Real Madrid finally got its first road win of the 2024-25 EuroLeague season, and it came at a place where it loves to win: at the home of FC Barcelona.

Real Madrid changed its fortunes and piled pressure on Barcelona with Clásico win

Sometimes, seeing is believing. It was unfathomable that a team of [Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/real-madrid/mad/)'s caliber, with all of the stars it has on the team, could lose five straight Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games away from WiZink Center. Yet, that is pricesely what happened. On Thursday night, Real Madrid managed to change its fortunes – and at the one place it wants to win most.

Any sports fan knows about the significance of *El Clásico*. For fans of Real Madrid and [FC Barcelona](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/fc-barcelona/bar/), this game means everything. And heading into [Round 12's Rivalry Series clash](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/real-madrid-gets-back-on-track-with-2ot-win-over-barcelona-90-97/), on the eve of Barcelona's 125th anniversary, both teams were in desperate need of a win. Barcelona had lost two straight games and given up 100+ points in each, something it had never done before in the EuroLeague, while *Los Blancos* – as mentioned – were masquerading as Jekyll and Hyde: a pretty dominant team at home and one that was incapable of winning on their travels.

Since 2019, Barcelona had enjoyed a 7-3 record against its archrival in regular-season games, but Real Madrid had twice come out on top at the Final Four in that time (2022, 2023). In fact, you have to go all the way back to February 23, 2018, to find the last time that Barcelona lost at Palau Blaugrana to *Los Blancos*. Even if the form guide made the 37th edition of *El Clásico* this century incredibly hard to call, the Azulgrana's 38-34 halftime lead – and the dominant play of [Jan Vesely](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jan-vesely/000925/), who had 12 first-half points – made it look like the hosts' impressive home run in this fixture would continue.

After the interval, [Mario Hezonja](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mario-hezonja/003108/) – a former Barcelona player who reportedly came close to rejoining the team this past summer before opting to renew with Real Madrid instead – erupted for 15 third-quarter points to give the visitors a 52-54 lead entering the fourth. Then, [Facundo Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/) and [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/) displayed their quality in the final quarter of regulation and both of the extra sessions as *Los Blancos* secured a 90-97 double-overtime victory.

"This is the *Clásico*. We gave everything, we defended," Tavares told EuroLeague TV. "We knew it was going to be hard, but we've got to fight. This year, we've got to sweat blood to win every game."

It would not be a surprise to see Real Madrid use this win over Barcelona as a springboard to surge up the standings, with the team now 6-6 and in the play-in spots, but the competition in the EuroLeague means that is not an easy task, as coach Chus Mateo admits.

"We never surrendered," Coach Mateo stated. "We were always there fighting, rebounding. Probably we are going to win more games on the road and we are going to lose some games at home. This is so tough. The EuroLeague is so tough. We need to keep fighting and believe until the end. Believe during the regular season and don't give up."

Tavares spoke of sweating blood, Coach Mateo wants his team to fight… Real Madrid showed that it is ready to display both of those qualities, having changed its fortunes and piled more pressure on Barcelona with a famous *Clásico* win.

Needing a statement victory to clear any doubts about its start to the season, [Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/real-madrid/mad/) was able to lean on three excellent performances by [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/), [Facundo Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/) and [Mario Hezonja](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mario-hezonja/003108/) as the 11-time Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion [downed FC Barcelona 90-97 in a double-overtime classic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/real-madrid-gets-back-on-track-with-2ot-win-over-barcelona-90-97/) on Thursday night.

Real Madrid managed to get its first road win of the season at the sixth time of asking, and it was its terrific trio of Tavares, Campazzo and Hezonja who really put in the hard yards. Together, they combined for 65 of their team's 97 points, 30 of the team's 46 rebounds, and 12 of the team's 22 assists. On a night when they were needed, they stepped up.

In many ways, watching Tavares and Campazzo was a reminder of the way they have dominated the EuroLeague in recent times. And the same can be said for Hezonja, who has been arguably the best forward in Europe since he joined Spain's capital club in 2022. Barcelona simply had no answer for these three, and it was a reminder of just how good Real Madrid can be when its best players rise to the occasion.

One of the many topics leading into the 37th edition of *El Clásico* this century was Hezonja's situation this past summer, when he was reportedly on the verge of rejoining Barcelona before eventually renewing his contract with Real Madrid. Players are always motivated to play in a game like *El Clásico*, but for Hezonja there was possibly an extra fire in his belly, with the Croatian netting 15 third-quarter points to help put *Los Blancos* in front entering the final frame.

Later, it was the heroics of Campazzo and Tavares that helped see Real Madrid over the line, first in the fourth quarter and then in overtime. Come the end of the game, Campazzo had an 18-point, 10-assist double-double and Tavares posted a 24-point, 18-rebound double-double, while Hezonja finished on 23 points.

"It's very fun. Playing a *Clásico* here in this environment, and also in Madrid, we enjoy it a lot," Campazzo told EuroLeague TV. "It's an extra motivation for us. I think today we had a big game for us \[because of\] how the season started. In the first half we were a little bit lost, and we were losing by four \[points\], so it wasn't that much. In the second half we did a great job: solid on defense, passing the ball. I think we did a great job."

With another star, [Dzanan Musa](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dzanan-musa/006540/), having a surprisingly quiet night with 9 points, all of which came in the first three quarters, Real Madrid was fortunate that it could lean on Campazzo, Tavares and Hezonja against Barcelona. This has not been the start to the season that many envisaged for Real Madrid, but a win in the *Clásico* is the perfect recipe to get the team back on track.

Also, John DiBartolomeo is now the new owner of the longest streak of consecutive free throws made.

The Maccabi playmaker who turned 24 years of age last week, playing in his seventh season in the competition, scored a career-high 24 points, making a career-best 11 two-point shots on 13 attempts. Jokubaitis also dished 6 assists. Everything seemed to be going his way.

"It is an amazing feeling", Jokubaitis said on EuroLeague TV when asked about his personal performance. "It is an extra motivation, and when you play like this and you win, it's and amazing feeling."

But he was just one of many Maccabi players playing one of their best games of the season.

[Jaylon Hoard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jaylen-hoard/006835/) scored 18 and grabbed 4 steals, while [Will Rayman](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/william-rayman/013381/) had 12 points, all marking personal best numbers for each player. [David DeJulius](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/david-de-julius/013250/), playing in his fifth game, had 14 points, which is the double his season-high of 7 points he scored in each of the last two games.

DeJulius also hit a pair of buzzer-beating shots, one to end the second quarter, and one at the end of the third.

"Finally," Jokubaitis said. "We were waiting for this \[type of\] a win a long time. This win is very important and I hope we build on this."

Appropriately, this game will also be remembered for [John DiBartolomeo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/john-dibartolomeo/007990/) who made two free throws with 1:11 left in the second quarter and became the owner of the longest streak in EuroLeague history with 70 consecutive free throws made. The previous owner was Kevin Punter with 69.

What's so unique about DiBartolomeo's accomplishment, it is a streak that dates back to December 2022. The last time he missed a free throw was on December 2 that year.

DiBartolomeo entered this season with 66 free throws made, then made a pair in the season opener, but did not go to the free throw line again until Round 12.

The Reds headed into Thursday’s clash as the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague’s second-best offense with 86.5 points scored per game. No team had managed to hold Olympiacos to fewer than 79 points in the last nine games, with [Coach Georgios Bartzokas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/oly/bartzokas-georgios/)’s side scoring at least 92 points in each of their previous five duels. Yet, Partizan would have none of it.

The visitors hit the ground running and scored 21 points in the first 5:14 minutes of the game, but Partizan tightened up its defense and forced poor shooting from Olympiacos that netted just 49 in the rest of the game. Olympiacos maintained a 16-25 lead after 10 minutes, but Partizan outscored its opponent 22-11 in the second for a narrow 38-36 lead at halftime.

“I’m super proud of my guys,” [Iffe Lundberg](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/iffe-lundberg/010781/), who netted 13 points, said after the game. “The way we fought, especially in the second quarter and then the rest of the game. The key was on defense tonight.”

Olympiacos came out strong in the third and took a 50-57 lead into the closing quarter. A three-pointer from [Kostas Papanikolaou](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kostas-papanikolaou/001255/) gave his team a 53-60 cushion with 8:23 left on the clock. That’s when Partizan’s defense stepped up again to provide its offense with much-needed energy. The hosts went on a 12-2 surge inspired by a game-changing display from [Brandon Davies](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/brandon-davies/007870/) who stepped up big when it mattered most.

Davies nailed a triple to bring Partizan within 60-62 before scoring twice from inside to extend his team’s lead to 72-63. The veteran center netted 7 of his 12 points in the last 6 minutes of the game, as Olympiacos didn’t manage to counteract [Coach Zeljko Obradovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/par/obradovic-zeljko/)’s trick of playing together his two bigs, Davies and [Tyrique Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tyrique-jones/011981/). The other Jones, Carlik, also came to the fore, netting 9 of his team-high 15 points in the last 8 minutes, including a triple to put Partizan ahead, 63-62, with 5:51 to go.

“I think it was just our energy on defense,” [Carlik Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carlik-jones/013369/) told EuroLeague TV. “Diving on the floor for loose balls, boxing out. I think it started on that end and it gave us confidence on offense.”

A tough double-round week is around the corner for Partizan, as Zalgiris Kaunas and Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens visit Belgrade. The Serbian side will look to further build on their momentum and put together a streak that could turn their season around. Defense will be the key again, but Thursday’s game against Olympiacos could serve as a blueprint for Obradovic’s men.

Paris Basketball showed the mettle and resilience of a Turkish Airlines EuroLeague stalwart in an 81-78 win over Virtus Segafredo Bologna, as the competition’s debutant continued to impress and defy the odds.

Paris leaned on Shorts and Lo while subduing rampant Clyburn

[Paris Basketball](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/paris-basketball/roster/prs/) showed the mettle and resilience of a Turkish Airlines EuroLeague stalwart in an 81-78 win over [Virtus Segafredo Bologna](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/virtus-segafredo-bologna/roster/vir/), as the competition’s debutant continued to impress and defy the odds.

It was an eighth successive win for Paris in its first season in the EuroLeague, with the home team prevailing in a rugged and physical contest after preventing the visitors from forcing a final twist in the Adidas Arena.

Like so many times this season, Paris relied on [TJ Shorts](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tj-shorts/012608/) to deliver the goods and the livewire playmaker received vital support from fellow guard [Maodo Lo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/maodo-lo/007032/), as the duo joined forces to get the better of [Will Clyburn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/will-clyburn/004888/) who caught fire in the first half for Virtus.

Shorts struggled from inside for much of the contest, shooting 4-of-12, but was 2-of-2 from deep and sank a clutch fadeaway jumper in the final minute and dished out 9 assists to go with a team-high 19 points.

Lo chipped in with 16 points as he too bedazzled his markers with superior ball-handling skills which facilitated fast-paced offense. In addition, Nadir Hifi netted 11 points and Paris racked up a staggering 48 rebounds, of which 14 were on offense.

Crucially, the home team held Clyburn to a mere 5 points in the second half after the forward poured 20 in the first 20 minutes, 15 of them in the first quarter when Virtus raced to a 2-13 lead early on and looked capable of snapping the home team’s streak.

Tightly marked and unable to find open looks, Clyburn relied on his teammates after the interval, having made 8 of his 10 attempts in the opening half including 4 of 4 from downtown.

However, they missed a barrage of open shots from deep in the wake of aggressive defense from Paris, as the visitors hit a mere 9 of 29 from downtown. Shorts was delighted after a grueling battle although he acknowledged that Paris would be ill-advised to allow any complacency to creep into its ranks.   

“Once again another great feeling and another win. We’re on a high right now but we’ve got to stay focused,” he said in a courtside post-game interview. “You see how the game started, we weren’t on our identity but we’ve got to find ways to protect our home court and that’s what we did tonight.”

Paris head coach [Tiago Splitter](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/paris-basketball/prs/splitter-tiago/) was also pleased with the outcome after the home team nearly spilled a 77-63 lead in the home straight.

“There were a couple of things we could have done better at the end of the fourth quarter, but at the end of the day it’s a W and I’ll take it,” he said.

Next week, Paris faces a doubleheader on the road as they visit Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and then Olympiacos Piraeus, as the surprise package of the season aims to continue its dream start in Europe’s premier club competition.

It took double overtime, but Real Madrid managed to come out on top in the 37th edition of *El Clásico* this century after downing FC Barcelona 90-97 at Palau Blaugrana. Big players step up in the big games and that is what happened for *Los Blancos* in Round 12's Rivalry Series *game*, with Walter Tavares, Facundo Campazzo and Mario Hezonja all coming to the fore in crucial moments for the visitors, who won for the first time on the road this season after going 0-5 away from WiZink Center before Thursday night. For Barcelona, it has now lost three straight games in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

Tavares posted a 24-point, 18-rebound double-double and Campazzo also finished with an 18-point, 10-assist double-double, while Hezonja netted 23 points. For Barcelona, Kevin Punter netted 27 points, Jan Vesely scored 20 points, and Jabari Parker chipped in with 11 points.

Real Madrid got off to a good start and took a 4-8 lead on a pair of triples by Xavier Rathan-Mayes, before Hezonja added 4 points to put the visitors 6-14 ahead. Then, Vesely displayed his quality by scoring 8 points for Barcelona in an 8-2 run that got the hosts within reach of Los Blancos, 14-17. With 0.4 seconds remaining in the quarter, however, Youssoupha Fall fouled Serge Ibaka and was given a technical foul, which Real Madrid took advantage of to find itself 17-22 ahead after 10 minutes.

Dario Brizuela had an integral role in giving Barcelona its first lead since the opening basket, draining a three-pointer and then finding Juan Nunez for a layup to make it 24-22. The momentum was suddenly in the Azulgrana's favor, and the introduction of new signing Raul Neto paid immediate dividends with the Brazilian scoring 5 points in a hurry to set a 31-25 score. The energy of Justin Anderson was seeing him earn lots of plaudits from the crowd, and Barcelona netted the last 5 points of the quarter to take a 38-34 advantage into the break.

In the third quarter, Hezonja showed why he has the Super Mario nickname by scoring Real Madrid's first 12 points to give Chus Mateo's team a 45-46 lead. Campazzo's three capped a 10-0 Real Madrid run that made it a 45-49 ballgame, but back-to-back mid-range makes by Brizuela leveled the score. Barcelona went back in front after a hustle play by Brizuela resulted in Nunez finding Alex Abrines for a three-pointer, 52-51, but Hezonja responded to that triple by knocking down one of his own in the final score of the period, 52-54.

There was almost nothing to separate the two teams in the fourth quarter, as Vesely continued to cause headaches for Real Madrid and Punter started to get hot, scoring from mid-range, hitting a triple and going 3 for 3 from the line to put the Azulgrana 69-66 in front with 1:44 left. Tavares was leaving his fingerprints all over the game and three-point play with 52 seconds remaining made it 70-69, then Punter hit back by making 2 free throws to make it a three-point difference, 72-69. Tavares's layup with 9 seconds left made things interesting, 72-71, but Parker kept his cool from the line to knock down a pair of free throws. Yet, with 1 second left, Campazzo struck from three-point land to silence the Palau Blaugrana crowd and send the game to overtime, 74-74.

The first overtime session saw Real Madrid score the first four points, going 74-78 ahead, but Punter and Vesely refused to let the visitors pull away, combining to make it 78-79. A shootout followed, with Punter hitting a three-pointer, Tavares dunking, and Punter scoring from mid-range. Campazzo followed by scoring a layup, but Punter could only go 1 of 2 from the line, with the score 84-84 at the end of the first overtime period.

In the second overtime session, it was Barcelona that got off the mark first after Tavares was called for goaltending, but Hezonja scored a pretty turnaround jumper off the glass to make it 86-86, and Tavares's put-back dunk gave Real Madrid the lead at 87-88. Parker gave Barcelona fans hope with a three-pointer to nudge the hosts 90-89 ahead, but Real Madrid went on an 8-0 run with Campazzo scoring 4 to come away with a 90-97 victory.

Paris Basketball stretched its winning streak in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague to eight games after overcoming a slow start to beat visiting Virtus Segafredo Bologna 81-78 and improve to 9-3 in the premier club competition.

TJ Shorts again paced Paris with 19 points and 9 assists, Maodo Lo scored 15 points while Nadir Hifi added 11, propelling the home team in a vibrant atmosphere. At the other end, Will Clyburn led Virtus with a game-high 25 points but only 5 of them came in the second half. Isaia Cordinier netted 16 points for the visitors, who dropped to 2-10.

Virtus made a fast and furious start as it raced into a 2-13 lead, with Clyburn shooting the lights out from all over. However, Paris then beefed up its defense and closed in to 21-24 at the end of the first quarter, although Clyburn finished the opening period on 15 points.

The American forward showed no signs of slowing down as he mixed layups with long-range shots, but lack of support on offense coupled with a 12-0 run engineered by Paris turned the tide for good as it gave the hosts a 40-33 lead late in the second quarter.

Paris extended its advantage to 55-44 early in the third as Virtus struggled with Clyburn running out of steam, while the rest of the crew missed a flurry of open shots, which allowed the home team to head into the final 10 minutes 68-61 ahead. Center Ante Zizic kept Virtus afloat with 9 quickfire points in the third period, but Shorts and Lo pierced through the visiting team’s defense with dazzling ball control, which facilitated an avalanche of assists and layups at the other end.

It seemed Virtus was out for the count when Paris raced away into its biggest lead of the night midway through the fourth, 77-63, but the home team’s offense then came to a screeching halt while Virtus gathered momentum and went on a 0-12 run.

Shorts sank a crucial mid-range jumper to make it 80-75 and after Marco Belinelli hit a triple at the other end, Hifi split free throws to keep Paris ahead, 81-78. Belinelli missed a tough shot from the halfway line on the final buzzer, sparking loud celebrations among the home fans at Adidas Arena.

Maccabi opened the game with a 2-18 run and then pulled away for good at the end of the first half as Rokas Jokubaitis scored the first 8 points in the game on the way to a career-high 24 points plus 6 assists. Jaylen Hoard scored 18, David DeJulius had 14, while Will Rayman added 12 points in a winning effort. Matteo Spagnolo had 16 points for ALBA, Elias Rapieque scored 14 and Trevion Williams and Gabriele Procida contributed 10 apiece in a loss.

Jokubaitis scored the first 8 points of the game and Wenyen Gabriel blocked a pair of shots as Maccabi jumped to a 0-8 lead. Procida's dunk opened ALBA's account, but John DiBartolomeo and Hoard hit back-to-back three-pointers and Hoard scored two more baskets as the visitors extended the lead to 2-18. Ziga Samar and the newly-signed David McCormack gave ALBA life and a basket from Rapieque got ALBA within 14-25, but Hoard had a fastbreak dunk and DeJulius hit a buzzer-beating three to make it 16-32 after 10 minutes.

McCormack kept finding ways to score inside and the teams proceeded to trade baskets. Roman Sorkin had a layup on one side and a block on the other, but Malte Delow, Spagnolo and Procida got the hosts within 30-36. After Jasiel Rivero snapped an 8-0 run, Jokubaitis had a three-point play and DeJulius finished the half with 7 straight points, including a last-second three-pointer for a 36-52 halftime advantage.

Spagnolo and Procida got ALBA to a good second-half start, cutting it to 45-56. After baskets from Jokubaitis and Hoard, Jonas Mattiseck sank ALBA's first triple of the game and Procida made it 50-60. But Hoard answered with 5 points, including a triple, sparking a 2-15 run capped by a corner three from Rayman that opened a 52-75 lead.

The visitors took a 56-77 lead into the fourth quarter, which the two teams opened by trading triples. Rapieque sparked an 11-4 run that had ALBA within 78-90 with under 5 minutes to go, but Gabriel, Jokubaitis and Hoard sealed the outcome.
