The journey has been stratospheric, and ‘The Making of a EuroLeague Team’, a documentary series by Euroleague Basketball Originals, takes viewers behind the curtain as Paris prepares for its debut EuroLeague season.

Last weekend saw one of the most impressive events in the recent history of European basketball.

Some 42,000 fans embarked upon Athens' most famous arena for a fun-filled day of basketball. Even the players themselves were in shock at the beauty of the Panathenaic Stadium and the fact that they could play in front of an audience like this – and even more so in an outdoor setting.

Efes and Maccabi were the first to get a taste of the atmosphere, with everyone being ever so quick to get out their mobile phones and record footage of what they were seeing. They knew that this is something they may not get to experience again. Efes went on to win the game 89-66, with [Elijah Bryant](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/elijah-bryant/009846/) netting a game-high 16 points. [Ercan Osmani](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/ercan-osmani/012710/) and [Dan Oturu](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dan-oturu/012788/) had 14 points apiece for Efes, while [Jaylen Hoard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jaylen-hoard/006835/) was Maccabi's leading scorer with 14.

Later that night, it was the turn of the home team Panathinaikos to take center stage. The reigning EuroLeague champion received a warm reception from the crowd as the players and coaches made their way onto the court, as did former Greens boss Zeljko Obradovic, who won five EuroLeague titles while at OAKA and now coaches Partizan. Although [Kendrick Nunn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kendrick-nunn/012774/) scored 16 points, more than anyone else, Partizan grabbed a 64-75 victory on the back of 13 points by Duane Washington and 12 by [Brandon Davies](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/brandon-davies/007870/).

Despite the impressive performances on the court, the real stars of the show were the fans. Istanbul is certainly a unique place, particularly when it comes to basketball. The episode begins with Doğancan Işik, a tour guide in Istanbul, explaining some of the key historical landmarks of Türkiye’s largest city and cultural differences in Istanbul. Then, other individuals, such as music artist Kerem Sedef, an Efes fan, and several basketball enthusiasts provide a sense of the local basketball culture in the city.

Fenerbahçe made history that year by becoming the first Turkish team to win the EuroLeague. Three years later, in 2020, Efes would end up winning a championship of its own – and then again in 2021, making it the third team to go back-to-back this century. Star player [Shane Larkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shane-larkin/007200/) and team captain [Dogus Balbay](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dogus-balbay/003521/) both attempt to explain just how Efes managed to get over the line in successive years.

As the episode delves back in to the sights of Istanbul, specifically the Grand Bazaar, Fenerbahçe team captain [Melih Mahmutoglu](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/melih-mahmutoglu/002969/) and ex-players Bogdanovic and Udoh state their favorite things about the city, as do former Efes forward [Cedi Osman](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/cedi-osman/004088/) and current guard Larkin. Sports journalist Deniz Aksoy also stresses how Istanbul is a hotbed for basketball with so many teams in the city before we get to relive the first Istanbul derby from last season, which came in Round 17.

Efes hosted Fenerbahçe on that occasion, but it was the visitors who came out on top. Efes duo Larkin and [Mike Daum](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-daum/012786/) comment on the incredible noise that the Istanbul derby provides, while Fenerbahçe head coach Saras Jasikevicius and center [Georgios Papagiannis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/georgios-papagiannis/005844/) were more than happy to play the role of party pooper as their team came away with the win.

One week before Fenerbahçe and Efes met at Ulker Sports and Events Hall in Round 33, the penultimate round of the regular season, Fenerbahçe’s [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/) made EuroLeague history by scoring a record-breaking 50 points against ALBA Berlin, leading him to earn the nickname of “Fifty”. He took that record from a man who plays across town, as Larkin had 49 points for Efes in a game against FC Bayern Munich in November 2019.

With Fenerbahçe having already secured a playoff spot and Efes chasing a spot in the brand-new Play-In Showdown, Tomislav Mijatovic’s men secured an important victory. That win means the record between Efes and Fenerbahçe this century is 8-14, and we get to hear from several protagonists from that Round 33 triumph, including Larkin, [Dan Oturu](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dan-oturu/012788/), [Will Clyburn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/will-clyburn/004888/) and [Rodrigue Beaubois](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/rodrigue-beaubois/006590/).

Be it due to cultural differences or simply spending years facing each other in key games, rivalries build with time – especially those that are the most vociferous – and the ‘Rivalries’ documentary series provides a glimpse into what makes these derbies what they are today.

Fenerbahçe Beko has confirmed the signing of Boban Marjanovic on a one-year deal, with the center returning to the EuroLeague after nine years in the NBA.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul has added an abundance of size and experience to its roster by signing center [Boban Marjanovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/boban-marjanovic/lmg/) on a one-year deal, the club announced Wednesday.

Marjanovic (2.24 meters, 36 years old) arrives from the Houston Rockets, where he averaged 3.2 points and 2.3 rebounds in 14 NBA games last season. After playing four seasons in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague early in his career, Marjanovic returns to the competition a decade later.

### Early in Marjanovic's career

Marjanovic started his career with Hemofarm Vrsac, which he helped reach the BKT EuroCup Semifinals in 2009. During his time there, he played in four EuroCup campaigns (2006-10). The Serbian center would also feature in the competition for Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade in the 2013-14 season.

In the EuroLeague, Marjanovic first played for CSKA Moscow (2010-11) before seeing out the remainder of that season on loan at Zalgiris Kaunas (2010-11). In 2013-14, he appeared in both the EuroCup and EuroLeague as a Zvezda player. The 2014-15 campaign was Marjanovic's breakout season as he was chosen to the All-EuroLeague First Team, having averaged 16.6 points and a league-best 10.7 rebounds.

### Nine seasons in the NBA

In 2015, Marjanovic crossed the ocean to sign for the San Antonio Spurs and would remain in the NBA for nine years. He also suited up for the Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets. 

Marjanovic averaged 5.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in 331 NBA regular-season games. He also appeared in 31 playoff games over five seasons, in which he posted 5.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest.

### The Marjanovic trophy case

Marjanovic helped Zalgiris win three domestic titles (Lithuanian League, Lithuanian Cup and Baltic League) in 2011, and did the same with Zvezda (Serbian League, Serbian Cup and Adriatic League) in 2014. He also lifted the Serbian Cup with Zvezda in 2014.

Marjanovic has also been a member of the Serbian national team and helped it win a silver medal at EuroBasket 2017. He also won gold medals with Serbia at the 2007 U19 World Cup and the 2008 U20 European Championships.

One of the most charismatic players in the world and a fan favorite everywhere he has been, Marjanovic is now set to continue his career in the EuroLeague.

Mayer (1.93 meters, 17 years old) is a product of the club’s youth department, which he first joined at age 8. He made his professional debut last season. Mayer played limited minutes in five Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games and became the youngest player to ever score a basket for Maccabi in the competition.

Mayer carved out a role for himself in the Israeli League where he averaged 4.7 points and 1.8 assists in 21 Israeli League appearances, including a 16-point, 6-assist effort in the regular-season finale.

"We are very happy that Omer is continuing with us. He is a talented and diligent player, who started a process with us last season and made progress. I am sure he will make another leap this season as well."

At the junior level, Mayer tallied 19.0 points, 6.5 assists and 3.3 steals for U18 Maccabi at the Adidas Next Generation Tournament qualifying event in Belgrade last season. He won two national championships and two Israeli Cups with Maccabi’s junior teams. Mayer has also player for Israel’s national teams at the U16 and U18 levels. Over the summer, he averaged 18.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.1 assists to help Israel reach the semifinals of the European U18 Championship.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul has added strength and athleticism to its frontcourt with the addition of veteran center [Khem Birch](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/khem-birch/007182/), who has signed a one-year deal. 

Birch (2.06 meters, 31 years old) is a six-year NBA veteran, but spent the second part of last season with Basquet Girona, where he posted 8.8 points and 5.7 rebounds in 12 Spanish League games.

Birch returns to the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague having played in the competition in the 2016-17 season with Olympiacos Piraeus. That year, he helped the team reach the championship game, which the Reds lost against Fenerbahce. He averaged 7.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in an Olympiacos uniform.

Between Olympiacos and Girona, the Canadian spent six seasons in the NBA, suiting up with the Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors, and was also a member of the San Antonio Spurs. Birch appeared in a total of 298 NBA games, averaging 5.0 points and 4.4 rebounds. During those six years, he also spent time with the Lakeland Magic in the G League.

Birch played college basketball at University of Pittsburgh and University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and started his professional career with Sioux Falls in the D-League before arriving in Europe with Turkish side Usak Sportif in 2015.
