LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne ground out a hard-fought 77-74 home win over Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade in Round 10 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, improving to 3-7 while the visitors dropped to 5-5.

Theo Maledon produced a majestic performance as he paced the home team with a game-high 26 points and veteran center Joffrey Lauvergne chipped in with 13 points and 10 boards, while David Lighty added 12 points for ASVEL.

At the other end, Filip Petrusev served up another fine display to lead Zvezda with 18 points and 7 boards, but the Serbian side fell short of completing a road treble over French opposition. Having beaten Paris Basketball 77-80 in Round 1, Zvezda also sank AS Monaco 90-98 earlier this week. Isaiah Canaan netted 14 points and Yago Dos Santos amassed 13 for the Serbian team, which threw away a 71-74 lead in the final minute as Maledon stepped up for ASVEL.

The game was played at frantic pace throughout as ASVEL carved out a 24-20 advantage at the end of the first quarter on the back of 8 points each from Maledon and Lighty, while Petrusev racked up 9 at the other end with Zvezda collecting 5 offensive boards.   

The hosts upped the tempo in the second as Lauvergne started causing Zvezda all sorts of problems in the paint and ASVEL romped away into a 43-32 halftime lead, shooting 5 of 9 from deep and winning the battle of the boards 18-13 in the opening half.

ASVEL kept its foot on the gas early in the third quarter and extended its lead to 47-34 before Zvezda replied with a 4-15 run on the back of 3 three-pointers from Canaan, who found his rage from downtown to haul his team back into the contest.

The home team appeared to be firmly in the driving seat early in the fourth after surging ahead 61-51, but Zvezda again hit back with a 0-11 streak to turn the tables and nose ahead. A tit-for-tat battle ensued in the home straight and the visiting team looked the more likely winner after Canaan hit a baseline triple to give it a 71-74 lead with 55 seconds left on the clock.

However, ASVEL had the last laugh as Nando De Colo sank a pair of free throws before Maledon buried a layup and then made no mistake from the foul line to make it 77-74. Milos Teodosic failed to force overtime from deep on Zvezda’s last possession, sparking loud celebrations among the home fans.

Bayern took control of the game with a 34-15 second quarter and never looked back in improving to 7-3 - including a 5-0 mark at home. The 62 points in the first half was a club record for Bayern and just 3 points off the EuroLeague best of 65 points. Bayern tied its club record with 18 three-pointers and was just 1 point shy of its scoring record.

Carsen Edwards led the way with 25 points, Devin Booker scored 18, Nick Weiler-Babb picked up 12 points and a career-high 11 assists and Andreas Obst had 11 points. ALBA was not able to match its effort from its Round 9 overtime win over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan as head coach Israel Gonzalez was still missing seven key players and fell to 2-8. Matteo Spagnolo set a new career high in points with 23 just two days after registering his previous best of 20 points. Trevion Williams collected 16 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals, and Yanni Wetzell and Elias Rapieque both added 11 points in the loss.

Booker started on fire for Bayern with 6 points and Obst and Edwards drained back-to-back triples as the hosts went up 14-6. While Booker moved to 11 points in the quarter, Spagnolo matched that with his own 11 points and Williams came on with a three-point play and 2 assists to help ALBA move ahead 23-24. Booker remained a force with a three-pointer and Bayern led 28-27 after 10 minutes. 

Shabazz Napier came on for the hosts in the second quarter with 2 three-pointers among his 8 points to get the advantage to 38-30. Spagnolo moved to 16 points for ALBA but Edwards went off with 3 triples within 51 seconds to start a 19-2 surge for a 59-38 lead. Edwards added a three-point play for 19 points in the first half, which ended with Bayern leading 62-42.

Bayern’s offense continued to cruise in the second half with Obst and Edwards hitting triples for a 74-47 lead. The hosts’ sharpshooters just kept shooting with Weiler-Babb draining three-pointers and Edwards making his 6th triple for an 85-54 advantage. Yam Madar and Obst each added another triple and then Oscar da Silva hit a buzzer-beater from beyond half-court for a 96-56 Bayern lead after 30 minutes.

ALBA tried to make the result a bit more respectable and opened the fourth quarter with the first 8 points. Williams and Ziga Samar helped ALBA trim the gap to 102-76 with about 4 minutes to play. The only question would be if Bayern would set a new club scoring record down the stretch but the team came up just 1 point short.

Mike James led the winners with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Elie Okobo added 15 points for Monaco. Chima Moneke and Tadas Sedekerskis paced Baskonia with 16 points apiece. Donta Hall added 12 and Nikos Rogkavopoulos had 11 for the hosts.

Hall got Baskonia going with a layup. Jaron Blossomgame followed a tip-in with a three-pointer for a 2-5 Monaco lead. Vitto Brown improved on Kamar Baldwin's layup with a bomb from downtown and James added an acrobatic basket. Brown soon added a corner triple to make it a double-digit game, 4-14. Matthew Strazel and James each struck from downtown and Alpha Diallo boosted the guests' lead to 5-22, after a 1-17 run. Rogkavopoulos stepped up with a layup that Diallo erased from the foul line to fix the score at 7-24 after 10 minutes.

Rogkavopoulos tried to ignite Baskonia's comeback with a put-back layup early in the second quarter. Okobo and Diallo, however, boosted the guests' lead to 9-28. Okobo erased Hall's one-handed put-back slam with a floater, then Georgios Papagiannis buried back-to-back triples and added a jumper to break the game open, 13-38. Hall dunked again and Rogkavopoulos improved on Jordan Loyd's circus shot with a bomb from beyond the arc. Donatas Motiejunas rescued Monaco with 5 quick points, getting help from Blossomgame to boost Monaco's lead to 20-47. Sedekerskis brought Baskonia closer, 20-47, at halftime.

James took over with a driving layup soon after the break. Moneke found his first points and Sedekerskis's corner triple gave Baskonia hope at 29-49. Moneke took over with a driving layup that Strazel bettered with a rainbow three-pointer. Luwawu-Cabarrot finished a three-chance Baskonia offense with a layup. Then Sedekerskis prompted the visitors to call timeout at 35-52. Loyd and Diallo each downed a triple to restore a 38-58 Monaco lead. A red-hot Moneke answered with back-to-back three-point plays and a pair of free throws to make it 46-58. Rogkavopoulos ignited the crowd with a four-point play, getting help from Hall and Kamar Baldwin to bring Baskonia much closer, 55-62, after 30 minutes.

Okobo sank a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter and erased Hall's put-back slam with a rainbow floater for a 57-66 Monaco lead. Loyd stepped up for the visitors and Okobo bettered Moneke's put-back layup with a three-point play. Baldwin scored off a spin move, but James and Loyd kept Monaco way ahead, 61-75, with 6 minutes left. James hit a scoop shot in the lane and buried a three-pointer that sealed the outcome, 61-80. Even though Baskonia never gave up, Monaco kept full control of the game and cruised to a well-deserved road victory.

The visitors started strong and led 24-29 heading into the second quarter, but Maccabi responded with a 13-0 run to secure a 53-42 cushion at halftime. Yet, Olympiacos tightened up its defense, outscored Maccabi 10-28 in the third and maintained its lead to secure its fifth consecutive victory. The Reds improved to 7-3, while Maccabi dropped to 3-7.

Sasha Vezenkov led all scorers with 21 points and Evan Fournier netted 20. Nikola Milutinov paired his 11 points with 8 rebounds, with Nigel Williams-Goss and Luca Vildoza scoring 10 each. Jaylen Hoard paced Maccabi with 20 points, Levi Randolph netted 15, Roman Sorkin had 13 and Tamir Blatt added 12.

Vildoza and Wenyen Gabriel traded scores inside before 5 points from Vezenkov and a corner triple from Fournier gave Olympiacos an early 2-10 lead. Blatt netted a jumper and Randolph drilled a triple, but Vezenkov added another 6 points to his tally and Moustapha Fall scored in the paint for a 12-20 cushion. A three-pointer from David DeJulius was followed by Milutinov’s first bucket of the night before Kostas Papanikolaou buried one from beyond the arc to make it 16-25. An exchange of blows followed from inside, as buckets from Saben Lee and DeJulius trimmed the deficit to 24-29 after 10 minutes.

Milutinov and Moses Wright opened the second quarter with back-to-back baskets, but Maccabi responded with a 7-0 run energized by an explosive Gabriel to make it 31-33. Olympiacos replied with Wright netting a hook and Tyler Dorsey completing a three-point play to restore a 31-38 lead. Maccabi fought back and went on a 13-0 run inspired by Jokubaitis, Hoard and Randolph, who dominated in the paint against the opposing forwards. Sorkin nailed a triple and William Rayman scored a put-back basket before a triple from Lee allowed Maccabi to take a 53-42 lead into the second half.

Thomas Walkup started the third with a midrange jumper, but 4 points from Sorkin gave Maccabi a 57-44 lead. A Vildoza triple was followed by Fournier’s three-point play before another triple from the former brought Olympiacos within 59-55. Gabriel netted inside, but 7 points from Fournier put Olympiacos ahead, 61-62. The visitors tightened up their defense and ran in transition, extending their run to 2-13 for a 63-70 cushion after 30 minutes.

Nigel Williams-Goss and Vildoza scored inside but 4 points from Randolph and a bucket from Hoard trimmed the deficit to 71-74. Buckets from Milutinov and Fournier sandwiched a Sorkin triple before a three-point play from Williams-Goss opened a 76-81 margin. Yet, Rayman nailed one from deep and Hoard made 2 from the line to bring Maccabi within 81-82 with 2:47 remaining. A Fournier triple was followed by a layup from Jokubaitis in transition, but Williams-Goss drilled a corner three-pointer to restore an 83-88 lead. 

After Blatt responded with a midrange jumper, a hard-fought Milutinov bucket inside made it 85-90 with a minute left on the clock. Then, Sorkin netted 3 free throws to make it a 2-point game, but Vezenkov hit from the charity stripe to make it a two-possession duel, 88-92, with 16 seconds to go. Blatt nailed a quick triple before Vezenkov scored free throws for a 91-94 cushion with 0:10 left. In Maccabi’s last possession of the game, Lee missed from deep to seal the outcome.

Although KK Partizan ended up losing to FC Barcelona in Round 9, Mitar Bosnjakovic and Aleksej Pokusevski were two bright spots for the Serbian team.

Youngsters give Partizan hope despite fresh loss

It may seem hard to believe in the wake of a fifth consecutive victory that leaves the team struggling near the foot of the standings with a 2-7 record, but Wednesday night’s home defeat to [FC Barcelona](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/fc-barcelona/bar/) may just have witnessed the birth of a new and improved version of [Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/par/).

It certainly didn’t feel that way midway through the third quarter, when coach Zeljko Obradovic’s pleas for his team to show some energy had fallen on deaf ears. Instead, Barcelona had stretched a 14-point halftime lead into a seemingly impregnable 23-point advantage, 40-63, as Partizan scored precisely zero field goals in the first five minutes of the third period.

The crowd inside Belgrade Arena had fallen unusually silent, with the visitors looking in cruise control and Partizan offering no indication that it was even going to muster much resistance. But then, bit by bit, came the comeback.

It started from the foul line, as Partizan netted 13 free throws without a miss in the third period. Then, with confidence boosted by that steady trickle of points, the Serbian team finally started to find its shooting range.

A three-pointer from [Carlik Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carlik-jones/013369/) to finish the third period was followed by the same player netting a layup-and-one to start the fourth, followed by a pair of scores from debutant [Mitar Bosnjakovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mitar-bosnjakovic/012167/). Then came a trio of triples, supplied by [Duane Washington](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/duane-washington/013370/), [Frank Ntilikina](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/frank-ntilikina/006591/) and [Aleksej Pokusevski](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/aleksej-pokusevski/008232/), all accompanied by swarming defense which restricted Barcelona to 2 points in 6 minutes, and somehow Partizan had turned a 23-point deficit into a single possession game and a chance to snatch an unlikely win.

That did not happen, because Barcelona eventually found enough offense in the final possessions to come away with [a 79-87 victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/barcelona-back-in-first-place-after-downing-partizan-79-87/), but the fact that Partizan had at least made it close allowed the loud and loyal home faithful to come away from the game with a degree of optimism.

Tellingly, two players at the center of the comeback were a pair of local youngsters: 18-year-old swingman Bosnjakovic and forward Pokusevski, 22, whose spirited efforts suggested they could become the heart and soul of a team that is understandably still very much in development after a dozen summer signings.

The prominence of Pokusevski is no surprise. This is, after all, the youngest-ever player to represent [Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/oly/) in the EuroLeague, with an NBA triple-double under his belt, who can already be regarded as a veteran even now, a month short of his 23rd birthday. In truth, it’s surprising that his 12 points against Barcelona represented a season high, and Pokusevski should go from strength to strength as the season continues.

Bosnjakovic, however, was a curveball selection in the starting five from the old master Obradovic. The 18-year-old had never previously set foot on a EuroLeague court, but looked totally unfazed as he scored the first basket of the game and continued to impress throughout his debut, which ended with very solid totals of 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in 19 minutes on the floor.

A two-time winner of the Adidas Next Generation Tournament during his time as a young player with [Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/real-madrid/mad/), Bosnjakovic was already a well-known figure to close followers of underage European basketball. Now he is stepping up to senior level, and already looks like he belongs.

If he can continue to progress, and takes Pokusevski along for the ride, Partizan’s new nucleus could very soon take shape.

His round-high 38 PIR is a new personal high in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, surpassing the 36 PIR that saw him take home Round 17 MVP honors in the 2022-23 season – the only other time he has been the MVP of the Round. Petrusev ended up tying his career high in scoring with 25 points, the same total he managed in that Round 17 contest, after going 4 of 6 on two-pointers, 2 of 3 from three-point range and 11 for 11 on free throws. His 7 rebounds are a season high, of which 2 came on the offensive end, and he also had 1 assist, 1 steal and drew 11 fouls, the most of any player this season. In addition, Petrusev’s 38 PIR is the joint highest index rating recorded this season, level with Paris Basketball’s TJ Shorts, who earned Round 5 MVP honors with his 38 PIR night which also came at Monaco.

In second place is LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne’s [Theo Maledon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/theo-maledon/007027/), who set a new career best with a 37 PIR but ended up on the losing side in a 94-92 defeat at Olympiacos Piraeus. Maledon beat his previous-best mark of 36, which came in Round 4 of this current season. The French guard erupted for a career-high 31 points, making 4-of-9 two-pointers, 4-of-8 three-pointers and 11-of-12 free throws, as well as grabbing 7 rebounds, dishing 5 assists, making 1 steal and drawing 10 fouls. 

Third on the list is ALBA Berlin center [Trevion Williams](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/trevion-williams-/012604/) with a 33 PIR, also a career best. In an epic 105-101 win over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, a game that saw ALBA missing eight players, Williams netted a career-high 23 points on 7-of-10 two-pointers, 1-of-1 three-pointers and 6-of-8 free throws, in addition to recording a season-high tying 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 5 drawn fouls. 

Milan duo [Zach LeDay](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/zach-leday/008987/) and [Nikola Mirotic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nikola-mirotic/000796/) complete the best performers in Round 9, each setting new season highs with a 32 PIR. Mirotic had a 28-point, 10-rebound double-double and also dished 1 assist, while LeDay scored a season-best 23 points, pulled down 5 rebounds, made 1 assist and recorded 1 steal.

The Reds held on for an exciting victory over ASVEL on Tuesday thanks to another strong performance from [Evan Fournier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/evan-fournier/013380/), who's averaged 20.3 points in the last three games. The Israeli champ fell to a fifth loss in six games by fading away in the fourth quarter at Panathinaikos earlier this week and needs to improve defensively after allowing 33 points in the last 10 minutes of that defeat. [Roman Sorkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/roman-sorkin/011219/) continued his solid season by contributing 21 points in Athens along with 5 offensive rebounds and that ability to gain extra possessions could be crucial against an increasingly confident Olympiacos, which has passed the 90-point mark in the last three games.

### LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne vs. Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade (20:00 CET)

Zvezda (5-4) will look for its second road of the week against an ASVEL team (2-7) that must quickly lift its spirits after suffering a narrow loss at Olympiacos in Round 9. The French team will be powered by [Theo Maledon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/theo-maledon/007027/), whose remarkable performance of 31 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in Piraeus further cemented his status as one of the league’s most exciting talents. German rivals will battle for supremacy as Bayern (6-3) looks to recover the winning feeling with a visit from ALBA (2-7). The teams experienced contrasting emotions earlier in the week, with Bayern falling to Fenerbahce’s second half whirlwind in Istanbul while ALBA overcame a long injury list to claim a thrilling overtime win against Milan. Talented guard [Matteo Spagnolo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/matteo-spagnolo/008173/) showcased his qualities by pairing 20 points with 9 assists, and now he will confront league leading scorer [Carsen Edwards](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carsen-edwards/011987/) (20.6 points per game). Two of Tuesday’s losing teams will look to get back into winning ways as Baskonia (4-5) hosts Monaco (5-4). Home team sharpshooter [Markus Howard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/markus-howard/011948/) will be particularly motivated following his scoreless performance in the Round 9 loss to Efes, and his presence will sharpen the need of Monaco to improve defensively after allowing 98 points in its defeat against Zvezda. Efes earned its Round 9 victory at Baskonia largely thanks to an excellent team defense, which must now attempt to contain the playmaking abilities of [Facu Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/). The Argentine – who ranks second in the league for assists – dished 9 helpers to orchestrate Real’s victory over Virtus on Tuesday, which also featured 17 points on 5-of-10 three-point shooting from the increasingly important [Xavier Rathan-Mayes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/xavier-rathan-mayes/013378/). It’s a big night for Efes center [Vincent Poirier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/vincent-poirier/004887/), who had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks in Tuesday’s win at Baskonia to perfectly prepare him for a bone-crunching heavyweight battle with his former partner in the paint, [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/).

### Zalgiris Kaunas vs. Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (19:00 CET)

Get ready for an intense battle in Kaunas as Zalgiris (6-3) welcomes co-leader Fenerbahce (7-2). The Turkish team has strung together a four-game winning run thanks to the stellar form of [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/), who has averaged 23.5 points during that stretch, and limiting the influence of the former Zalgiris forward will clearly be an emphasis for home team coach Andrea Trinchieri. The Lithuanian team has lost two straight after falling at Paris on Wednesday night partly due to a terrible night of three-point shooting, and [Sylvain Francisco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/sylvain-francisco/007975/) will look to return to form after going 0-of-8 from beyond the arc in the French capital. Arnas Butkevicius had a strong game with 12 points and 9 rebounds, and Zalgiris will look to use him to control the game in the paint and slow Fenerbahce down.

Panathinaikos (6-3) will target a second win of the week as it travels to lowly Virtus (2-7), which is now three wins adrift of the top ten. Two of the most decorated coaches in European basketball history are looking for an upturn in fortunes as Zeljko Obradovic’s struggling Partizan (2-7) hosts Ettore Messina’s Milan (3-6). Both teams are coming off losses, with Partizan falling against Barca on Wednesday despite backcourt leadership from [Carlik Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carlik-jones/013369/), who is taking the reins of the team with 12 points and 4.4 assists per night. Two of the league's hottest teams go head-to-head in a first-ever meeting between Barcelona (7-2) and Paris (6-3). Wednesday's triumph at Partizan was a seventh in eight games for Barca, while the same night saw Paris overcome Zalgiris for a fifth straight success. The game features an exciting backcourt showdown between the silky scoring skills of [Kevin Punter](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kevin-punter/009862/) (18.1 ppg.) and the unstoppable speed of [TJ Shorts](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tj-shorts/012608/) (17 ppg., 7.3 apg.). Paris Basketball is in just its first year in the EuroLeague, but it shows a grit and determination often associated with teams with many years of experience under their belt.

Paris is already looking like a EuroLeague mainstay

Winning a game in the highly competitive Turkish Airlines EuroLeague is anything but an easy task.

Securing victories in as many as six tight affairs by beating each of the opponents by single digits is another thing altogether, let alone as the competition’s debutant team. That shows some strong character from both the players and coaching staff, and that’s precisely what [Paris Basketball](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/paris-basketball/prs/) has demonstrated this term.

A slow start with two straight defeats was followed by Paris’s first-ever EuroLeague victory in Round 3, which came against the reigning champion in Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, no less. If coach Tiago Splitter’s side sent a message with that result, the way that his men bounced back from a narrow 109-107 defeat at FC Bayern Munich has been remarkable, with Paris notching five straight victories to improve to a 6-3 record, joint second best in the EuroLeague.

“The guys are really buying in and playing hard every night,” Coach Splitter told EuroLeague TV after [Wednesday night’s 83-77 victory over Zalgiris Kaunas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/paris-beats-zalgiris-83-77-for-fifth-straight-win/). “This is just a display of their discipline, how hard they play and how togetherness is a big value in the team.”

After narrowly outscoring Zalgiris 17-16 in the first quarter, Paris pushed to pull away in the second. Yet, Zalgiris, which came into the game ranking fifth in offensive rebounds with 12.4 per game, picked up as many as 9 boards that offered the guests scores off second-chance opportunities. Paris still managed to take a 40-36 lead into the second half, when the hosts protected the boards and outrebounded Zalgiris 21-14 to control the rhythm of the game.

“In the second quarter we could see that a lot of the reason why they were staying in the game was the second-chance opportunities,” [Kevarrius Hayes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kevarrius-hayes/010390/), who paired his 10 points with a season-high 9 rebounds against his former team, admitted. “We cut that down, we were able to secure the rebounds and get out in open court and it really worked out in our favor.”

Having recorded six victories with an average difference of just over 5 points, Paris has shown that it has what it takes to look in the eye of any opponent in the competition. The 2023-24 BKT EuroCup winner now has a tough assignment to keep this streak going as on Friday it is off to Spain, where it will face the current EuroLeague co-leader in FC Barcelona (7-2).
