under Ergin Ataman at Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, yet he was very level-headed when talking to me about the whole experience and believes that Milan has the right mix of experience, determination and youth to turn heads this season.

It was also great to meet [Vlatko Cancar](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/vlatko-cancar/005379/), who has been snakebitten with injuries over the last few years but is prepared to make his mark in his debut EuroLeague season. Coming from the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the Slovenian forward was incredibly friendly and mentioned to me that he’s spent this summer getting his body right as he looks to put his injury woes in the past. He already has one of the best nicknames on the team, too – “Chucky”!

Another player who could surprise some people this season is [Josh Nebo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/josh-nebo/011199/). EuroLeague fans won’t have to cast their minds back too far to remember Nebo dominating for Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv in the 2022-23 campaign, but last season felt like it never really got started for the 28-year-old. Still, Nebo – like Cancar – prioritized working on his body during the off-season and will be hoping to show Milan supporters what he can do in a new-look center tandem with [Devin Booker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/devin-booker/007056/), particularly with ex-Maccabi teammate Brown throwing up lobs.

Last but not least, there was [Marko Guduric](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/marko-guduric/004004/). Coming off a season in which he became a EuroLeague champion for the first time with Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, Guduric’s participation at EuroBasket 2025 meant he had not even had one training session with his new Milan teammates when I spoke to him, but he was keen to stress the importance of going step by step this season, starting with the semifinals of the Italian Super Cup (on September 27).

Now that media day is in the books, there are less than two weeks until Milan gets its EuroLeague campaign underway with back-to-back road games in Belgrade, first at Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade on September 30 and then at Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade on October 2. It will be too early to make any sweeping statements after these two games, but coach Ettore Messina will be hoping that his new-look team can put on a couple of good performances and send out a statement to the rest of the league in the process.

Finding a player beloved by both fans and media is rare in the EuroLeague, but Valencia Basket has one in Sergio De Larrea –  affectionately known as "Larry". 

Valencia fan-favorite Sergio De Larrea faces unique opportunity

Finding a player beloved by both fans and media is rare in the EuroLeague, but [Valencia Basket](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/valencia-basket/pam/) has one in [Sergio De Larrea](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sergio-de-larrea/010750/) – affectionately known as “Larry”. 

The 19-year-old point guard is set to begin his first full EuroLeague season as a member of Valencia’s senior squad. Though he’s already appeared in three EuroLeague games and played a key role in Valencia’s run to the BKT EuroCup Semifinals and Spanish League Finals last season, this year marks a new chapter.

So what makes Larry so special? To find out, Euroleague.net's Javier Gancedo headed to Roig Arena and asked him directly.

“The connection between players and fans, in my case, is something really beautiful,” Larry said. “Our fans always try to support and encourage me, and I’m very grateful. They’ve shown me love during tough times, and I know they’ll keep doing so.”

### Rising through the ranks

De Larrea is the first breakout star to emerge from L'Alqueria del Basket, Valencia’s elite youth academy. He joined the club in summer 2021, initially playing for the second team and in youth competitions. His talent quickly stood out in the NextGen tournaments – at NextGen Belgrade 2023, he averaged 13.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 3.0 steals across four games. He also made his EuroLeague debut in January 2023, appearing briefly against Anadolu Efes Istanbul.

His success extended to the international stage, where he helped Spain win silver at the 2022 U17 World Cup and gold at the 2023 U19 World Cup. At EuroBasket 2025, a wave of injuries gave Larry the chance to start for Spain, and he delivered – averaging 5.5 points and 4.4 assists.

“It was a great opportunity to learn from different situations and opponents,” he said. “I see it as a positive experience that helped me grow heading into this season.”

### Opportunity knocks again

With [Jean Montero](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jean-montero/010042/), [Xabi Lopez-Arostegui](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/xabi-lopez-arostegui/005356/) and [Brancou Badio](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/brancou-badio/007527/) sidelined due to injuries, De Larrea finds himself in a similar position. While he remains team-focused, he’s aware that increased minutes could be a turning point.

“It could be an opportunity, but it all comes down to hard work,” he said. “These situations happen, and you have to be ready. There’s always someone next in line, and we all have to keep showing the level we’ve reached in recent years.”

### Learning from the best

Standing tall and athletic, Larry draws comparisons to FC Barcelona’s [Tomas Satoransky](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tomas-satoransky/002939/). But when asked about role models, he quickly credits a former teammate.

“Last year, I learned a lot from [Stefan Jovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/stefan-jovic/004863/). We’re similar players and people, and he helped me a lot. He’s definitely one of my references.”

### A new era at Roig Arena

Larry embodies everything exciting about Valencia Basket right now. He’s a homegrown talent from L'Alqueria, chose to stay with the club despite NCAA and NBA interest, and now enters the EuroLeague spotlight as Valencia opens its new state-of-the-art Roig Arena.

“I’m really excited – it’s been a dream since I was a kid,” he said. “I debuted in the EuroLeague a couple of years ago, but this is different. Now I’m part of the squad, and I can’t wait to compete in such a high-level league.”

### Humble and hungry

Despite the buzz, De Larrea remains grounded. He knows the trust placed in him by the club and fans – and he’s determined to earn it.

“I play the way I know, and I think the team trusts me. I want to repay that confidence, but I also want to keep learning,” he said. “It’s not just young players who grow – everyone can improve. I’m lucky to learn from others and apply it every day.”

[Virtus Bologna](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/virtus-bologna/vir/) and EuroLeague fans watched on as Polonara beat testicular cancer just two years ago, having undergone surgery in October 2023 and returned to the court in mid-December of that same year, but this past June saw him diagnosed with myeloid leukemia. Another big fight lies ahead for the Italian forward.

Speaking [in an interview with Corriere di Bologna](https://corrieredibologna.corriere.it/notizie/cronaca/25_settembre_15/achille-polonara-faccio-il-trapianto-di-midollo-osseo-trovata-una-ragazza-americana-compatibile-mia-figlia-chiede-perche-ho-600b4365-03bc-47b5-906a-c01f0783fxlk.shtml), Polonara offered some positive news on his current condition and explained why he left Virtus on good terms this summer.

“I'm fine. I spent the weekend with my children because I won't be able to see them for a while and they'll be staying with their grandparents,” he said. “On Monday, September 15 I'll have some tests for the bone marrow transplant, then on Tuesday I'll be admitted to hospital.”

Polonara revealed that a donor has been found and that a date for the transplant has already been set.

“Yes, it's an American girl who is 90% compatible. I was lucky, there were two donors who were 90% compatible, including a German guy, but they opted for her because they were able to get in touch with her right away,” he explained. “After I'm admitted tomorrow, I'll have to undergo a course of chemotherapy that will last 5-6 days. The transplant should take place around September 23-24.”

One of the heartwarming elements of Polonara’s fight against cancer has been the way in which the basketball community has come together to show their support for him, while his wife, Erika, has been a constant presence throughout the process.

“There have been tough times, but the affection shown by so many people has helped me to stay positive and look ahead with optimism,” he said. “I've received lots of messages and phone calls, from the world of basketball and beyond, and my wife and children have given me the strength to look ahead with positivity.

“\[Erika\] chose to stay by my side even though the children had to stay with their grandparents and we both missed them. ‘You need me, they're still young,’ she told me.”

Polonara has also been able to count on his close friend and former teammate [Marco Belinelli](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/marco-belinelli/bcn/), as well as Italian national team head coach Gianmarco Pozzecco and his ex-teammates with the Azzurri, who called him several times during the recent EuroBasket 2025 tournament as they looked to bring him along for the journey.

“Belinelli has been very close to me; we've been in touch every day,” he said. “Then my teammates on the national team and Pozzecco have shown me enormous affection with their calls before games. Half an hour before an important game, you don't expect a call from the locker room.”

Some fans at EuroBasket 2025 also brought along messages to show their affection for Polonara, with one Greek fan having a banner dedicated to the 33-year-old.

“Even though I've never played there, the Greek people have been very kind to me on social media,” he said. “They've supported me a lot and I really appreciate it.”

With Polonara’s contract at Virtus expiring in the summer of 2025, his most recent cancer diagnosis meant his future was up in the air and it was eventually decided upon that the two should part ways. As such, he has penned a three-year deal to return to Dinamo Sassari, where he played from 2017 until 2019, his final step before making his EuroLeague debut.

"I accepted Virtus's decision and appreciated their consistency, because I wasn't part of their plans regardless of my illness,” he said. “Honestly, I would have felt offended if they had re-signed me just to make a nice gesture because I have leukemia. I preferred Sassari's offer because my dream is to try to play again. If I had accepted a role as a scout, it would have meant quitting, but this way I have the goal of passing the medical exams and returning to the court."

Polonara was unable to be with his Virtus teammates as they went on to lift the Italian League championship for the first time since 2020-21, with his illness being discovered during the Italian League Finals, but Belinelli, [Toko Shengelia](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tornike-shengelia/001133/) and [Alessandro Pajola](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/alessandro-pajola/006739/) made sure to bring the trophy to the hospital so that he could be a part of the celebrations.

"The best memory of the final is when the whole team and staff came to my house once they found out about my illness,” he remembered. “I wanted to hug them one by one, but it wasn't possible. I waited for those games anxiously as if I had to play myself. I was pumped and excited. After the Game 3 victory in Brescia, there was a video call from Shengelia from the court, then celebrations with the fans, and the next day the trophy in the hospital. Beautiful moments."

It seems Polonara’s EuroLeague journey has come to an end after six seasons, but the EuroLeague family will never leave his side. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery and that we see you on the court soon, Achille.
