Barcelona veterans Kevin Punter, Jan Vesely and Tomas Satoransky all stepped up to help send their team to the EuroLeague Playoffs in Round 34.

Veterans made key, clutch plays for Barcelona to punch playoff ticket

[FC Barcelona](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/fc-barcelona/bar/) is playoff bound. Few thought that would be the case when Barcelona lost four of its last five games and was 14-13 at the end of February, sitting outside the postseason spots in 11th place.

However, fifth-placed Barcelona is now pitted against [AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/mco/) in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs, having completed a big turnaround with [a hard-fought and dramatic 91-87 win over long-eliminated Virtus Segafredo Bologna](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/barcelona-fights-off-virtus-91-87-clinches-playoff-berth/) on Friday night.

“They are a good team, despite the record,” said [Kevin Punter](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kevin-punter/009862/), the game’s top scorer with 20 points on 4-for-5 three-point shooting. “Glad we were able to pull it out.”

Pull out the win they did. After Barcelona controlled the game for the first three quarters, Virtus stormed in front in the fourth and led 76-81 with under 4 minutes to play.

“We were struggling there at the end, but we found the way to win, that’s the most important,” said [Tomas Satoransky](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tomas-satoransky/002939/), who collected 11 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds.

“We knew how to stay in the game. We made some big plays at the end, made big free throws and good defense. It was a game to win in whatever fashion.”

Even though it was [Joel Parra](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/joel-parra/007464/) who scored a layup that made it 89-87 and put Barcelona up for good with 31.7 seconds to go, and [Jabari Parker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jabari-parker/012745/) made game-sealing free throws some 20 seconds later, it was Barcelona’s seasoned EuroLeague veterans – former All-EuroLeague players – who had key roles.

For starters, Punter forced a jump ball at mid-court with 58 seconds left when he knocked out the ball from Isaia Cordinier. Virtus did win the jump ball, but the remaining 8 seconds on the shot clock were not enough to score.

On the ensuing possession, Punter and [Jan Vesely](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jan-vesely/000925/), back in the lineup after missing 10 games, played high-low, finding a cutting Parra under the basket for an easy layup and a go-ahead bucket.

After a timeout, Virtus had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Vesely played perfect pick-and-roll defense, then with the help of Punter and Satoransky forced Matt Morgan to travel.

Barcelona got the ball, Parker made free throws and the game was over, with the playoff celebrations ready to start. 

“I think we deserved to be in the playoff, and to be in the fifth position,, head coach Joan Penarroya said. “Our season was very complicated, with many problems with injuries. The team fought, fought, fought every game. For Barca, it is not enough to play in the playoffs, but it is a day to enjoy.”

Barca has had really had terrible luck with injuries. In addition to Vesely, it has lost key players such as point guards [Nico Laprovittola](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nicolas-laprovittola/006435/) and [Juan Nunez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/juan-nunez/010106/), as well as big man [Chimezie Metu](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/chimezie-metu/013379/), to season-ending injuries.

“A lot of adversity this year, and we were able to finish fifth,” Punter said. “A true testament of us being a team, sticking together through good times, bad times. We were able to finish strong and now we get ready for the playoffs.”

There, Barcelona will face Monaco, a team it beat both times this season.

“Monaco is a great team, with a lot of stars, a lot of great individual players,” Satoransky said. “We beat them twice this season, but that does not play a role in the playoffs.”

The reigning champ had to launch a dramatic late comeback to force the extra period after falling behind by 8 points with less than three minutes remaining, and ultimately took the W after dominating overtime to claim the regular season’s best home record, 14-3.

Ataman, however, was looking at the big picture after a second consecutive high-scoring game in Athens, with Paris Basketball having triumphed 98-101 in another thriller in Round 32. And with red-hot Anadolu Efes Istanbul up next, Ataman is more than wary of the threat posed by his former team.

"This mentality will not take us so far," Ataman told EuroLeague TV immediately after Friday’s win. "This is a very dangerous situation."

"One home game before we took 101 points against Paris, tonight before overtime it was 96 points. With this mentality we will lose in the playoffs and we will not advance to the Final Four. One hundred percent, I am not satisfied. It’s nothing to win this game. If we play like this, Efes will go to the Final Four and we will watch the Final Four on the TV."

In-form forward [Juancho Hernangomez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/juancho-hernangomez/012712/), who netted a career-high 18 points and completed a double-double by also grabbing 11 rebounds, echoed the sentiments of his coach as he warned: "It’s tough to beat us at home, but we cannot play with fire every time. Let’s get ready. We didn’t play our best basketball yet, and that’s the good thing for us."

However, the Greens were able to survive their defensive frailty thanks to another stellar performance from [Kendrick Nunn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kendrick-nunn/012774/), who also recorded a double-double as he netted 31 points on 6-of-10 three-point shooting and dished a personal best 10 assists.

That latest scoring spree ensures that Nunn finishes the regular season as the competition’s leading scorer, with his average of 21.1 points eclipsing FC Bayern Munich’s [Carsen Edwards](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carsen-edwards/011987/) with 20.5 points per night.

Nunn, though, preferred to focus on his distribution as he reflected: "What I’m most proud of is the 10 assists. I’m just playmaking, making great reads. My teammates want me to do that. They trust me with the ball, and I’m going to keep believing."

And with Nunn in this kind of form, despite the defensive concerns of their coach, Panathinaikos fans are surely also still believing in back-to-back title glory.

Anadolu Efes steamrolled into the EuroLeague Playoffs with an unprecedented run of eight successive wins to close out the regular season, the reward being a mouth-watering best-of-five series against defending champion Panathinaikos BC.

[Anadolu Efes Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/anadolu-efes-istanbul/ist/) steamrolled into the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs with an unprecedented run of eight successive wins to close out the regular season, the reward being a mouth-watering best-of-five series against defending champion [Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/panathinaikos-aktor-athens/pan/). 

Having missed out on the business end of the competition in the previous two campaigns, Efes could not have asked for a more enthralling challenge as the Turkish side will lock horns with its iconic former head coach Ergin Ataman.

After winning the EuroLeague in his first season with Panathinaikos last year, Ataman will surely face an emotional blockbuster against Efes after lifting back-to-back titles with the Turkish outfit in 2021 and 2022 amid a glorious spell with the club.

On Friday night, Efes became the first EuroLeague team in the round-robin era (since 2016) to close the regular season with eight straight victories. Eight rounds ago, Efes were 13th and two wins short of the play-in. Now they’re in the top six and playoff bound after [an 87-77 home win over Zalgiris Kaunas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/efes-beats-zalgiris-87-77-to-reach-playoffs/), improving their record to 20-14 after a series of impressive wins.

Five players scored in double figures against the Lithuanian side followed by [Darius Thompson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/darius-thompson/011078/), who also put in a massive shift with 9 points and 8 assists. The manner in which Efes ground out a hard-fought win over Zalgiris embodied the eight-game streak, with the top performers leading by example on defense as they hustled relentlessly when the chips were down.

Zalgiris had fought back from a 19-point deficit to level the score in the closing stages, 73-73, before ironclad defense coupled with some inspired individual efforts at the other end propelled Efes to a crucial victory in the quest to enter the playoffs.

Stalwart [Shane Larkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shane-larkin/007200/), who was instrumental in lifting the EuroLeague double under Ataman, heaped praise on his teammates after pacing Efes with 13 points, 4 assists and 2 steals, earning the player of the game accolade.  

“I am extremely proud of our team, which is one of the youngest in the league. We’ve grown all season long, it’s been full of ups and downs and there were a lot of different things we’ve had to deal with,” Larkin said in his postgame comments.  

“We stuck together towards the end and found our chemistry at the right time. We got to the place where we want to be, the playoffs, giving ourselves the chance to win the championship.”

Larkin stressed just how vital the team’s determination was in the face of adversity against Zalgiris, as defeat would have relegated Efes to the play-in purgatory with no room for error.

“It’s all about will at the end of the day and that’s what the playoffs are,” he said. “It comes down to who wants it more and we were able to make plays in the fourth quarter of a game that we had to win.”

The outcome was a fitting reward for head coach Luca Banchi and his assistant Tomislav Mijatovic, who selflessly made way for the Italian in January after being in charge for 11 months. Having endured a 2-5 start in the EuroLeague, Banchi got Efes firing on all cylinders when the season was on the line and now faces a head-on collision with the imperious Ataman, who is aiming to replicate his Efes accomplishment at the helm of Panathinaikos.

In his postgame comments, Banchi was endlessly appreciative for being welcomed at Efes with open arms, hailing the franchise for vesting its faith in him after he endured a tough spell at Virtus Segafredo Bologna.

“I am very happy but first of all very proud, so let me thank this group of guys. They are special and they proved that tonight, but let me also thank my coaching staff as they did an amazing job in building and preparing this team before I even arrived,” said Banchi.

“During the eight-game winning streak, most games were tight and we were always ready to respond. What impressed me the most was the defensive desire and what we have done can’t be achieved without effort and sacrifice.”

If Efes is to stun Panathinaikos and reach the Final Four, the Turkish team will need to be every bit as tenacious against Ataman’s troops in what promises to be a basketball extravaganza, keeping fans on the edge of their seats down to the wire.

Barcelona finished with a 20-14 record, the same as Efes and Real Madrid, but it wins out in the three-team tiebreaker due to its superior head-to-head record.

Barcelona trailed by 5 points late in the fourth quarter and 85-87 in the penultimate minute, but Jabari Parker and Joel Parker scored key close-range buckets, while Kevin Punter and Jan Vesely came up with huge defensive plays to help Barcelona win the game. 

The hosts had six scorers in double digits, led by Punter’s 20 points. Justin Anderson had 12, while Tomas Satoransky collected 11 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds. Parra, Parker and Dario Brizuela scored 10 points apiece in the win. Tornike Shengelia scored 17 points, Justin Holiday had 16, and Will Clyburn netted 15 in defeat. Ante Zizic had 12 points and Isaia Cordinier netted 11 for Virtus.

The game started with offensive fireworks. Anderson had a triple, and Punter followed it with a fast-break layup, but Clyburn hit one from downtown, and after close-range baskets from Shengelia and Zizic, Clyburn’s second triple gave Virtus a 9-10 lead. But Barcelona was feasting on the visitors’ turnovers, as Punter nailed a triple and Anderson a tough baseline jumper, before Barcelona finished the quarter with a 9-2 run. Brizuela scored at the rim twice during that spurt, and Punter hit it from way downtown to make it 23-16 after 10 minutes.

Two more turnovers from Virtus, which got their turnover tally to 10, led to a basket from Parra and a three-point play from Punter, opening 28-16. But Holiday answered with back-to-back triples to halve the deficit. Parra and Shengelia traded three-point plays, and Vesely had a baseline jumper and a dunk, Anderson also had a two-handed dunk, before Parker’s jumper restored a double-digit lead, 41-31. But Zizic scored twice after offensive boards, only for Willy Hernangomez to reply with two buckets, including a big dunk, to help make it 45-38 at halftime.

Virtus scored the first two baskets of the third quarter to get within 45-42. But Anderson had a three-point play, and when Clyburn hit a three-pointer, Punter answered with a four-point play to open 54-45. However, Zizic scored twice inside and Clyburn once from the outside to keep Virtus close. Punter had a triple and another basket to make it 63-54, and after Clyburn and Satoransky traded triples, back-to-back threes from Holiday and Achille Polonara cut the margin to 66-63. But Jan Vesely, back for the first time after a lengthy absence, hit a three-pointer of his own to help make it 71-65 after 30 minutes.

Virtus kept charging, however, with Matthew Morgan sparking things with a three-pointer, then Holiday and Momo Diouf cutting it to 73-72. Shengelia’s baseline jumper put Virtus in front, 75-76, then Holiday had a fast-break dunk and a triple to extend the margin to 76-81. A dunk by Hernangomez and a triple from Brizuela tied things up, and teams proceeded to trade leads. Cordinier’s drive to the rim gave Virtus an 85-87 lead in the penultimate minute, but Parker scored with a soft touch from close range. Barca did not allow another basket, thanks to Punter forcing a jump-ball against Cordinier, and Vesely forcing Morgan to travel, while a layup from Parra and free throws from Parker won the game for the hosts, clinching them fifth place.

A high-scoring first half was edged by Zvezda for a 47-49 interval lead. It stayed close right until the final possession, which Zvezda couldn’t convert to win it in regulation, and Panathinaikos controlled the extra five minutes. 

Kendrick Nunn paced the home team with 31 points and 10 assists, as Juancho Hernangomez also bagged a double-double 18 points and 11 rebounds. Wenyen Gabriel scored 8 of his 16 points in overtime, while Jerian Grant scored 12 and Omer Yurtseven netted 11. Codi Miller-McIntyre powered Zvezda with 26 points, while former Green Nemanja Nedovic added 22, Filip Petrusev scored 16 and Luka Mitrovic had 13.

Miller-McIntyre’s triple gave Zvezda an early lead, before Petrusev scored twice at the rim either side of a Konstantinos Mitoglou corner three for a 7-7 tie. Three-point plays from Grant and Gabriel sent the host ahead, and Miller-McIntyre and Nunn traded inside blows before Mitoglou made another three-point play. Miller-McIntyre stayed hot with another pair of triples, before Cedi Osman’s deep strike was quickly answered by Dejan Davidovac, Miller-McIntyre – with his fourth triple of the quarter – and Nedovic for a 23-26 Zvezda lead at the end of the first.

Hernangomez and Yurtseven joined the three-point party early in the second, but Mitrovic scored twice at the other end and Miller-McIntyre’s driving layup kept Zvezda ahead, 29-32. Lorenzo Brown’s slaloming score and a pair of Hernangomez deep balls forced a lead change, but Zvezda fought back with Petrusev at the rim and Nedovic from deep, 37-38. Nunn and Nedovic continued the long-range shoot-out, before Miller-McIntyre returned with another layup. Rokas Giedraitis and Petrusev dunked, and another Nunn three-ball made it 47-49 at the break.

Nedovic and Nunn started the second-half scoring before John Brown and Gabriel netted inside for a 54-54 tie. Nedovic’s fourth triple was answered by Gabriel’s three-point play, and Miller-McIntyre’s magic continued with another deep strike, 57-62. Nunn, Nedovic and Miller-McIntyre all stayed hot by scoring again before Hernangomez made it 66-66. Nedovic and John Brown pushed Zvezda back in front, but Hernangomez and Yurtseven dunked to keep it close. Miller-McIntyre scored again, hurting his ankle in the process, and Yurtseven’s layup-and-one made it 77-77 with 10 minutes left.

Lorenzo Brown and Mitrovic traded inside scores early in the fourth, before Mitrovic’s three-point play was cancelled out by another Nunn triple. Kostas Sloukas’s mid-range strike was bettered by Nikola Kalinic’s triple for an 84-85 Zvezda lead with 5 minutes left. Kalinic hit another threeball and Petrusev scored 4 straight points for an 86-94 lead, the biggest margin of the night. Nunn’s sixth triple gave the Greens hope, and Hernangomez added another three-ball to make it 92-94. Sloukas tied it up from the foul line, before Kalinic’s layup was answered by Hernangomez’s long two for another tie, 96-96, with 25 seconds left, and Giedraitis just missed on the final possession.

Kalinic’s tip-in opened overtime and Petrusev added a three-point play, but Gabriel took over with 6 straight points to send the Greens ahead, 104-101. Zvezda could then only score free throws the rest of the way, while Nunn and Gabriel’s inside scores were followed by Grant’s three-pointer to seal the deal.

Jordan Nwora and Shane Larkin paced Efes on 13 points each, Roland Smits added 11, while PJ Dozier and Ercan Osmani chipped in with 10 apiece. At the other end, Sylvain Francisco and Edgaras Ulanovas led Zalgiris with 12 points each and Ignas Brazdeikis scored 11. Isaiah Wong, Laurynas Birutis and Deividas Sirvydis sank 10 points apiece for the visitors. 

Efes thrived from ironclad defense in the opening period and won the first quarter 22-14 after making 11-of-15 shots from inside, where the hosts thoroughly dominated.

The Turkish team pulled away to 33-14 on the back of a 15-0 run late in the first quarter and early in the second, with Dan Oturu and particularly Nwora doing damage from all over. Nwora hit a couple of threes in the process to finish the first half on 11 points, with former Zalgiris forward adding Smits 8 while Oturu netted 7.

Zalgiris regained some composure late in the first half and having trailed 49-37 at halftime, the Lithuanian side slashed the deficit to 58-49 early in the third quarter before Darius Thompson stepped to keep Efes firmly in the driving seat. A 6-0 run saw the hosts regain a 15-point lead, with their fast-flowing offense paying dividends.

The visitors were able to counter through Ulanovas, who caught fire in the third quarter and knocked down a barrage of shots from inside as well as from downtown to help Zalgiris stay in touch. Having seen the visiting team close the gap to 65-61 with a flurry of three-pointers, Efes was spurred back into action and carried a 71-64 advantage into the final 10 minutes.

Driven by the third quarter fightback, Zalgiris was soon breathing down the home side’s neck, 71-69, as Francisco hit a step-back triple. The teams were level, 73-73, moments later as big man Bryant Dunston dunked on his former club which finally forced Efes to ramp up its defense in the next few minutes.

Larkin sank four successive free throws, Nwora followed up with a huge dunk on a fast break and Bryant netted a baseline mid-range jumper amid a 10-0 streak which put Efes back in control, 83-73. It turned out to be a clutch sequence as the home side kept its foot on the gas, eventually running out a comfortable winner in front of a noisy home crowd.
