Despite missing eight first-team players due to injury, ALBA Berlin managed to beat Olimpia Milano 105-101 in overtime in Round 9 of the 2024-25 EuroLeague season.

Undermanned ALBA showed incredible fight to beat Milan in OT, 105-101

The odds were truly stacked against ALBA Berlin heading into its Round 9 clash against EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, with the German side missing eight first-team regulars due to injury. Yet, Israel Gonzalez’s side pulled off the unthinkable by going on to beat the Italian opponent 105-101 in overtime at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Tuesday night. As a result of this scoreline, ALBA improved to 2-7 and Milan dropped to 3-6.

Most of ALBA’s scoring came courtesy of four men, with Gabriele Procida (29 points), Trevion Williams (23), Jonas Mattisseck (21) and Matteo Spagnolo (20) all netting 20 points or more. All four players recorded career highs in scoring. Williams also grabbed 11 rebounds to give him a double-double, with this being the third game this season that he has pulled down a double-digit number of boards. 

Two 18-year-olds, Dorian Grosber and Amon Doerries, made their EuroLeague debuts in this game, while another 18-year-old, Anton Nufer, had played just 2:48 minutes in the competition and more than doubled that total in Round 9.

For Milan, Nikola Mirotic had a 28-point, 10-rebound double-double, Zach LeDay netted 23 points, Neno Dimitrijevic added 14, and Stefano Tonut finished with 10.

There was plenty of scoring in the early going as Milan went 3 for 3 on triples to take an early 2-9 lead, but ALBA started to find its feet and managed to go 13-11 ahead after back-to-back triples by Procida and Mattisseck. However, that would prove to be the last time ALBA was ahead for quite some time. LeDay was causing all sorts of problems for the ALBA defense and helped spur an 11-0 run that put Milan in the driving seat, 13-22. Spagnolo came to the fore late in the first quarter by scoring 6 points to cut the deficit to four points, 19-23, at the end of the period.

Procida’s layup to start the second quarter made it a one-possession ballgame, 21-23, but Milan continued to find ways to keep ALBA at arm’s length, first through Mirotic and then via Armoni Brooks and Tonut. Still, the visitors were unable to pull away, and Procida leveled the score at 31-31 after capitalizing on a Fabien Causeur to score a fast-break layup. That only seemed to rile up Milan, which reeled off 10 straight points to make it 31-41. That distance more or less remained in check the rest of the way before halftime, with Milan leading 43-55 at the break.

It became the Italian show for ALBA once the third quarter got underway as Procida and Spagnolo combined to devastating effect to reduce the gap to five points, 52-57. Milan reestablished its double-digit advantage through Causeur, Dimitrijevic and LeDay, with the score swelling to 55-68, but there was a good response by ALBA. In particular, Mattisseck and Williams really stood up on the offensive end to make Milan uncomfortable once more, then Procida’s layup with the final play of the period reduced the gap to eight points, 69-77.

The fight that ALBA showed throughout showed no signs of slowing down, even if the hosts were missing several key players, and it was Mattisseck and Rapieque who helped get the German side within touching distance of Milan, 80-83. Williams kept thriving inside and Spagnolo was getting more involved, with his jumper making it 84-86. Williams twice helped ALBA get within two points of the visitors, 86-88 and 88-90, but it was Spagnolo’s layup and then Tim Schneider’s 2 made free throws that saw Coach Gonzalez’s men finally level it up at 92-92 and send the game to overtime.

In what seemed like a good omen, Mirotic fouled Williams on the tip, giving ALBA a 94-92 advantage and its first lead since it was 13-11 in the first quarter. Mirotic didn’t take long to tie the game once more, but Procida’s three-point play and Schneider’s wing three had visiting coach Ettore Messina sweating on the sideline, 100-94. Tonut reduced the deficit with a perfect trip to the line, 100-96, but Mattisseck caused the roof to come off Mercedes-Benz Arena with his fifth triple on the night, 103-96. Even when Nico Mannion hit a three-pointer with 23 seconds left to make it 103-101, Procida kept his cool from the line with 6 seconds remaining as ALBA came away with a memorable 105-101 triumph.

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens returned to winning ways with a hard-fought home win over Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, 93-87, having trailed for the lion’s share of the contest before hitting top gear in the last 4 minutes in Round 9 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens returned to winning ways with a hard-fought home win over Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, 93-87, having trailed for the lion’s share of the contest before hitting top gear in the last 4 minutes in Round 9 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

Kendrick Nunn paced Panathinaikos with 21 points and 4 assists, while Mathias Lessort racked up 18 points and 6 boards. Cedi Osman and Juancho Hernangomez chipped in with 12 points each while Jerian Grant added 11 for the home team, which improved to 6-3 as it bounced back from last week’s Greek derby defeat at the hands of eternal rival Olympiacos Piraeus.

At the other end, Roman Sorkin led Maccabi with 21 points and 7 boards. Jaylen Hoard amassed 14 points and 5 rebounds and Rokas Jokubaitis netted 13 points for the visitors, who dropped to 3-6 after suffering their fifth defeat in the last six games.

Maccabi made a tremendous start and caused the Greens all sorts of problems inside, with Hoard doing the damage early on as the home team’s incensed head coach Ergin Ataman called a timeout inside the first minute of the game. Maccabi led 21-25 at the end of the first quarter as it sank 10 of 13 shots from two-point range while Panathinaikos committed 5 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.

The hosts closed the gap to 27-29 early in the second but Maccabi held firm and engineered its biggest lead of the night, 33-45, late in the first half before Panathinaikos managed to trim its deficit to 37-47 at halftime. The misfiring hosts shot 2 of 10 from deep in the opening 20 minutes, having also committed 10 turnovers while losing the battle of the boards 11-15.

Panathinaikos came up with an 8-0 run early in the third to close in on the visiting team, 49-51, but stubborn Maccabi refused to relinquish its lead and headed into the final 10 minutes 60-63 ahead, although Lessort made some big plays in the pain to keep his team’s challenge alive.

Maccabi looked the more likely winner when a 0-8 run at the start of the fourth gave the visitors a 60-71 lead, but Panathinaikos once again dug deep into its vast resources to flip the script and come out on top. With Nunn and Lessort carrying the effort, Hernangomez and Osman joined the party with clutch shots from downtown as Panathinaikos nosed ahead for the first time, 79-76, with 4 minutes left on the clock.

Maccabi was still in it before a Lessort blitz basically sealed the contest, as the big man did it all in less than 60 seconds several plays later. He sank a pair of free throws to make it 86-82, then smothered a defensive rebound and finally dished out a pass to Hernangomez to nail a triple that effectively forced Maccabi into submission. The visitors battled hard to force a final twist but it never came as ice-cool free throw shooting in the final minute saw Panathinaikos grab a precious win in its bid to stay in the playoff picture.

Anadolu Efes Istanbul earned a crucial victory in the early fight for the play-in spots as it knocked off Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz 84-89 on the road to hand the Spanish side its first home defeat. Efes entered the game in 10th place and wasted a 15-point lead, but improved to 5-4 including a 4-1 road record.

Elijah Bryant scored 20 points to go with 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners, who also saw Darius Thompson pour in 18 points and Rodrigue Beaubois drain 5 three-pointers for 16 points.

Baskonia, which was 11th coming into the contest, fell to 4-5 including 4-1 at Buesa Arena. Chima Moneke paced the hosts with 22 points and Khalifa Diop had 13 points and 9 rebounds. Markus Howard missed all four of his three-point attempts in going scoreless - just the second time in 80 games that he failed to score a point after Round 26 in 2022-23 against Valencia in just 7:26 minutes. 

Beaubois started the game hot with a three-pointer for a 0-5 lead. Ousmane Ndiaye knocked down 2 triples at the other end and Trent Forrest had 4 points as Baskonia led 16-12. Beaubois drained his third and fourth three-pointers of the quarter in a 0-10 Efes run to pull ahead 16-22. Baskonia finished the quarter strong and was down 21-24.

Baskonia was still close at 24-29 when Efes’s defense held tough and Bryant and Stanley Johnson knocked down triples in a 5-15 run for a 29-44 cushion. Baskonia went into the locker room on a high note with a 10-2 close of the first half thanks to 5 points from Nikos Rogkavopoulos to trail 39-46.

Baskonia retained the momentum from the end of the first half and held Efes scoreless for more than 5 minutes. Moneke converted a three-point play and Kamar Baldwin drained a triple in a 12-0 start to the third quarter for a 51-46 lead. Efes countered with three and-ones of its own and Thompson knocked down back-to-back threes as the visitors went up 61-63. The score was 63-65 after 30 minutes.

Efes drained 3 three-pointers and was ahead 70-74 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. The visitors went cold again and Baskonia answered with the next 7 points to lead 77-74. Efes punched back with 4 straight points to move back ahead and start a string of five lead changes with Thompson hitting a triple with 80 seconds left to make it 82-83. Bryant followed with a layup off the glass and Efes went up 82-85 with 28 seconds remaining. After Moneke and Bryant swapped free throws, Moneke was called for an offensive foul with 8 seconds left to give Efes the win.

The hosts were trailing for most of the game, but managed to mow down ASVEL in the last 3 minutes of the game. With the win, Olympiacos improved its record to 6-3. Despite its huge effort in Piraeus, ASVEL fell to 2-7.

Sasha Vezenkov paced Olympiacos with 21 points and Evan Fournier netted 20. Nikola Milutinov chipped in with 13 points and 7 rebounds for a team-high PIR of 26.

An extraordinary Theo Maledon led all scorers with a career-high 31 points, with Joffrey Lauvergne and Shaquille Harrison netting 16 and 15 points, respectively. Mbaye Ndiaye recorded 11 points and David Lighty added 10 in a losing effort.

Fournier and Vezenkov netted from inside, but Lighty scored ASVEL’s first 5 points of the game and Maledon nailed two straight triples for a 6-11 lead. Fournier’s triple was followed by Maledon’s layup. Kostas Papanikolaou drilled a corner three to bring Olympiacos within 12-13. Baskets from Lauvergne sandwiched a Milutinov bucket, as ASVEL extended its lead to 14-19. The visitors fired on all cylinders, with Maledon and Ndiaye drilling back-to-back triples for a 16-25 cushion. Then, Harrison and Tarik Black netted in the paint to open an 18-29 margin.  Moses Wright and Thomas Walkup made 3 free throws each, cutting the difference to 24-29 after 10 minutes.

Alec Peters opened the second quarter with a triple, but Maledon responded with a layup to make it 27-31. Harrison and Peters traded baskets before Charles Kahudi nailed a high-flying layup to maintain a 29-35 lead. Lauvergne completed a three-point play and then nailed a triple, with an Ndiaye slam giving ASVEL a 31-43 cushion. Yet, Olympiacos reacted, as 4 points from Milutinov and 2 triples from Luca Vildoza brought the hosts within 41-43. Yet, a Harrison dunk off a steal was followed by a triple from Ndiaye for a 42-50 lead at the break.

Moustapha Fall netted Olympiacos’s first 7 points of the third quarter to bring the hosts within 49-54. ASVEL responded with Lighty scoring 5 points and Harrison nailing a layup that extended the visitors’ lead to 49-61. Vezenkov took over with a triple and two buckets from inside to bring Olympiacos within 58-63. Maledon and Fournier exchanged triples before Vezenkov completed a three-point play to trim the deficit to 65-67. Then, Harrison and Kahudi netted inside, but a deep triple from Fournier cut the difference to 71-73 heading into the closing quarter.

Fournier and Kahudi exchanged buckets before Milutinov made 2 from the line to bring Olympiacos within 75-76. But Maledon was cooking, as he netted a triple before completing a three-point play for a 77-82 lead. Fournier and Lauvergne then traded baskets from inside before a corner triple from Walkup and a Vezenkov bucket tied it at 84-84. Lauvergne dunked off a pick-and-roll play, but Walkup netted a big three and Fournier scored a long two-pointer to give Olympiacos an 89-86 cushion with 1:40 left on the clock. After Nigel Williams-Goss nailed 2 free throws, a triple from Ndiaye made it 92-89 with 0:47 remaining. Fournier made a couple of free throws before Maledon went 3-for-3 from the line, but it wasn’t enough for ASVEL to stun Olympiacos.

Filip Petrusev dominated with 25 points – including 11 of 11 free-throw shooting – and Codi Miller-McIntyre added 20 points for the winners. Isaiah Canaan knocked down 3 three-pointers in scoring 11 and Nikola Kalinic contributed 8 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for Zvezda. Elie Okobo and Mike James each netted 20 in defeat and Donatas Motiejunas and Jordan Loyd scored 10 points apiece.

Donatas Motiejunas banked in a hook shot and James took a steal in for a layup as Monaco took charge. Nikola Kalinic put the visitors on the scoreboard only to see threes by Vitto Brown and Jordan Loyd make it 10-2, prompting a Zvezda timeout. Kalinic came to the rescue with a triple and soon a slam by Uros Plavnic and 4 points by Miller-McIntyre had Zvezda within 15-11. The Zvezda guard then tied the score at 16-16 with a three-pointer. Petrusev heated up and gave the visitors their first lead, 20-21, with a three-point play. Georgios Papagiannis evened things at 26-26 after 10 minutes.

Okobo and Petrusev swapped threes in the first minute of the second quarter, which gave Petrusev 10 points on the night. Petr Cornelie, making his first appearance of the season, attacked the basket for a three-point play and Loyd buried a jumper as Monaco went back ahead. Petrusev and Isaiah Canaan kept Zvezda close, while Okobo continued to generate offense for the hosts. Yago Dos Santos’s first score drew Zvezda within 41-39 midway through the quarter. Matthew Strazel scored the next 5 points for Monaco before Canaan answered with his third three of the night. Monaco twice extended the lead back out to 8 before Nemanja Nedovic’s steal and layup made it 54-48 at the break.

Rokas Giedraitis beat the shot clock with a three from the corner and Miller-McIntyre sank free throws to trim Zvezda’s deficit to 56-53 early in the second half. Soon after, the latter’s stutter move evened the game at 60-60. Despite another basket from Okobo, Petrusev’s three-pointer gave Zvezda the lead, 62-63, midway through the third quarter. Miller-McIntyre added a three-point play in transition before James answered with a jumper for Monaco. The teams traded points for several minutes and Zvezda held its slim lead until Okobo beat the third-quarter buzzer with a jumper that tied the score at 74-74.

Luka Mitrovic nosed Zvezda back in front and Milos Teodosic added a three-pointer. His next three gave Zvezda a promising 76-84 cushion. Motiejunas revived the hosts, but Petrusev kept Zvezda humming. Loyd connected from deep to get the hosts within 4 with 3 minutes remaining, however Petrusev continued to shine for Zvezda with a rebound and 2 more free throws. A triple by Canaan with 2 minutes left was another blow to Monaco. Giedraitis made it 85-94. Miller-McIntyre fouled out and James scored 5 points as Monaco tried to chase down the visitors, but it was too little, too late, as Petrusev put the game on ice.

In a battle atop the EuroLeague standings, Fenerbahce Beko grabbed its fourth consecutive victory by downing FC Bayern Basketball 87-76 at home in Round 9 on Tuesday.

In a battle atop the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague standings, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul grabbed its fourth consecutive victory by downing FC Bayern Munich 87-76 at home in Round 9 on Tuesday evening.

Fenerbahce improved to 7-2 in the standings while Bayern dropped to 6-3. Nigel Hayes-Davis led the winners with 25 points, with all of his points coming in the second half. Devon Hall added 12 and 7 assists, and Tarik Biberovic and Bonzie Colson both had 11 points each. Carsen Edwards paced Bayern with 24 points, Devin Booker added 20 and Oscar da Silva had 10.

Colson got Fenerbahce going with a close-range jumper which Booker improved with a three-pointer for a 2-3 Bayern lead. Hall stepped up for the hosts, then Edwards followed a fadeaway jumper with a triple before finding Booker for a one-handed slam, good for a 7-10 Bayern lead. Edwards kept pacing the guests with a driving layup, getting help from Booker to boost their team's lead to 9-16. Andreas Obst Improved Hall's fadeaway jumper with a bomb from downtown, then Elias Harris made it a double-digit game, 11-21. Marko Guduric brought Fenerbahce within 13-21 after 10 minutes.

Guduric scored in penetration early in the second quarter and Nicolo Melli's jumper gave Fenerbahce hope at 17-21. Sertac Sanli erased Harris's layup with a dunk and added a three-pointer that made Bayern call a timeout at 22-23. Colson completed Fenerbahce's comeback with a three-pointer which Melli followed with a fast-break dunk for a 27-23 lead. Khem Birch capped a mammoth 18-2 run with a layup, then Booker dunked at the other end. Arturs Zagars found his first points, da Silva scored in the low post and Colson's step-back jumper boosted the hosts' lead to 33-27. Nick Weiler-Babb took over with a three-point play and Hall's reverse layup fixed the halftime score at 35-30. 

Booker buried a three-pointer soon after the break and Obst copied him right after to tie it at 37-37. Hayes-Davis joined the three-point shootout and Sanli added a backdoor layup to restore a 42-37 Fenerbahce lead. Booker, Edwards and Guduric each scored around the basket, and Hayes-Davis insisted for beyond the arc. Edwards sank a corner triple to keep Bayern as close as 47-44. Weiler-Babb and Hayes-Davis traded layups, Booker dunked again and Melli's three-pointer gave the hosts a 52-48 margin. Da Silva scored down low and Edwards buried another three-pointer but a red-hot Hayes-Davis kept Fenerbahce in charge, 57-53. Shabazz Napier hit a triple, Melli downed a turnaround jumper and Hall struck from downtown for a 62-48 score. Hayes-Davis followed a driving layup with a bomb from beyond the arc that boosted his team's lead to 67-58 after 30 minutes.

An unstoppable Hayes-Davis banked in a jumper early in the fourth quarter and added his fifth three-pointer to break the game open, 72-58. Da Silva scored in transition and Booker silenced the crowd with a dunk, then Biberovic rescued Fenerbahce with back-to-back bombs from beyond the arc. Da Silva found space for a backdoor slam and added a turnaround jumper, getting help from Edwards to keep Bayern within 80-70 with over 3 minutes left. Biberovic and Edwards exchanged driving layups and Hayes-Davis buried a jumper that sealed the outcome, 84-72, in the penultimate minute.

FC Bayern Basketball finds itself joint top of the EuroLeague standings after reeling off five straight wins, and there is plenty to like about Gordon Herbert's side eight games into the season.

Bayern Munich is showing that it is the real deal

After winning on the road at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne last Friday night, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul coach Sarunas Jasikevicius wondered out loud if there’s any team this early in the 2024-25 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season that is truly playing at the top of their game.

“I don’t know who’s playing really good basketball, probably expect Bayern \[Munich\], right now,” Jasikevicius said to EuroLeague TV.

That was quite a well-deserved recognition by Saras, who funnily enough is the next coach that Bayern will face. Results and numbers don’t often lie and, according to them, he could not be more right.

Almost 24 hours before that statement, [FC Bayern Munich](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/fc-bayern-munich/mun/?season=2024-25) had [defeated Zalgiris Kaunas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/bayern-holds-off-zalgiris-77-74-to-climb-atop-the-table/) to extend its league-best streak to 5-0 – the first-ever time the German team has won five straight games in the EuroLeague – and improve to 6-2 in the process. One of the main ways that these victories have been secured is through high-paced, pretty basketball.

Here comes another double-round week! Everybody wins, as there will be loads of great Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games and a double chance to win in the [EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge](https://euroleaguefantasy.euroleaguebasketball.net/).

Instead of going for the obvious superstars, I have some recommendations that could help give you the edge in private leagues and the overall standings. Here are my recommendations for Rounds 9 and 10.

EuroLeague Fantasy tips: Rounds 9-10

### Toko Shengelia, Virtus Segafredo Bologna (14.9 credits)

[Toko Shengelia](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tornike-shengelia/001133/) earned October MVP honors last season, but he has taken off later in the current 2024-25 campaign and is playing at his best level of late, averaging 20.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and a PIR of 20.3 in the last three games. After Virtus started out 0-5, Shengelia has come to the fore in recent weeks to help his team improve to a 2-6 record. With against Real Madrid and Panathinaikos this week, expect Shengelia to get a lot of the ball, making him a good option in fantasy.

### Carlik Jones, Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade (13.8 credits)

[Carlik Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carlik-jones/013369/) came close to recording a triple-double last week during Partizan’s loss at Paris, getting 20 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists. Those are outstanding numbers when your team is limited to 71 points, so expect Jones to stay consistent now that he seems fully adjusted to the competition. His games against Barcelona and Milan should be a strong test.

When it comes to the EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge, unlike in real-life basketball, [Shaq McKissic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shaquielle-mckissic/007853/) always lacked consistency. He has improved in that aspect this season, however, getting a double-digit PIR in six out of eight games this season. In the last three, McKissic has averaged 11.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and a PIR of 14.7. Great numbers for less than 10.0 credits, so expect him to keep up this level against ASVEL and Maccabi.

### Juancho Hernangomez, Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens (12.7 credits)

Speaking of adjustments, [Juancho Hernangomez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/juancho-hernangomez/012712/) is showcasing his best basketball this season, making the most out of his versatility and deep range. In the last three games, Hernangomez has posted 12.7 points on 5-of-9 three-pointers, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals and a PIR of 18.3. He has played an average of almost 35 minutes over the last two games and is a good bet heading into games against Maccabi and Virtus.

Fenerbahce is [without star guard Wade Baldwin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/wade-baldwin-sidelined-with-hamstring-injury/) through injury and will therefore need another strong contribution from key man [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/), who has averaged 23.0 points during his team’s current three-game winning run. Fenerbahce will look to use its strong offensive rebounding (13.1 offensive boards per game, second in the league) to gain extra possessions, so Bayern will need the likes of [Johannes Voigtmann](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/johannes-voigtmann/007201/) (5.5 rebounds per night) to stay strong in the paint.

On a high after last week’s Greek derby triumph, Olympiacos is gunning for a fourth straight win against an ASVEL team desperate to stop a four-game losing slide. The Reds are unbeaten at home and boast the smoothest collective offense in the competition, averaging a league-high 21.5 assists per game – led by 5.9 per night from [Thomas Walkup](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/thomas-walkup/008855/).
