Things are definitely different for *Los Blancos* at WiZink Center this season.

Real is 0-5 on the road this season. For comparison, the team only lost four regular season road games last season. On the other hand, Real is 4-0 at home and playing really well. Against Virtus, Real played a strong game with great accuracy, focus and outstanding ball circulation.

*Los Blancos* shot the ball well, making 62.7% of all shots inside the arc and 42.9% from downtown. It outrebounded Virtus 39-26, getting 27 defensive rebounds and only allowing Virtus to grab 6 offensive boards. In other words, Real grabbed 81.8% of all rebounds under its rim. Virtus only got 62.5% of all rebounds under its basket.

Real finished the game with 24 assists and just 9 turnovers. [Facu Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/) made it happen, getting 9 assists with 0 turnovers and amassing a PIR of 27 in less than 24 games. Campazzo's assist-to-turnover ratio is downright outstanding at home. In four games, he's dished 32 assists and picked up just 3 turnovers for a ratio of 10.67. On the road, Campazzo had 29 assists and 12 turnovers, a ratio of 2.42, which is great but much lower than at WiZink Center.

Campazzo gives master class against Virtus

"I think we played with more hustle on defense, and I think that when we worry about our defense, \[we get\] open shots on offense and are more fluid in the game, and even more focused," Campazzo said after the game. "We have to handle that, to try to play better away, because if we only win the game, we won't get anything. We have to improve in our away games, and I think that is going to be our main goal."

Indeed, Real was able to run the floor, used its size advantage in the paint and that led to a well-balanced offense. As many as five players scored in double digits, led by [Mario Hezonja](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/mario-hezonja/003108/)'s season-high 20 points. [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/) and [Serge Ibaka](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/serge-ibaka/003583/) combined for 25 points on 7 of 13 two-pointers. [Xavier Rathan-Mayes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/xavier-rathan-mayes/013378/) provided the fireworks from downtown, hitting 5 three-pointers on his way to a career-high 17 points.

Asked about Real's differences at home and on the road, Hezonja was crystal clear. He seems to have identified his team's problem and it is a question of working on it.

"Defense. The tenacity that we had defensively, starting to take care of business defensively when there was time. In many of these road games, we wanted to make that push but it was just not possible, we were not doing it. So we need to really focus on that side to get stops, to get easy rebounds, and that pushes our offensive game, and it is much easier to play."

Olympiacos BC and LDLC ASVEL showed in Round 9 why the EuroLeague is the most competitive basketball league on the planet.

Tuesday’s clash between [Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/roster/oly/?season=2024-25) and [LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ldlc-asvel-villeurbanne/roster/asv/?season=2024-25) could serve as the perfect example why every game matters in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. 

On one side was an Olympiacos team coming into the duel on the back of three straight victories against powerhouses Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens. On the other was an ASVEL side missing leader [Nando De Colo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nando-de-colo/002100/) and the league’s top rebounder, [Neal Sako](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/neal-sako/010545/) (8.5 rpg). The visitors sat second bottom in the standings (2-6), having gone on a four-game losing streak coming into the game in Piraeus.

Yet, it was the guests that hit the ground running at Peace and Friendship Stadium and forced Olympiacos to trail for the majority of the game. [Evan Fournier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/evan-fournier/013380/) opened the scoring in transition and [Sasha Vezenkov](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/sasha-vezenkov/003469/) made it 4-2, but a triple from [David Lighty ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/david-lighty/003526/)gave ASVEL a lead that it maintained until there was just 2:24 left on the clock in the closing quarter. 

That's when [Thomas Walkup](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/thomas-walkup/008855/) drilled one from deep to put Olympiacos ahead, 87-86, and the hosts never looked back, clinching the victory despite an extraordinary performance by [Theo Maledon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/theo-maledon/007027/), who netted a career-high 31 points.

“Exactly this game shows us that if you come into the game relaxed and not focused anybody can beat you,” [Nikola Milutinov](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nikola-milutinov/003941/), who paired his 13 points and 7 rebounds for a team-high PIR of 26, told EuroLeague TV. “This is why the EuroLeague is so strong. We have to change our mindset for the next game if we want to be a winning team.”

Nikola Milutinov: 'This is why the EuroLeague is so strong'

ASVEL netted 92 points against an Olympiacos side that boasted the fifth-stingiest defense (78.1 points conceded per game) in the competition coming into Tuesday’s clash. More importantly, though, the French team demonstrated that EuroLeague games are there to be won on the court, regardless of the status or the streak of a team.

“Our mindset today was problematic,” head coach Georgios Bartzokas admitted after the game. “We thought that, without giving our best effort defensively or offensively, we can win this game. We thought probably that Villeurbanne is not as strong as the previous teams that we played. But it’s not like that. EuroLeague is immediately giving you the reality in front of you.”

As Bartzokas stressed before the game, all wins are important in the competition regardless of the opponent. “A win is a win in the EuroLeague and, it’s equally important whether you beat Real or Panathinaikos, or ASVEL on your home court,” he stressed. “To me, the importance of tomorrow’s game is the same and maybe more."

ASVEL demonstrated on the court that it has what it takes to look in the eye of EuroLeague powerhouses. Meanwhile, Olympiacos avoided what would have been its first home loss of the season. Instead, the Greek side extended its winning streak to four with a victory that could prove to be more important than the ones against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Panathinaikos.

“Those nights will help us and it’s better when you win and see the lesson that you have to take,” Vezenkov noted.

After starting off the double-round week on a positive note, Olympiacos will look to learn its lesson and push to end the week in style away at Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv. As for ASVEL, it will try to build on this road performance and snap its five-game losing streak with a potential home victory over Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade on Thursday.

Cedi Osman was the unsung hero for Panathinaikos as the usual suspects shined again

[Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/panathinaikos-aktor-athens/pan/) clawed out [a 93-87 home win over Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/panathinaikos-finds-another-gear-to-subdue-maccabi-93-87/) thanks to a huge fourth-quarter comeback masterminded by perennial top performers [Kendrick Nunn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kendrick-nunn/012774/) and [Mathias Lessort](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mathias-lessort/003842/), but it was also facilitated by a flawless supporting cast.

Most of all, forward [Cedi Osman](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/cedi-osman/004088/) stood out as he scored 10 of his 12 points in the final 10 minutes, including a pair of clutch three-pointers which helped the reigning champ erase a 60-71 deficit and bounce back from last week’s tough home loss to traditional rival Olympiacos Piraeus in the Greek derby.

It was Osman’s most telling contribution since he joined Panathinaikos during the offseason after a seven-year stint in the NBA, as he apparently needed some time to adapt to the European game. His clutch effort drew praise from head coach and Turkish compatriot Ergin Ataman, who also singled out Lessort.

“We improved our aggressiveness on defense 100 percent in the last 15 minutes,” Ataman said in his post-game comments. “We also upped the tempo because Maccabi play very good basketball 5 on 5, but we found some fast-break points and got the crowd involved. Cedi Osman made a huge impact for the first time this season and Lessort played much better in the second half. A very important win in a game where we didn’t play well for 25 minutes.”

With Panathinaikos struggling from long range for much of the contest, Nunn was also pivotal as he too netted 10 of his team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, having made 8 of 13 shots from the floor and 3 of 3 from the foul line.

Nunn, who also had 4 assists, was humble in victory after claiming the player of the game award. “Credit to my teammates for getting it done,” he said in a courtside interview. “Maccabi had the momentum and the lead but then in the fourth quarter we got some stops and the victory. Everybody is confident in what they are doing and the offense comes from getting those stops.”

Lessort did his thing in crunch time, racking up defensive rebounds and doing offensive damage in the paint to finish on 18 points and 6 boards, while Juancho Hernangomez also emerged as a trump card up Ataman’s sleeve. The Spanish big man netted 10 of his 12 points in the second half, including a huge triple which game Panathinaikos a decisive 89-82 lead in the closing stages.

It was another tough loss for Maccabi and its head coach Oded Kattash, the fifth in the last six games, but the former guard who played for both clubs and also coached Panathinaikos during his illustrious career, had no complaints about his team’s effort.

“The players are exhausted but I like the way we performed and fought,” he said. “We were there and I am proud of the way we played. We played the right way and put ourselves in a position to win the game, but it’s not the first time we ran out of energy in the second half.”

The schedule will not get any easier for Maccabi as it hosts Olympiacos in Round 10 while Panathinaikos visits Virtus Segafredo Bologna.

Markus Howard was held 0 for 4 from the floor as Anadolu Efes grabbed an important 84-89 win at Baskonia on Tuesday night.

Efes head coach Tomislav Mijatovic didn’t think his team would do the nearly impossible - but it did: holding Howard scoreless.

Baskonia’s marksman missed all 4 of his three-point attempts and failed to score in [Efes’s 84-89 road victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/efes-gets-crucial-road-win-hands-baskonia-first-home-loss/) in a battle of teams on either side of the line for the final play-in spot. Howard, who entered the game averaging 12.8 points, did dish out 3 assists, but he did not score.

“We all know he is a great scorer and great player. Collectively we kept him to zero points. This is not a reality. This doesn’t happen,” Mijatovic told the post-game press conference.

It was just the second time in 81 games that the American failed to score a point. The other game came in Round 26 of the 2022-23 season in 7:26 minutes against Valencia. 

Howard had made at least 1 three-pointer in 20 straight and 43 of his last 44 games and he was the league leader in three-pointers made with 2.8 per game. And Howard came into the game after an amazing performance over the weekend, hitting 8 three-pointers in scoring 38 points in a 100-99 win over Lleida in the Spanish League.

“He scored 38 the other night and now he’s kept to zero. There are no machines here. We’re all humans,” the Efes coach said. “But at the same time, it is a team sport. Okay, he scored zero, but if you go down the line, Chima Moneke scored 22. Players of that caliber whenever they are on the court, they draw so much defensive attention on themselves that the other guy is gonna score a little bit more.”

Still, Mijatovic praised his players for sticking to the game plan.

“When he got into the game, our players really followed the principle. They were close, they were on him, they were challenging the shots. And they were making him take contested shots. When you play against a player with that kind of scoring capacity you have to do that, otherwise it is difficult to guard,” he said.

"Okay, he scored zero today, thank god he scored zero on us. But it’s still Markus Howard, one of the greatest shooters and scorers. He opened other players with his presence. But our guys, hats off, they did a super, super job focusing and guarding him like that. That was great.”

Filip Petrusev tied a career-high with 25 points scored and set a personal best with a PIR of 38 as Crvena Zvezda Belgrade held off Monaco 90-98.

Just four games into the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season, Olympiacos Piraeus granted [Filip Petrusev](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/filip-petrusev/011194/) his wish and loaned him out to his former team, [Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/crvena-zvezda-meridianbet-belgrade/red/). On Tuesday, Petrusev showed why he was eager to join a club where he could get more playing time as the Serbian big man produced the best game of his EuroLeague career in [a road win at AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/zvezda-tops-monaco-on-the-road-90-98/).

Petrusev tied a career high with 25 points scored and set a personal best with a PIR of 38 as Zvezda held off Monaco 90-98. He had a great shooting night in making all 11 of his free throws, 4-of-6 two-pointers and 2-of-3 threes – with the missed triple being a forced shot with no time left on the shot clock. Petrusev also corralled 7 rebounds and added 1 assist and 1 steal.

To put Petrusev’s line in perspective, he had 20 points, 10 rebounds and a PIR of 7 in 43:28 minutes combined in his four games with Olympiacos.

Filip Petrusev was on at Monaco

Petrusev’s success should not surprise many. After all, he was tied for third on Serbia in PIR at the Olympic Games in Paris over the summer and was second in rebounds behind only NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. He came home from Paris with a bronze medal.

Despite failing to secure a key role with the Reds, Petrusev’s confidence was intact when he returned to Belgrade. Through four games with Zvezda, he has seen his minutes, points scored and PIR increase in every game thus far.

Against Monaco, Petrusev was a factor all night long. He scored 12 points and grabbed 3 rebounds in the first half and posted 13 and 4 in the second. He scored 8 points in the final 6 minutes, including 6 free throws to all but ice the game.

After this monster game in the principality, it is back to France for Petrusev on Thursday when he and Zvezda visit LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. Rest assured, he is not overlooking that opponent: "We came here for two wins on this road trip and we have one more at ASVEL in two days, so we need to forget this game and focus on ASVEL tomorrow."

With Petrusev playing the way he did in Monaco, he and Zvezda can be a threat to every opponent as they seek their fourth road win of the campaign.

After a first half that saw him score zero points, Nigel Hayes-Davis erupted for 25 in the second half to ensure Fenerbahce Beko beat FC Bayern Basketball in Round 9.

Things were not looking good for [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/) heading into the halftime break during [Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul's Round 9 content against FC Bayern Munich](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/hayes-davis-leads-fenerbahce-past-bayern-87-76/). But, that pause in the game seemed to do him the world of good as he came out for the second half a different man.

Hayes-Davis did not have a good start, picking up two quick fouls and missing three consecutive shots as Bayern built a double-digit lead, 11-21. He barely saw playing time in the second quarter and had a goose egg at halftime. It’s not to say that he lit things up immediately after the break, either, picking up a turnover and missing two more shots to take him to 0 of 6 from the field.

Once Hayes-Davis found his rhythm, however, things were very different. Hayes-Davis went on to score his next nine shots, starting with back-to-back three-pointers. He had 18 points in the final 7 minutes to break a Fenerbahce club record for most points in a third quarter, and by the time he followed a driving layup with a bomb from beyond the arc, his team led 67-58 after 30 minutes.

Far from stopping there, Hayes-Davis banked in a close shot early in the fourth quarter and buried his fifth three-pointer to pretty much seal the outcome, 72-58. Once Hayes-Davis took a rest, Fenerbahce found a new go-to guy who had been off target until that moment in [Tarik Biberovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tarik-biberovic/006961/). After being scoreless for the majority of the game, Biberovic scored all 11 of his points in the final 6 minutes to make sure Bayern did not get back into the game.

Hayes-Davis finished the game with 25 points, which all came in the second half. That's four second-half points less than when [he had 50 against ALBA Berlin last season](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/nigel-hayes-davis-sets-euroleague-single-game-scoring-record-with-50-points/) to break the EuroLeague's all-time single-game scoring record.

"It was actually [Devon Hall](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/devon-hall/011205/). I have a little thing I like to do with him about microwave in the second half, and he doesn't believe in me, so his negativity infused me," Hayes-Davis joked after the game. "Teammates believed in me, Coach drew plays for me and at the start of the second half, even when I had zero points, I ultimately just believed in myself. The things I say to myself when I walk on the court, positive self-talk. I just try a better teammate and help the team win."

Play-caller Saras Jasikevicius was particularly impressed with the mental strength that Fenerbahce’s No. 11 showed on the night.

"It is fantastic how he kept going and didn't lose his composure, his confidence,” he said. “It is his second game in a row that he is doing the right thing, basically getting himself in foul trouble by doing the right things for the team. So in Lyon \[against ASVEL\] and here, he was in foul trouble but ultimately didn't lose his composure, didn't lose his confidence and became so hot in the second half that he was impossible to stop."

Fenerbahce is on a four-game winning streak, a period in which Hayes-Davis has averaged 23.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and a PIR of 23.3. He now travels to a familiar place as he comes up against his former team, Zalgiris Kaunas, on the road in Round 10 on Friday.

Real Madrid remained undefeated at WiZink Center by downing Virtus Segafredo Bologna 98-86 in the Spanish capital in Round 9 on Tuesday. 

Real improved to 4-5 in the standings, snapping a three-game losing streak, while Virtus dropped to 2-7. Mario Hezonja led the winners with 20 points. Xavier Rathan-Mayes added 17, Facu Campazzo and Walter Tavares each had 14 while Serge Ibaka had 11 for Real. Toko Shengelia led Virtus with 20 points. Isaia Cordinier added 18, Will Clyburn had 15 while Momo Diouf and Marco Belinelli each got 10 for the visitors.

Tavares got Real going with a layup and soon added an alley-oop dunk for a 5-0 lead. Cordinier banked in a three-pointer and soon added a reverse layup in a 0-6 run that gave Virtus its first lead, 5-6. Hezonja scored in the low post and erased Shengelia's layup with a dunk. Ante Zizic hit a jump hook, which Clyburn followed with a corner triple for a 9-13 score. Hezonja answered from downtown. After Clyburn hit a jumper, Campazzo's layup drew Real within 14-15. Shengelia improved on Eli Ndiaye's tip-in with a three-point play. Clyburn and Hezonja traded triples and Tavares gave Real a 23-21 lead. Rathan-Mayes buried a fadeaway jumper, then Shengelia and Hezonja each struck from beyond the arc for a 28-24 score. Diouf got Virtus closer, 28-25, after 10 minutes.

Matt Morgan followed Diouf's put-back layup with a three-pointer for a 28-30 Virtus lead early in the second quarter. Shengelia shocked the crowd with a high-flying tip-in and Clyburn added a fastbreak layup, prompting Real to call a timeout at 28-34 after a 0-10 run. Rathan-Mayes rescued the hosts with a triple and Ibaka added a jump hook for a 33-34 Real deficit. Diouf dunked and Shengelia banked in a jump hook, but Ibaka followed a two-handed slam with a triple that tied it at 38-38. Rathan-Mayes insisted from downtown, but Zizic buried a jump hook and Marco Belinelli's three-pointer gave Virtus a 41-44 edge. Sergio Llull joined the three-point shootout, Gabriel Deck added a three-point play and Tavares's dunk gave Real fresh air at 50-44. Llull sank another triple, but Cordinier gor the visitors within 53-49 at halftime.

Shengelia followed a triple with a step-back fadeaway jumper soon after the break. Alberto Abalde answered from downtown and Campazzo added a floater for a 58-54 score. Shengelia insisted from beyond the arc. Tavares scored down low and Abalde's second triple boosted his team's lead to 63-57. Campazzo found Hezonja for a layup that caused Virtus to call timeout at 65-57. Cordinier sank a three-pointer, Abalde answered with a layup and Campazzo's triple made it a double-digit game, 72-60. Clyburn hit a three-pointer over Tavares and added a jump hook. Campazzo found Hezonja for a triple and hit a circus shot. Rayjon Tucker banked in a running floater that Campazzo somehow matched at the other end for an 80-67 Real lead after 30 minutes.

Rathan-Mayes buried a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter. Belinelli hit a leaning shot that a red-hot Rathan-Hayes bettered with another triple. Belinelli kept pacing Virtus with an unbelievable three-pointer. Ibaka scored around the basket and Hezonja soon made it 90-74, with les than 6 minutes left. Zizic scored off a high-post pick-and-roll play, Deck bettered that with a layup-plus-foul and by the time Rathan-Mayes downed his fifth three-pointer everything was said and done, as Real had cruised to yet another convincing home victory.

Despite missing eight first-team players due to injury, ALBA Berlin managed to beat Olimpia Milano 105-101 in overtime in Round 9 of the 2024-25 EuroLeague season.

Undermanned ALBA showed incredible fight to beat Milan in OT, 105-101

The odds were truly stacked against ALBA Berlin heading into its Round 9 clash against EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, with the German side missing eight first-team regulars due to injury. Yet, Israel Gonzalez’s side pulled off the unthinkable by going on to beat the Italian opponent 105-101 in overtime at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Tuesday night. As a result of this scoreline, ALBA improved to 2-7 and Milan dropped to 3-6.

Most of ALBA’s scoring came courtesy of four men, with Gabriele Procida (29 points), Trevion Williams (23), Jonas Mattisseck (21) and Matteo Spagnolo (20) all netting 20 points or more. All four players recorded career highs in scoring. Williams also grabbed 11 rebounds to give him a double-double, with this being the third game this season that he has pulled down a double-digit number of boards. 

Two 18-year-olds, Dorian Grosber and Amon Doerries, made their EuroLeague debuts in this game, while another 18-year-old, Anton Nufer, had played just 2:48 minutes in the competition and more than doubled that total in Round 9.

For Milan, Nikola Mirotic had a 28-point, 10-rebound double-double, Zach LeDay netted 23 points, Neno Dimitrijevic added 14, and Stefano Tonut finished with 10.

There was plenty of scoring in the early going as Milan went 3 for 3 on triples to take an early 2-9 lead, but ALBA started to find its feet and managed to go 13-11 ahead after back-to-back triples by Procida and Mattisseck. However, that would prove to be the last time ALBA was ahead for quite some time. LeDay was causing all sorts of problems for the ALBA defense and helped spur an 11-0 run that put Milan in the driving seat, 13-22. Spagnolo came to the fore late in the first quarter by scoring 6 points to cut the deficit to four points, 19-23, at the end of the period.

Procida’s layup to start the second quarter made it a one-possession ballgame, 21-23, but Milan continued to find ways to keep ALBA at arm’s length, first through Mirotic and then via Armoni Brooks and Tonut. Still, the visitors were unable to pull away, and Procida leveled the score at 31-31 after capitalizing on a Fabien Causeur to score a fast-break layup. That only seemed to rile up Milan, which reeled off 10 straight points to make it 31-41. That distance more or less remained in check the rest of the way before halftime, with Milan leading 43-55 at the break.

It became the Italian show for ALBA once the third quarter got underway as Procida and Spagnolo combined to devastating effect to reduce the gap to five points, 52-57. Milan reestablished its double-digit advantage through Causeur, Dimitrijevic and LeDay, with the score swelling to 55-68, but there was a good response by ALBA. In particular, Mattisseck and Williams really stood up on the offensive end to make Milan uncomfortable once more, then Procida’s layup with the final play of the period reduced the gap to eight points, 69-77.

The fight that ALBA showed throughout showed no signs of slowing down, even if the hosts were missing several key players, and it was Mattisseck and Rapieque who helped get the German side within touching distance of Milan, 80-83. Williams kept thriving inside and Spagnolo was getting more involved, with his jumper making it 84-86. Williams twice helped ALBA get within two points of the visitors, 86-88 and 88-90, but it was Spagnolo’s layup and then Tim Schneider’s 2 made free throws that saw Coach Gonzalez’s men finally level it up at 92-92 and send the game to overtime.

In what seemed like a good omen, Mirotic fouled Williams on the tip, giving ALBA a 94-92 advantage and its first lead since it was 13-11 in the first quarter. Mirotic didn’t take long to tie the game once more, but Procida’s three-point play and Schneider’s wing three had visiting coach Ettore Messina sweating on the sideline, 100-94. Tonut reduced the deficit with a perfect trip to the line, 100-96, but Mattisseck caused the roof to come off Mercedes-Benz Arena with his fifth triple on the night, 103-96. Even when Nico Mannion hit a three-pointer with 23 seconds left to make it 103-101, Procida kept his cool from the line with 6 seconds remaining as ALBA came away with a memorable 105-101 triumph.

The home team's fans will not forget this game any time soon

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens returned to winning ways with a hard-fought home win over Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, 93-87, having trailed for the lion’s share of the contest before hitting top gear in the last 4 minutes in Round 9 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. 

Panathinaikos finds another gear to subdue Maccabi, 93-87 

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens returned to winning ways with a hard-fought home win over Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, 93-87, having trailed for the lion’s share of the contest before hitting top gear in the last 4 minutes in Round 9 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

Kendrick Nunn paced Panathinaikos with 21 points and 4 assists, while Mathias Lessort racked up 18 points and 6 boards. Cedi Osman and Juancho Hernangomez chipped in with 12 points each while Jerian Grant added 11 for the home team, which improved to 6-3 as it bounced back from last week’s Greek derby defeat at the hands of eternal rival Olympiacos Piraeus.

At the other end, Roman Sorkin led Maccabi with 21 points and 7 boards. Jaylen Hoard amassed 14 points and 5 rebounds and Rokas Jokubaitis netted 13 points for the visitors, who dropped to 3-6 after suffering their fifth defeat in the last six games.

Maccabi made a tremendous start and caused the Greens all sorts of problems inside, with Hoard doing the damage early on as the home team’s incensed head coach Ergin Ataman called a timeout inside the first minute of the game. Maccabi led 21-25 at the end of the first quarter as it sank 10 of 13 shots from two-point range while Panathinaikos committed 5 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.

The hosts closed the gap to 27-29 early in the second but Maccabi held firm and engineered its biggest lead of the night, 33-45, late in the first half before Panathinaikos managed to trim its deficit to 37-47 at halftime. The misfiring hosts shot 2 of 10 from deep in the opening 20 minutes, having also committed 10 turnovers while losing the battle of the boards 11-15.

Panathinaikos came up with an 8-0 run early in the third to close in on the visiting team, 49-51, but stubborn Maccabi refused to relinquish its lead and headed into the final 10 minutes 60-63 ahead, although Lessort made some big plays in the pain to keep his team’s challenge alive.

Maccabi looked the more likely winner when a 0-8 run at the start of the fourth gave the visitors a 60-71 lead, but Panathinaikos once again dug deep into its vast resources to flip the script and come out on top. With Nunn and Lessort carrying the effort, Hernangomez and Osman joined the party with clutch shots from downtown as Panathinaikos nosed ahead for the first time, 79-76, with 4 minutes left on the clock.

Maccabi was still in it before a Lessort blitz basically sealed the contest, as the big man did it all in less than 60 seconds several plays later. He sank a pair of free throws to make it 86-82, then smothered a defensive rebound and finally dished out a pass to Hernangomez to nail a triple that effectively forced Maccabi into submission. The visitors battled hard to force a final twist but it never came as ice-cool free throw shooting in the final minute saw Panathinaikos grab a precious win in its bid to stay in the playoff picture.   

The reigning champs trailed for 36 minutes and then turned the tide behind Mathias Lessort and Kendrick Nunn
