The first third of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season is in the books. The standings look incredibly tight, [Vassilis Spanoulis is coming off his first win as the head coach of AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/fluidity-fire-and-finishing-no-surprises-from-spanouliss-monaco/) with a road victory over the defending champions Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, and [Carsen Edwards](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carsen-edwards/011987/) has nearly doubled his scoring average to lead the league in scoring.

While there are no shortage of rapidly developing storylines across the league, some things in the EuroLeague do not change quite so quickly.

The table above lists this season’s most efficient scorers in points per possession among the 34 players using over 12 possessions per game. While there are several newcomers included here, the presence of [Sasha Vezenkov](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/sasha-vezenkov/003469/) and [Nikola Mirotic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nikola-mirotic/000796/) continues perhaps the most predictable trend in the EuroLeague. 

After a season away from Olympiacos, Vezenkov has picked up where he left off, actually improving on the top-ranked 1.22 points per possession he scored during his MVP season. Shooting 57% in the post, finishing 74% of his other shots at the rim, and knocking down 39% of his catch and shoot jumpers, his inside-outside scoring prowess has been the cornerstone of his team’s early success.

Mirotic has led the EuroLeague in scoring efficiency in three of the last five years while still placing in the top-five in the two seasons he didn’t finish on top. This season has been a good example of why. Even as Mirotic has had an off year by his standards scoring in the post, he’s made 43% of his spot up three-point attempts and 85% of his free throws to compensate as he remains one of the league’s toughest defensive assignments with his ability to beat defenders on and off the ball. He showed his whole arsenal in Round 20 scoring 29 on the road against the league’s most efficient defense coming into that game.

[Devin Booker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/devin-booker/007056/) is the most notable newcomer on this list relative to previous seasons. In this, the 33-year-old’s seventh EuroLeague campaign, he has had a breakout year of sorts. While Booker has had some efficient years at previous stops, he’s never scored this consistently in this big of a role. Leading all players in scoring as the screener in pick and rolls, he’s kept defenses honest popping to the perimeter while shooting a staggering 83% around the rim as well, finding great chemistry with FC Bayern Munich’s potent backcourt.

Perhaps the most surprising name here is [Facundo Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/), who has sat towards the top of numerous passing related leaderboards since debuting in the EuroLeague with Real Madrid during the 2017-18 season but never found as much success looking for his own shot as he is this season. Though he is still in a battle with [TJ Shorts](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tj-shorts/012608/) to be the league’s assists leader, he’s done so while looking to keep the ball more often in transition and emerging as more of a threat when sliding off the ball as well.

To round out the surprises, [Theo Maledon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/theo-maledon/007027/) has been a major bright spot for LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne and a much improved young talent than the one EuroLeague fans last saw. The 23-year-old guard has looked like a different player offensively than he did in his last EuroLeague season, also with ASVEL, in 2019-20, creating steadily out of ball screens, shooting the ball with confidence from beyond the arc, and delivering in several high-pressure road games already. 

[Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/) is a more established, battle-tested veteran but is nonetheless off to the best shooting start of his career, elevating his game early on. [Jabari Parker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jabari-parker/012745/) falls into that boat as well while his FC Barcelona teammate, [Kevin Punter](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kevin-punter/009862/), remains arguably the league’s most dangerous midrange scorer and a nightmare matchup when he gets hot but has found his way onto this list by virtue of striking more of a balance with the way he gets to his spots.

Consistency will be key for this group moving forward as they’ll look to lift their respective teams in what is shaping up to be an extremely crowded postseason picture.

Fluidity, fire and finishing: no surprises from Spanoulis’s Monaco

One solitary game might be too early for meaningful judgments about [Vassilis Spanoulis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/mco/spanoulis-vassilis/?season=E2024)’s coaching trajectory, but [Friday’s 88-91 debut victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/spanoulis-takes-debut-win-as-monaco-downs-panathinaikos-88-91/) for the new [AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/roster/mco/?season=2024-25) coach at his former club [Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/panathinaikos-bc-athens/roster/pan/?season=2024-25) certainly gave us some solid clues.

Firstly, fluidity.

Monaco headed into the game with an average of just 16.7 assists per game, one of the lowest figures in the league. In this game, however, the Roca Team demonstrated excellent ball movement, passing with a good rhythm and always looking for an open teammate to finish with 26 assists.

This should be no surprise whatsoever. Spanoulis, after all, was once the [EuroLeague all-time assists leader](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/stats/expanded/?size=25&viewType=traditional&statisticMode=accumulated&seasonMode=All&sortDirection=descending&statistic=assistances) (he now ranks fourth, behind [Nick Calathes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nick-calathes/001932/), [Sergio Rodriguez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/sergio-rodriguez/cvm/) and [Kostas Sloukas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kostas-sloukas/001926/)), so the new Monaco boss knows a few things about sharing the ball.

And he is already passing on those messages to his new players, saying after Friday’s win: “When I landed in Monaco I told them that with the talent they have, they have to share the ball more. We were one of the lowest \[in the league\] in assists, so you have to create, to play together and create a winning mentality environment.”

Interestingly, the chief distributor at Panathinaikos was the man who succeeded Spanoulis himself as the competition’s all-time leading scorer, [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/), who was held to just 6 points in scoring but orchestrated his team’s offensive efforts by dishing 10 assists with just 1 turnover.

And his new coach was extremely happy about that, enthusing: “When Mike James, the best scorer in the history of EuroLeague, passes the ball like this, you can tell this a good team. 10 assists, and not only assists – a lot of the time he created opportunities for some other teammate \[to assist\]. So Mike was unbelievable, like all the guys were unbelievable. Everybody contributed to the game, and I want to congratulate them.”

But basketball is about more than just pretty passing and, along with the fluidity, we also saw the fire.

Spanoulis was nothing if not the ultimately ferocious competitor, and it’s inevitable that his career on the sidelines will see him demand maximum effort from his players. That level of hustle was shown in Monaco’s impressive 39 points off turnovers and transitions, and the coach believes that will continue to be one of his team’s greatest assets.

“This is one of the biggest strengths of this team,” said Spanoulis. “Big athleticism, great hands, deflections, and very fast \[players\] to make easy points in fastbreak. We have great hustle players, role players, guys with huge motivation who are hungry for success. So we have to bring it together, that’s all.”

The Monaco players also gained an early snapshot, however, that their new boss will not be shy to let them know if he feels their effort levels are dropping. During a timeout towards the end of the first half, Spanoulis veered away from making strategic adjustments to deliver a more basic message, rising to his feet as he yelled: “We’ve f\*\*\*\*\*\* got to play better defense!”

Fluidity, fire…and finally, finishing.

Spanoulis is possibly the most clutch performer European basketball has ever seen, time after time using the last seconds of close contests to dig deep and find extra reserves of energy and quality.

And now his Monaco players are already doing the same.

Friday’s game at Panathinaikos featured 25 lead changes, and the outcome was very much in the balance heading into the final 2 minutes with the Greens leading 84-81. But then Monaco took over, with [Vitto Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/vitto-brown/013365/) and [Alpha Diallo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/alpha-diallo/011226/) netting tough inside baskets before [Jordan Loyd](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jordan-loyd/009754/) added a (Spanoulis style?) clutch three-pointer and followed up with 2 free throws to seal the deal, with Monaco ‘winning’ the final 2 minutes 4-10.

So, in summary, Monaco shared the ball brilliantly, played with great intensity and knew how to close the deal in crunch time. Fluidity, fire and finishing. Does that remind you of anyone…?

The team's medical staff checked Pierre out on Saturday at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital and prescribed the necessary treatment.

This season, Pierre's fifth with Fenerbahce, he has averaged 3.0 points and 1.8 rebounds in nine games. For his EuroLeague career, 129 games, Pierre has been worth 7.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Tavares was a dominant force in *El Clásico*, leading Real to a 90-97 double-overtime road victory over FC Barcelona with 24 points on 10-of-13 two-point shooting and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line. He added 18 rebounds, an assist, a steal, 2 blocks and 5 fouls drawn to amass a PIR of 39, the highest of all players in Round 12. Tavares claimed MVP of the Round honors for the seventh time in his career, and he is also the first Real player to be MVP of the Round in the 2024-25 campaign.

The second-best PIR, 38, belongs to [Nikola Mirotic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nikola-mirotic/000796/) of EA7 Emporio Armani Milan after he led his team to an 85-91 win at Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul with 29 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and 7 drawn fouls. LDLC ASVEL could lean on its fantastic guard duo of Theo Maledon and Nando De Colo to beat Anadolu Efes in Round 12 of the 2024-25 EuroLeague season.

ASVEL found its 'blueprint' in dismantling of Efes

[LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ldlc-asvel-villeurbanne/asv/) registered its biggest win of the season, and its largest win in more than two years, as it [beat the visiting Anadolu Efes Istanbul 97-82](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/asvel-rallies-to-blow-past-efes-97-82/) on Friday night.

It was a celebratory night at LDLC Arena to begin with, as team captain [Charles Kahudi](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/charles-kahudi/kir/) was honored in a pregame ceremony for making his 500th appearance for the team. For the first 20 minutes there was a growing feeling the team will not manage to finish the occasion as it wanted, with Efes dominating on offense.

The visitors scored 55 points in the first half, then held an 11-point lead in the opening minute of the third quarter, and 51-61 a minute later. From that point on, however, it felt as if was only one team on the floor. And that was ASVEL.

"It was just a reaction from us," [Theo Maledon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/theo-maledon/007027/) said in a EuroLeague TV interview after the game. "In the first I felt we were not executing, so it was just a reaction from everybody, realizing that we need to play with more intensity."

The hosts needed 6 minutes to erase the deficit, and after [Joffrey Lauvergne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/joffrey-lauvergne/004194/) finished a fast break with a dunk to give ASVEL a 68-66 lead with 1:31 to go in the third, the home team never relinquished the lead.

ASVEL had a two-headed playmaking monster in Maledon and [Nando De Colo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nando-de-colo/002100/). This combination of youth and experience torched Efes throughout the game. Maledon had 17 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds, and even though the 23-year-old shined like he has many times already this season, De Colo's performance might have been more eye-pleasing.

In just over 16 minutes on the floor, the 37-year-old De Colo had 17 points, making all 3 of his two-point shots and 3-of-6 three-pointers, while also dishing 4 assists. He masterminded the offense when he was on the floor, and had a great connection with another veteran, big man Lauvegne, who finished as ASVEL's top scorer with 18 points on 9-of-11 two-point shooting.

But what made the difference was ASVEL's second-half defense. After allowing 61 points in the first 22 minutes of this contest, ASVEL allowed just 10 points in the next 14 minutes. Making one defensive stop after another allowed ASVEL to run and open a 90-71 lead, a 29-10 spurt.

"That's got to be our blueprint, that's how we have to approach every game, and just keep riding that wave," Maledon said.

"I think we told truth to ourselves at halftime," De Colo explained. "We knew they scored too and we tried to fix things between us and try to be more aggressive."

"The season is long, and the players proved themselves that they can be a great defensive team, so hopefully we can build on this", ASVEL coach Pierric Poupet said, adding: "This is the EuroLeague, and if we want to compete every game, we have to always match this intensity level."

The next step for ASVEL will be taking this type of performance on the road. ASVEL is now 4-2 on its home floor but 0-6 on the road. However, before going on the road, ASVEL will have another home test against none other than Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Defense and selflessness fueled Crvena Zvezda against Bayern

Having reached triple figures in each of its last two games (225 points overall), FC Bayern Munich arrived in Belgrade trying to extend its two-game winning streak against [Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/crvena-zvezda-meridianbet-belgrade/red/). But the hosts, who came to this game in the opposite mood after losing two in a row – the last coming against Partizan in the local derby the previous week – were conjured to avoid that thing to happen.

From the very beginning, Zvezda played high-tempo basketball, putting a lot of pressure on both ends. But the hosts needed to push hard and wait for the right moment to soar, as Bayern took a short 26-28 lead early in the second quarter. A 12-0 run led by [Milos Teodosic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/milos-teodosic/jdr/) and [Yago Dos Santos](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/yago-dos-santos/012044/) at that moment fueled the home team, which later used a 29-10 score in the third period to definitely pull away.

“It was a great victory, we really needed this," [Filip Petrusev](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/filip-petrusev/011194/) recognized right after the game. “We needed this win to get our confidence back, get our game back, get our swag back on and I'm really happy. You know, we played the whole 40 minutes, whoever got on the court played good defense and good offense, so we're really happy about this win."

The Serbian center, who tied his career high in scoring with 25 points – 15 came in the first period – was the first one to stress the completeness of his team’s game, who held the competition’s best scoring team to 77 points and the league’s top scorer, [Carsen Edwards](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carsen-edwards/011987/), to just 3 points. On the other side, Zvezda played an impressive game on offense, scoring 101 points and dishing 34 assists.

“Today, we want a good game and a good win. And this is exactly what happened,” Zvezda head coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos celebrated in the press conference. “We played against the best offense of the league \[...\] and as you saw, we kept them very low. But also offensively, we moved the ball, we served the ball and we had very good movement to find the best option to shoot.

Talking about offense, the 34 assists recorded by his team overcame the previous best mark that occurred last season on March 22, 2024, when the team registered 30 in a 94-79 win against Virtus Segafredo Bologna. On that occasion, Teodosic got 9 and [Adam Hanga](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/adam-hanga/005099/) 6, while on Friday, [Codi Miller-McIntyre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/codi-miller-mcintyre/009048/) got 12 all by himself.

“We had time to work because there was a break after a lot of games,” Sfairopoulos revealed. “We refreshed the team, we worked on our problems, details defensively, and \[...\] we had a great team game. Not only offensively with 34 assists, but also defensively. In general, we are a team that passes really well. These 34 assists are, to me, the meaning of the team. It shows how good we are."

On the other side, focusing on defense, Zvezda's work was also excellent, and one of the keys was to include [Ognjen Dobric](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/ognjen-dobric/004007/) in the starting five for the first time of the season. He not only stopped Edwards, but also scored 13 of his total 15 points in the third quarter, helping his team seal the outcome plenty of minutes before the final whistle.

“He did a great job. We know the quality he has and that showed today. He was dominant in both ends of the game”. Sfairopoulos praised. “Defensively and offensively, he made really good decisions on whatever he did. He did \[everything\] the right way and he showed character, but also why we brought him."

“From the first to the last minute we came out prepared and we showed how tough we can be when we play our games”, Dobric said. “I hope we're gonna continue like that and get some more wins. \[...\] It's a great reaction after some losses in the EuroLeague.”
